Report: PS3 has more quality games than Xbox 360
There is very little doubt that all next-gen consoles (Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii) have their share of good games as well as not-so-good games. However, the debate has raged on for some time as to which console has better quality games overall. To settle this debate a research firm has released a report indicating that the PS3 has the highest percentage of quality games.
Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) firm recently released a very interesting report regarding the trend in video games. According to Gamedaily, the report talks in length about how the congestion of video game launches during holiday season is mainly attributed to how well games have been selling historically. The other interesting tidbit from the report declares that the PS3 was found to generate more high-quality games as a percentage than any other next-gen console.
EEDAR also found that only five percent of next-gen games received a score of 85 or higher. Sony’s PS3 is said to have 13 percent of its titles rated 85 or higher, while the Xbox 360 has 10 percent. The difference is not that much but I am sure this will ruffle some fanboy’s feathers and a few will even predictably start counting off the numbers of games in different ranges.
Jesse Divnich director of Analytical Services at EEDAR indicated that systems like the Wii, DS and PSP are flooded with much lower quality games than the PS3 and Xbox 360. Interestingly enough, Divnich indicated that it is not the number of good games that score 85 or higher that contribute to the high quality percentage but the number of games that are rated below 54.
Before fanboys go to war, keep in mind that the PS3 has not been out on the market long enough yet to pick up all the crappy games. Once the PS3 reaches mid-life crisis stage, the console will pick up at least 20 different iterations of Sponge Bob shovelware games.

Who cares how much shovel ware crap is on a platform. Nobody forces you to buy it.
Come on Mike, tell us the absolute number of top rating games for each platform.
You may have to change the title of your article.

It’s just playing games with percentages to provoke.
Nothing more.
PS3 might indeed have a higher % of 85%+ games.
But as there are more Xbox games out there even a lower % for Xbox means little when there are numerically more 85%+ games on Xbox.
Kids at elementary school could work this stuff out easily, so what is the supposed grown-ups excuse here Mike, eh?
May 30th, 2009
Wii = 2% of its titles rated 85 or higher. That doesn’t stop anyone from buying it though.
Well at least the 360 has the higher percentage of failure ratio. That’s at least something, right?

“However, the debate has raged on for sometime as to which console has better quality games overall. To settle this debate a research firm has released a report indicating that the PS3 has the highest percentage of quality games.”
The report was actually for videogame release timing and to see if Q4 was getting too many releases, not to settle a debate over which console had better games overall.
Right now there are about 90 more titles (241) favorably reviewed on 360 compared to PS3 (149), but even this won’t settle anything because there are fans of Sony’s last gen franchises eating up every present gen iteration exclusive and eagerly awaiting the ones to come, and rightfully so.
So while the PS3 may have 3 more percent of it’s releases being “higher” quality, they need this in order to catch up to the amount of titles favorably reviewed on 360 (and console/software sales). Even if PS3 has been out on the market for a year less than 360, it still needs to maintain this percentage (and perhaps more) to catch up to 360.
And even if PS3 doesn’t catch up to 360 in sales, it will still have done a fine job of releasing a very impressive amount of quality titles this gen.
Title: “PS3 currently has higher percentage, but lower total of quality games than 360″
This debate will never be “settled”, but the best we can hope for is to break it down:
360 has at this time more “quality” (favorably reviewed) titles in total than PS3. It has also been out a year longer and has more unfavorably reviewed titles as well.
PS3 has a significant fanbase that values it’s exclusives more than any amount of quality games on other systems.
Owners of one or the other (or both) will generally have more than enough to play enjoyably for the rest of the gen.
Interestingly enough, PS2 only has about 9% rated 85 or higher, so maybe you do have a point about the age of a system directly contributing to it’s percentage of quality titles.
While a few really amazing titles are released near the end of a generation, there do seem to be an amazing amount of lower quality titles being released in greater quantities to capitalize on the existing user base. This is probably why the DS has the highest percentage of lower quality titles, because every developer wants to exploit a massive user base.

hahahahah. Oh this is gonna hurt. lol
I am happy with games being offered on both systems.
May 30th, 2009
“I am sure this will ruffle some fanboy’s feathers”
Not really. 10 and 13 percent. When you factor in that the 360 has maybe double the game that the PS3 has that is a great testiment to the quality of 360 games.
May 30th, 2009
Thats a good argument CAD … we have twice as many games, so that means better quality ??
May 30th, 2009
“90 more titles (241) favorably reviewed on 360 compared to PS3 (149)”
Facts is facts.
Almost double the number of top titles on Xbox compared to PS3.
It’s just Mike playing and clealry Spideydog is once again tripping over his self-proclaimed ‘fair and balanced’ approach.
Bit like being as ‘fair and balanced’ as Fox News.

