Critics praise inFAMOUS as one of the best PS3 games to date

May 23, 2009

Critics praise inFAMOUS as one of the best PS3 games to date InFAMOUS has been receiving a good amount of press around the video gaming circuit. As the flood of reviews come pouring out, many are saying good things about the game. By now many PS3 owners have already gotten the chance to play the demo for inFAMOUS.

As many of you already know, inFAMOUS plays and looks absolutely fantastic. Sucker Punch has nailed down the gameplay to a science. The gameplay is so fun and fluid it is what really makes playing inFAMOUS so addicting. The reviews have started to come out in anticipation of the launch of the game and many of the top review sites have deemed inFAMOUS to be a AAA-title for the PS3.

GiantBomb gave the game a perfect score citing the solid basic gameplay mechanics as the deciding factor. 1UP gave the game an A- and stated, “Simply put, InFamous is the kind of game that when I’m not playing it, I’m constantly thinking about doing so.” Veteran game review site IGN called inFAMOUS “one of the best PS3 games to date,” giving the game a 9.2. Other mainstream review sites such as GameInformer, Gamespot and Gametrailers all gave the game a solid 9/10 as well.

hero_screen_and_depth_11

I have to agree with 1UP, as inFAMOUS really is a game that makes you think about it while you are not playing it. Literally you will be thinking about what to do next in the massive open world while at work. There are also a great deal of side missions to keep you occupied until you get the urge to get back to the main missions. The game feels like a solid platformer/shooter with RPG elements in the game.

For those who have yet to play inFAMOUS, there is an official 2D sidescrolling version of the game available as part of the game’s marketing campaign here. You can play the mini 2D game to get a glimpse into the world of inFAMOUS. Make sure to stay tuned for my review of the game coming soon.

  1. Knighthawk:

I don’t know, I was not all that impressed by the demo! Granted it’s only a very small % of the overall game, but I was just not blown away with what I saw. The graphics are really not that great IMO, the draw distance is really bad and alot of pop in from what I saw. Graphics are not the core element to a great game, but I found the gameplay to be pretty lackluster as well. Not that it was bad, but it’s so been there done that to me. Going to pick this up regardless because I need a PS3 game, getting so sick of World at War. Perhaps I’ll warm up to it a little more with the full retail version.

  2. Bourne:

Sure the graphics aren’t what we’ve seen before but who ever said inFAMOUS was all about the gfx? I really enjoyed the gameplay i think they’ve nailed it – nice and simple but it still makes you think sometimes about how to address different problems because you can just explore every bit of the area.

On a side note i really hope the ending video clip (of the demo when you finished the mission) becomes the advert i thought it was awesome.

  3. Mike Ferro:

    @Knighthawk,

Have to disagree with you there, for an open world game its the best graphics I haves seen to date. And pop-ins are to be expected for a massive open world game.

  4. darkwhitehair:

    *FACEPALM*

ok.. ok.. since I havent really talked to knighthawk Ill be gentle…

dear guy who I just saw commenting on blorge today…

EVERY SINGLE game has glitches… bugs… pop ins… its not the best game in the world… in fact while I was playing there was a LOT of clipping… at one point I went through an entire shed… just walked right through it…

also… its a demo.. it was a working version… not the final build… even the IGN review acknowledged that it had some graphical glitches…

now if you want a solid and fun game… this is it… if you played Sly Cooper on the PS2… you will like this one…

also if you dont like it… try the UFC demo… that games good…

Mike… I wont tolerate this during the coverage of God of War 3… I cant handle it… its too much…

nice to see you bourne… we dont get to talk anymore…

also while I was watching the opening cutscene… when he said “but inside there was a change *or war or something else* taking place” right then and there I knew I had to buy it… got goosebumps just from that cutscene…

  5. Ivan_PSP:

inFAMOUS is a master piece which i will get every trophy there is. The graphics are amazing the game play is awesome the world looks very detail and fun. The game is gonna have a lot of replay value. the only bad thing for me is no damn online play hope fully they will add it with a patch yeah right at least i can dream LoL. They need to add more gold trophies too. This game is a pure 10.

  6. SW:

heh, forgot there was a demo available…

Have to get that I suppose :)

  7. Knighthawk:

Thanks for sharing your opinions guys and not bashing mine! Guess I just expected a little more out of it from what I have been reading. I know it’s not the final build of the game, and it would not be the first time I thought a demo was not so great and ened up really liking the final retail version. Killzone was exactly like that for me.

