Why the PS3 slim is more than likely

May 15, 2009

Why the PS3 slim is more than likely Rumors around the new PS3 slim model have been rampant around the Web. When photos of the PS3 slim surfaced, many predicted that the PS3 slim will be revealed at E3. However, the launch of another iteration of the PS3 is really not all that surprising.

Recently, photos from a Chinese Levelup Web site were found by Next Gamer. The photos are no longer available on the Levelup site but the pictures are available everywhere else. The pictures show a slim PS3 with a matte finish instead of the glossy finish. Rumors of a slim PS3 have been circulating around the Web since late last year. It seemed like one of those rumors that would die down like the Xbox 360 Blu-ray support.

However, the rumor has been picking up steam every month, with all signs pointing towards E3. It really isn’t all that surprising for Sony to release a new iteration of the PS3 two years after launch. The PS2 went through more incarnations than I can count (not all physical). It really is part of the manufacturing process to refine and streamline the components so that the device is not only built more efficiently but at a dramatic cost savings.

If you notice in the picture, one of the biggest changes to the alleged PS3 slim besides the reduced thickness is the matte finish. This is actually very similar to how the PS2 and the Xbox 360 is coated. A big complaint from the adolescent crowd has been how easy it is to get your finger prints on the glossy PS3 finish.

Other criticism that the PS3 received is around how intimidating it looks. Gamers have indicated that the Xbox 360 looks more approachable in terms of being able to pick up the system and not caring about throwing it around. Although, I do not recommend gamers to throw around their Xbox 360, as it is a piece of consumer electronics after all. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for more news as E3 is right around the corner.

  1. Bourne:

It looks like one of those cheap chinese rip-offs, you know the ones i mean, they copy the iphone identically and change the slightest detail to make it legal. Besides the fact that it doesn’t use the official PS3 logo and font.

  2. lock_down:

I think that PS3 is real, or at least an early prototype…I don’t think anyone would go to those lengths to create a rip off…if it was a rip off it would be called the SORNY or SONNY or something.

  3. Addam:

“Gamers have indicated that the Xbox 360 looks more approachable in terms of being able to pick up the system and not caring about throwing it around.”

That seems like a particularly stupid thing for anyone to say. Surely the price might have an impact on that as well as the size and weight? I’d be much more inclined to throw an iPod shuffle around than my 40″ HDTV… I don’t consider my TV to be intimidating or less approachable though!

  4. Shoo:

Firstly, the photos look very grainy like someone used the Photoshop noise filter. Also, do you really think Sony would use the word ‘PS3′ instead of ‘Playstation’ on the box and the unit? Not really proper branding

And I don’t think Sony would move to a Matte black finish as it looks cheap and crappy.

Still, thats only my opinion. :)

  5. Happyhockum:

    More stupid shapes.
    Great.

Thanks for making these things difficult to stack on the rack guys.

    Matt black?
    Horrible.
    Cheap and nasty.

By all means produce different colours/finshes if you like but piano black is easily the classiest finish (and surely – along with perhaps a silver option – THE colour for a/v kit)?

Lastly……damn but the PS3 (in either guise) is one mighty ugly piece of kit.

  6. CAD:

Gamers have indicated that the Xbox 360 looks more approachable in terms of being able to pick up the system and not caring about throwing it around.

Mike that is the stupidest thing you have ever said. Are you out of your fucking mind. Stop reaching dude. Who in their right mind approches a game system with thoughts of throwing it around. Learn to stay on topic and stop inciting Bullshit.

  7. CAD:

Happy your right that is ugly. Their better off keeping the design they have now. It looks like a flying saucer with an alien named KAZZ flying it.

  8. lock_down:

You don’t need to throw the 360 around for it break so…no, no, that’s all been cleared up now, hasn’t it?

I’ve gotta ask, but do you wear shades and a hat like that in real life CAD?

  9. Barnabe Jones:

Not quite as sexy looking as the original PS3, but I’d do it…. I mean buy one.

  10. Barnabe Jones:

“Matt black? Horrible. Cheap and nasty.”

… Um the 360 is matte white. I think it looks cheap, plus the metal housing gets to be about 100 degrees. You can literally fry an egg atop of that thing. At least the PS3 is sleek, sexy, piano black. It looks classy. Plus you know it won’t over heat, RROD, E74, and scratch you games on you.

