E3 2009: Microsoft impressions – attacks the Wii and Alan Wake secret shown on Xbox 360

June 2, 2009

Microsoft E3 impressions - attacks the Wii and Alan Wake secret shown on Xbox 360Microsoft had its press conference today at E3 and it was extremely interesting. There were things in the conference out of left field and some that were expected. The overall presentation of Microsoft’s press conference clearly shows the company’s new shift and focus towards the casual market.

I definitely enjoyed Microsoft’s conference today as it was full of new and interesting concepts. However, I couldn’t help shake the feeling that I might be watching Nintendo’s press conference rather than Microsoft’s.

The conference started with Microsoft employees up on stage dancing and playing on The Beatles Rockband play set. Tony Hawk then stepped on the stage to show off the new skateboard device. Microsoft then demonstrated its new motion camera technology by having a Microsoft employee jumping around and flailing her arms and legs kicking imaginary things.

Paradigm Shift towards the Casual:

image There is a clear shift in Microsoft’s focus this year and that is abundantly made clear by the company’s E3 press conference. The Natal project is one of the most intriguing things I have seen in recent memory. The camera technology is not what was impressive but its application. Sony has talked about using the Sixaxis motion controls to navigate through the XMB, but Microsoft has taken it one step further by combining motion detection through the camera with the NXE.

Some of the games like Ricochet were a bit hokey, and the Microsoft employee even takes a jab at the Nintendo Wii when he says, “this isn’t some kind of game where you sit on the sofa where you use some preset waggle commands.”

The project Peter Molyneux is working on called Milo is very interesting. We have seen similar techniques from the Playstation Eye with EyePets where a user can draw something and the virtual pet will redraw the object and pull it out into the virtual world.

However, the application Molyneux is using the motion cam was a nice touch. Users can carry on a conversation with a boy and interact with him. There are definitely some obstacles in making it work properly but if Molyneux can pull it off it will be interesting because he definitely isn’t the type to exaggerate.

There was also a confirmation that Sky TV will be hooking up with Xbox 360. I am sure this will be big news for those overseas. Xbox 360 movies can now be streamed instantly at 1080p, which is fantastic news. However, I am a bit skeptical as to if it is actual 1080p and not pseudo-Hulu style semantics on the resolution. This is one of the features I can’t wait to see in action as even the best streaming player via Hulu has difficulty maintaining a 480p resolution, which technically really isn’t 480p by the way (its Web 480p).

Lets talk about the hardcore games:

Wake why must you disappoint?

For me, the best part of the conference was when Microsoft unveiled gameplay from Alan Wake for the first time. The game is exactly the way I imagined it. The game is very a la Silent Hill back to its roots. Wake’s fantasy world is manifesting itself into reality only at night and his best weapon is the flashlight. The gameplay shows that you will rely heavily on using the flashlight to weaken the enemies and take them out.

The only thing disappointing about Alan Wake is that it will not be out this year but in spring of 2010. As to why we have to wait another whole year is beyond me, but I am sure it will be worth it.

Forza 3 races quickly to 2009 at 720p and 60fps

The other surprising news was that Forza 3 will be coming out near the end of this year. Do I smell a Gran Turismo vs Forza battle by years end? This will be interesting if the two biggest race franchise in the industry cross paths around the same time.

Splinter Cell: Conviction shows some conviction this time around

Conviction looks ten times better than the 2007 trailer that was shown. I am actually glad that Ubisoft decided to delay the game as the changes made are great. Fisher no longer looks like a homeless bum, but looks like his former self. The game looks completely overhauled as if someone at Ubisoft looked at the 2007 trailer and said “this game looks like crap, lets work on it more for two more years.” The new trailer and gameplay has my interest renewed in the franchise once again.

Halo and more Halo

Halo Reach was revealed as a brand new entry into the Halo Universe. Gamers who buy ODST will get into the Halo Reach beta. With the Halo Universe/MMO and Peter Jackson’s Halo Chronicles in the works, there won’t be a Halo shortage for the next five years.

Metal Gear and Left4Dead Returns

Its been a while since a Metal Gear game has graced the Xbox. Metal Gear Solid 2 was the last game to be on an Xbox back five years ago. Two iterations later – Metal Gear: Rising finds itself on the Xbox 360. The game centers around Raiden who is the main character this time around. I have a strong suspicion that this game was quietly being developed while Kojima was creating MGS4. Remember the picture of the Xbox 360 debug unit at Kojima studios several years ago?

If anything, what really surprised me at Microsoft’s E3 was the announcement that a sequel for Left 4 Dead would be releasing at the end of this year. L4D just came out six months ago, how can Valve release a sequel already when I am still feverishly playing the first one? I am not sure if I will be dumping $60 for a bunch of new maps, unless there is something revolutionary in the sequel.

Overall, Microsoft’s E3 was pleasantly good. I think Sony has a tough act to follow and can’t wait to see what they have in store. E3 is starting to look like Christmas for me, as I am thinking about playing all of these games.

That first picture makes me lol…it reminds me of The Office where Brent is introducing the Swindon lot when he starts doing his impersonation of Eric Hitchmo…

    Genius…

    youtube.com/watch?v=kq_hoPAewIM

  2. Bourne:

Alan wake does look interesting. For my project Natal wouldn’t interest me as a 360 owner but milo looks weird.

I hope Sony don’t go down the casual route. We need some hard hitting hardcore games!

  3. SW:

‘how can Valve release a sequel already when I am still feverishly playing the first one?’

Thats just how valve work. Milky milky.

  4. harry sachz:

Well EA do it with their yearly iterations of sports games.

  5. JofaMang:

Yeah, and EA are moneygrubbing douchebags too. Whats your point?

  6. Happyhockum:

    Mike Ferro

“and the Microsoft employee even takes a jab at the Nintendo Wii when he says, “this isn’t some kind of game where you sit on the sofa where you use some preset waggle commands.”

That was actually Steven Spielburg Mike……or did you just think it was the token west coast hippy making an appearance for chuckles & giggles?

  7. Spideydog:

You don’t think these aren’t scripted HH ??

  8. Happyhockum:

I’m sure they are scripted and rehearsed and…..so what of it?

What’s that got to do with Mike forgetting/not recognising/ignoring the fact that it was SS who said that (and that he did some of the presentation)?

Are you saying SS is a Microsoft employee?

Do you know the contract/employment terms under which he appeared last night?

I doubt it & besides a silly quibble….just what are you trying to say?

  9. Happyhockum:

It looks like nobody has raised this little gem either…..

From August, XBL will enable us to buy and download full Xbox 360 titles with real money (not Xbox 360 points).

30 games to start with and new titles to be added weekly that will coincide with retail release.

Unlike XBL arcade and WiiWare, these will be “disc-sized” games, not smaller games designed specifically for download.

  10. phranctoast:

Thats great news HH, until you factor in the rediculous cost MS charges you for a HDD.

  11. lock_down:

Nice to see MS catching up, we’ve been able to buy full PS3 games from the PSN Store since 2007.

But yeah, people with 20gb hard drive are gonna be pretty fucked…remember digital is the future and all that…no need for optical media.

  12. Barnabe Jones:

“All you need is love” is an exclusive to be used as leverage in the console war. Gotta love irony.

The Forza guy kept saying “the definitive racing game of 2009″. He serously said that phrase about 20 times. I’m betting GT5 vs Forza this year also.

Alan Wake – looked ok, but not amazing.

Splinter Cell – actually looked amazing.

Natal – nicely done, but I’m not convinced it’s going to revolutionize gaming like they were trying to sell it.

Halo & yes, more Halo – yawn.

HAPPY- You are wrong. The jab at the Wii was from the Natal guy. Not Spielberg. Re watch it.

  13. Barnabe Jones:

Happy – here you go. It WAS the Natal guy.

  14. Happyhockum:

    phranctoast

The answer to that is to do what I did.
Find a deal on a new Elite
(I paid £10 more than an arcade version for mine).

    Barnabe Jones

I think you’ll find Spielberg (also?) said the bit about preset waggles.

  15. Spideydog:

No HH, the script is written by MS for SS to read off the teleprompter isn’t it ?? So the question is: Is it the opinion of SS or MS or both ??

  16. Spideydog:

But it turned out to be the Natal guy anyways … lol

  17. Happyhockum:

I had a look and it would seem it was a MS guy said that bit, apologies Mike.

    Spideydog

I think SS has established pretty well by now that he is about as independent as they come.
If he doesn’t want to be involved or say/do something he won’t.
    Why would he?
It’s not like they could pay him off and/or offer him money when he has more than he could ever spend.

  18. Roca.:

Elite is not really the answer, 120GB is not enough. at least PS3 with the PS3 you have the option to upgrade your HDD, I got a 500GB on my PS3. you can also add a external HDD to the PS3.

There are games that uses memory/space

    MSG4 = 50GB
    RPGs = 10GB and up
    HD movies up to 6GB

  19. Happyhockum:

S’funny they didn’t mention the BBC tie in to XBL.

    h**p://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/bbcworldwide
    /worldwidestories/pressreleases/2009/05_may/xbox_zune.shtml

    Roca
120gb will do for now, I hope for and expect a bigger HDD option at some point soon
(it’s been rumoured for a few months & 2.5″ 500gb drives are possible).
I also expect the appearance of a bigger HDD to see an adjustment to Xbox HDD pricing
(just like happened last time with the 20gb unit when the 60gb & 120gb units came out as options to buy seperately)

Even 60gb is enough if you manage your downloading properly.

You can also save to an external HDD through the USB connections and store there (but you have to add back to the Xbox HDD to use your stuff when you do that).
    Awkward, ok, yes I agree.
But hardly impossible or too demanding.

The more stuff comes out on XBL the more likely a bigger drive is
(and possibly a ‘normal’ use of an external 3.5″ HDD).

    We’ll see soon enough.

  20. Roca.:

Happyhockum do you own a PS3?

  21. lock_down:

    What do you think? :P

  22. Roca.:

yeah i just ask because 360 fanboy usually are ppl who doesnt own a PS3, and thats why they are 360 fanboys because because you have to actually expirience what the PS3 offers in order to understand why the PS3 is the better console. MOST PS3 owner have had a 360 before. and when comparing the two the 360 is a total let down

The 360 is to the PS3 what the Wii is to the 360, let put it that way.( in term of Technology)

  23. Barnabe Jones:

    Last second Nintendo predictions!

    *Sales data
    *Waggle
    *Wii motion plus
*Over all piss poor show, but Mario or Zelda will be mentioned and everyone will be happy regardless.

  24. Mike Ferro:

    No prob. Happy.

    @Roca,

Actually your statement is very interesting as you are actually correct.. I find that many of my friends who own a PS3 started out with a 360.

I guess it makes sense, if your a hardcore game junkie like me you will buy everything as long as it has good games on it.

If Apple comes out with a Video console you can bet I will be the first one to buy it.

  25. Arvis:

    Happy,

That bit about downloading full games with actual dollars over XBL is actually pretty awesome. Any chance they’ll cut back on the price of HDDs?

Overall, I’ve been really impressed with Microsoft’s initiative this year at E3. They got the basics down with more great franchises and firm release windows for established ones (Metal Gear, Harry’s big list of sweet-looking titles), the uber-cool hardcore features (download whole games, more movie/TV features), and a cool new gadget that is truly unique (full body motion sensing).

I grudgingly give Microsoft high marks this year. I’m impressed. :D

    -Arvis

  26. Arvis:

“on a personal note: MS has easily won this year’s e3.”

Are you sure, kev? Nintendo’s might blow you AWAY! ;)

  27. kev:

    arvis – naw….ninty’s got nothing left. maybe a price drop but that’s about it…. i HOPE i’m wrong…

  28. Barnabe Jones:

So Nintendo’s big holiday Mario game is a rehash of the DS New Super Mario brother, huh? Only Nintendo! That’s about 20 steps backwards from Mario Galaxy.

  29. CAD:

I’ve personally experienced and have friends and relatives that have both and all of them prefer the 360 over the PS3. You can add to that the countless times I’ve read comments on websites where duel owners prefer their 360 over their PS3. I’ve tried the PS3 a few time and it does not excite me. Going to a system with less features is like I’m playing with a last gen system and why would I want a console that comes close to the 360 when I can have a 360 at a cheaper price. The PS3 for me just makes no sense. Hopefully they will show me something today that may change my view but I’m not betting on it.

  30. Barnabe Jones:

Oh how they’ve fallen! Galaxy was a great game, but didn’t sell as well as Wii fit or Mario Kart.

Nintendo’s answer, “hey that DS mario game sold well. Let’s just re-release that for the Wii”

  31. Roca.:

Kev get a live u are all late here. and nobody wants to read all that crap about M$ conference..the only big news was Metal Gear Rising to the 360 (big deal it is also coming to the PS4)

after that is was all HAlo more more sequels. BORING

Downloading full for the 360? I have been Doing that on my ps3 since 2007….BURN!!

Movies/TV shows and all that Crap – PS3 onwers can watch anymovies they want with the web broswer (via hulu)

Motion camara – PS3 said “already got that” , then the PS2 comes out the cut and said “wait I had it too”

no big news for M$ so shut up and enjoy playing Halo the rest of ur life because thats all you going to get.

  32. Barnabe Jones:

I just… I just can’t watch it anymore. I throw in the towel. The NES was my first console. I hate watching my childhood heroes go to shit like this.

  33. Roca.:

    CAD

you make nosense…tell what those feature are?

the PS3 is the better cosole.

let me give you an examaple:

I was playing Left 4 Dead for PC on my PS3, All you need is a spesific software on ur PC and BOON you can play all pc games on the PS3.

what can x360 do? oh yeah it can RRoD 60% of the tiime.

  34. Arvis:

    Kev,

I was kidding. Nintendo is not even a shadow of their former selves. They will never win back their old fans, the ones that got them here in the first place. They are forever gone.

    -Arvis

  35. SW:

‘..on a personal note: MS has easily won this year’s e3.’

When the others have not even shown yet? (well ninty is in progress).

  36. Roca.:

he was just dreaming, but let him keep dreaming it doesnt cost anything to dream

  37. kev:

SW – you’re right…just had to throw a little fuel to see who was holding a match.

Arvis – i’m afraid you could be right. sucks..no doubt…

  38. SW:

    Well, I’m not saying it(MS) won’t be.

Nintendo has lost all but my ‘hope’ for something better, and Sony, who really knows how that one is going to turn on. They have alot of expectation (not hype, but the expectation that they had BETTER hit it out of the park) so I figure alot of people will probably be let down by whatever they do unless its like ‘megaton, megaton, sales, megaton’.

I’m just saying, hey, let the others show and then proclaim it was the best ;)

  39. SW:

^^^ was directed at Roca. You replied while just before me Kev.

  40. Arvis:

“just had to throw a little fuel to see who was holding a match.”

Ha ha! Love that patented, Kev-brand honesty. It’s what makes arguing with you so much more fun than others.

Before this gets too friendly, I still would have liked to see M$ show some new IPs. Everything felt slightly “me too”-ish.

    Roca

Your swerve on the HDD point is noted, btw that’s pretty funny coming someone who on the one hand wants to imply I know nothing about PS3 yet you clearly know nothing about Xbox & how it works with HDDs.

I have 2 friends and 2 family members with PS3s.
    And what?

There’s no difference except a handful of decent 1st party games and a built-in Blu-ray drive 2 of them don’t even use for movies, ever (and they don’t use it on a big flat panel TV either).

You are amusing though, watching you drop the usual PS3 fanboy claim (that the ‘PS3 is not just for games, it’s a media centre’) just got blown totally out of the water by a complete redefinition of what that means and how it’ll work and your new found love for games only.

Go on admit it, you are one of Ivan’s sockies.

    Arvis

I would expect them to do what they did when the 60gb & 120gb HDDs appeared (the 20gb price fell a lot).
IIRC it’s all about how the wider market is working and I’d be surprised if that wider market really wants or needs to continue with the 60gb unit.

The PS3 uses a 2.5″ HDD too but has a size limitation which means you can’t use a 400gb or 500gb 2.5″ drive.

As that isn’t a concern for Xbox I expect the next HDD to leap-frog the new 160gb PS3 SKU, hopefully by going the whole hog to 500gb.

Tbh I’m more concerned with the unit actually appearing than what it costs, I know it’ll sell at a premium and maybe 100% more than a regular unit but I am not really bothered by that, although a sensible price would be welcome.

  42. Arvis:

Well, the Nintendo conference is out and out rubbish so far. Exactly the kind of utter CRAP I have come to expect.

The Wii Vitality Sensor? *facepalm x 10000*

    who’s the retard?

I wasnt even talking about the PS3 being a Media Center, but thanks to bring that up. The PS3 evolves with each passing day, the only thing that evolves on the 360 its the RRoD.

We can go head to head on which console has more feature and I bet you PS3 has more.

“The PS3 uses a 2.5″ HDD too but has a size limitation which means you can’t use a 400gb or 500gb 2.5″ drive.”

oh please, tell me ur not serious!! you can find a 1TB 2.5″ Sata HDD anywhere.

“There’s no difference except a handful of decent 1st party games and a built-in Blu-ray drive”

what about the 360, A less-than impressive 1st party lineup with no HD player. RRoD to the Fullest and they also charge you for every little things.

  44. Barnabe Jones:

OK.. I take it back… they managed to pull it out.

*New third person Metroid – by team ninja
    *Mario Galaxy 2
    *Final Fantasy

Mostly everything else was “blah blah blah casual audience”.

Not too bad in the end. They managed to show about half causal and half decent games. Better than last years show.

    I would give them a C+

  45. Barnabe Jones:

    Hmmm maybe a C?

  46. Roca.:

Final Fantasy is killing its name with the DS/Wii crap

Go ahead then, name the 7 seperate evolutionary moves the PS3 made in the last 7 days….in fact please us all and name the last 14 evolutionary moves over the last 14 days.

    Ridiculously laughable hyperbole, nuch?

    Roca.:

“We can go head to head on which console has more feature and I bet you PS3 has more.”

You mean you want to pretend that a Blu-ray drive is a big deal (when it means nothing but a waste of money to me) and built-in wi-fi means the world to everyone.
Sorry but I have news for you.

    1) Xbox already has stacks of quality games, just because this years release schedule is, according to you, slim means nothing to me.
    2) I don’t want an HD player built-in.
    I bought a much higher quality stand-alone.
    3) Both my Falcon Xboxes have never missed a beat.

1-Multiplatform quality games are also on the PS3, First party quality games SONY WINS as there are more.
2-Blu-ray players is not just for movies. all PS3 games are on a bluray disc (1 Bluray disc = 7 360 disc (DVD-9)
3- My Falcon Box Red-Ring to death about a month ago.
4 – I care even less as im not the one paying for it. $50 for XBL, I rather buy 5 PSN games which are way better that XBL games.

Sorry Happy. That may be the case for some but not all of the HDD’s. I’m aware of people I know “in real life” that have upgraded to that size.

It is humorous that those HDD’s are still cheaper than the 360’s 120GB ;)

  52. CAD:

Truth is with all this stuff coming we will need a bigger hard drive. 120 will not cut it. But the flip side to that is that MS at least keeps a record of all purchases and therefore you can redownload anything previously bought at any time you wnat. No download caps over here.

  53. Happyhockum:

    Roca

I’m sure you find all that absolutely incredibly relevant and interesting.
You obviously know nothing about how games are compressed on the Xbox.
    1 x 25gb Blu-ray disc does not = 5 x 8.5gb DVD9s.
It is nothing like as implistic as you make out. but no surprises there.

    phranctoast

    Thanks for the info.

    CAD

I agree. I look forward to the next leap (last time they went from just 20gb to 60gb & 120gb, it would be very cool if they jump to 3 x and 6 x the avalable sizes next time! ;)

  54. SW:

I’ve been able to download everything I’ve ever purchased from PSN, ever.

Even if I’ve not been able to find it on the store (which doesn’t mean its not there, just I cannot find it…) I’ve just queued it from my past list of dl’s (which spans back to my first) and I can get it again.

M$ is way behind on that comparte to Sony.
You Can All ur PSN games to as many PS3 as you want, but you can only have 5 “Active” PS3 at the same time. “inactive” system won play your PSN games (but u can Active/inactive them anytime you want). all there is no limit as how many times you can download ur PSN games.

  64. CarlB:

Coming this year. No I am not making it up.

  65. CarlB:

Motion sensor now. A wand that interacts with the eyetoy

  66. Roca.:

oh please yes u are making it up.
because it aint coming this year. dont play like this. lol

  67. CarlB:

Whatever. The demo they set up is pretty lame compared to natal. Looks like they set it up at the last minute.

  68. CarlB:

FFIV is the bombshell for Sony. It’s downhill from here.

  69. Roca.:

    I HATE MOTION SENSOR games.

  70. Roca.:

    Resident Evil PSP announced

  71. CarlB:

Yes, MGS FFVII LittleBIGPlanet Motorstorm Arctic Edge, Dissidia, SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3, Monster Hunter, Soul Calibur, SMT Persona, Warriors Orocho 2, echocrono to PSPGo as well. Do not like the position of the analog nub in the awkward low middle position.

  72. Roca.:

    Jack Tretton Announces Rockstar’s Agent

In the game players will venture about the world getting involved in conspiracies and secret agent dealings.

Anyway, other than the fact that the game is being mirrored for mainstream recognition (not and is set to strike a chord in the world of gaming in the same way that Grand Theft Auto 3 did for the PlayStation 2 is definitely a promising sign.

  73. CarlB:

MGS Peacewalker. All that was towards the beginning of the show.

  74. Roca.:

    I dont see any PS3 Hater… lol

    Kev:
“Producer Dan Greenawalt promised over 400 cars from 50 manufacturers,”

as the just announce “The PSP GT will feature 800 cars and 35 tracks.”

The PSP version is pissing all over FORZA 3

  75. CarlB:

The motion sensing demo was a disaster. They are going back to… LBP with racing and Disney content… oh boy.

  76. Roca.:

Carlb nice job on keeping us updated

  77. CarlB:

ModNation Racers on PSN… are they seriously trying to finish the show with this stuff?

  78. Roca.:

    ModNation Racers

    WTF is that?

  79. CarlB:

Okay, this is better… The Last Guardian (trico game) vid.

  80. CarlB:

wha? Decent graphics and all… but a monster puppy dog chicken? Epic Fail

  81. Roca.:

    When is it coming out.

Damn Final Fantasy 14 is really coming out next year.

Also, Metal Gear might be going to the 360 but not Solid Snake, He is staying with Sony as there going to be 4 Snakes on the PSP game.

  82. Roca.:

wha? Decent graphics and all… but a monster puppy dog chicken? Epic Fail

sorry to say this carl but ur late on this one. Everybody go to see the trailer a coupe weeks ago and they all loved it.

  83. CarlB:

Don’t know. GT5 with damage looks cool. GoW live demo coming up.

  84. SW:

@Carl ‘but a monster puppy dog chicken? Epic Fail’

You didn’t like it? Thats a shame. I thought it was a nice looking creature that will ‘attempt’ to create an emotional connection between you and it. I think it will be mostly successful (I already felt bad the fluffy thing when I noticed its body covered in arrows in the trailer :( )

Its funny that you say the motion controller was lame when I’ve read from other sites that the accuracy was pretty amazing for a pointer (down the millimetre), again tho, its as useless to me as natal (altho anything that makes fps on consoles more playable ill accept). To be fair to both pieces of tech, we need to get them time to me tweaked and see what the developers do with them (I do see more possibilities for casual/dance/sports type games for natal).

  85. SW:

@Carl – I’m going to retract my previous statement, until I can see this new ‘tweaked’ featherless animal (the tweak better be part of the story *shakes fist*!!!!!!!)

  86. CarlB:

GowIII harpy riding… centaur and chimera fight scenes are awesome.

  87. Arvis:

I don’t know about you guys, but the Sony conference is freaking amazing so far. Who saw Final Fantasy XIV coming?

    -Arvis

  88. darkwhitehair:

Final Fantasy 14 is an MMO arvis… like FF 11

  89. Ivan_PSP:

M.A.G. is coming this fall and FFXIV next year for PS3 only and it will be an online game maybe like FFXI and a new IP from Rockstar games exclusive to PS3 call AGENT. The motion thing for PS3 looks really cool i can’t wait to buy that controller looks awesome launching spring of 2010. And Gran Turismo 35 tracks with 60 track variations layout and 800 cars coming out October 1, 2009, the game will run a 60Frames/ second PSP Go will cost $250 but useless if you have a PSP already. Hideo Kojima announced Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Plus they will be 100 New PS2 Titles In 2009 and 35 PS3 exclusives. Every PSP game will start to be available from the PlayStation Store and UMD. Team Ico’s new game is call “The Last Guardian”, and Gran Turismo 5 were showing at E3 God of War III will be release in March 2010. Sony’s E3 conference was fucking awesome. I didn’t paraphrase the whole show only some stuff. No Metal Gear Solid: Rising announce damn it i don’t care we got Solid Snake way better then Raiden boring ass. Sony won hell yes.

  90. Barnabe Jones:

I was like “no you mean 13 Vs”…. But no! Holy Shit!

  91. CarlB:

Sony “One Vision” spot is definitely an improvement over their past oil baby commercials…

  92. Barnabe Jones:

I serously can’t believe it’s being released next year.

  93. Barnabe Jones:

I love the old school “PlayStation” robot voice. They never should have gotten rid of that.

  94. CarlB:

Roca, MGSR has already been confirmed for PS3.

  95. Happyhockum:

    Roca

    Spamming fanboy.

  96. Happyhockum:

    Ivan

Doing his best to put up a decent fanboy front.

  97. CarlB:

FFXIV is officially Sony’s highlight of the show. The eye wand could be cool, the demo just wasn’t up to snuff. Thankfully they ended the show with their strong hand, GoW III live demo.

  98. lock_down:

    NASCAR is GT5…thank you Kaz!!

  99. Ivan_PSP:

Final Fantasy XIII will be exclusive in Japan.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be exclusive to PS3 worldwide.

Final Fantasy XIV will be exclusive to PS3 worldwide.

  100. Barnabe Jones:

Yeah the wand showed potential though. It’s obviously in it’s early stages. If they use it to create hardcore games like they are claiming… it looks pretty cool.

*FFXIV – was the holy shit moment for me.
*The rockstar game was nice to hear about
*The Last Guardian – breathtakingly beautiful
    *FF VII TODAY!
*Lots of really good PSP games coming
    *GOW looks awesome

-A little disappointed there was no mention of white knight, Heavy Rain, or GT5. But still an awesome show.

  101. Bourne:

Omg i’m so excited for GT5 graphics, gameplay looks unbelieveable. And we finally have damage!

This is the true/best driving sim. Finally it can take its place on the throne.

  102. lock_down:

Who gives a fuck about Final Fantasy…GT5 has damage, NASCAR and WRC.

Kaz, you genius. Defo getting GT PSP.

GT5 will probably be shown at Tokyo Game Show in Sony’s back yard.

  103. Bourne:

Barnabee there was mention of GT5, they showed some in-game footage of it.

  104. Barnabe Jones:

lol Lost Planet 2 confirmed also. And Uncharted looked amazing!

Ivan, I’ll see you in the beta tomorrow.

  105. SW:

I’m giving the show to MS if only because of Natal.

I’m not very impressed with it in terms of how its going to affect MY gaming tastes, BUT, it could very well be the next step in motion controlled games and could position the next xbox to hurt the next wii (because its too late for ms this gen). And at the same time it was neat to see it in action.

I’d say that if you stripped out Natal, we’d be pretty much on an even footing with MS getting MGS and sony getting an exclusive FF mmo. At least sony is doing one thing right, and that is keeping the best iron grip it can (given the wii dominance) on Japan.

Also, did I read $250 for the PSP go? Ouch.

  106. Ivan_PSP:

The beta for UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves is starting at midnight June 3, 2009. I will definitely be playing that tonight. I forgot to say that Gran Turismo 5 would introduce NASCAR to be playable which is freaking sweet. I was disappointed that they Sony didn’t show more release date and videos for Heavy Rain, AGENT and The Agency and Gran Turismo 5. I know they all coming out this year and next year anytime. I’m looking forward to buy all those games but Final Fantasy XIV Online OMG i love online games so much i’m so happy with owning a PS3.