@Happy,
well to clarify on my story the 360 has 60 titles that score 85 and above, while the PS3 has 48 titles that score 85 and up.
Although, I really do have to give props to Sony for keeping PSN titles high in quality.
However, XBL has been improving with great titles like Castle Crashers and Braid.
Which is great for me – more great games to feed my fix.
May 30th, 2009
Happy, not that it really means anything, but perception could differ slightly on what ranges you’re looking at and how you look at them. The media can do this sometimes with seemingly innocuous information to paint a picture which isn’t necessarily accurate just to generate hits.
To clarify my earlier comment, “favorably reviewed” is scoring 75 or greater (at the time of comment on Metacritic, which may or may not be the best source for this). For some more perhaps meaningless numbers:
95 or above
360-3-60% (of titles rated 95 or above between PS3 and 360 only)
PS3-2-40%
90 or above
360-21-61%
PS3-13-38%
85 or above
360-60-56%
PS3-48-44%
80 or above
360-142-58%
PS3-103-42%
75 or above
360-241-61%
PS3-152-39% (this range increased by 3 since last post, probably new releases on the borderline)
So for the majority of games across all ranges, I would say it is closer to only 20% more (vice the “almost double” you mentioned) favorably reviewed titles in general on 360 as opposed to PS3. This may seem minor now to some (only 90 more titles favorably reviewed on 360), but could add up if maintained into the future.
Again, this isn’t going to settle anything, as many fans of certain genres, exclusives, or franchises on either system do not really care about totals across the board for all.

Another shameless article from Mike distorting reports to start a pro ps3rd flamewar.
May 30th, 2009
“Sony’s PS3 is said to have 13 percent of its titles rated 85 or higher, while the Xbox 360 has 10 percent”
Mike thank you for trying to justify yourself, but I beleive the research is based on the whole Library where 13 Percent of PS3 games are rated 85 or higher and 10 Percent of 360 games are rated 85 or higher. Now I’m not about to count the whole Library but we now it’s almost Double. That being the case means less shovelware on the 360 and more quality games. It was a nice smoke and mirror research that actually shows the 360 in a good light. I know Mike it not what you wanted but that’s what happened. Be careful what you write next time, it just might make the 360 look good and we know how much of a PS3 Fanboy you are.
May 30th, 2009
“we now it’s almost Double” should be “we know it’s almost double.
May 30th, 2009
If anyone was reading the posts in Mikes article on the new HD Zune you will see that he clearly copied Dave’s story in the Windows section and completly reworded it to start a flame war.
I’m getting pretty sick of Mike keeps doing here. This article is a perfect example. The data that Mike was referring to is clearly in xbox’s favour yet he takes a single statistic in favour of the ps3 and writes a whole article???
May 31st, 2009
Hmmm, don’t really see what some of you are getting worked up over here. Other then the title of the post, it’s actually pretty unbiased if you ask me. Agreed some of Mike’s posts I have found to be utter flamebait, but have to say this is not. He was just pointing out the research numbers and then his opinion was pretty fair regarding those numbers. Bottom line, the PS3 and Xbox 360 both have great games and a good load of garbage games! I recommend buying both systems if you can afford to do so, they are both great systems. I find it funny how some people own one system and then bash another when they don’t own it and likely have not even given it a chance. That’s fanboys for ya! lol

Because we all come here for gentleman like conversation, right?..