  11. ncaissie:

    That is ugly.
I would not buy that thing. Anyone that is intimidated by a ps3 is retarded. Also if you don’t like fingerprints on you PS3 then don’t put them their stupid! I have three little kids and my wife runs a daycare and I never have problems with fingerprints on my PS3. If you can’t control your kids you shouldn’t have them.

Why would anyone want to throw a consol? That is a dumb statement. Also the current PS3 looks WAY better then the 360.

  12. CAD:

Barnabe I would agree with my first box because that shit was boiling but my second boxes now keep a good tempature. By the way a couple of my buddies including myself bought new 360′s and I just wanted to share how to identify a Jasper 360. Basically when your looking into the cut out on the Box so you could see when the manufacturing date is, you have to tear away at the left side of the hole so see in a bit further. You have to look for the voltage # Jaspers are 12.1 and Falons are 14.6 I think. But it’s 14.something for sure. when you take it out the box you will see 12v-14.1…. something along those lines. you will not be able to see the whole thing from the tear but it should be enough to identify those last #’s. Hope this helps for those who might want to know.

  13. CAD:

    Lock_down

Not really. I never wear a hat because I was scared of a receeding hair line since High School days and I only wear shades when I’m driving and that to is also a rear. The sun really has to be bright for me to put on shades.

  14. Happyhockum:

    14.2 on mine CAD.

You can also be certain if you have a 150w power brick, the others need more juice and can’t work with it (although IIRC the lower power users can work with a higher wattage brick….there’s been some alterations to the connector to make sure you can’t go wrong anyways).

    Barnabe
you’re living in the very distant past.
The Falcon and Jasper run very cool, there’s very little heat to feel on the sides even when it’s been on for ages and the air blown out the back is always very cool.

…..and btw, just to be clear, yes I agree white is also a dumb colour.
Yes I’d prefer my Elite in piano black and yes although it’s better I also think the Xbox 360 shape is a bit of a silly shape too.

Surely someone can style a black box better?

What’s this I’ve been hearing about 60gb PS3s and the yellow light of death?

  15. SW:

I know its tempting fire all yer guns on Sony if at every turn, but the 360 gentlemen in here may as least want to acknowledge that these are probably fakes before going on a ‘OMGZ ITS TEH SONY SHAPEZ OF DOOOOMMMMMMzzzz!!!!!111′…

Make you look a little less xbot’ish.

“What’s this I’ve been hearing about 60gb PS3s and the yellow light of death?”

Best I can do with that is a google search which returns either a temporary overheating situation or a HDD failure.

  16. Arvis:

    Happy,

Serious question: you said that piano black is the “classiest finish” for a console, but then went on to say that the PS3 is “one ugly piece of kit.” But, isn’t the PS3 a piano black console? What am I missing here?

    -Arvis

  17. lock_down:

    Bias? :P

  18. ncaissie:

    Stupidity? :)

  19. CAD:

OK Maybe it’s 14.2 but for sure you’ve got a Jasper. I have a falcon. I looked at it last night after I realized how to identify it.

  20. CAD:

Oh shit I goofed. OK we both have falcons.

  21. Barnabe Jones:

Wait.. is it the Falcon or Jasper ship? Which is the preferred version?

  22. CAD:

    The Jasper.

  23. Happyhockum:

That the finish alone does not determine everything about the aesthetic?

    D’uh.

  24. Happyhockum:

Jasper is the one to go for for now, come the end of this year (or early next) it’ll be Valhalla (the 45nm SoC unit).

  25. CarlB:

A slimmer version of the PS3 is only a matter of time. This is why people were speculating about it and pictures were spreading early last year as well. Here is a larger pic of the box and some more background:

“All that said, at the end of the day, the most important thing Sony can do now is sell the PS3 for $299″

  26. Spideydog:

“What’s this I’ve been hearing about 60gb PS3s and the yellow light of death?”

Clutching at straws m8. Do you really want to enter into a RROD debate AGAIN ??

  27. darkwhitehair:

    YES! I… GOT… FIOS!

the guy who came to install it looks like Jeff Gertsmann… only with a Noo York accent…

also… the TV is black… the set top box works… shows the channel number in the little display… but no picture… WTF!

also guys… I read Sony is losing around $40 per console they sell… so dont expect a price drop…

YES! FIOS! also… kinda ironic… they gave me a wireless router… but since the router is right next to the PS3… I use the ethernet cable… which means… NO MOAR leeching… :( and… um… I am not using the WiFi on the PS3… :(

  28. Happyhockum:

    What “debate” Spideydog?

