inFAMOUS is hot and Microsoft to show Wii-like motion controller at E3

inFAMOUS is hot and Microsoft to show Wii-like motion controller at E3It certainty has been an exciting day for video game news today. The new inFAMOUS demo is available for download for those with a promo code. Also, Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer hints at what many are speculating to be the Wii-like motion controller at E3. Things are starting to heat up in the gaming industry.

inFAMOUS left a glowing impression on me from what I have experienced in the past. However, it seems like the game has made massive strides which is evident from the demo made available for PS3 owners with a promo code. The demo shows a very impressive looking vertical slice of Empire City.

Here are some screenshots from the inFAMOUS demo (click for larger view):

Looks like its good to be evil

Comparing the graphics between Grand Theft Auto IV and inFAMOUS, it is clear that Sucker Punch studios has made incredible strides to break the barrier that has plagued massive open world games in the past. Gamers will also be able to literally spend hours just playing the demo as there are so many things to do within this small teaser. This does bode well for the full retail version of the game. Sucker Punch also left a tasty Easter egg within the demo hinting at a next gen Sly Cooper 4 game. Nice.

ballmerIn other news, Steve Ballmer, top boss man and CEO of Microsoft, dropped a huge hint as to a surprise that will be announced for the Xbox 360 at E3. According to Dallas News, Ballmer dropped a line during his speech in Dallas where he stated, “Pay attention to the stuff we’re announcing in the next month on Xbox.”

This is quite a surprise because Ballmer rarely talk about the Xbox unless it has something to do with how well Halo 3 sold. I have to agree with Dallas News and with just about every news outlet that this announcement is most likely in reference to the new Xbox 360 Wii-like motion controller.

There are several versions of the rumor with the most popular being that the motion controller is actually a motion sensing video camera, similar to the PS3 EyeToy. Everything the company has done as of late indicates a strong shift towards the casual market. Will this new motion sensing technology change the destiny of the Xbox 360? It looks like we will just have to wait till E3 to see what all the hoopla is about.

  3. kevo:

    is sony gettin a wiimote?

  4. SW:

Judging by that picture I can see many jerk-off games in the 360′s future…

Needs to get me one of those.

“Sony asked “key third-party publishers” to implement last minute functionality of the motion-sensing device into their soon-to-be released games and ensure compatibility with select future games.

Motion-sensing game controller would allow PlayStation 3 to offer experience similar to Nintendo Wii. However, the price of the PS3 – $399 – is too high for casual gamers, therefore the release of the unit at E3 may not be the first priority for Sony.”

    Waggle your wand, Son(y).

  6. Royzy:

Screw Sly Cooper 4, I want The Wang Way, Whoa Man and Harold & Ranjith.

  7. SW:

    ‘Waggle your wand, Son(y).’

As long as I can pretend that i’m jerking off 2 purple helmet yogurt slingers then I’m onboard no matter the console!

  8. Spideydog:

SW you strangely resembled Harry with that quote my friend ….. lol

  9. CON:

I can see a new arcade version coming out with the different controller and a lower price than the wii. Will be interesting to see how 360 will advertise to both gamer markets although at the minute the ads are pretty casual anyway

  10. CON:

If the 360 decides to go down this road it will basically be the wii2. It already was twice the graphics and memory and not too mention cheap production costs.

Although as a hardcore gamer I’m not sure I like what I’m seeing. If they start to forget about the gamers who made the 360 what it is and start cutting back on hardcore games I would be inclined take another look at the ps3rd

  11. harry sachz:

That reminded me of that SNL skit where Alec Baldwin looked to be beating off with a Wii controller.

  12. CarlB:

If Microsoft does bring out a motion sensing controller (can it really do any worse than sixaxis?) it will probably be designed for and/or be included with the Arcade, as it would appeal most to the demographic (simplicity, price, etc.).