  8. Royzy:

Sorry but I definitely agree with Knighthawk. I personally really did not find anything that special. The bits I did enjoy just reminded me of other games I enjoy more.

Mike I definitely think GTAs open world graphics are better presented than Infamous’s.

    Things I liked:

The running/climbing on pretty much anything
    Cinematics
    The speed/transporting bad guys
    Blasting away cars

    Things i didn’t like:

The lack of variety in vehicle models!?
The lack of contrast between hero and infamous, aside from it being ‘blue’ or ‘red electricity.
    Character models, particularly the enemies
Felt like one of the old Spidermans
That repetitive train mission on the demo
No ‘fun’ in killing civilians (come on, you know what I mean). It doesn’t feel like it changes anything.
    Hand fighting
    Just felt very ‘lightweight’.

I did play it through 3 times. I turned it off and deleted it after realising that blowing up cars for 10 minutes had lost its novelty.

This is my demo impression only.

  9. Addam:

I agree pretty much completely with what you’ve said Royzy.

I remember when Spiderman 2 came out – the graphics were far from spectacular (even at the time) but it’s the fun you have from just running around doing random things (similarly in Assassin’s Creed) that I really love about these games, so I’m still going to buy it, underwelming graphics or not.

  10. Barnabe Jones:

I am away for the weekend, so I haven’t had a chance to play it yet. Looking forward to it.

  11. kevo:

i like the game and all but i don’t know if its enough for me to drop 60+ dollars on it so we’ll see….but overall it will be a good game

  12. kevo:

i guess for most of you the demo needed more cowbell right?

  13. Ivan_PSP:

    Royzy:
Play the full game game then say that.
This game is worst every penny.
Everything is awesome and the train part is not repetitive at all.
This game can beat every Xbox 360 exclusive.

    Royzy:
I know you playing something else like maybe Spider-Man on Xbox 360

  14. darkwhitehair:

thats it… Im gonna rape you Roy… someone buy me a ticket to UK so I can go over there and put some sense into that boy…

read and watch the giantbomb review and quick look…

when you are a Hero… your powers are more focused… as in your powers hit your targets… and dont cause casualties… with inFamous… your powers are more destructive… you BLOW SHIT UP!

When you are Hero… every time you hit an enemy with lightning… you recharge your elec. power… with inFamous… you can spread that lighting and connect with other enemies and damage them at the same time…

seriously… check out the giantbomb quick look…

jeez.. I feel like Sucker Punch’s PR… have I found my true calling? meh…

also… SHUT THE FUCK UP IVAN! YOU ARE MAKING IT WORSE!

  15. CarlB:

Looks like Infamous got a solid score of 87 on metacritic, which puts it right up there with Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Resistance 2… not bad at all. It falls right behind about 20 multiplat games on the system and about 9 exclusives, which puts it in the top 30.

Royzy, how long did it take you to get through the game?

  16. kevo:

does this mean every non playstation owners on this site is going to get one for the exclusives coming to ps3?

  17. darkwhitehair:

Roy hasnt played the full game… he played the demo…

  18. CarlB:

“does this mean every non playstation owners on this site is going to get one for the exclusives coming to ps3?”

150$ Price drop, PS2BC put back in, God of War 3 and I’m in kevo. Exclusives that can’t even beat multiplats (which form the bulk of games out nowadays and which most gamers would be hard pressed to play through all the ones worth playing at this time) in review scores, are only slightly polished versions of what has already been done before, and/or are few and far in between do not interest me enough to drop another $400 (the same -except it would be $250 instead of $400- could be said if I owned a PS3 instead of 360).

  19. darkwhitehair:

    dont hold your breath Carl…

Im getting a little tired of everyone screaming for a price drop… the podcasts… the “analysts” the game critics…

how bout this… if you cant afford it… dont buy it… I saved up for more than half a year to buy a PS3… have some patience people…

  20. kevo:

i put out a loan on my ps3 and used the wii as collateral jk

  21. SW:

I sold my left ass cheek.

I always sit at a funny angle now :(

  22. darkwhitehair:

The console war got you down?
Did you have to put your house on a second mortgage to buy a PS3?

Call 1 800 4MY XBOX… We take care of you… and we are not douchbags like Sony… or Gay like Nintendo…

    We are hardcore…

Call us within the next few minutes to receive free internet money from Bill Gates…

  23. CarlB:

Dwh, I can afford it, but for me it is more a point of diminishing returns. At this stage I don’t have enough time to get through the 360 games, and if I’m going to invest in another console, it should at least have the one differentiating game out on it that I truly want and have the one significant feature in it that it had at launch to be able to play my existing game library.