    There is no debate.

Just a bunch of PS3 fanboys who either cannot accept or who want to pretend that the Xbox RROD problem has been dealt with
(as they whinge and moan that their beloved console still – for reasons that seem to completely baffle them – remains firmly welded in 3rd and last place in the sales rankings).

Love the way the minds instantly close to any idea that PS3 may have problems.
    Very even-handed of you.
    Not.

Perhaps you weren’t aware that the early Blue lasers – as fitted to PS3 – have very finite lives.
It may well be that the a lot of pweople are soon to find out that their combo game and movie player will turn out not to have been such a fantastic idea after all?

  29. Happyhockum:

    Oooops

    Obviously

“who want to pretend that the Xbox RROD problem has been dealt with”

    should have read

“who want to pretend that the Xbox RROD problem has *not* been dealt with”

  30. Happyhockum:

Oh, and I guess we can also add that

    “a bunch of PS3 fanboys”

    should be

    “a bunch of *self-confessed* PS3 fanboys”

    right jojo29?

    LOL

  31. CAD:

“who want to pretend that the Xbox RROD problem has *not* been dealt with”

    Amen to that!!!!!

  32. Spideydog:

HH you need to have another lie down m8….. getting hot under the collar again (triple post) over nothing. I was actually trying to deflect another pointless argument over the now redundant RROD issue and you have gone off on yet another tangent accusing everyone of being fanboys.

Settle champ, your beloved 360 is doing fine.

  33. Happyhockum:

    Spideydog

You need to stop acting like 2d text on a screen tells you everything about someone’s mood.

I’ve been in a great mood all day (particularly after about 2.30pm) and I’m top of the f*cking world tonight after Man Utd won their 18th league title.

  34. darkwhitehair:

wow… you guys are assholes… I announce my super awesome news… and you still fight over old issues…

  35. SW:

You both just need some angry make up sex.

    Ill throw in the KY.

  36. WildStrike:

Happy, why do you have such a despise for the playstation 3? Not once have I ever seen you post a positive comment about sony and their system. Your comments I’ve seen so far are all but regards towards microsoft and their system and strong dislike towards sony and their system. A bit of an imbalance, in my opinion.

    Just asking.

  37. WildStrike:

I also forgot to mention that picture is fake. So don’t worry if you thought they were authentic.

  38. harry sachz:

    WildStrike,

Erm, I don’t believe singling Happy out makes sense. Not sure if you’ve been paying attention, but there are people on the PS3 side of the fence who do nothing but have disdain about the 360, e.g Barnabe, Ivan, lock_down etc.

dwh, what’s FIOS? Is that some sort of fibre optic internet connection?

  39. Happyhockum:

    WildStrike

If you’d really been looking you’d see that I have said things like ‘if you’re into your PS3 then great, enjoy’.
I have several friends and family with one.
    They’re ok.
Personally I rate the Xbox as better but it takes all sorts, eh?

Where I have a problem with it is when people start claiming it to be incredibly advanced (it isn’t, it’s just got a different CPU).

I see it as over-priced too, primarily because of the Blu-ray drive which was all about advancing their new video format and nothing to do with gaming.
Using your prospective customers like that is IMO underhand.

Blu-ray itself is stuffed full of new DRM measures not found on any other video format.
Given their previous root kit BS (which did have ‘phone home’ abilities) I wouldn’t trust BD+ for a minute.

I’m not thrilled by Sony generally either.
If anyone else (as an individual) had pulled that root kit stunt they’d have been jailed for a long period on criminal charges.

Sony always try to pretend that they are selling a ‘premium product’ which invariably turns out to be no more ‘premium’ than anyone elses’s – but always at a higher price.

Then there’s their other trick, always trying to convert everyone to their proprietary products & systems.
Sometimes, on PC applications, without even asking.

I’m happy to give Microsoft a fair crack of the whip (largely because when they do try and skew things towards themselves it’s very easy to choose someone else’s products instead) but Sony IMO proved themselves long ago to be anti-consumer and well worth avoiding.

  40. darkwhitehair:

YEAH! Its fibre optic cable connection… tv phone and internet for around $100… and guess what the speed is… UP TO 20 MBPS BITCH!
    WOOOOT!

Ive come a looong way from 4kbps… gosh.. that was less than a year ago…

  41. Happyhockum:

    dwh

20meg on fibre, is that for real!?

