Jay-Z and Eminem join ‘DJ Hero’ ranks

May 30, 2009

Jay-Z and Eminem join 'DJ Hero' ranksDJ Hero had been rumored for months before it was finally confirmed earlier this month. Forget your fake guitars and drums, now it’s time for turntablists to get their chance to shine. And heavy-hitters in the shape of Eminem and Jay-Z are on board to provide the tunes. This one even has me excited. Which is rare.

Guitar Hero arguably revolutionized gaming a few years back when it teamed real-life music, rhythm-action gameplay, and a peripheral which must surely have had some influence on Nintendo when designing the Wii. We’ve since had many iterations of the game, and Rock Band, which took the concept and upped it a notch. And now we have DJ Hero on the way, the chance for dance music fans, MCs, and of course budding DJs to take fake real-world activity to the next level.

DJ Hero does for DJing what Guitar Hero did for rock – allowed us poor saps who aren’t in rock bands to pretend we are. No longer will you be envious of the superstar DJs playing clubs ever weekend, you’ll be able to join in, just without the stupidly high earnings and women. Activision has failed to mimic that part of music in any of its games.

DJ Hero works along the same principles as Guitar Hero, requiring players to press buttons in time to the action on the screen. The game will be released with an exclusive controller shaped like a turntable (pictured above), which has everything you need to scratch with the best of them. The on-screen action is almost identical to Guitar Hero as can be seen in the gameplay video below.

Already blessed with a dazzling set of tunes, USA Today reports that rappers Eminem and Jay-Z have now also joined the DJ Hero ranks alongside artists such as David Bowie, N.E.R.D, and 50 Cent. Both Em and Jay will serve as consultants to Activision as well as provide greatest hits compilations to a special edition version of the game.

DJ Hero is due out sometime in October for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PS2. No pricing has yet been revealed.

In all fairness, Guitar Hero didn’t revolutionise anything – the concept was already in use in Japanese arcades almost a decade earlier…

Oh man I don’t know. I love the concpt but I’m personally torn between dj hero and scratch the ultimate dj. Personally I think I prefer the controls of scratch. Numark Branded Controls and i has a more authentic look. I’ve never seen how it plays so that is what I need to know.

God I hate Eminem. I think if I ever saw him in person, I would punch him in the face.

Ya, I don’t think I’m going to be into this at all. Of course I said the same thing about GH when it first came up and I have played that to death. Time will tell I guess, just don’t see this being as popular as GH was.

  6. Ivan_PSP:

Eminem is lame now al his video look fucking gay. Jay-Z thinks he rulez this world oh please. I’m a stick with ROCAWEAR but not this crap.

    PS2 is still kicking sweet.

    I do like NERD though.

I am more excited for Scratch due to Mix Master Mike’s consultant role. Scratch appears to be more of a creative platform, while DJ Hero will be another paint-by-numbers rhythm game.

I will HAVE to get both, as I have been an amateur turntablist for over a decade, but am far more excited for MMMs game.

Mix Master cut cut cut faster
