Modern Warfare 2 graphics mediocre by today’s standards?
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare remains as one of the best online FPS games out there. The game was spectacular when it came out with impressive cinematic cut scenes that put most movies to shame. However, the Call of Duty engine has been showing its age, which was evident in World at War.
Several games have used the Call of Duty engine including Quantum of Solace. World at War used an enhanced version of the engine and it was looking pretty outdated for what was out at that time. Judging from the teaser video for Modern Warfare 2, the game seems to be also using an enhanced version of the same engine.
I took a few snapshots from a HD version of the trailer in order to take a quick look at the graphics and textures that will be used in Modern Warfare 2. The game could receive a major overhaul before its launch, but I have a feeling that the developers at Infinity Ward may be pushing the engine to the limits with MW2.

As I mentioned previously, COD4 is one of my all time favorites and I am not in any way criticizing the mastery behind the series as the storytelling and cinematic have always been superb. However, I am starting to wonder if the developers have thought about building a new engine from scratch that is a bit more graphically updated.
I would love to see a huge improvement in graphics that would make even the best looking FPS out there pale in comparison. However, regardless of how the game looks I am sure that the gameplay will be as spectacular as always. What do our readers think? Does Modern Warfare 2 compare well to what’s out there now? Hopefully Infinity Ward will show more gameplay during E3 next month.

CS 1.6 and CSS look like crap compared to Crysis, but I doubt Crysis ever came close to the numbers of people who own and continue to play those games.
If you go and outpace the hardware (especially as people may be less likely to upgrade with the economic situation) that your customers owned, who the fook is going to buy it? Besides, the ‘Modern Warfare’ tag is going to sell this sucker anywhoos.
I think we can all agree that gameplay trumps graphics
I don’t know much about the title in terms of multiplayer, but I really hope someone makes a battlefield’ish game with the feel of hardcore CoD:MW, ahhhh that would be bliss.
May 16th, 2009
so this game won’t be as good as killzone…graphically
May 16th, 2009
because of that ported 360 bs, lmao jk
May 16th, 2009
i wouldn’t disagree with this article. But then again the gfx only make a small difference in a game, and the gfx aren’t too bad.

“Modern Warfare 2 graphics mediocre?”
Agreed…it must be the 360 version.

That’s an outrageous accusation Bourne.

After reading the article in GameInformer, I kind of though the same thing. The COD engine is starting to show it’s age a little. It doesn’t look bad at all, but it’s kind of lost it’s wow factor.
As far as a large massive battlefield FPS, MAG looks very promising. At first I wasn’t all that interested, but the more I see and read about it, I think that may be my next FPS purchase.
As far as impressive graphics, am I the only one who thinks Lost Planet 2 looks fantastic? The environments and large scale battles looks awesome.