    “have some patience people…”
I do, which is why I’m waiting for the conditions listed above. It’s not the nearly the success PS2 was at this stage in it’s life, so I expect it will take at least another year or two to drop and redesign, by which time it should have God of War 3. Hopefully.

  24. Royzy:

I didn’t have a problem with the powers in infamous. They felt kinda cool. It’s the lack of impact to the immediate area afterwards. Its the same thing every time. Doesn’t feel like genuine interaction. And I couldn’t get around how lacklustre the people and vehicles were.

Ivan, the train bit was repetitive. You stand on the roof while it moves. It stops, you go under the track, jizz lightning at a control box above you, then climb back up, stand on roof of train, it moves for a bit then it stops. Rinse and repeat how many times? Granted that is only one mission though.

It seems I must really must be missing the magic somehow. Which is a shame, because I thought I was going to end up purchasing it prior to play.

  25. darkwhitehair:

I understand carl… if youre excited about god of war 3… then you might as well wait till you can play god of war 1 and 2 on the ps3…

Im just frustrated with EVERYONE acting like an analyst and asking for a price drop… pisses me off…

Roy has been abducted by aliens… they have put xbox germs in him… CLEARLY he is wrong… he cannot have an opposing opinion… specially when its about a PS3 game…

    FANBOY!

  26. CarlB:

dwh, why are you getting so excited over the PS3’s version of Crackdown?

  27. darkwhitehair:

    *facepalm*

  28. SW:

@Royzy – You said it man. I think the game is decent, and I *was* going to buy it before I played the demo and now I’m kinda shakey/not going to buy it.

@Carlb – Because he is human?

Beats me why so many people got excited over the xbox’s space version(halo) of Wolfenstein 3D! But they did, go figure.

  29. Royzy:

    DWH_PSP

Never. Blorge Temple protects us from the contagious 360 types with a 20ft high concrete wall, painted with all our favourite PS3 characters. Though the external side has probably been spray painted with dicks.

  30. Royzy:

I’m glad SW agrees too. See, we are slowly raising an army of haters. There will be anarchy.

  31. Barnabe Jones:

Ok. I finally had a chance to give it a go. I have to say, that I din’t notice any pop in at all, and I did make it a point to look for it. I think the graphics are pretty sharp. It’s almost impossible to compare Infamous’s city, to Liberty City due to the different art styles- but Infamous’s city looks great. It’s certainly on par, if not better than GTA.

The layout of the controls reminds me a bit of Uncharted. I really dug the different powers and had fun with the missions. I also loved how fluid the platforming is.

All in all, I am vary happy with my pre-order. As far as demos go, it’s one of the best demos I’ve played. Most demos are basically just a cock tease, but the four full missions left me feeling pretty satisfied. Has anyone played the Sega Collection demo? They couldn’t even be bothered giving a full level of a Genius game.

  32. Barnabe Jones:

I haven’t decided if I’m going to play through as good or Christan Bale yet.

  33. darkwhitehair:

RAWR! Look at metacritic… Crackdown is CLEARLY INFERIOR! TO INFAMOUS!
    coincidence?

dont believe ROY.. he is clearly gay… and likes to be bummed by Aaron Greenburg…

  34. Royzy:

I fucking love Christian Bale. I hope his reference was a compliment Barn, don’t you ever take His name in vain. I’d take a bullet for him (well maybe not, but I do love him).

  35. Royzy:

Damn it DWH, you managed to slip the comment in appropriately.

I’m not gay. Only for Christian Bale. And Josh Homme. And Ivan.

  36. CarlB:

SW, Halo? I haven’t played that in at least 3 years… I heard 3 was alright, but I wouldn’t get excited over it.

Dwh, four more points in two years and at least twice the development costs? Seems like the least they could do. Meh.

  37. kevo:

the game is bundled in the UK….royzy u from there?

  38. Royzy:

    Yeah I’m UK kevo.

  39. harry sachz:

It’s probably going to go down a couple more points when the bulk of reviews start coming through too.

I would do ‘American Psycho’ Christian Bale, but not ‘Batman’ Christian Bale. I can’t take his ‘Batman voice’ seriously, he sounds like Patty and Selma when he does that.

  40. darkwhitehair:

now why do people make fun of that voice… look at it this way… would the real batman speak in a normal voice? NO! everyone knows bruce wayne.. and have heard him speak… therefore the voice is part of the costume… so dont make fun of it…

ahem carl… I present to you… TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING! TOOOOOOOOOOO HUMANNNNNNNN!!!!

    check mate…

also Im gay for the God of War… I will not tolerate negative comments on that piece of hot ass… scuse me… I gotta take a cold shower now…

  41. harry sachz:

I can make fun of his Batman voice because I think he sounds silly.