“It’s just Mike playing and clealry Spideydog is once again tripping over his self-proclaimed ‘fair and balanced’ approach.”
HH – Would you sit the down and take some blood pressure pills. Your venomous attacks are nauseating.
Nothing there was I saying that 360 or ps3 games were better. So yeah, I was being balanced. I just posed a question as to why double the games means better quality. Simple, no favour, no malice.
Your version of “fair and balanced” is beating the shit out of ps3 and blowing bubbles out the ass of the 360.
Go cry me a river and settle down a bit. You will give yourself an aneurism.
May 31st, 2009
Fanboys are obviously upset by this news, makes for entertaining viewing though.
May 31st, 2009
What news?
May 31st, 2009
“Other then the title of the post”
wow, somebody else here notices the total inaccuracy of the titles here too (most all of them from Mike praising the PS3 or making ludicrous claims about Microsoft- complete with flamebait pictures in the article)…
May 31st, 2009
For flamebait see: “Well at least the 360 has the higher percentage of failure ratios. That’s at least something, right?”
Mike’s article wasn’t that bad. He’s just reporting on a study. He also made sure to mention that the 360 has had more games in total.
May 31st, 2009
Other than the totally inaccurate title, misrepresenting the information within to support it (which it doesn’t), then “mentioning” information that refutes the title in a comment (not a note or update to the article itself), you’re right Barnabe, it “wasn’t that bad”.
Title sets the tone, and your quote is from somebody that took the bait to fan the flame. Besides, I expect that kind of talk from you by now.
May 31st, 2009
It was just a joke. If I didn’t say it, someone would have eventually. I just beat them to the punchline.
June 1st, 2009
You really want Ivan’s job that bad?
June 1st, 2009
the article should be “PS3 has better 1st Party Exclusive than the 360 1st party games”
June 1st, 2009
Spideydog:
“Your venomous attacks are nauseating. ”
LMAO
Yeah, it’s me that should relax and not blow things up into a laughably exaggerated deal.
You are funny.
June 1st, 2009
so…according to the ps3 fanboys:
1. the ps3 has the best exclusives
2. the ps3 has the highest rated games.
3. the ps3 has a bluray player
4. the ps3 has wifi
5. the ps3 is the best value on the market…
…..
…and yet…. the ps3 is continously getting spanked in the sales.
i’m starting to think the ps3 fanboys may be wrong….. opinions are nice….

Kev
“i’m starting to think the ps3 fanboys may be wrong”
And you would be wrong. All that proves is there are a lot of retards in the world. Your trying to read more into it. MOST people buy things because they are cheap not because it’s better.
There for the 360 sells more (in the US).
We all know with the US economy in the state its in everyone is watching what they spend.
And if you think otherwise then your insane.

you guys are so silly.
The title is 100% correct and the vast majority of the other sites have it in a similar fashion from Gamedaily to Gamespot.
May be I should have had the title as: “PS3 games best rated” like Gamespot.
Anyway, I know some of you want me to dumb down the title so it doesn’t get as much attention and all that, but as every site in the industry does it, the title needs to grab people’s attention whether it is good or bad news to your respective fanboy console of choice.
With that said, I really am happy you guys are coming here and commenting here rather than on Gamedaily or some other site. The debates you guys have going are great. Keep up the good comments.
June 1st, 2009
“May be I should have had the title as: “PS3 games best rated†like Gamespot…”
Actually, yes that would be at least twice as accurate as what you have here Mike. No need to “dumb down the title” as this one is about as dumb as it gets. I know the title needs to “grab people’s attention,” but that usually doesn’t give sites “in the industry” license to post totally inaccurate ones.
Of course, I wouldn’t expect you to actually report accurately on this saying 360 has more quality games than PS3 (which by your reasoning in the article – reviews – is actually the truth). I could only imagine your face trying to write that article… the equivalent would be watching Dracula write with a silver crucifix pen with a holy water humidifier blowing in his face.
With that said, I am really happy you are still writing here rather than on Gamedaily or some other site. The way you try to justify your opinion with anti-Microsoft titles, pictures, or comparisons is worth a laugh. Sarcastic Gamer does it better, but I guess this is just a quick fix. At least Dave balances out the inaccuracy a little bit. Keep up the op-eds.

HH – accepting you have a problem is the first positive step toward change.
Once you realise you have an anger problem, you will start your path to recovery.
