E3 2009: Nintendo to show Wii Fit Plus, and new Mario and Zelda?

E3 2009: Nintendo to show Wii Fit Plus, and new Mario and Zelda?E3 2009 is almost upon us. I can almost smell the excitement coming from some of you. While all eyes will be firmly fixed on Sony and Microsoft, let’s not forget that Nintendo will also be in attendance. What is Ninty going to pull out of the bag this year? Will the big guns of Mario and Zelda be brought out or will it be more of the casual gamer fare the company has served up in recent years?

Mike has recently concluded summing up what he thinks Sony and Microsoft are going to do at this year’s E3 (June 2 – 4). But what about Nintendo? Last year saw some big announcements made by the company – MotionPlus, Wii Speak, Wii Sports Resort, and Wii Music – but the highly anticipated new Mario and Zelda games were nowhere to be seen. Will this year be any different?

Macquarie Research has unveiled its annual E3 preview and it understands that Wii Fit Plus will definitely be unveiled at the conference. But better than that they “expect Nintendo to learn its lessons from last year and provide more gamer-centric announcements at E3 such as a new Zelda or Mario title for the Wii.”

A new addition to the Wii Fit brand is almost a given because millions of people have bought the original ‘game’ along with the Balance Board. It looks as though Wii Fit Plus will be shipped on its own and in a bundle, ensuring Nintendo another huge payday from all of those middle-aged female Wii owners looking to tone their booty.

As for a new Zelda or Mario game, this looks like pure guesswork, but it would make absolute sense. Some sort of announcement regarding one of the two gaming behemoths was expected this time last year so it’s now well overdue.

As TechRadar suggests, adding to the chances of this happening is the fact that Shigeru Miyamoto will not be appearing on stage at E3 as he usually does. Shigsy is now focused more on casual games and so a non-appearance likely ups the chances of a new Mario or Zelda title being unveiled.

E3 2009 is a huge event for all three home console manufacturers and Nintendo has as much to lose or gain as Sony and Microsoft. With the Wii starting to lose its luster a little, a big announcement or two, or even a price cut for the hardware, would go a long way towards turning the sales pointer upwards again.

they dont really need to do anything, E3 is a tiny, tiny battle in a war that they have pretty much won, and dont nintendo userly go for bust in that JAP game show each year?

  2. lock_down:

Just get Reggie on stage; instant win.

‘huge payday from all of those middle-aged female Wii owners looking to tone their booty.’

Do you have something against middle-aged women?

  4. Knighthawk:

So if Nintendo announces a new Zelda game at this years E3, do you know what that means? It means it should be ready by the time Nintendo brings out a new system and of course there will be a version for the Wi too! Either way, I’ll be excited, Zelda is one of my favourite franchises of all time!

That will also be Nintendo’s saving grace “look we have Mario and Zelda”. Never mind the fact that they have consistently been releasing crap for the last few years. I would bet a million dollars they will have a game called “Wii…. something”, that will lookout dated and play like crap.

  6. SW:
