E3 2009: Sony impressions and letter grade reviews including Microsoft
Sony wrapped up its press conference today and there were a few surprises despite the fact that one of the biggest stories leaked out a bit early. Surprisingly, Sony had a ton of new information jam packed into the two hour press conference.
Sony’s press conference was quite enjoyable. The presentation didn’t have the flair Microsoft had at its press conference, but the amount of content was insane. There were so many things jam packed into it, I can’t even talk about half the things discussed during the conference. I’m just going to skip over the PS2 stuff, glaze over the PSN news and focus on the PSP and PS3 news.
PSN gets even more iTunes like than before
The only real interesting news about PSN was that it picked up like 20 more partners for its video service. I have to say that Sony has been aggressively on-boarding studios left and right and its nice to have that kind of library. The PSN video store is probably one of the biggest online stores to sell and rent video out on the market. It is nice to be able to get actual high quality 1080p movies on the fly.
Sony revealed today that the company will be launching a new media manager called Media Go. From the sound of it, the Media Go will be more iTunes like where users can actually fully manage music as well as purchase MP3s from the store. Sony is also on-boarding developers to create bite-sized apps for the PSP Go! by reducing the cost of the development tools by 80 percent.
Movies and music downloads will also be accessible via the PSN store directly from the PSP and PSP Go! via WiFi.
Sony going casual on us?
I’m getting a little sick of all the manufacturers jumping on-board the casual bandwagon. I was a bit disappointed Microsoft made its whole conference about this, and Sony was no exception. Sony surprised many in the gaming community today when the company broke out its long rumored motion sensing controller during E3.
If you read my story from October of last year here, you can see the patent for the break-apart controller. The controller from the patent looks practically the same as the one shown at E3 with the light being generated via the odd round end. According to the patent the PS3eye Cam uses ultrasound as well as LED to pin-point the position of the controller with laser accuracy.
PS Wand a tactical last minute move?
I have to be honest, the demo seemed like it was thrown together at the last-minute. It almost seemed like Sony saw Microsoft’s Natal and flew their top-secret wand project into the show. I was impressed with the tech demo and have to agree with Dave, that Sony actually gave us a live demonstration while Microsoft did not. Also, I do not consider Ricochet a live demonstration of anything the existing Xbox Vision Cam can’t do.
Microsoft’s Natal Milo presentation was well prepared and spoon-fed me the vision of how the device could potentially work, while Sony really left it up to the imagination of the individual on its application, which was a bit risky. However, luckily for me during the archery demo, instantly the first thought that came into my head was how cool it would be for that to be implemented into Oblivion.
[Watch the archery tech video here]
The journalists at the conference were clearly impressed with the precession and accuracy of the wand as well. The Wii-mote clearly lacks this as the character on-screen just does a pre-animated action based on wide movements.
PSP is blowing up before my eyes:
Final Fantasy VII – nuff said
There were so many big announcements for the PSP today, I couldn’t believe my ears. Sony kicked off the PSP news with the announcement that Final Fantasy VII would be available for download off the PSN store today. This news alone made my day.
Big Boss returns to the portable
Big announcements were made regarding the unveiling of Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker. The story continues the saga of Big Boss as expected, but the trailer seems to tease possible four player co-op capability. The story continues from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, so if you have a PS3 with BC or a PS2 it might be a good idea to go play it again.
Gran Turismo PSP is finally shown and dated
The highly anticipated Gran Turismo Portable was unveiled today and it was announced to be shipping along side the PSP Go! this October. The GT: PSP will support online and ad-hoc mode for races at 60fps.
Jak and Daxter finally returns

For those that don’t know, before Uncharted there was Jak and Daxter from Naughty Dog. The series was one my absolute favorites as the stories were great. Jak and Daxter was always off on to some strange city or world on a quest. The duo makes a comeback in a brand new adventure on the PSP titled, Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier.
The next iteration in the franchise is actually in good hands as it is being developed by High Impact Games, which is made up of former Naughty Dog employees.
New Resident Evil game for PSP
This was another announcement that came out of left field as Sony announced that a brand new standalone game from the Resident Evil series will be heading towards the PSP soon. The PSP is finally looking like a powerhouse handheld.
Lets talk about the PS3 games:
PS3 Exclusive Agent from Rockstar