  107. lock_down:

    March 2010 for GOW3…I’m predicting 2009 GT5 release then.

  108. Barnabe Jones:

@ Bourne- Yeah, but it was just a teaser. Don’t get me wrong… I’m happy to see it. I just wanted to see more of it.

  109. Barnabe Jones:

@lock_Down – I don’t know… they would want to start building hype ASAP. Epically with Forza being released around that time.

  110. CAD:

    @CAD.
donload caps are only for different machine. you can dl your stuff unlimited to the same ps3, but only up to 5 times on different ones.

    Phranctoast

Thanks for clearing that up as I have no Idea what Roca was rambling on about.

Well we can bring our games to any machine at any time via Memory Card or by simply loging onto that console and then downloading it again. And yes we have a download history where you can find all your property even if it’s not on the store anymore. The only limit is that when I bring my gamer tag back to my 360 then the person will not be able to play it. Maybe the Demo but that’s about it. Also we too can play any downloaded game on any profile Live or Not that is on that console.

  111. Ivan_PSP:

The Sony press conference for E3 2009 is set to prepare gamers for the return of a juggernaut. Sony’s had a tough year for its PS3 console, but things are looking up. This is Sony’s year to make the most expensive console on the market profitable. With God of War III, Heavy Rain, Batman Arkham Asylum, Modern Warfare 2 and MAG on the horizon, this year’s E3 press conference promises to give gamers a reason to pick up a PS3. I’ll be blogging live as Sony wows gamers with 364 new PS3, PSP and PS2 titles. Check out the running commentary after the break.

2:11 EST – The Sony intro has One Vision of Queen which has me excited already. After looking at Wii games, the PS3 graphics are fantastic.

2:18 EST – PS2 has 100 new games headed its way in 2009.

2:19 EST – Playing inFamous nonstop since last week? Guilty as charged, except when Shawn gets it first.

2:20 EST – Uncharted 2: Among Thieves multiplayer starts tonight at midnight. It’s intense action multiplayer in the most gorgeous game I’ve seen on a console.

2:26 EST – MAG is unveiled for the first time with 256 man multiplayer running on the game floor.

2:34 EST – PSP getting makeover for younger audience with a Hannah Montana bundle. Rock Band is also in the works.

2:35 EST – PSP is going pocket sized with the PSP Go. It still has integrated WiFi and plays all PSP games on disc or downloaded from the PSn network. It does not replace the PSP 3000 or the UMD which will continue to be supported.

2:40 EST – New application for the PSP is Sense Me which matches your music to your mood. Sony is also lowering the tool kit price which means more, less expensive PSP games on UMD and digital distribution.

2:41 EST – PSP Go launches October 1st in NA and Europe and November 1st in Japan.

2:42 EST – Video service will be native to the PSP. Showtime, Starz TV, T.N.A. and tons of anime launch today.

2:44 EST – The full Gran Turismo game will run on the PSP Go at 60 FPS. It includes legacy cars and the works. PSP exclusive features include 4 player multiplayer and the ability to trade cars with your friends.

2:45 EST – Surprise! Hideo Kojima makes an appearance to announce Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP. It takes place in 1974, ten years after Metal Gear Solid 3, so it’s a true sequel. Peace Walker will use all the PSPs capabilities.

2:47 EST – Fantastic trailer I’ll have to get up soon. Solid Snake becomes the world’s next deterrent for peace. You’ll love the box at the end. It’s an inside joke.

2:58 EST – Resident Evil coming to PSP with an original game. Little Big Planet, Hannah Montana, Harry Potter, Persona and many more are on the way.

3:05 EST – Final Fantasy VII is available PSN as of today!

3:11 EST – The sheer number of games both exclusive and cross platform is mind numbing. Brutal Legend, Ghostbusters, Dragon Age, and Singstar Queen for the PS3 are just a few I’m looking forward to. There are quite a few kid friendly games mingles with God of War, and Modern Warfare.

3:15 EST – Rockstar bringing Agent to the PS3. The shadowy world of the super spy is coming at you.

3:18 EST – Assassins Creed 2 Renaissance Italy and Florentine noble Enzio take flight with DaVinci’s flying machine gliding through Italy to reach new heights. New assassination techniques are smooth as silk with the double blades and distractions like smoke bombs. New A.I. archetype Seeker. 30 weapons in your arsenal.

3:22 EST – Final Fantasy XIII this spring combines man, machine and magic in an adventure that has a distinctively Sci-fi touch. Familiar summons are back including Shiva. It’s as beautiful as FFXII but feels more traditional.

3:26 EST – Final Fantasy XIV is coming in 2010 exclusively for the PS3 as a new online adventure.

3:28 EST – Motion control gaming gets a boost with the Playstation motion controller. Live technology demo of the motion controller engineering prototype working with the PlayStation Eye. One to one movement that brings virtual peripherals into the game itself. Use flashlights, rackets, swords, and golf clubs. First person mode allows guns, and whips. You’ll be able to draw, write, and spray paint.

Character control is demoed in an arena type melee battle with Sword and shield style gladiator combat. The most impressive demo is the one for archery using full body motion. I can imagine an MMO using this. People could get a good work out.

3:40 EST – The Playstation motion controller launches Spring 2010.

3:42 EST – William Ho introduces ModNation Racers. Think LittleBigPlanet with race cars only the track environments are much more realistic looking. Design your terrain, track, obstacles and weapons. You can manipulate lighting and it looks like weather as well.

3:50 EST – Following Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian is on the way. The main character is a boy with his very own luck dragon that looks like a four legged bald eagle with a hyena head. Very bizarre.

3:56 EST – Gran Turismo 5 gives you racing anyway you want it; on the track, in the dirt, through city streets and cross country.

3:59 EST – Concluding with a live demo of God of War 3.

    * Not as visually stunning as Uncharted but intensely violent on a mythically massive scale.
    * Harpies with middle aged boobs. Hope they censor that.
    * Hey when did Kratos sprout wings?
    * Awesome Chimera design. However the Titan looks great but didn’t do much in the demo.

Still GoW3 seems to be everything you want from a series finale.

The Big Wrap up… no price break too bad but all in all an incredible showing by Sony. The motion control demonstration was the highlight.

  112. lock_down:

Barnabe, yeah but Tokyo Game Show is in September…Forza 3 releases in October…and it’s better for Sony to show it in their back yard, with if they release a coupla months later it’ll defo take a large amount of gloss off Forza..no doubt about that.

NASCAR in GT5…I can’t get over it. Fucking genius.

  113. SW:

Doesn’t everyone is nascar just lock thier stereing wheels at like 5 degrees to the left and drive round a circle for like 2 hours all while the occasional car ploughs into another ;)

    Muahaha

  114. lock_down:

Cars ploughing into each other and crashing is the main why you watch motorsport SW :P

  115. Ivan_PSP:

Tomorrow I’m going to pre-order Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time, UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves, M.A.G., MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, Gran Turismo and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 my first non SCEA game. I will also be buying Heavy Rain, The Agency, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Final Fantasy XIV and The Last Guardian. I got over $2000 i can spend for video games.

Gran Turismo 5 is gonna make history again for being the greatest racing game ever made.

