Sony to make the PSP Go! iPod like
Rumors of the next PSP or PSP2 have been rampant throughout the year. It seems like there just might be some merit to the rumors as a news site reveals some compelling details regarding the next PSP. Also, it seems like Sony may be targeting the iPod by looking at the configuration of the next PSP.
According to 1UP, sources have revealed that Sony will be announcing a new PSP model that will not utilize the UMD. The company has indicated that taking out the UMD playback capability would help reduce piracy previously. I honestly like the UMD format as it holds up to 1.8 GB and can hold more than a traditional cartridge and is physically smaller then a DVD.
Also, contrary to belief of some seriously confused individuals like Aaron Greenberg, the UMD format was never planned as a commercial format like the DVD. It’s a handheld game system format like the Nintendo DS cartridge. I think the confusion might stem from the fact Sony leveraged its studio support to crank out some movies onto the UMD, but clearly the movies are meant for the PSP only.
The new PSP is said to come in two configurations, the 8GB and 16GB models. The configuration is strikingly similar to how Apple has marketed the iPod series. I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Sony marketing the device to contend with the iPod and the DS in one swoop.
According to sources, the launch title of the new PSP will be the long awaited Gran Turismo Mobile. Could Sony’s PSP gem be finally coming this year? Only time will tell but something is definitely brewing with the announcement that Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny and Tekken 6 will be coming out on the PSP.

Pipe dream if they are thinking on taking on the iPod juggernaut.

“I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Sony marketing the device to contend with the iPod and the DS in one swoop.”
The word of the day is “marginalized” because of price in comparison to competitors.
My PSP 2000 works fine and can carry up to 16GB (twice the amount quoted here as possibly coming to PSP Go) for about $50 (memory stick pro duo adapter w/micro sd).
This will be like the same problem I have with my DS lite. I could trade it in at GameStop and get $70 towards a DSi, but why? DSi ware is not that compelling, and neither is the camera functionality.
This will be a very slow burn unless they come up with something very compelling (and differentiating from previous models) for the go.
April 29th, 2009
Exactly the reason why I wont upgrade to the DSi.
April 29th, 2009
damn you Sony… if this is true… I would have to choose between a PSP and a 360… AND I CANT CHOOSE!
I Vant Patapon… NAO!

“I honestly like the UMD format as it holds up to 1.8 GB and can hold more than a traditional cartridge and is physically smaller then a DVD.”
Playing games from memory cards is much better. They are smaller and hold a lot more then a UMD.
I have the touch and very few games are fun to play. The on screen controls take up to much of the screen and if your hands are big they get in the way.

Oh Mike you are fooled if you think Sony came out with the UMD strictly for the PSP. Just look at the history of the company and try telling me that again. Betamax, UMD, Minidisk, Atrac and finally the one that paid it’s way to fame, Bluray! Sony has always been about a format that they wanted to dominate.

and never succeed CAD.
I have a PS3 question. We need a forum.
I lost my Blue tooth headset for my phone. I want to buy a new one but want one that will work on my Phone and PS3.
Does the PS3 support any head set? Or only Sony brand?

-Yeah I feel the exact same way. I already own both and see absolutely no need to upgrade.
April 29th, 2009
Ncaissie, You can use any Blue Tooth headset. That’s one of the best things about the PS3 – multifunctional.
April 29th, 2009
@ncaissie
Any bluetooth will work, just avoid the cheaper models. I had a cheap $25 blue tooth when I first got my PS3, and it worked fine, but needed reinitialization every time every I started the ps3. On top of that, it allowed a lot of background noise.
I replaced it with a motorola H850, which is almost as noise free as the PS3 specific one. It was more expensive, but it is smaller and lighter, with an incredible battery life.
So yeah, any BT will work, but make sure you don’t go too cheap. For the price, if the bulk of the PS3 BT isn’t an issue, it is pretty good.

Betamax is still used to shoot movies/broadcasts to this day CAD.
Minidisk, was cool but yes a flop along with Atrac <—totally agree with ya here and want to add a “WTF, were they thinking”
Bluray is on a whole different level. Bluray is NOT dominated by Sony but by a whole group of companies, its HDDVD that was dominated by a single company. Sony is just the loudmouth of the studio group, sorry i know this is a wiki link but its the fastest and most likely this won’t be skewed information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc_Association <—if you really want an official link here: http://us.blu-raydisc.com/ you have to look i think in the what is blu ray and it will list all the companies….
Also, the times have changed…Sony has/had the support of most of the studio companies for Bluray, whereas VHS had the studio support back then.
On top of that Sony owns a lot of the studios: MGM/Columbia/Tristar, etc…
And as an added note: Its very funny that everyone loves to harp on the whole betamax thing ( hmmm kinda like us PS3 guys and the whole RROD thing….) but you guys seem to forget that it was Sony (along with Phillips) that brought you the CD technology we have today:)