Too Human was 10 years in the making, during that time Silicon Knights switched platform to platform for it, as well as the game’s development being on a bit of a hiatus due to arguments about the Unreal engine. Once that was settled they ended up building their own engine from scratch. If all of the political/technical/decision issues were put together, it would have come out a lot sooner.

  42. harry sachz:

Sorry, I meant to say ‘if all of the political/technical/decision issues were avoided, it would have come out a lot sooner’.

All in all, I found it to be a fun hack and slash game. Have you played it dwh?

  43. SW:

‘I heard 3 was alright, but I wouldn’t get excited over it.’

My point exactly. DWH likes inFamous, you think its meh. Yay for being different!

There is no ‘right and wrong’ here, its opinion! Yay for opinion! You can’t justify it (no matter how much you try) by saying ‘oh gee they spent 452.3 years more developing it, it should be ‘uberer’ than game J’ or the development costs, or any of that garbage.

Accept he is excited about it, except that he personally may review the game higher than Crackdown. He already accepts that you don’t think much of it.

And as for bales voice in batman!!!!! Well, I never understood why they took it up a notch from how he spoke in Batman Begins as he had the gravel in that too. But meh, I didn’t mind at all.

  44. Barnabe Jones:

Roy, I’ve loved him in all of his movies also. You have scene the Terminator Salvation out burst right? I actually stole that line from a review I read.

Actually Cole’s voice is pretty close to Bale’s Batman, right? It’s a little over the top, but bearable.

  45. CAD:

    DWH

why should you be pissed off because people want a game system at a resonable price? The PS3 is the most expensive console to ever come out. $800 is crazy and out of the reach of most gamers. now it half that and it still too expensive. It’s like Carl B siad

“it is more a point of diminishing returns. At this stage I don’t have enough time to get through the 360 games, and if I’m going to invest in another console, it should at least have the one differentiating game out on it that I truly want and have the one significant feature in it that it had at launch to be able to play my existing game library”

BC is not that big a deal for me as my old library became trade-ins but i kept the classics. But I can still play them on my 360. Anyways DWH I think the real issue is that you will be pissed that when the price drops, that you would have already bought it at the higher price. We all know how cheap you are. Stealing internet connections, Pirateing games, etc etc………

  46. Barnabe Jones:

Here is my two cents on the PS3’s price: The Wii is $250 and Nintendo has been making money on the console since day one. Sony still sell’s PS3’s at a loss (about $40 now). Yes – it is the most expensive console on the market, but the amount of use I’ve gotten out of it, more than justifies the cost. If the price is too much for you, simply don’t buy it. The media loves to DEMAND a price drop from Sony, which is asinine.

The PS3 is decades ahead of the Wii and has a better line up, so naturally it should be more expensive. If we should be demanding a price cut from any of the consoles, it should be the Wii.

  47. Ivan_PSP:

Well PS3 is worth every penny and remember all lucky ps3 owners tomorrow is the date inFAMOUS launches.

  48. Royzy:

Barnabe haha yeah I heard the outburst, he went a tad crazy crazy. I’m pleased you love him too. I’m glad the industry people are sticking up for him, after a lot of the public-who-weren’t-there turned him into some kind of monster.

The BBC played a clip of it on live TV, but forgot to censor it. That was funny too.

  49. Royzy:

I didn’t think Cole’s voice was too gravely actaully, after a lot of people said it was. But then we have all played MGS.

  50. CarlB:

SW, calm down brother. I accept dwh’s opinion, and I don’t think the game is “meh”, I think the hype is “meh”. Meh.

  51. CarlB:

    Barnabe,

“The Wii is $250 and Nintendo has been making money on the console since day one”

The Wii has been $250 since day one while the others were $400+. The Wii is still outselling the competition tremendously and has handily snatched Sony’s previous throne, so Nintendo can take it’s time in a price drop. That said, I could easily see them having one this year.

The PS3 however is nowhere near Sony’s previous console iterations respective positions, and price is probably the major reason why. I understand it has the most features (which one may or may not use/desire) and why it is at it’s present price, but I also understand that it will continue to drop in price over time.

