Splinter Cell: Conviction gameplay analysis from 2007 Trailer
Splinter Cell: Conviction has been picking up some steam as E3 gets closer. The word on the street points toward a huge reveal of the game during the press conference. The game was supposed to come out in 2007, but it looks like it may finally come out this year. For those inpatient, a quick look at the original gameplay trailer may reveal many details about the game and what to expect.
In 2007, Ubisoft released a decent length gameplay trailer showing Sam Fisher kicking some butt. Recently, the company released two teaser trailers that showed absolutely no gameplay. The trailers zoomed in and out of the Earth with the voice narration of Sam Fisher.
Going back to the original gameplay footage a great deal of information can be gathered from it. After all, Ubisoft released the trailer in anticipation of releasing Conviction a few months later.
Conviction looks like a much more organic game then any of the other Splinter Cell games. You see Sam Fisher walking the streets in bum threads fighting cops on the streets.
Here are some observations that can be made from the trailer:
-
The game looks like it will be a full or partial open world game.
-
Emphasis on weapons is gone or greatly reduced (possible Faith from Mirror’s Edge situation)
-
Hand-to-hand is the main combat system (a la Metal Gear’s CQC technique)
-
Greater emphasis on stealth – Sam must navigate around a park undetected by the police
-
Stealth gameplay objectives – lure cops away with radios and setup decoys in order to achieve objectives
-
The main cannon fodder seems to be the police from the enemy side – possible Bourne Identity situation (conspiracy)?
As to why Ubisoft ended up delaying the game for two years is unknown. It seemed like the game was all set to release during holiday 2007 with Ubisoft gearing up marketing for the game. Hopefully the developers gave Conviction a complete overhaul over the past two years to make it the best Splinter Cell game ever. Who knows? The game could look two times better than what you see in the 2007 trailer.

I am glad they took another 2 years on that game, the trailer doesn’t look all that special.
Unrelated news, Adam Lambert was robbed.

Please give my condolences to Mr Lambert.

2 comments = bad. RIP Sam Fisher. You used to be cool a few years ago, but Ubisoft made sure that didn’t last long.
Mike, I suggest doing an article on Demon’s Souls or Trico. Both look really good.

Yes Mike do one on Those games because you have a loyal following of PS3 Trolls.

Awesome, Royzy, glad I’m not the only one…
Does Blorge have an HQ? I can’t even begin to imagine what that place would look like…

Blorge HQ is just a corridor with a chair at one end, facing out of the top floor window. Here sits John Pospisil, with Dave and Mike sitting either side feeding him grapes.

Ha Ha that was funny. I could so see it.

I like the blue background. If they could left justify the text, I think they should keep it.

Haha. Yeh Mike, it is still broken here too. Is the blorge land by any chance getting a re-design? Since the blorge.com home is completely different to the sub-sites.
Or has it always been…. I don’t know..