“I honestly like the UMD format as it holds up to 1.8 GB and can hold more than a traditional cartridge and is physically smaller then a DVD.”
Surely the answer for the next one (assuming they really want to stand behind Blu-ray…..which is by no means assurred) is to use mini BD discs?
7.8gb or 15.6gb dual layer ought to be plenty for all sorts of applications whilst keeping the convenient size.
That would allow some cross-usage between stand-alone Blu-ray players & PSPs which could be very useful.
Imagine a line of cheap DL high def movies with all the flannel & nonsense stripped out; only giving you just what you need
(no extras, single language and DTS or DD+ audio @ 1.5Mbps)
at a nice very low price.
The small discs would be nice for storage space reasons.
It might do some until the 2tb flash dive cards come.

OK Boys!! I’ve been looking for this article for a while, well at least I’ve been thinking about looking for it, but I found it today. It’s the story of the development process of the 360 and PS3. It talks about how Sony basically paid the R&D for the technology that is in the 360. It’s based on the Book by David Shippy and Mickie Phipps of IBM titled “The Race for a New Game Machine”.
We always battle about which system is better but lets hear what the Developer of both machines has to say.
“But can Shippy’s insight on both console’s processors finally answer the age-old debate about which console is actually more powerful?
“I’m going to have to answer with an ‘it depends,’” laughs Shippy, after a pause. “Again, they’re completely different models. So in the PS3, you’ve got this Cell chip which has massive parallel processing power, the PowerPC core, multiple SPU cores… it’s got a GPU that is, in the model here, processing more in the Cell chip and less in the GPU. So that’s one processing paradigm — a heterogeneous paradigm.”
“With the Xbox 360, you’ve got more of a traditional multi-core system, and you’ve got three PowerPC cores, each of them having dual threads — so you’ve got six threads running there, at least in the CPU. Six threads in Xbox 360, and eight or nine threads in the PS3 — but then you’ve got to factor in the GPU,” Shippy explains. “The GPU is highly sophisticated in the Xbox 360.”
He concludes: “At the end of the day, when you put them all together, depending on the software, I think they’re pretty equal, even though they’re completely different processing models.”"

Nice find CAD,
Well i guess that leaves that debate at that. BUT, then, we have to ask developers such as Hideo Kojima, why he thinks that MGS4 is not possible on the 360? Also, why is then, that when a multi-platform game is made with the PS3 as the leading platform, BOTH console’s overall graphics go up, but when the 360 is the lead development console, overall graphics go down, with the PS3 suffering?
Im asking to debate, i actually just want to know why that is the case? Probably none of us can answer that….oh well, well just leave it as both consoles are pretty equal? With the PS3 having the slight advantage due to storage?
In all seriousness, it really comes down this:
-The actual Developer’s developing the game skills.
April 29th, 2009
CAD:
“eight or nine threads in the PS3″
Wasn’t the Cell supposed to be 8 but with only 7 actually used & the 8th reserved for the OS?

CAD, and the point is?

UMD will never go away and there’s no PSP 2 and if there’s one trust me it wont be like the iPod the PSP is already better than the iPod.
April 29th, 2009
How is getting rid of UMD going to help reduce piracy?
Correct me if I’m wrong but the ipod/iphone sells their games online via the app store and all these games have been pirated to hell. Heck, there’s even an “official site” where cracked ipod/iphone games are distributed.
If Sony is looking to distribute their games the same way as apple, then expect more piracy!
April 29th, 2009
Barnabe
I wouldn’t expect you to understand.
April 29th, 2009
hammy… I think it has more to do with reducing costs and getting rid of the UMD format which I heard takes a while to load…
there will always be piracy… the DSi had R4 carts before it was even released in the US… you cant stop it… but if you can provide a simple and easy to use interface… with good and cheap games… you can get people to pay you for the products…
thats why they are researching with Patapon 2… which is downloadable only… I just hope I can get some of the crazy weird ass games from the iPhone and DS…
dammit… NEED MOAR MAHNEEEE
April 29th, 2009
CAD your 2nd post was probably the best post you have come up with …. It wasn’t poisoned with sony h8 and actually appeared somewhat neutral. Good post
Your first post however, was utter garbage.

nope spidey… dont give him that… its like this… hitler may have been a vegetarian… he may have been nice to his cousins and cared about the environment… but he is still fucking hitler…
CAD ofcourse is not hitler…. he is Eva Braun…
also… FOR FUCKS SAKE SONY! SECOND ANALOG STICK! I WANT IT! NAO!