    That’s incredibly pi$$-poor.

I’m getting 18meg on standard copper for £12 ($18 US/$24 AUS) per month (with no caps or throttling).

With fibre in Europe we’re usually talking over 50meg (and 100 down & 10 up seems the common speeds reported).

‘whoot’ nothing my friend, you’re getting Royally hosed.

  42. Happyhockum:

Sorry to pi$$ on your chips, just thought you should know.

  43. darkwhitehair:

dude… 20 meg is the entry level… it goes up to MUCH more higher than that… Im satisfied with 20… hell Id be satisfied with 1 meg after what I had to endure a year ago…

so stop raining on my fucking parade….

  44. Happyhockum:

    darkwhitehair:
“20 meg is the entry level”

Ah, I get you. Cheap a$$.

    Welcome to the 20th century!

  45. Happyhockum:

    I jest I jest. :)

  46. harry sachz:

I’d do all sorts of dirty things for a 20mb line. I have ADSL2 which I was told that goes as fast as 20mb, however I can’t get it to go any faster than 11.5, and I live literally about 1km from the exchange.

  47. darkwhitehair:

All you crazy kids with you crazy innernet speed… a year ago all I had was 24 kbps… and I was happy with it…

but thats not the point here… the point is… my net connection is better than Harry’s… YEAH! YEAH HARRY! What up? You fucking soggy saos TIM TAM! YEAH! Who’s the best country in the WORLD NOW? EH?!

    YEAH! WHAT UP?

  48. harry sachz:

hahaha fuck you and your streaming HD porn. Are you capped, or is it ‘all you can eat’?

  49. darkwhitehair:

    ALL YOU CAN EAT BITCHES!

but the net provider comcast is capped… which is weird since they advertise themselves as “for teh gamerZ”… and they block torrentz… its a big conspiracy… only in USA…

YEAH HARRY! Keep paying $100 shitbucks for your games… YEAH! I PAY 60… YEAH! WHAT? WHAT?

  50. Spideydog:

“I’d do all sorts of dirty things for a 20mb line. I have ADSL2 which I was told that goes as fast as 20mb, however I can’t get it to go any faster than 11.5, and I live literally about 1km from the exchange.”

Same Harry. Hopefully “RuddNet” will get things better ????

  51. harry sachz:

Spidey, when is Kevin 07′s NBN meant to be rolled out anyway?

@ dwh, blocking torrents? No thanks, i’d rather have my middle of the range connection over a fast one that blocks torrents. I wouldn’t be able to get my episodes of Heroes and Lost otherwise.

  52. Ivan_PSP:

FAKE. And that has got to be worst PLAYSTATION 3 picture i have ever seen. I hope is fake. Sony is known for making nice stylish looking hardware this is nothing like Sony.

  53. darkwhitehair:

yeah… comcast is fucking evil… but… Fios has the best speed… poor bastards who have comcast…

  54. Spideydog:

Dunno Harry. I did hear they are starting rolling it out in Tassie first ????

  55. harry sachz:

Tassie? They have electricity down there? Last I heard, they’ve still got the Cobb & Co horse coaches.

  56. WildStrike:

Happy, I’m just going to tackle a few points you made about the playstation 3.

The playstation 3 is in fact the most advanced gaming console of this generation. Because it has the powerful cell processor (self explanatory).

It’s very expensive, yes. But the xbox 360 is even more expensive if you’re counting extras (play and charge kit, xbox live, wifi adaptor, etc). Even at launch, it’s even more expensive for what it offered costing around $400 (correct me if I got the price wrong). That time it’s basically a video game console with no built in wifi, no hdd, no charge kit, no free online.

Bluray has a significance in the video game industry. It’s not just there for high definition movies. It’s their to eliminate disk space limitation. Meaning no more disk swapping and more content (and higher definition pictures). So far, games have already taking up the extra disk space in bluray. Even square enix admitted how much bluray has benefitted them for final fantasy XIII.

    Both consoles are still good.

  57. lock_down:

FF XIII was always going to go multi-plat when you listen to the devs talk about the investment and success it needs, though even so, you do get the impression that Square hadn’t really thought the FFXIII multi-platform strategy through when they shook hands with Microsoft.

I’d be surprised if FFXIII isn’t on at least four discs, and not that that matters to 360 owners (they don’t care about disc swapping WildStrike), but what is important is that Microsoft refuse to pick up the tab for pressing, packaging and shipping multiple discs, even though it’s their console that is to blame.

