Metal Gear for PSP Go! to be downloadable from PSN store

Metal Gear for PSP Go! to be downloadable from PSN storeRumors of a new Metal Gear Solid game have been flying all over the Web. Kojima’s teaser page didn’t help quell speculation as it shows a image of Big Boss and Raiden. However, today Sony has confirmed (indirectly) big news about the PSP Go! and the next Metal Gear Solid game.

The first MGS game on the PSP Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops was a huge hit on the PSP. The story revolved around the back story behind the man – Big Boss. It seems like Big Boss will be coming back to the handheld to continue his saga.

Sony has indirectly confirmed that a PSP Go! does exist via the June edition of the Qore magazine. Gaming Console Network was the first to notice that the June edition was available for download earlier then it should have been. I am not convinced that this was done by accident on Sony’s part considering that each episode of Qore is locked down until the exact date of the release.

While watching the Qore episode, Veronica Belmont gives us a quick overview of the PSP Go!. The new handheld device sports 16GB internally with a bigger LCD screen. The PSP Go! also does not have a UMD disc tray so it will be completely digital. The surprising tid-bid announcement in the video was that there is a new Metal Gear Solid coming to the PSP Go! which will of course mean that it will be downloadable via the PSN store.

The Sony rep in the show revealed that this is part of Sony’s dual shared service strategy where the standard PSP will continue to use physical UMD and the PSP Go! will be completely digital. This is fantastic news for those wanting a smaller and lighter all-digital PSP. It seems like we will just have to wait till E3 to find out what new games will be coming out for this nifty little device.

**Update

Gran Turismo Portable has also been confirmed via Qore.

16gb mike… 16 gb… also it hasnt been confirmed if the metal gear game is the game that is being teased by kojima…

the big news is that they showed LBP and GT on the PSP…

  2. darkwhitehair:

also no second analog stick… which means its a piece of shit…

    dont buy it

  3. Mike Ferro:

you caught me between edits. Yes, its 16GB and I also noted GT was confirmed at the end of the show.

    Thanks.

BTW – Do you own a PSP? Don’t really need one if you have played MGS Portal Ops or even the Socom games, you do get used to using the screen center button without giving it a second thought.

I also didn’t mind using the face buttons to control the camera in Call of Duty on the PSP as well. If its implemented right then its not a big deal.

  4. Mike Ferro:

*I meant you really don’t need a second analog nub (stick).

  5. lock_down:

It’s growing on me the new PSP, it looked fugly at first in the screenshot shots, but the official press pics make it look better.

GT Mobile SURELY means that GT5 is going to be at E3.

16gb though? Gonna burn through that.

  6. lock_down:

Oh and Mike, can you please post your “Blu-ray revenue up 119% while DVD is down 13% – is BD taking over?” story on Gamer please?

    Because hilarity will ensue.

  7. darkwhitehair:

no I dont own one… I know Patapon and LocoRoco are good enough reasons for me to buy a PSP…

problem is… there are a LOT of shooters on the PSP… a new socom game is coming soon… graphics can be easilly dumbed down by using cell shading and animated models but you REALLY REALLY need a second analog stick…

otherwise you have a stupid auto aim mechanic… which is stupid since it fucks up the multiplayer…

  8. Mike Ferro:

    @lock_down,

The PSP Go! looks like its about the same size as my Blackberry storm. Thats awesome, it is also suppose to be 40% lighter than the PSP 3k.

  9. Mike Ferro:

oh BTW – Bluetooth support, smells like DS3 controller support for PSP is more like it ;)

  10. Roca.:

    Zune HD aint going anywhere.

Great lunch Line-up with LBP, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear, Jack n Daxter, and more.

**I sitll like a hard copy on my collection.**

  11. Bourne:

So is this kojima’s new large announcement? the one relating to the wierd clocks and the website?

  12. Addam:

This looks pretty good… might be about time to invest in a PSP finally.

  13. darkwhitehair:

    NO NO! SECOND ANALOG STICK!