  116. Barnabe Jones:

I Hope we do see GT5 in 2009 or early next year.

In the mean time the Forza guy can keep telling himself that “Forza is the definitive racing game”…. Sure Forza guy. Sure.

  117. SW:

    @Lock_down

    Too true ;)

Monster trucks are fun for that…

  118. CON:

“I got over $2000 i can spend for video games.”

    L O fucking L

  119. harry sachz:

    @ Jofa

“Yeah, and EA are moneygrubbing douchebags too. Whats your point?” –> MLB ‘08 The Show, MLB ‘09 The Show……. are you saying that Sony are moneygrubbing douchebags also? Because they’re doing the exact same thing that EA are doing. Didn’t think that one out very well, did you?

Why are people still responding to roca?

  120. Barnabe Jones:

SW, The griffin thing in The Last Guardian still has feathers. I think the main character was redone in the new trailer, but for the most part it’s pretty much the same. They also added on a few extra seconds. Looks really good & the music definitely invokes an emotional response… I can see the story’s tragic end coming from a mile away though.

  121. harry sachz:

Kinda like that ‘Marley and Me’ movie, eh barnabe? We all knew the dog was going to die.

That game does look interesting, co-operative platforming looks like fun.

  122. Barnabe Jones:

    Wait the dog dies?….

  123. CarlB:

Well, looks like FFXIV isn’t exclusive, as it is coming to PC as well, and as practically all PS3 owners here have stated, that means it is not exclusive and they would rather play games on PC if they had a choice…

  124. Barnabe Jones:

Carl, Yeah it’s coming to the PC as well… but the PC doesn’t count as a platform (sorry SW). Microsoft does the same thing with there “exclusives”. Who would rather play it on the PC?

I’m excited for Square’s conference tomorrow. They said they had three new IPs. We’ve only seen two so far (Wii’s FF & FFXIV).

Also Konomi’s should be pretty good. Castelvaina & the slight possibility of seeing more of MGS.

  125. CarlB:

Yes Barnabe, the difference is when those “exclusives” were mentioned in the past here several times they didn’t count because they were on PC as well. Now, magically, all of a sudden they do. Lol.

  126. CarlB:

“PC doesn’t count as a platform” when talking about MMO’s? Wow, barnabe, that’s pretty ridiculous, even coming from you. WoW says hi (SW ROFL).

  127. SW:

‘Who would rather play it on the PC?’

    For an MMO, for sure.

I dare you to try to co-ordinate a battle in Eve if it were a console game ;) (extreme example, hehehe)

  128. CarlB:

Oops, looks like at least one PS3 owner here won’t pick up FFXIV:

    (Barnabe Jones:May 29th, 2009)

“I do like MMORPGs, but I refuse to pay a monthly fee.”

  129. SW:

    You old post trauler you!

So does anyone else feel let down by the whole show yet?

I’m going to say I’m there (i was when i left work).

I think i’m getting old and grey, I remember jizzing in my pants when they announced Zelda TTP…

  130. CarlB:

Not really. I clearly remembered him saying it just a few days ago, and of course it was in the only MMO article on the front page of Blorge.

  131. CarlB:

    Okay, second.

  132. CarlB:

SW, as far as the show, natal seemed to be the only thing that really had that “wow” factor.

  133. CarlB:

    “Natal meets Burnout Paradise” xbox360.ign.com/articles/989/989245p1.html

  134. SW:

Interesting article, IGN seemed to enjoy using it.

What I do like is that potentially this is a one hit $80 ish puchase that can them mimic alot of other peripherals – saving $$$ is always cool.

I hope they eventually package it with a little wireless ‘nunchuck style’ analogue stick with a button or two. I think they’re really going to need it if they decide to use it for FPS’s or RPG’s, etc.

  135. CarlB:

I think we just haven’t gotten to use a quality product yet, so we may have trouble imagining how it would work. I don’t see the need to have buttons or sticks if the sensing capabilities are as strong as they show.

  136. SW:

Well take metroid prime, you had to turn around by pointing the wiimote towards the end of the screen. So, how do you walk forward? Analogue stick. Now, if there is no stick, what are we going to do, lean forward, ‘fake’ walk on our carpets, kind of like those thunderbirds puppets?

Same with anything in the 3rd person, how can you turn around? Of course you can’t physically do it because you couldn’t see the screen anymore!

I do agree that this is all new stuff and i think the REAL tech demos will be either shown as the year progresses or they will drop some big shells at e3 next year as to what it can do.

I guess i’m just overthinking this thing. The odds are that for any ’standard’ game, such as gta, mercenaries, oblivion(altho i have to say, if they can replicate the mace thing from the sony show that would be awesome to smite people with!) etc etc it won’t be used except for neat ‘touches’ such as voice/facial stuff.

  137. Spideydog:

I agree, there is going to be a need to at least a couple of buttons to do what movement wont, unless they can come up with something ??? I am only talking about the games non-casual by the way.

  138. CarlB:

For the movement I think simple hand gestures and/or voice recognition would work fine. There could also be menu options on the border of the screen, or you could pull them down, so you could point to and “touch” whatever you want to do or to open up other menus, similar to PC RPG menus in the past.

  139. SW:

Well, like I say, I’m just over thinking this one.

The burnout thing is supposed to be great, but with a racer the input is minimal compared to 1st/3rd person shooters for example :

I’d like to see you crouch jump whilst spinning 180 and letting a machine gun fire with a few hand gestures, unless you have 6 hands.

Still, i’m sure for golf, snooker/pool, even certain first person games, especially the ‘on rails’ stuff could be pulled off pretty well.

But at this point, I’m tired and I give up :)

Wake me up in 12 months.

  140. Barnabe Jones:

My point was… PC don’t count as a platform in the “console wars”. Of coarse a MMO will appear on the PC. MMO’s and PC go hand in hand.

Microsoft “exclusives” with PC counterparts: Gears, Mass Effect, etc, etc. It’s a pretty stand affair.

As far as the fee… I’m standing by what I said earlier. I’m waiting until we get a bit more info on XIV though. If it’s $12 a month, I’ll probably pass.

  141. Happyhockum:

    SW

I think you’re getting carried away with the idea that the option to use no controllers will mean nobody uses a controller for anything anymore.

    I don’t think that’s likely.

I do see the option in a lot of games to go without a controller (or, for those who feel more comfortable with one, the option to use one……kind of like a racing game allows a manual gear shoft or an auto trans).

Also, being able to scan in your own peripherals was foe me a superb idea and one that’ll open up all sorts of possibilities.

  142. CarlB:

I agree Barnabe. I think others have mentioned that before but to little effect to most PS3 owners. Now that a major Sony PS3 console exclusive has a PC counterpart they might begin to see the light.

I will definitely give it a shot if it has a 2 week/ 30 day free trial as XI did.

  143. Arvis:

    Happy,

But I thought the whole REASON that Natal was “teh superiorz” was because it allegedly eliminated the need for a controller?

SW: To move forward with Natal, you simply… walk forward… into your television and knock it over. LAWSUITS FOR EVERYONE!

    -Arvis

  144. SW:

    YAY! Lawsuits for all! ;)

@HH – I was really going off what a couple of people who showed said, such as Peter Molynuexexeuxexxxxx (Sp?) who said the that the controller is this uber barrier that needs to be broken down.