    Gotta love the hypocrisy…

  58. Happyhockum:

    WildStrike
WEe”l have to agree to disagree.
I see Cell as nothing special, it’s just differtent.
It could have been had it been adopted and developed wholesale but it hasn’t been and it wasn’t.

The usual jibes about Xbox peripherals relies on everyone needing or wanting Microsoft official accessories.
    They don’t.
    It’s a nonsense.

    Blu-ray?
Show me the game that really needs it – I mean ‘need’…..and no, I’m not talking about a load if tedious FMV that gets boring very quickly and you want to skip by the 2nd showing (if they’ll let you).

    lock_down:
“what is important is that Microsoft refuse to pick up the tab for pressing, packaging and shipping multiple discs, even though it’s their console that is to blame”.

    ….and you can prove that 2, 3 or 4 DVD9s cost more than a BD50 or BD25 can you?

    Be serious
(and yes, you’re right, with loading games to the HDD now in place the numbers of DVDs means absolutely nothing to me).

Why should Microsoft invest in what is clearly a short-term transitory video system wholly designed to primarily benefit Sony?

  59. Happyhockum:

    lock_down

    What hypocrisy?

(or is it just back to the laughable game of throwing back what I said a day or two back?)

  60. lock_down:

I don’t know what you said a day or two ago…

But anyway, I’ve been through this with CAD…it’s not just a disc in isolation though is it; you have to pay for the procurement of those extra discs; you have to pay for the pressing of those extra discs; you have to pay for the extra packaging of the discs; you have to pay for the extra weight when shipping.

Now this is presumptuous and my opinion, but I believe that FFXIII will be on four or more discs, and as such here is currently no DVD casing that supports holding 4 or more DVD’s (I believe so, though happy to be corrected), so they will have to start manufacturing special cases to hold four or more discs.

In isolation one Blu-Ray disc may be expensive; but it’s not the bigger picture, and everything adds up when you’re manufacturing and shipping 5-6 million copies, which I think is a realistic projection of the sales FFXIII will get on the 360….and all of which MS refuses to pay for.

As it happens I agree with you, I think PS3 owners will be very annoyed to find that they have lengthy installs to the HDD while 360 users will be able to slide discs in at will….although it’s all speculation as no-one knows how the final products are going to transpire.

Anyway, congratulations on winning on the League.

  61. Happyhockum:

    lock_down

You’re trying to make a mountain over 3 or at most 4 DVD discs which to the trade are probably mere pennies.

    BD discs are not.

DVD pressings are also cheap, the lines to produce them on are cheap.

Again these things for BD are not.

    Extra packaging?
The standard box mould is altered very slightly on a standard preset.
    Big deal.

Shipping weights for having an additional 2 or 3 discs in the package?!
    You’re kidding, right?

You’re mistaken about boxes and discs btw.
I have a 6 disc box set for the super duper version of Bladerunner.

Ta for saturday, all eyes on Rome now to cap a top season (they only – just – missed out on the FA Cup and the Super Cup = Champions League v UEFA Cup winners).

  62. Happyhockum:

Here’s a fantastic example of why Sony have losy their way, are failing and losing a stack of money –

“Sony Pictures CEO: Nothing Good Has Come From The Internet

    (from the and-that-is-why-you-fail dept)

We were just talking about how Sony CEO Howard Stringer was lamenting the fact that Sony didn’t embrace openness and new technologies like the internet earlier. Perhaps part of the problem is the execs who work under him.
Mathew Ingram points out that at a recent panel discussion the CEO of Sony Pictures, Michael Lynton, said: “I’m a guy who doesn’t see anything good having come from the internet. Period.”

    http://techdirt.com/article.php?sid=20090515/1301064900&threaded=true

  63. Happyhockum:

    Btw lock_down

I think it’s been open to question whether Xbox uses compression like a PC with games.

    It does.

Resident Evil 5 on 360 is 6GB thanks to data compresion but on PS3 it’s 13GB.

All bets about 4 or more discs are now off.

  64. lock_down:

    I can’t believe what you’ve just made me do….but 4 DVD’s weigh 62 grams; one Blu-Ray disc weighs 14 grams.

I’m no expert in shipping and handling, but I’m pretty sure that there’s a big difference in cost between a 5:1 ratio over 5-6 million units in weight…not to mention the heavier packaging that will come with holding 4 discs.