I already have one console that works fine for all my gaming needs, so I may pick up the other when it is bargain priced (for me). I do see the PS3 coming down to $250 eventually, I do see God of War 3 coming out eventually, and I do see a good chance of a redesign and PS2 bc being put back in eventually, so I am willing to wait a few more years if that is what it takes for all those factors to line up.

If they don’t, I’m fine with that also, as my 360 has and will continue to have more than enough good games for me to play and enjoy for the rest of this gen and beyond.

  52. Ivan_PSP:

    carlB:
You do realize that the only decent games for Xbox 360 are all multi-platform games so you better off selling your Xbox 360 while you can and buy PS3 exclusives. Microsoft without 3rd party lover will be nothing while Sony can survive alone. As for the Wii only stupid people buy that trash.

  53. CarlB:

Sorry Ivan, but when it comes to RPG’s (my favorite genre) the 360 still has over three times as many. Over all the genres it still has about 90 more favorably reviewed games than the PS3 and plenty more coming out, so I won’t need to buy another console this gen.

Sony lost the majority of AAA exclusives it had (i.e. the ones that were not on XBox last gen) and they are now on 360 as well, so the few that remain I can skip entirely or wait until the PS3 is in the bargain bin. Frankly, as a gamer, 1st/3rd party semantics really mean nothing as long as I have plenty of great games to play on my console in my genre of choice, which I do.

Sony came out the gates cocky this gen and got a fist implanted in it’s face from Nintendo and a kick in the balls from Microsoft, so now they are eating crow and doing everything they can to make up ground, which is really a great thing, because they have the opportunity to do some really innovative things. One which comes to mind is the rumor about game rentals online starting with PSP games, but they could move on to console games.

    “Sony can survive alone”

Surviving is what they are doing while the others are thriving.

  54. Barnabe Jones:

Roy, lord knows I’ve said and done somethings over the years that I regret. The difference is Bale had a camera on him. I can’t really judge the man. I read that line in a review for Infamous somewhere, and it made me laugh. Actually, I don’t think I have disliked any of his movies.

Carl, Competition is a good thing. Just look at what happened to Nintendo when they went unchallenged. They’re completely out of control, and yet the sales keep pouring in. The main thing that sticks in my craw, is how the media tries to dictate Sony’s business strategy.

When i look at the PS3’s price, features offered, and library of games, and then compare it to the Wii’s price and features offered, and library of games – the PS3’s price looks cheap in comparison.

  55. Barnabe Jones:

As far as having a 360 and considering a PS3 (or vise versa), that’s a fair enough statement. I own a PS3 and would be happy with a 360, but I don’t really need a 360. There’s a few games I’d like to check out, but I’m already overwhelmed with the PS3’s offering. I might still pick one up towards the end of this gen though. That way the system and the games will be cheap.

  56. kevo:

if ps3 only had better launch software they wouldn’t be hurting as much i think…uncharted and resistance, etc are great games but it didn’t do as well as say gears or whatever

  57. Ivan_PSP:

Every please read this especially if you a Xbox 360 only owner this are all facts which can be check anywhere is all legit not lies.

    CarlB:
Sony’s is getting better RPG check it out. Sony has the most exclusives a lot more then Xbox 360 plus is basically getting almost every single Xbox 360 exclusive. The only reason Microsoft is ahead of Sony is because they had a year head start plus it cost less well for less technology that is. The PS3 has a great price it cost less then the premium Xbox 360 it think about it. Just the WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) cost $100 and the 120 HDD $150 Xbox Live $50 for a useless service with cheaters lagers and 12 years piece of shits. And is not very reliable either no model what model you get you can get a bad system no quality. Also the Xbox 360 main menu was done by restated morons that shit is so fucking clutter and confusing is insane not very useful. And it uses too many Xbox 360 CPU. Also Xbox 360 is all about having DLC and timed exclusives while PS3 has DLC and exclusives for ever plus a lot of brand new IPs our exclusive from SCEA stay we us for ever. Microsoft doesn’t even have good studios to make games that’s why they try to buy timed exclusives pathetic. And the PS3 PLAYSTATION Network is reliable with no lagers plus millions of people and is all free. Plus the PLAYSTATION Store has movies in HD 1080p while Xbox 360 only has 720p. Also PLAYSTATION Home is awesome really fun and is free and optional to have. And the PS3 you can install Linux OS and make a kick computer that can Blu-ray Disc. Sony gives you everything right away at no extra cost like Microsoft and they still manege to have less then Sony. On PS3 the Photo Application is awesome on Xbox PS3 look normal no innovation for photographers no fun thing to do. PLAYSTATION Eye also is a good PS3 peripheral which is ton of fun you can make many funny home video with Eye Create Application. And the PS3 has the best XMB (Xross Media Bar) very easy to navigate and it looks cool too way better then the crappy one on Xbox 360. The PS3 can print too is compatible with every printer another cool PS3 feature. Also the PS3 has a built in web browser something even the PSP has and Xbox 360 doesn’t even have Internet Explorer. PS3 also has “Life with PlayStation” a application that les you see the weather worldwide with news feed from Google News another great thing is folding@home is helping find cure for cancel just leave your PS3 idle when you not playing and you are helping a lot of people in need to live a healthy fun life courtesy of Sony and the PSN users. Also the PS3 has another great application which is Remote Play with PSP you can turn on your PS3 from anywhere in the world as long as they both connected to the internet which lets you video all your PSP photo music video wallpaper and many more awesome cool things. Sony has a great customer service when you call your will talking to a agent right away ready to help you, not like Microsoft you can’t even understand their customer service rep they all basically from outside USA and always give you bad help or no help at all pathetic.