What really needs to happen is that this tech. needs to be integrated into existing games, and not used to replace anything (or very little).

I could image for example, (again using fable ;) ) that you were playing fable, 3rd person style in the classic way, buy they could integrate bar games, like drinking games where you needed to ‘down imaginary pints’ or play darts or pool.

  145. SW:

    YAY! Lawsuits for all!

    *double post of goodness*

  146. Happyhockum:

    Arvis:
“I thought the whole REASON that Natal was “teh superiorz” was because it allegedly eliminated the need for a controller?”

    SW:
“I was really going off what a couple of people who showed said, such as Peter Molynuexexeuxexxxxx (Sp?) who said the that the controller is this uber barrier that needs to be broken down.

I don’t think that in every case it has to be one approach exclusively.

For your more casual pick up and play stuff no controller at all will be of great benefit.

For your more ’serious’ gaming, motion control, voice recognition & scanning objects could well open up entirely new elements to gaming.

Microsoft make several controllers of various types, I don’t hear anyone saying they were not going to stop producing them from now on.

  147. Arvis:

Heh, remember last year after E3 when the 360 diehards were preaching about how amazing You’re In The Movies and Lips were going to be? Good times…

Although I hope Natal doesn’t end up quite THAT pathetic, at least. I don’t care who you are, there is promise in that device.

    -Arvis

  148. SW:

    The wii needs natal.

That way, on No More Hero’s, when you save, you could be forced to actually sit as if you were on the can. And with facial recognition, it could force you to ’strain’.

Ok, i am loving natal more and more every day.

    @Barnabee and Carl,

I think FFXIV will most likely use the Sony MMO model. A huge portion of the game will be free since you are buying a $60 game and to get expand the quests a portion will have to be paid etc…

Its sort of like the DLC model Fallout 3 uses. You pay to extend the life of the game.

When I spoke to the Sony rep at Comic Con about DC Universe, he said they are trying to standardize this approach as it makes MMOs less intimidating for new gamers.
If you think about it MMOs are like your RPGs with main quests, side quests etc… you just play together with live people.

I know Agency will also use a similar cost model.

  150. Ivan_PSP:

I love MMO i love Final Fantasy XI on PlayStation 2.
The Agency is gonna awesome a must have just looking at it makes me wanna buy it. I was also playing UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves last night is awesome I’m about to play now.

  151. CarlB:

That sounds pretty cool Mike… do you have any official numbers on what total Final Fantasy XI sales are?

  152. CarlB:

Hey Mike, don’t forget to get Ivan’s spam as well.

  153. CarlB:

More specifically his “live blog” above that was copied and pasted to the other current threads on blorge.

  155. Roca.:

thanks for deleting kev post, he thinks by posting all that crap he is going to convince ppl that Forza 3 is better than GT5.

That’s like saying Ninja Blade is better than God of War

  156. kev:

mike – you’re a tool. you’ll delete my post full of newsworthy tidbits, but keep Ivan’s insane ramblings….. wtf?

Roca – neither game is better than the other yet. neither is on the market. altho; for my money, i’ll take Forza 3, judging from previous games. GT is stale, old and past its prime. sorry.

  157. Arvis:

“GT is stale, old and past its prime. sorry.”

Heh, you’re in the minority on that issue then. No one really cares that much about Forza.

“Stale?” Have you LOOKED at Forza lately? It looks like a PS2 game.

“Old?” Straight track racing… and that’s it? Talk about old, GT2 had more racing options.

“Past it’s prime?” At least Gran Turismo HAS a “prime” to get past. Forza was never anything special.

    Deal with it.

    -Arvis

  158. Happyhockum:

    Roca

    It’s a car racing game.

A lot like all the previous car racing games with a tweak and a twiddle here and there.

    Both will look impressive.

Both will have some silly nonsense that some will find essential (adjustable suspension damping anyone?).
Personally (having dipped my toe in car and mortorcycle racing) I just find all that stuff silly in the extreme.

Let’s be honest, with the really anal games (800 cars, LMAO) they’re all much the same.

    Potayto, potato.

The idea that we (often) keep getting done buying the same game over and over is one with a lot of merit IMO.

If it really is something you feel so passionately about and have such a keen interest in realism and detail then why not go & try to do it for real?

It’s far more fun than w@nking away in front of your TV for days at a time and a far better use to put all your noise and energy into.
    Seriously.

  159. Arvis:

“If it really is something you feel so passionately about and have such a keen interest in realism and detail then why not go & try to do it for real?”

Ha! Would love to, Happy, and to an extent I have done that (test drove 350z and RX-8 just to do it). But I won’t be able to race an actual Dodge Viper GTS anytime soon, as I don’t have millions of dollars. I’m glad you do, though, Happy, and don’t need to lower yourself down to living vicariously through video games. God forbid, right?

    -Arvis

  160. SW:

Does that mean I have to go buy an F22 Raptor instead of playing HAWX? :(

(I’d like to point out that I no longer play hawx and only did so to play with my buddies, it wasn’t very good.)

  161. Roca.:

LOL @ Kev, Go ahead and do Nascar Racing in real life, then let me know how it went!

The PSP version distroy forza 3. GT5 on the other hand is in its own class

  162. Happyhockum:

    Arvis & Roca

Yeah, of course, no-one ever did any sort of racing except multi-million $ racing, right?

Ignore the point if you like but I think it remains pretty valid nevertheless.

Why don’t they go the whole hog (so Roca and those who consider the most arcane detail essential and what makes a great game) and allow you to reprogram the ignition with proper 3D maps and closed loop fuelling data?

    Come on.

    Admit it.

It’s gotten right up it’s own ar$e with some of that fluff and is looking pretty silly & kind of missing the point right there.

(and even sillier are those who claim that sort of nonsense is incredibly great and what makes one game better than another)

  163. Roca.:

    HAPPY to the RESCUE!!!!

    But FAILED HORROBLY

  164. Happyhockum:

Wow, the sheer compelling power of your agument Roca/Ivan.

    Not.

  165. Roca.:

look at all the nonsense you wrote. are you really a gamer? how old are you? how you do in ur sped class?

stop posting ur stupid comments if you dont know what ur talking abou, YOU ARE WASTING POSTING SPACE

  166. CarlB:

Ivan, just use your original name instead of roca.

  167. SW:

‘Yeah, of course, no-one ever did any sort of racing except multi-million $ racing, right?

Ignore the point if you like but I think it remains pretty valid nevertheless.’

Yes and no. While there are indeed events that don’t require the use of a very expensive vehicle, they do require more money, time, and dedication than the sub $100 game you can purchase and get enjoyment out of in about 15 minutes.

You can still be passionate about something and not go and actually do it. Look at all the football hooligans/fans/supporters. I bet less than %10 can actually play a good game of footy, but then slap a pint glass in your face for support another team. (its not really a great example, but i wanted to put the image of being glassed in the face onto the pages of blorge)

  168. Roca.:

    Carlb get off my balls.

  169. Arvis:

Happy, you’re the one who is ignoring the point. What sort of racing are you suggesting that is not significantly more dangerous and expensive than playing a racing video game?