But I digress..I’m not gonna get into an argument here…the fact is it all adds up.

So annoyed that Barca scored last minute against Chelsea :| …Fergie against Hiddink would have been good…would have liked to have seen that.

  65. lock_down:

Well the 4 disc theory is just my opinion as I said, I’m going by the FFXIII demo which was 5gb.

It’s going to be at least three discs though; Star Ocean: TLH was three discs, and I would imagine that FFXIII is the same length if not longer.

  66. WildStrike:

“I see Cell as nothing special, it’s just differtent”

Nothing special? If it’s nothing special and that it’s just a different processor and nothing else, why are developers complimenting it? Why is it that we hear a lot about the processor in interviews than we do with the xbox 360′s processor? It’s nonsense.

You really need to watch some demos showing off the cell processor’s capabilities as well as reading quotes from game developers.

I recommend you to watch the alfred molina, heavy rain, final fantasy VII, edge demos.

“Show me the game that really needs it – I mean “need”

In terms of the amount of data,

    Metal gear solid 4
    Killzone 2
    Final fantasy XIII
    Little big planet
    Uncharted (and uncharted 2)
    Ratchet and clank
…..actually, games that intend to utilize the playstation 3′s hardware and/or have more content will need bluray.

“and no, I’m not talking about a load if tedious FMV that gets boring very quickly and you want to skip by the 2nd showing (if they’ll let you)”

If you’re talking about metal gear solid 4, then no. The metal gear solid series focuses more on the story than the gameplay and always has. That’s why you get long cutscenes (in metal gear solid 4). You need disk space to store those cutscenes. So that justifies the game’s full use on bluray (50gb).

  67. Happyhockum:

    lock_down
If you can compress on a ratio of 5:13 then even a BD50 (still a pretty rare thing in gaming) then 3 x 8.5gb DVD9s will cover everything nicely.

    Another Chelsea v Man Utd?
Would have been nice from the Brit-centric POV but a hell of a lot of people are salivating at what may well prove to be the better ‘pure football’ game with Barca & Man Utd.

    WildStrike

It’s just the usual Sony stunt, a (now failed) attempt to move the CPU over to their pown proprietary design.

No-one’s biting – except ironically Toshiba for their HD TVs and notepads and IBM for some of their larger designs.

Game devs are hardly the best judge when it comes to a fundamental shift in hardware.
Some of them are getting used to working with it, that’s all.

It isn’t anything special and has limitations all of it’s own (the relationship between cells/cores and RAM being an obvious one).

Meanwhile PCs carry on with their own (far more successful) multi-core designs.

You think lots of games full of FMV ‘need’ BD50s, great.
    Plenty would not.

  68. Happyhockum:

Ooops my editing is getting bad.

“If you can compress on a ratio of 5:13 then even a BD50 (still a pretty rare thing in gaming) then 3 x 8.5gb DVD9s will cover everything nicely”.

    should read

If you can compress on a ratio of 5:13 then even for a full BD50 (still a pretty rare thing in gaming) 3 x 8.5gb DVD9s will cover everything nicely.

  69. darkwhitehair:

hey… hello guys? guys over here… including you Mike…

guess what guys… you know what that picture is? its a picture of Polystation 3… a cheap knock-off of Playstation 3… the same guys who made Polystation 1 and 2… it has wired controllers… and a cartridge with 1000 games…. most of which are pallet swap clones of old NES games…

how bout this guys…. next time you want to mouth off about something… do the fucking research… its really pathetic…

    so STFUAJPG!

  70. Spideydog:

HH, are you that much of a “Sony Hater” that you honestly believe that sony was trying to “take over the world” with it’s processor design.

You need to get back on your anti-psychotics, you paranoia is getting out of hand…… lol

  71. Happyhockum:

    Spideydog

Far from your (sadly typical) laughable characterisations the fact of the matter is that on numerous occasions Sony has attempted to push their own proprietary kit on the rest of the market.
    Amusingly they often fail, badly.

Clearly you prefer to deny this and attempt to ridicule anyone pointing out this fact.

    lol indeed.

  72. harry sachz:

haha Polystation. On a related note I finally got around to downloading a Genesis/Megadrive emulator. What’s even cooler is that I connected my 360 controller to my computer via the Plug and Charge kit and it works with the emulator.

  73. Spideydog:

If this is indeed a “Fact” as you point out, then it would be well documented somewhere to make it fact, not just another HH paranoid delusion ??!!