My points are PLAYSTATION has better games better reliability Awesome price free online service more value then Xbox 360 will ever have buy it now you will never regret it you will love it is a really fun system to own plus is just $400.

Proud owner of a 60GB and 80GB models both are backwards compatible with PS2 both are from the year 2007.

  58. CarlB:

    Barnabe,

    “Competition is a good thing.”

This is why I said it “is really a great thing” because it opens them up for some forced innovation.

Nintendo is only going “unchallenged” because they were the first to find that “blue ocean” and the competition is still trying to figure out a way to compete, late in the game after the damage has already been done. Nintendo’s been around a lot longer than Sony or Microsoft and is putting what they learned with their handhelds to the test with it’s consoles.

Nintendo got burned by only releasing games with it’s “seal of approval” so now it is letting up on the restrictions and appealing to a different audience. That’s fine and it has brought a lot more people into the gaming fold, but Nintendo’s not going to rest on it’s laurels anytime soon.

The media doesn’t “dictate” Sony’s strategy, it simply points out why it is last this gen, which is pretty clear to most basic consumers anyway. Blu-ray hasn’t provided a clear, significant advantage for gaming yet, and most are still happy with DVD for both movies and games. Considering the hundreds of games that are out for each console it is no surprise they go for the less expensive, most popular ones out of the box.

Personally, I would buy a PS3 over a Wii simply because of blu-ray, superior graphics, superior games, and it’s newly incorporated trophy system. But I imagine the budget minded couple with young kids who really do not know much about games is going to go for the Wii first if they do not get a 360 Arcade. Why? Because they are both significantly cheaper out of the box to start into gaming and they are both marketed more towards kids and family.

I totally agree with you on one or the other, but for me I didn’t want to wait a whole year to get into this gen, which is why I went with 360. The thing about the end of this gen though is that the next gen systems will already be calling.

kevo, the year head start the 360 had is what really killed the PS3. Combine this with the Wii launching at the same time for a fraction of the price, PS3 games having no trophies, PS2 still releasing games consistently after the PS3 launch, and a junior network, it’s really no surprise the PS3 is where it is today.

  59. kevo:

true 360 had the good software right out of the launch while sony had good hardware going…both are reasons to go out and buy the systems…its funny because if you think about it 360 released faulty hardware and would fix it over time with lots of games while ps3 had good hardware and while developing games over time just thought i throw that out there

  60. Roca.:

    Carlb:

“Blu-ray hasn’t provided a clear, significant advantage for gaming yet, and most are still happy with DVD for both movies and games.”

you say that because you dont own a PS3 yet, MGS4 can only be done on the PS3 because it uses a full blu-ray disc, Uncharted same thing. even Gran Turismo takes full advantange of the Blu-ray disc.

The 360 is ruining great franchise like “DMC4, GTA4, RE5, etc. im not saying those game suck but for example GTA4 could have looked better, RE5 didnt bring anything new, and could have look better too (MGS4 and Uncharted look better to me) etc.

For the ppl complaining about the price of the PS3.. how have you spend on XBL, on batteries, Wi-fi adaptors. more than $800 by now i bet.
while we pay $400 for our console and the rest on GAMES.

    CAD

you make no sence. 360 has no games.
    How old are you really??