@CON
The processor power is only one part of the puzzle. The whole architecture of each machine is different, and how the parts work together is a relevant differentiation.
The 360 has all of its ram (512) in one spot. The GPU and the CPU share bandwidth through the system bus. The PS3 has two ram locations (256×2) to which the GPU and the CPU have dedicated access, respectively. Theoretically, this means the GPU and CPU are unhampered by each others actions, as opposed to the sharing of the system bus in the ps3.
The drawback being that generally speaking, the non graphics related processes are restricted to 256 of ram, minus the portion reserved by the XMB.
The end result is yet to be seen, as neither system seems to have plateaued in its game quality. The PS3 took longer to hit full pace in the console software evolution, but has definitely caught up. The initial steep learning curve for devs is probably to blame.
I don’t think it would be fair to either console to predict which will look AND play the best at end of this generation, but in basic theory, the PS3 has a few advantages.
April 30th, 2009
DWH,
Surely you’re not telling me that UMD costs Sony more than piracy!!
If they go for digital downloads, expect the new PSP to be hacked faster than the old one.
Look at Apple, their new iphone is already hacked and its not even released yet. And if you haven’t seen it already, check out http://appulo.us/appdb/. Its the “official” ipod/iphone cracked app website.
It would be a real shame if that were to happen to the PsP.
What Sony should do is scrap all the other stuff the PsP can do like music, movies and the other crap and make it only for games, cuz thats what I paid for. I can see my photos and other $hit on my iphone. And don’t let the PSP connect to the PC via USB. Games could be downloaded via WiFi or UMD’s can still be used. If the PSP can’t be connected to PC and since fake UMD’s aren’t available, I don’t see how it can be hacked again.

The biggest thing that turned me off my orig psp was the no 2nd analogue stick ……
April 30th, 2009
Here it is I post an article where the developer of both machines basically says that both machines are equeal and that makes me a PS3 hater (which I am). So basically you want me to say the opposite because it seems like all you guy want to do is war about this vs that. It seems that only a few people here have the brains to actually carry on a decent conversation.
April 30th, 2009
So here comes the hate. I’ll just dig deeper into that story and tell you how funny it is that Sony paid the Research and Development (4 Million) for the Power PC technology that makes up the Cell and then Microsoft comes in the back door takes that technology and runs off leaving Sony looking stupid. Then Microsoft had the brains to have seconday Manufacturing that lead to the 360 coming out a year earlier and the Sony people were caught with their pants down and were a whole year late. Now Sony is in 3rd and Microsoft has taken their shine and Sony aided them in doing so. LOL how funny is that. HA HA (This post is intended for the immature only) Spidy and Barnabe you can comment now.

“seconday Manufacturing”
this particular part didn’t seem to work out so well cad.
April 30th, 2009
I dont get it CAD… you make it seem like that matters to gamers… you buy a console then buy the games….
If you are playing games and you care more about the petty bickering of the hardware manufacturers… or choose games according to achievements and trophies…
you are gaming for the wrong reason my man…
First of all.. the 1st position and 3rd position… should not matter to gamers… second of all… writing off old games that have no achievements… is pretty stupid…
Having said that… I would only play Oblivion on the 360… If I am spending 100+ hours on a game… then I deserve some fucking achievements… I want to show off my E-Penis… it is big… just ask Harry’s asshole..
*facepalm* I suddenly feel sick…
April 30th, 2009
Let me keep this very simple for you guys. We all come here saying my system is better then yours. All I’m showing is that the maker of both chips in the 360 and PS3 is saying that both systems are equeal. I’m not talking about achievement or games I’m just showing you guys how stupid we are to be bickering.
April 30th, 2009

you heard of white knight chronicles carl? here… I know you like RPGs…
April 30th, 2009
I heard Famitsu gave White Knight Chronicles a low score a few months back?
April 30th, 2009
yeah they did… but that issue has been resolved already… we already know that… doesnt mean its a bad game…
April 30th, 2009
if it has achievements (coughcough)… I mean trophies, it might be worth at least a rental!
April 30th, 2009
What was the issue?
May 1st, 2009
December.
7,8,7,7 isn’t exactly horrid. It seems most of the problems were with the online mode, while they only mentioned awkward menus with the single player.

Ah CAD ….. Have a look at my post again. I actually supported your post (the one about the article you found). The only issue I had, was with your first post about the UMD.
You got in a huff n puff over nothing. I congratulated you on a good post and you still somehow get that I am calling you a ps3 hater ???
May 1st, 2009
yeah carl it has trophies… also it has free online… not like the PSN stuff… its like you finish the story mode and can play it like an MMO afterwards…
I like it… it will be interesting…
May 1st, 2009
Ok Spidey I understand now. Fine your forgiven.
May 2nd, 2009
Thanks CAD that means a lot
Until we meet again …….