  13. CAD:

Personally I don’t believe that just because Microsoft is going after the casual market means the Hardcore titles are going away. I play both Hardcore and casual games. You gotta remember that the 360 is the only one with parental control. You can set your ratings for each profile and set passwords. With that in place you can have something for everyone along side the Movies and the streaming capabilities. Besides does it seem as though no Hardcore games are not coming out. There is quite a few on the way and basically Microsoft just wants to be the one in your living room to control all your entertainment needs and having a console for everyone which I believe it’s doing already minus Motion Control. But really I want it just so we can get some shotters with this Motion Control. I think it will be great for that.

  14. CAD:

As for infamous it looks good so I got this video off You tube since Blorge brought this up before about Prototype and Infamous check it out. Personally I think Prototype will be better bang for your buck if I had to choose.

  15. kevo:

haha Harry that was a funny skit to me anyways lol

  16. Mike Ferro:

    @CAD,

Actually to correct you the Wii and PS3 also have parental control. The PS3 in addition also has advanced blu-ray parental control not only for the movie but also the profile 2.0 Social Web Features.

I highly doubt Microsoft will shift completely towards the casual market but I believe the company’s main focus will shift. I suspect this is a n executive level decision made by Ballmer based on the cost per profit ratio (scalable) casual games can provide.

I suspect Sony wants to go the exact same route but can’t due to the high price point entry of the PS3 currently. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if they do end up going this route once the PS3 hit the $200 price range in a couple years or so.

As far as inFAMOUS and Prototype its foolish to compare them as I have clearly stated that they play completely different.

    inFAMOUS – 3rd person cover shooter/RPG
    Prototype – hack n’ slash/beat em up

Its like comparing Gears of War to Dynasty Warriors.

I recomend PS3 owners play both inFAMOUS and Prototype.
360 owners definitely try out Prototype.

  17. CON:

But if ps3 have to wait a couple of years until it hits the $200 mark it will be too late, what price will the 360 arcade model be then?

I just hope both consoles don’t start copying the wii completly for the next gen of consoles. I heard apple might be entering the ring. I can only imagine they will have something for the elite.

  18. Happyhockum:

    There’s room for both.
Plenty of room, in fact – particularly if, by advancing into the casual market, it boosts sales significantly and by doing so extends the life of the console.

I don’t see why anyone (who isn’t some sort of conceited self-labelled ‘serious’ game snob parked well and truly up their own outlet) would not welcome this.

It’s ludicrous to pretend that simply by moving to broaden their appeal & venture into this more ‘casual’ area that the less casual games will stop coming to Xbox.

  19. CarlB:

“I suspect Sony wants to go the exact same route but can’t due to the high price point entry of the PS3 currently.”

I would have to agree that it wouldn’t be the “exact” same route in that they have a lower user base and higher price limiting it, but as far as focusing on a casual market they have already attempted to focus on casual with Home, many (if not most) PSN games, and soon Free Realms.

That an IPhone 3g 16gb costs more than a PS3 and still has as much success as it does with casual games has attracted Sony’s attention as much as it has the other companies. 99 cents to $15 seems to be the spectrum of casual prices, and Sony will continue to focus on casual just as much as Microsoft, if not more so.

If space invaders extreme, castle crashers, and geometry wars is a sign of what casual can bring to the market then I am all for it sharing home console space with triple A big budget titles and other high quality games.

Gardening Mama is the shit…. whops I mean “is shit”

  21. CarlB:

You have some eclectic taste to try out Gardening Mama Barnabe.

  22. Arvis:

“It’s ludicrous to pretend that simply by moving to broaden their appeal & venture into this more ‘casual’ area that the less casual games will stop coming to Xbox.”

Right, because the Wii gets hardcore games monthly… :|

  23. Barnabe Jones:

Day one purchase! Ha, no not really. That was a dig at the whole “casual” thing.

  24. CarlB:

Bah. “Casual” is just another label for pick up and play games, which is what the industry was born from. Complex “hardcore” games have had their fair share of stinkers in the past, and the common denominator is the best from each category get the most sales (total money made) overall, with rare exceptions (thanks nintendo). 360 already has a ton of “casual” community games, but hardly anybody buys them. The ones that get the real attention are the arcade titles on both PSN and XBLA.