  61. Knighthawk:

“if ps3 only had better launch software they wouldn’t be hurting as much i think…uncharted and resistance, etc are great games but it didn’t do as well as say gears or whatever”
    @Kevo

Do you remember the software for the PS2’s launch? It was pretty pathetic to say the least. Also the 360 didn’t exactly have a great offering at launch either. Come to think of it, neither did the Wii other then Zelda. However all these systems have sold more then the PS3. So while I see your point, it’s does take time to build a library of games for a console. People know that more and better games will come. No my friend it was the PS3’s launch PRICE and current price compared to the competetion that is hurting it’s sales.

“You do realize that the only decent games for Xbox 360 are all multi-platform games so you better off selling your Xbox 360 while you can and buy PS3 exclusives. Microsoft without 3rd party lover will be nothing while Sony can survive alone. As for the Wii only stupid people buy that trash.”
    @ Ivan_PSP

    ….Ah why bother! lol

  62. Barnabe Jones:

“the year head start the 360 had is what really killed the PS3.”

-The PS3 isn’t dead and the year to date sales more than prove that. Considering the 360s year head start, the PS3 is not getting trumped by the 360 by any stretch of the imagination.

I think the year head start, was one of history’s greatest marketing strategies ever. On the surface, sure the 360 has more sales, but if you look a little deeper, and actually look at what’s happening… Sony has already taken the lead for consoles sold per year.

  63. Roca.:

And the 360 is going down soon. everyday there are more ppl moding their 360 and playing games for free. once developers notice that. they are going focus on making games for the PS3 and take advantage of the Cell and SPU

  64. Arvis:

For the record, I played the Infamous demo and thought it kicked GTA’s butt sideways. I am, however, exceedingly biased in this regard seeing as how I loathe GTA with all of my being.

Seriously, though, Infamous manages to create an open-world game with true freedom of movement and purpose, but with SUPERPOWERS instead of boring guns. Visually it’s far more impressive than GTA as well. Not to mention that it’s entertainment value doesn’t rely on base sex and gore, and it gives the player a true sense of having consequences to actions.

That being said, I’m still not exactly doing cartwheels for this title, but I’m more excited than I was a month ago.

    -Arvis

  65. Roca.:

    Arvis,

Thanks for your review. good to hear u like the demo.

  66. CarlB:

Barnabe, sorry, didn’t mean to say it was dead, just why it is where it is now in sales position. I don’t see that changing greatly in the next few years if all the consoles maintain their present pace of sales (Sony can narrow the gap but not overtake this gen at the rate they are going so far), unless something earthshaking happens (doubtful).

  67. CarlB:

Roca, core gameplay trumps slightly better graphics anyday, and you only mentioned a few games which make hardly any difference in console sales in the face of multiplatform games and what has already been released this gen.

As for modding, the same is happening with the IPhone and DS, but they seem to be doing fairly well. If it had that big of an effect you would not consistently see more software sales for 360 than you do for PS3.

  68. Roca.:

    CarlB-

Get a PS3 and you’ll know what im talking about.
Because u dont know what ur talking about.

PS3 has better exclusive, Blu-ray is better for gaming. if 360 games sells better then why most of the profit from EA, Activition, Konami and Ubisoft came from the PS3. and please look that up before making stuff up. Sony own more game studios than M$ and nintendo combine which mean more exclusive on regulas basis, instead of waiting for the holiday like 360 owners do.

IPhone and DS being moded. developers can live with that. their games dont cost 10-40 millions to make so they make profit no matter what. now 360 is another story.

  69. CarlB:

broheem, I’ve been around for six generations of videogaming and have seen MGS4 in action, so I know what you are talking about. There is a lot of cutscenes and some good graphics, but if the game is good that stuff doesn’t really matter.

The entire PS3 library is about 10 percent exclusive, and only 3 slightly interest me as a gamer. While blu-ray may allow for less discs on game, there are still relatively few that have utilized it fully. Maybe by the time the next gen begins we will see it used regularly, maybe not.

Where did you get the information that most of EA’s, Activision’s, and Ubisoft’s profit came from PS3 specifically? Link please. You may be referring to PS2 and PSP sales. I could see Konami, but only because of one title which probably would have sold just as much on 360. Otherwise the top ten multiplatform titles (new and old) do about almost twice as much in sales on 360 vice PS3 worldwide.

Sony owning more gaming studios means more exclusives for PS3, both good and bad, which still do not outsell multiplatform titles and many times cost more to develop. While hits may do okay, misses wind up costing Sony dearly. It still has a few years to go before it develops a really enticing library, at which time I may reconsider, but by then we will probably be looking at the next gen anyway.

360 is still doing better than PS3 in both software sales and console sales, so maybe being able to mod it is actually helping sales.

  70. harry sachz:

It has dropped down to 86 now.