Sorry for being “sadly typical” for pointing out your “sadly typical” paranoid anti-sony diatribe nonsense.

HELP, HELP – Sony is trying take over the WORLD ……..

  74. Spideydog:

Hey Harry, what driver are you using to get your 360 controller to work ??? Mine will say it’s connected but won’t work in game !!

  75. CarlB:

“Sony is trying take over the WORLD”
No, they just don’t like the internet because you can get so many things on it (like PSP games and DRM free 1080p downloads, which kind of puts a sock in locked down blu-ray discs).

    Lockdown,

you’re shipping theory is actually pretty weak, but let’s just say the cost is about as significant as the cost of say, the millions of downloads for the demos or other content (even trailers) SquareEnix would have to pay Sony 16 cents each for, and or the extra cost of blu-ray over 4 dvd’s.

  76. Spideydog:

Oh cmon Carl. That was piss weak m8. What do you think psn is. They sell a crap load of content on there. But your right, they don’t like internet.

Besides, so what if they are supporting their product/format. All companies do. Microsoft stands by it’s Windows software and wants it to continue dominating the OS arena. Why don’t you crucify them for that ??

  77. Happyhockum:

Pathetic Spideydog (and yes, sadly typical).

Obviously in your ‘balanced’ POV you missed the umteen attempts by Sony to force their own new proprietary ‘standards’ on the rest of the industry.

Usually they have been a dismal failure (so you get to pretend that was not what it was about) but from DAT to UMD to memory stick to Blu-ray there is quite an extensive list.

“Besides, so what if they are supporting their product/format.”

    LMAO
    A gem no less.
    Maybe the ‘paranopia’ is catching?

  78. Spideydog:

You just can’t let it go can you …….

You still haven’t proven where any of these formats that sony uses were designed to “take over the world”. They’re fact remember, in your own words.

Time for another lay down HH, your tantrums don’t change peoples views here ;-)

Anyways, I will let you have the last say, because you obviously so desperately need it …. lol I will no longer feed your paranoia.

  79. WildStrike:

“It’s just the usual Sony stunt, a (now failed) attempt to move the CPU over to their pown proprietary design”

No Happy, it just shows how awesome the cell processor really is. A fact that you’re willingly ignorant of. But hey, this shouldn’t be a suprise because I’m talking to an xbox 360 only owner.

Watch those demos closely and ask whether they’re possible on the xbox 360.

“Game devs are hardly the best judge when it comes to a fundamental shift in hardware.
Some of them are getting used to working with it, that’s all”

Happy, being ignorant of the fact that game developers admitting the console’s capabilities over the xbox 360′s is not form of proof. Game developers should be the ones who know the potential of both consoles, and if they say that the playstation 3 is superior then it is superior.

I don’t think you’re aware that certain games are only possible on the playstation 3.

    Killzone 2
    metal gear solid 4
    god of war III
    Gran turismo 5
    Final fantasy XIII
    Final fantasy versus XIII
    Uncharted 2
    Tekken 6
    Heavy rain, etc

Not saying the xbox 360 is bad because it lacks technology. Just saying the playstation 3′s technology is better. It’s the same for every generation.

“It isn’t anything special and has limitations all of it’s own (the relationship between cells/cores and RAM being an obvious one)”

Happy, go and compare the specs.

“You think lots of games full of FMV ‘need’ BD50s”

No. But when it comes to metal gear solid, yes.

  80. Happyhockum:

    Spideydog

You’re the one refusing to admit the obvious.

You can’t cast up Microsoft on this either, there’s a world of difference between already being the de facto standard and repeatedly trying to muscle in as one.

Amuse yourself with your dumb games if you must.
It’s 2d text on a screen to me, it takes seconds to type and you do make me laugh.

    Just like ‘WildStrike’.

Yeah WildStrike, whatever you say son.
You make (like all you blinkered fanboys) such laughable assumptions.

Meanwhile the rest of the world moves on, Cell is such an awesomely powerful thing it remains (and will continue to remain) being unused in almost everything
(excepting, as I said, PS3, Toshiba HD TVs and some non-CE IBM stuff).

    BTW
You maybe missed this but unlike PS3, Xbox does use compression (like a PC) to install to HDD.
    5gb on Xbox = 13gb on PS3….and they use 8.5gb DL DVDs.
    8.5gb at the same ratio comes to 22.1gb (almost a BD25 in other words) 3 x 8.5gbs = 66.3gb, a big step up from a BD50.