Really how hard is it? seriously? its ok if the old games dont support the 2nd analog stick… BUT NEW SHOOTERS NEED ONE!

    stupid poopie head sony…

  14. lock_down:

So apparently there is speculation that this was “accidentally” made available to download to take away some of the hype from the Zune HD…

I mean apart from MGS (which was already mentioned in Famitsu), we didn’t really learn anything did we? The Qore video didn’t really tell us anything we didn’t know or couldn’t realistically guess.

It didn’t show any footage from MGS or Gran Turismo…which is weird when you consider the importance of both franchises for the PSP.

I think there’s more intent to this than an accidental leak.

  15. darkwhitehair:

    facepalm…

yes… zune hd… which plays no games… and is in no way in competition with the PSP… yeah THATS why there were leaks…

even though destructoid posted this rumor months ago…

    jesus tapdancing christ…

  16. lock_down:

How do you know Zune HD doesn’t play games? MS have yet confirm or deny such a thing…there’s a good chance that XNA games or iPhone equivalent games will be playable on it….and we all know how pleased pubs and devs are with the success of iPhone/Touch games.

So there’s no inconceivable reason why Zune HD can’t…although admittedly its form factor looks interesting if it able to play games.

Don’t be naive, the Zune HD is a portable device that’s been getting a lot of buzz…Sony want their portable device to get all the buzz.

  17. SW:

    Gotta love speculation! :)

I speculate that Zune plays no games, and I speculate that this was a geniune leak!

Who knows, and who the fook really cares. If it was done on purpose, so what.. That kind of crap is done all the time.

Fuck, its a staple for most governments…

  18. darkwhitehair:

    uhhh

zune hd is not a speculation… neither is this… I saw the qore leak… it shows veronica belmont talking to an executive about PSP Go…

plus this was a rumor months ago…

  19. Roca.:

ALL I know is PS3 and PSP owner are going to be excited at E3,

So have there have been at least 10 new games announced/rumored for the PS3 so far.

  20. SW:

@dwh and yet your post didn’t use the word speculation!

Maybe I wasn’t referring to your post afterall!

  21. Barnabe Jones:

Kojima is going to be on my bad side if I don’t see MGS5 for PS3 in a few days…. (but we will)

BTW… No one cares about the Zune HD.Waste of time.

I think the new PSP looks awesome, but I’m still not really sure I see the need to upgrade.

  22. darkwhitehair:

no… no.. SW is wrong I am right… cus… cus Forza has more simulation.. thats why Im right…

  23. Ivan_PSP:

I can’t wait for Sony’s E3 announcements not to include all this in my list.

    I want this:

    1.No Price cut
    2.No new PSP
    3.No PS3 Slim
    4. No Wii style controller.

This PSP looks hideous i would never buy it it looks like pure garbage. Just like PS3 slim it has a bad design. Sony is known for making stylish beautiful hardware so i doubt all this PlayStation stuff.

  24. lock_down:

You don’t want a PS3 price cut? Ivan, don’t you want more people to enjoy all the exclusives that the PS3 has?

  25. Barnabe Jones:

If the PSP goes moves to download only… I might have to end up updating my custom firmware. Which I guess is part of Sony’s plan. :(

  26. Roca.:

Ivan: “This PSP looks hideous i would never buy it it looks like pure garbage.”

It still look better than PSP-3000 and the DSI.

I hope the bring Infamous to the PSP, along with Uncharted

  27. Barnabe Jones:

In case you guys haven’t heard, the ESRB has rated FF VII for the PSN. I just have to decide if I want to play it at home on the PS3 or on my PSP.

  28. Roca.:

    BArnabe

its going to look better on a smaller screen, I have the original game and sometimes i play it on my PSP through my PS3 (via Remote Play). and if you have a pair of headphones the soundtrack is going to be even better.

  29. jojo29:

Metal Gear Rising confirmed on 360…we have to wait for Sony’s Keynote…it was not introduced as a 360 exclusive so PS3ers might get it too…

  30. Barnabe Jones:

Roca, Yeah I probably will play it on PSP for that reason.

Jojo – If it was a 360 exclusive, they would have made that crystal clear. It’s coming to PS3 also.

  31. lock_down:

MGS: Peace Walker the PSP version apparently.

  32. Roca.:

Expect some BIG annoncement by Sony Today

  33. harry sachz:

    yeah, they were huge.