You’re undercutting the entire POINT of gaming in the first place, and you call it a “valid point.”

This point here: “It’s gotten right up it’s own ar$e with some of that fluff” That may be true for you, and even me to an extent (I like tuning the engine with different parts and upgrades, but I’m not one for “tweaking my camber” or “adjusting downforce ratios.”) But a lot of other enthusiasts love that crap.

    To each his own, right?

    -Arvis

  170. Roca.:

If Forza had 800 cars and Gran Turismo 400 they would have been saying all sorts of stuff

  171. Arvis:

    *laughs*

Too true, Roca, but why stoop to that level?

    -Arvis

  172. Roca.:

    You are right arvis.

  173. Happyhockum:

    Arvis

You and Roca made comments about Nascar and some dumb stuff about my try racing comments.
I merely pointed out that there are several stages in between and some very (relatively speaking) inexpensive.
Club racing in little Ford Fiestas for instance.
    Forgotten era motorcycle racing.

My point was that instead of trying to points score over what are actually the most pointless and arcane elements of a racing game why not try the real thing if you are really into it so deeply?

You see unlike Roca (who, true to type, insists everyone must be as infantile as him/herself) I couldn’t care less whether a racing game has more than 400 cars.
I certainly would not be trying to score laughably pathetic points on the subject as s/he has done all over this board.

I see you also rushed in to agree with that childish stupidity Arvis, oh dear.

  174. SW:

‘I see you also rushed in to agree with that childish stupidity Arvis, oh dear.’

But it was the truth. If the shoe was on the other foot, some of the MS fanboys here would be calling out GT5 for not having 8.2 billion vehicles. If MS lost halo to Sony the sony fanboys would be spurting cream all over thier keyboards as they were typing it out. Its just the way it is!

  175. Arvis:

“I couldn’t care less whether a racing game has more than 400 cars.”

Then for the love of all that is good, PLEASE just shut up. If you don’t care, prove it, and stop talking about it.

This was fun. Same time tomorrow?

    -Arvis

  176. Happyhockum:

    SW:
“But it was the truth. If the shoe was on the other foot, some of the MS fanboys here would be calling out GT5 for not having 8.2 billion vehicles.”

Then I’d be saying that was just as pointless & dumb in that instance too.
    Clear?

    Arvis:
“If you don’t care, prove it, and stop talking about it.”

Naaaa b*llocks to that, if he’s being a pr*ck then it’s fair game to point it out.

    Arvis:
“This was fun. Same time tomorrow?”

    Naturally. ;)

  177. harry sachz:

“I’m from the PlayStation Team we run this site so be quiet Xbox 360 owners have no rights.”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA

  178. SW:

    @HH

    ‘Clear?’

    Sir Yes Sir!

It was really more of a reference towards you saying : ‘I see you also rushed in to agree with that childish stupidity Arvis, oh dear.’

I wasn’t really saying you wouldn’t call it stupid, but i saw no reason to seemingly take a jab at Arvis just because he agreed with Roca-Tard, because anyone with a brain would have agreed with that particular statement!

    Opaque?

  179. Happyhockum:

    SW

Seriously my friend, all that sort of stuff is Angels on pin-heads to me.

I very much doubt any but the most tragic would ever ‘use’ more than say, oh lets be generous, 200 out of the 800 (assuming there really is genuine difference).

Like I said, there comes a point when you have to admit almost no-one cares.
    It’s just waving spec-sheets.

Whichever ‘brand’ of fanboy it’s nonsense.

  180. Roca.:

    just shut up happy

  181. Happyhockum:

Wow, rapier-like wit and repartee there, sockie coward.

Oscar Wilde watch out there’s competiton out there for you
(obviously nothing to do amusing wit).

  182. Arvis:

“I very much doubt any but the most tragic would ever ‘use’ more than say, oh lets be generous, 200 out of the 800″

Again, Happy, not the point. Different people are going to want to use different cars, so a large selection is a must. The bigger selection, the more likely the cars that YOU want to use will be there.

    Savvy?

    -Arvis

  183. Happyhockum:

    I think you’re quibbling Arvis.

    Once you’ve included the 100, 150, 200 most famous/known cars it’s all just fluff.

In other words (as I’;ve said all along) nothing in itself that equates to a ‘better’ game.

  184. kev:

arvis – you would have a point if there were 800 different makes and models of cars. the problem is, there are many, many versions of the same car in GT games, just with slight variations. Gamers can’t tell the difference between all 40+ skylines in GT4. it’s just fluff to pad the marketing.

to say the selection makes it better for the cars you want is not true. for instance, GT games in the past had hundreds of cars, but if you wanted to drive a Porsche or Ferrari (as any good car nut would) you were out of luck as they were not included in previous GT versions.
just because there are more does not mean the one you want to drive is present.

amount of cars is pointless in a simulator. it’s the physics that make or break a sim. 800 cars with bumper car physics are exactly that. 800 cars with bumpercar (unnatural) physics. this is why gamers can bump through corners and win races with GT games.

  185. Arvis:

    “Once you’ve included the 100, 150, 200 most famous/known cars it’s all just fluff.”

Still not getting it. The first car I ever owned was a 1980 Chevy Malibu Classic. I would LOVE to have that car in Gran Turismo. The more cars they have in the game, the more likely the really obscure cars that individuals have a special fondness for will be included. I don’t think a racer that only has 200 cars is going to have a 1980 Chevy Malibu Classic, you see…

On the other hand, if Forza had a 1980 Chevy Malibu Classic that I could trick out and race, I would buy it tomorrow.

Kev, you don’t know anything about GT5. Your point about Ferrari and Porsche is valid, which is why I earlier said that comparing 400 and 800 isn’t necessarily a big deal if there are different cars different people would want within those huge numbers. But if it’s PHYSICS you want, you should give GT5 a look when it comes out. It will have a special difficulty mode that is designed to be as realistic as is possible. So if GT5 has the cars you want (Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini) and the realistic physics you’re looking for, why not try it out?

    -Arvis

  186. kev:

arvis – i’ll wait to read the reviews of GT5. if kaz hasn’t done a better job of physics than he did in GT4 ( bumpercar physics), i won’t even waste my time with it. bumping other cars to win a race is a dumb, but what GT games are known for. “realistic as possible” is marketing spin. it’s amazing how easily you’re sold. seriously.

  187. Happyhockum:

Arvis, I think you’re the one not getting it.

You can live in hope that a zilion colour options equates to the odd-ball car you’re dreaming of and if that makes the game ‘better’ for you then good for you.
Personally I think it takes a damned sight more than that.

I think we’ve exhausted this one.

  188. Arvis:

“bumping other cars to win a race is a dumb, but what GT games are known for.”

Har har har! Promise me you won’t try and pretend to be objective on this issue after making a statement like that, Kev.

Happy, yeah, we’ve probably exhausted this. I do see where you’re coming from. I hope you got what I was trying to say, too.

    -Arvis

  189. kev:

Arvis – here’s a good read about Forza 3 and what a great sim is made of. unlike Gran Turismo..

    http://www.neoseeker.com/news/10932-e3-2009-forza-motorsport-3-closed-demo-with-dan-greenawalt/

i’m not objective, Arvis. I already know forza is the superior sim.