There you go, proof that there is no genuine need for Blu-rays.
The space limitation myth is pure BS.
    Read it and weep fanboys.

  81. Happyhockum:

    Spideydog
““take over the world”. They’re fact remember, in your own words.”

From where, let’s see some context if I did say that.

  82. WildStrike:

Happy, it would be nice if you could provide us some source of evidence to your arguments rather than throwing empty claims at us.

And stop ignoring my comments. No excuse.

  83. Arvis:

    WildStrike,

Yeah, that would be nice, wouldn’t it? Alas, I’ve never actually seen it happen.

    -Arvis

  84. Happyhockum:

    Go ahead then Wildstrike.

Show us all where the rest of the computing industry is rushing to switch to Cell tech.

    You can’t cos they aren’t.

Like I said, PS3 (and the PS3.5 when it comes), the irony of Toshiba’s new upscaling tech HD TVs and IBMs non CE stuff.

    That’s where it ends.

Yet another failed Sony attempt to move the industry & dominate.

  85. darkwhitehair:

wait… someone is making lists here? are you new wildstrike? you can always tell the noobs…

  86. Happyhockum:

    I doubt it dwh.

    Something about the phrasing.

  87. darkwhitehair:

no no… people who make lists are noobs…

  88. CarlB:

“I don’t think you’re aware that certain games are only possible on the playstation 3″

Wow Wildstrike, did you just say Final Fantasy XIII and Tekken 6 were only possible on PS3? Is that why they are coming to 360 as well? 7 of the games on your proven “list” aren’t even out yet. I think you may may be right dwh.

    Spideydog,

I think PSN is Sony’s attempt to stay above water in comparison to Microsoft who beat them to the punch. I think PSN will be Sony’s future attempt at cashing in on taking out PS2 bc (if they do not put it back in) as they will inevitably start selling PS2 games on it. I also think PSN is an incredible success so far and has come exceedingly far since it’s launch.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Microsoft is incredibly happy about how much stuff you can get for free online either, their executives are just less publicly verbal about it.

  89. Spideydog:

    CarlB agreed ;-)

  90. darkwhitehair:

well… no one here has created software for either the PS3 or the 360… all we know is the hardware specs…

now if Kojima says he can make MGS4 on the 360… Ill believe him… but when a Bungie employee says Killzone 2 can be done in 360… that just pisses me off…

  91. Happyhockum:

What “evidence” were you after Wildstrike?

I already showed yoiu the proof about Xbox compression –

“Resident Evil 5 on 360 is 6GB thanks to data compresion but on PS3 it’s 13GB.”

If you’re too lazy to check it out if you refuse to believe it that’s your problem.

The rest as regard size ratios is simple maths.

(and you’ll also find reviewers saying the Xbox version of RE5 is the better of the 2)

The rest is about mere flannel.
Cut scenes and a stack of FMV bore me rigid after the 1st or 2nd showing, I can happliy do without it at the highest res setting possible.

    Carlb

It’s been interesting seeing the comments from the 2 companies.
I never thought I’d end up saying this but Microsoft is (surprisingly) the one that is far more open to ‘open sourcing’.

Michael Lynton’s comment is typical, Sony just sound more and more like a whining brat spitting the dummy and completely incapable of understanding what is going on.

  92. CarlB:

    Happyhockum,

I think Microsoft has a little bit more experience in this area on the software side, it will just take Sony some time (years?) to adjust and see the advantages.

  93. CarlB:

Also, the latest for disc capacity discussion is how developers were cutting off japanese dialog in Final Fantasy XIII for the other regions on 360. Sorry, but this isn’t a big loss for me.

  94. Happyhockum:

    CarlB

    Precisely.

It’s the same thing with Blu-ray.
They expect us/me to applaud as they try and make a virtue of including half a dozen or more languages and save themselves pennies by not having to produce a different pressing which is more language specific.
As far as I’m concerned it’s a waste of space which may (or may not, it’s not a simplistic science and you cannot just say – more space = higher bitrates = better picture & audio quality) result in a lesser quality product.
It certainly gobbles up space which could be devoted to much more interesting extras.

Sadly that seems to be a regular complaint.
Caught between the 2 stools of populism and commercial appeal and giving the highest quality possible.
They invariably claim the latter but fall gunning for the former.
