E3 2009: All about motion-sensing on PS3 and Xbox 360?

E3 2009: All about motion-sensing on PS3 and Xbox 360?E3 2009 is just over a week away, beginning on June 2. There are sure to be many games announced, many surprises unveiled, and healthy competition between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Personally, I can’t help thinking that this E3 will be all about motion-sensing devices, with such controllers possibly set to be announced for both the PS3 and Xbox 360.

E3, or the Electronic Entertainment Expo for those with a hatred for acronyms, is the largest annual trade show for computer and video games. Its popularity and importance has varied over the years but it is still the show which gets the most attention and therefore has the most chance of securing the really big announcements from the big players in the industry.

There has been a ton of speculation over the course of the last year about motion-sensing controllers ad devices coming to both the PS3 and Xbox 360. If it’s going to happen in this generation then I suspect this year’s E3 will be when the devices are officially unveiled. Otherwise Microsoft and Sony may as well let Nintendo have this generation and concentrate on the next.

Nintendo has, of course, dominated this generation so far by releasing a console designed for the casual masses. A huge part of that was to go with a motion-sensing controller that mimicked real life. It was a gamble but one that has paid off many times over for Nintendo.

You can then understand Sony and Microsoft’s desire to grab a piece of that market, and what better way to do that than by designing and releasing their own motion-sensing control systems? With sales of the Wii possibly starting to wane, such a device could help Wii owners graduate up to one of the other systems.

Last summer saw the first serious talk emerge of a motion-sensing controller for the PS3 and Xbox being on the way. An Xbox 360 version of the Wii remote was rumored in April, while the same for the PS3 was rumored in June. This month has seen talk of both a motion-sensing camera add-on and patents for a new ‘magic wand‘ on the Xbox 360.

E3 2009 would seem to be the best bet for any of these rumored devices to be unveiled. Along with demonstrations of the new MotionPlus controller peripheral for the Nintendo Wii, this could turn out to be a motion-sensing haven for casual gamers. Or all the speculation could be absolute bull.

  3. Bourne:

I’ll be pissed if it is.

  4. Ivan_PSP:

I expect that motion wii style controller for xbox 360 but never for ps3 we hate junk and useless geeky controller hell no. I know Sony is not given a shit about wii controller.

  5. SW:

    ‘we hate junk’

    Yet we have six axis…

  6. me_:

    Don’t forget the eye-toy.

There’s nothing cheap, casual or junkie about that fine Sony product.

  7. lock_down:

Sony and Microsoft are far too late to try to enter this market now.

  8. Barnabe Jones:

I think there’s a good chance they’ll both take a shot at it anyway. Microsoft’s was already pretty much leaked. Sony already has Sixaxis in place, so they would be able to release a Wii mote pretty easily.

Hardware sales for the Wii are slipping, so now might be the perfect time for Microsoft and Sony to make there move. If it helps either of them close in on the Wii, I’ll be happy.

  9. Roca.:

I wouldnt like motion control for my ps3

  10. ncaissie:

If I want motion control I will play my kids Wii.
And I will not buy motion controls for the kids to play on my PS3. They play BLP and Sonic on the PS# and that’s enough.

    Then don’t buy it. Simple.