  71. CarlB:

Harry, yep, it’s still “one of the best” PS3 has to offer.

But didn’t you know? “inFAMOUS is a master piece” and “This game is a pure 10.” Ivan said so, and he is obviously the spokesperson (while being indicative of the average PS3 consumer) and face of all things PS3, so heed well his words of wisdom. MASTERPIECE

  72. SW:

    Ugh…

Oh, Harry, you posted in the wrong thread :) (the 85 thingy in the 360 E3 thread)…

  73. Knighthawk:

“I don’t know, I was not all that impressed by the demo! Perhaps I’ll warm up to it a little more with the full retail version.”

I’m happy to say that I judged this game way too fast based off the demo. Got the game yesterday, only played for about an hour and am quite impressed! If you own a PS3 you are really missing out of you do not play this game! Pretty much everything I nagged about in my above quote about the demo is considerly better!

  74. Roca.:

“Sony owning more gaming studios means more exclusives for PS3, both good and bad, which still do not outsell multiplatform titles and many times cost more to develop. While hits may do okay, misses wind up costing Sony dearly.”

Its not like its coming out of my pockets. so i dont care how much it cost as long as i can buy them for $60.

    -CarB

“Sony owning more gaming studios means more exclusives for PS3, both good and bad, which still do not outsell multiplatform titles ”

and whats ur points??? they are still coming out on the PS3. so that means even more games for me to buy

More studio means more games, better games, good looking games, awesome games, games that brings something new to the gaming expierience

  75. CarlB:

“Its not like its coming out of my pockets. so i dont care how much it cost as long as i can buy them for $60.”

Your right, it’s coming out of Sony’s pocket, which isn’t bottomless. It’s a gamble for them, one which may or may not pay off. I would argue that there are relatively few titles that Sony has brought to market that actually bring something “new” to the gaming experience, but I am grateful for them anyway, as it means more for all of us to play.

It’s actually a great thing they are still in the market though, and I hope to see them meet the PS3’s “potential” someday. In the meantime, we can all benefit from them still surviving in the market and bringing out the relatively few quality games they do.

  76. Arvis:

As opposed to the BARRELS and BARRELS of quality games Microsoft makes every year, right Carl?

    -Arvis

  77. SW:

Pfft, we all know they come in crates.

    Fool… ;)

‘but I am grateful for them anyway, as it means more for all of us to play.’

And also for not making this a 2 horse race (or a 1 one horse if you only want a ‘gaymerz conzollesssss’)!

Still, if sony packed in the hardware game, I wonder if they would use all thier studios to release for extra $$$ or just try to sell them all off?..

  78. CarlB:

    Arvis,

Nope. Just all the others put together means 5+ games is a drop in the bucket. Not like Sony really has a choice right now, as they’ve already committed. They should do fine for the rest of the gen even if they don’t change anything.

SW, I imagine they would stick with software like Sega has… and probably do a much better job of it.

  79. Roca.:

    @ CarlB

“I would argue that there are relatively few titles that Sony has brought to market that actually bring something “new” to the gaming experience”

Warhawk – 32-player online battlefield (tanks, jeep, jets/planes, jetback, trucks, turrets, a huge aircraft)

    Resistance 2 – 8 player Co-op, 60 player online multiplayer.

    MAG -256 Online multiplayer

LittleBigPlanet – Everything about this game is a new expirience.

Siren – Episodes-type of horror game.

Killzone 2 – Warzone mode (if you dont know what it is, look it up)

    PixelJunk Eden – Youtube

ill stop now if you want me to keep going let me know

…im not making any list im just answering CarlB question

    @ Arvis

“As opposed to the BARRELS and BARRELS of quality games Microsoft makes every year, right Carl?”

    LMAOOO

  80. CarlB:

roca, yes you not only made a list, but one you used before, to which I already answered LBP and Warhawk are the only ones 360 doesn’t really have an answer for. All the rest has already been done on PC or other consoles, and better, by other companies.

I know you’re in love with your new PS3 and only really played Left 4 Dead and Gears of War on your 360, but give it a break.

  81. Roca.:

I played alot more games on the 360 than you will ever do ok. I used to work for microsoft Tech center in Massachusetts.

  82. CarlB:

I’m sorry, maybe I misinterpreted when you stated, “I liked the 360 but if was not playing Gears of War or Left 4 Dead it was collecting dust.”

  83. Roca.:

yeah because those were the only to good ones.

  84. CarlB:

I guess it was playing dust while you played through all the others then?

  85. CarlB:

    collecting dust
