The video game industry has gained an incredible amount of momentum this generation. This gen systems like the Wii have broadened the audience by bringing games that are even more mainstream accessible than before. However, to fully understand the performance of the current generation systems it never hurts to appreciate where gaming has been in the past.

The Tony Hawk series of video games began with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater in 1999 and has most recently produced Tony Hawk’s Proving Grounds. Some of the games were good, some were bad, but with nine iterations released so far, all just slightly different from the previous game, it’s time for something new. Enter Tony Hawk: Ride, complete with its skateboard controller. I kid you not.

The Wii MotionPlus peripheral is due for release on June 8, less than a month away. This little device, which attaches to the end of the Wii remote, aims to turn the currently inaccurate Wii motion controls into a 1:1 spot-on control system. Analysts think it’ll sell extremely well but will it be the boost the Wii seems to need at the moment?

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare remains as one of the best online FPS games out there. The game was spectacular when it came out with impressive cinematic cut scenes that put most movies to shame. However, the Call of Duty engine has been showing its age, which was evident in World at War.

Rumors around the new PS3 slim model have been rampant around the Web. When photos of the PS3 slim surfaced, many predicted that the PS3 slim will be revealed at E3. However, the launch of another iteration of the PS3 is really not all that surprising.

I think we can safely put to bed the idea that the video games sector is resistant to the economic ebb and flow. Maybe it’s just the strength of this current recession but console sales once again dropped by a considerable margin, both from the previous month, and the same month a year ago. The PS3 and Xbox 360 may both be cutting-edge but this month’s sales figures are positively dire.

Alan Wake is another Microsoft Xbox 360 exclusive title that has been in the works for a long time. Very little information has been released about the game. The game has been speculated to have become vaporware a few times, but new information regarding Alan Wake has managed to trickle out potentially signaling a delay.

We all knew the day would come when, sick of playing second (and third) fiddle to the Nintendo, Wii, the Xbox 360 (and PS3) would be given motion-sensing devices of their own. Along with rumors of Sony being due to unveil its effort at the forthcoming E3, there is now evidence to suggest Microsoft will do likewise. And the concept looks ambitious.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction has had a long history much like Too Human. The game has been in development for quite some time with very little shown. However, according to rumors, the game is finally set to release during Christmas 2009.

There is increasing evidence that Apple could be about to venture into another new territory, that of games console manufacturing. With three current-gen home consoles seemingly appealing to every type of gamer, could there be a place for Apple at this party?