In all fairness, I didn’t think COD4′s graphics were particularly spectacular to begin with. Compared to Heavenly Sword (on graphics alone) and Uncharted which came out a month later, the textures are horrible, even if the other graphics aren’t too bad.
I only compare it to those titles since I only had a PS3 at the time.
May 16th, 2009
Totally disagree with the above comment. COD4 was ground breaking and the sales back this up, that can’t be said for Heavenly Sword and Uncharted and even the Killzone for that matter.
It wasn’t just the graphics with COD4 anyway it was the whole atmosphere of the game.
If they do what Gears did i.e. improve the graphics, weapons, handling, scale and of course multiplayer this game will easily be a regular in gamers consoles for the next few years just like its predecessor
May 16th, 2009
I’m not sure you can really say COD4 was groundbreaking – what new ground do you consider that it broke?
As I said – I was talking about graphics ALONE, not gameplay – it’s COD4′s gameplay which has resulted in exceptional sales and awards, not its graphics.
May 16th, 2009
It was easily the best war games graphically of this generation.
“it’s COD4’s gameplay which has resulted in exceptional sales and awards, not its graphics.”
Nope
May 16th, 2009
You really think COD4 is “the best war games graphically of this generation”?
I love the game, but there are other war games with better graphics this generation. I point you to Killzone 2 & Crysis as examples. Same generation, better graphics.
And you really think COD4′s graphics were the main reason it has sold so well? Whilst they may have impressed early on (gaining acclaim for graphics at E3 in 2007), for this generation they’re nothing special, and others have outshined it both beforehand and since.
May 16th, 2009
Cod4-5 play so smooth so it makes up 4 everything and it still has good graphics
May 16th, 2009
Okay adam learn how to fucking read. You asked me how it was groundbreaking and I answered. I said it “was” not “is” the best war game graphically.
“And you really think COD4’s graphics were the main reason it has sold so well?”
“It wasn’t just the graphics with COD4 anyway it was the whole atmosphere of the game. ”
You don’t have much of an attention span do you???
May 16th, 2009
I think the problem is that you didn’t really say what beat CoD in terms of graphics in the sentance you wrote.
‘It was easily the best war games graphically of this generation.’ You should have added ‘until X came out in xxxx’ here, would’ve made more sense (Ill presume gears or something I suppose)
I also don’t like how you try to equate ‘groundbreaking’ with sales. ICO only sold 700,000 but many would consider it quite groundbreaking, go figure (I didn’t care for it much tbh).
“it’s COD4’s gameplay which has resulted in exceptional sales and awards, not its graphics.”
Hit the nail on the head. IMO I don’t see a whole lot ‘unique/original/groundbreaking’ with CoD4 at all – I guess I could say Hardcore Mode, because its fucking kewl to play with no HUD(and its the way CoD4 should be played IMO).
What it does have is awesome gameplay and the right blend of stuff that has been done before. There’s nothing wrong with that at all.
May 16th, 2009
I always think of scousers when I see the word kewl
dats kewl dat lahhhhh
May 17th, 2009
Seriously CON, before you suggest I learn how to read, I think you should probably learn how to right in correct and coherent english (see SW’s corrections).
As I said, it still WASn’t groundbreaking. Tense was irrelevant.
And I’m sorry, but when I suggested “it’s COD4’s gameplay which has resulted in exceptional sales and awards, not its graphics.†Your highly insightful response was “nope”.
Then you criticise me for suggesting that “you really think COD4’s graphics were the main reason it has sold so well?”
Please at least try to keep your opinions coherent and consistent.
Thank you SW for elaborating on what I’ve been trying to say.
May 17th, 2009
Sorry guys, but from the mess up there ^^, I think just on vibe, I’m with CON on this one.
I was expecting a new or seriously improved engine for MW2 though.
May 17th, 2009
LOL Come on guys this is simple english.
SW it wasn’t a sweeping statement, I was answering his question which he failed to comprehend.
Yes the tense does matter. If you’re going to ask me why I thought it was groundbreaking and I said it “was” the best graphically, what’s not to understand? Seriously.
“you really think COD4’s graphics were the main reason it has sold so well?â€
Sorry if you’re going to bring this comment up again you really are a moron. I already referred to that 3 comments before you asked. See below.
“It wasn’t just the graphics with COD4 anyway it was the whole atmosphere of the game. ”
Again what’s not to understand were you continually keep asking people to repeat themselves because of your short fucking attention span??
Okay Adam todays lesson was the word “was” and the number “3″ that being the number of posts you could only pay attention to before asking the same fucking question lol.
May 17th, 2009
Royzy the graphics probably won’t be as good due to the massive expectations after the first one but they will def be improved. It’s the things I’m hearing about silenced snipers and not limiting your perks i.e. you can’t have a red dot if you have silencer which are getting me excited
May 17th, 2009
So when is it coming out?
May 17th, 2009
November along with all the other games. Would be nice to have a few decent titles during the summer
May 17th, 2009
Con, As far as great games being released now, you should check out infamous, it looks like it’s a great game…. oh wait…
May 17th, 2009
COD MWII, won’t really be too much different from COD 4, or COD WAW. KZ2 offers close to the same thing game play wise, but the graphics are far superior. I think the next step in the COD franchise will be Lego COD.
MAG on the other hand, looks like it could really raise the bar for what a online FPS experience could be.
May 17th, 2009
November eh? Good, it will give me time to save some money and finish some games. I’ve started getting knee deep into The Last Remnant. It’s pretty good, but I think I like Lost Odyssey better so far.
May 18th, 2009
As long as the game is good i don’t care. This will be my first Call of Duty game.
May 18th, 2009
Call of Duty 4 and World at War are exactly the same game, they play the same and everything… its getting boring and outdated for me. Killzone bring a bunch of new features, the best graphics out there in any FPS. MAG is looking good and its bringing alot more to the genre than CoD.
but enough with FPS inFAMOUS is the next Big title.

I still remember when I first saw COD3 demoed on a 360 in a local store, my jaw hit the floor. I was amazed by what I was seeing. But that was a while ago, and we’ve seen the same thing for COD4 & COD Waw. Basically Modern Warfare 2 will offer another >10 single player campaign, plus the standard online mode. I’m thinking this will be a rent at best.
Glad to hear some one liked The Last Remnant, if it ever come to the PS3 I would consider it.
May 18th, 2009
Barnabe, I am pretty sure it’s coming out on PS3 this year sometime.
May 18th, 2009
Square Enix has strongly implied that the PS3 version of Last Remnant is no more. Zip. Gone. Kaput. However, no official statement has been made.

May 18th, 2009
Yeah, it’s really an odd situation. It was in development, then delayed, now they refuse to answer questions about it. I just wish they would be up front about it. If it’s canceled fine, but just tell us.
May 18th, 2009
@ Chris,
Really? Did they give any reason?
May 19th, 2009
No, Harry, they haven’t. The conference went something like this:
“So, how about the PS3 version of Last Remnant?”
-”Er… well, the PC version came out last week.”
“Yes, it did.”
-”So, that’s nice.”
“Yeah. How about the PS3 version?”
(silence)
…
(nervous glances around the room)
Seriously, that’s all I know of it.

lol most ya where stupid, especially that childish arguing. Cod4 is still the best first person shooter graphically, even over crysis, because, IT HAS REAL GUNS AND KNIVES AND UNIFORMS unlike crysis. games like that should be labaled Fantasy shooters. yes crysis has the best graphics over all, but not as a modern warfare shooter
only as a sci-fi shooter.