The long awaited PS3 exclusive game from Rockstar was finally revealed today as the Agent. I was disappointed that Sony didn’t even show a mocked up teaser trailer to whet our appetites. In a press release, according to Sam Houser founder of Rockstar described Agent as the “ultimate action game.”
He states:
We have always enjoyed making action games, and with Agent we are making what we believe will be the ultimate action game… Agent is a game we have wanted to make for a long time. The team in Edinburgh is doing an amazing job combining intense action, atmosphere and story in a great period setting to create something that feels quite unique. We cannot wait for people to experience this game.
Apparently, “Agent takes players on a paranoid journey into the world of counter-intelligence, espionage and political assassinations during the height of the Cold War at the end of the 1970s.”
PS3 Exclusive Final Fantasy XIV shocks audience

The biggest bomb dropped this E3 is the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV. This game was completely off the radar, as there was not even a single rumor or whisper anywhere. FF14 will be a next gen MMORPG from Square Enix. When I first heard the news my jaw literally dropped.
It looks like Square Enix has dumped all of their chips into the PS3 as the studio will have three big Final Fantasy titles hitting the console within the next two years with: Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII: Versus (TBA) and Final Fantasy XIV.
God of War 3 ends the conference on a high note
Sony ended the conference with live gameplay of God of War 3 and it was intense. Watching the Sony developer playing the game made me tense up as the action sequences were intense and visceral. There was one moment where Kratos rips open a beast’s belly and its intestines poured out. The game has been dated to hit launch next March.
That about wraps up the highlights from the Sony press conference. As I mentioned there were a ton of information I am just skipping over. I will not talk about Gran Turismo 5 (yes it has damage), The Last Guardian, Assassin’s Creed PSP and ModNation Racers as it will make this article way too long. However, you can be assured that I will talk about these games in the near future.
Overall, if I were to grade the two conferences I would give Microsoft an A on presentation and B on content. I would give Sony a B on presentation and an A on content.
(Check out my impression of Microsoft’s press conference here)

“Sony actually gave us a live demonstration while Microsoft did not.”
Not sure where you guys are getting your information Mike, but Microsoft did a live demo on stage of Natal, and Ricochet was only one of several things demonstrated live on stage.
Here is a link to fill you in:

Yes, Carl but those tech demos Microsoft has been able to do with the old Vision cam. Its not really impressive.
The Natal Milo project is what blows everyone’s minds.
If it can recognize speech and respond correctly and interact properly despite angles etc.. that would be revolutionary.
However, I do have some doubts as I can’t even get my Lexus Navigation system to recognize my command to find the nearest Gas station.
June 3rd, 2009
I have to agree FFXIV was the “biggest bomb dropped” by Sony at the conference, unfortunately taking the wind out of it’s sails (and most likely future sales on PS3) afterwards was confirmation of it on PC as well. As with the past MMO iterations, there is a good chance it will sell significantly more on PC.
June 3rd, 2009
I’m sure it will sell well on both the PS3 and PC this generation. Every PS3 has a HDD, which the PS2 didn’t have.
Paying $150 several years ago for a PS2 HDD and game was a tough pill to swallow, but not so anymore.
Think of it like this – I would rather get it on the PS3 than PC, I’m sure you and every other gamer out there will most likely feel the same way.
June 3rd, 2009
Sorry Mike, but could you please link to the same tech demos being done with the old Vision cam? I’m having trouble finding them manipulate the avatar, paint, and navigate through menus with gestures, use body movements (to include minute movements and fast speeds), voice recognition, facial recognition, etc.
I think your Lexus Navigation system may be using an older tech than the voice recognition the Google app on my IPhone 3G currently uses, at it works fine for me. I used it to search “Bruno Eminem Youtube” and “Lamborghini SUV crash” just fine recently, and it works the first time every time.
June 3rd, 2009
Looked live to me, but to me there was a noticable lag between the body movement and the on screen movement, where the PS3 wand looked like actual real tracking.
I persoanlly like ot have a controller in my hand when playing, however aving said that the ability to scroll through menus etc without a controller is very cool.
June 3rd, 2009
Actually, no, I would rather get it on the PS3 as my laptop isn’t up to snuff. SW has a capable rig though. Of course both versions will do well, and there is just as good a chance it will sell better on PS3. But I believe it would have been even better for future PS3 sales if they could have kept it as an exclusive solely for PS3.
June 3rd, 2009
“the ability to scroll through menus etc without a controller is very cool.” I’m with you Rhino, but where did you see the “noticeable lag” exactly?
June 3rd, 2009
Yeah I don’t know why Mike and Dave are saying that the Natal stuff wasn’t demoed live….
June 3rd, 2009
FFS carl, he is entitled to his opinion without getting the spanish inquisition !!!!
June 3rd, 2009
Oh boy.. Carl you just might be a bit too eager.
I’m not saying the cam is not better than the old vision cam – there is not doubt this new cam from the company Msft recently bought out is superior tech than the old vision cam.
However lets just say that I’m glad you were impressed with those things, the old vision cam was capable of motion & depth detection.
although there is very little doubt in anyone’s mind the Milo project was the gem of Natal, which wasn’t shown live unfortunately.
I think what Rhino is talking about is the 1 to 1 relationship. I think its unavoidable when there is no actual sensor on the target end from the source.
June 3rd, 2009
Spideydog, look who is “Mr. RAGE” now? I just asked an honest question.
June 3rd, 2009
@Harry,
May be its because I actually own the old vision cam for the Xbox… lol
Totemball is a blast.. its hard to make it do a quick roll left to right with your arms though, but good to play with the family.
June 3rd, 2009
Wow, if think saying FFS is RAGE, then HH’s rants must have been OFF THE PLANET …..
Anyways your question was was not “honest”. It was accusatory.
June 3rd, 2009
Oh boy… Mike you may just be a bit too eager
I never said you stated the old vision cam was better, I just asked you to link to where the old tech had voice and facial recognition, hand gestures, menu nav, plus mocap of the entire body as you stated, “those tech demos Microsoft has been able to do with the old Vision cam.” I honestly do not remember seeing that before or hearing that the Vision cam was capable of those things, and thought maybe you could point me in the right direction as I never owned one or was really interested in it.
June 3rd, 2009
Oh sorry spidey, I didn’t know one sincere question was the “spanish inquisition”. It actually was honest, I would like to know at what point he saw the lag, because I looked for it and couldn’t see it myself, so maybe I wasn’t looking close enough or missed something.
June 3rd, 2009
By looking at the tone of your posts in this thread alone CarlB, you treat most people here with contempt with a good dose of smart arse. It only comes off making you look like a know all twat.
As I said, he is entitled to think there was lag without you placing a demand on him to point out “EXACTLY” where it was.
For the record, I though I saw a tiny amount of lag as well. But then again, the same could be said for the sony wand.
You don’t agree with him, well say so without trying to make people look like idiots.
June 3rd, 2009
Spidey, I’m not sure you are getting this, but let me repeat: I did not see any significant lag and thought I missed it. I thought there might have been an exact point and asked a question. I apologize if I ruffled your feathers or gave you the wrong impression.
June 3rd, 2009
lol, Carl … I don’t quite think you get what I’m saying. The old vision cam is capable of doing everything that was shown live. I’m not going to explain where and how as I will leave that up to you…
let me get you started.. here is the link to what you are looking for: http://WWW.GOOGLE.COM
June 3rd, 2009
Thats not the way you come across, well to me anyways. Besides, he didn’t say significant, he said noticeable.
Rant finished, RAGE subsided. Next discussion.
In saying all this, I will be quite eager to give Natal a crack when it comes out.
June 3rd, 2009
@Spideydog,
lol.. the way he mimics and nitpicks all of my responses does remind me of my annoying nephew in some ways.
Just giving ya a hard time Carl.
Goodnite Blorge readers.
June 3rd, 2009
Anyway, just saw this (before your helpful link Mike) and thought it was an interesting take on how exactly Natal is different from past motion cameras (like what the vision cam couldn’t do that was shown live at the show with Natal) and how the burnout paradise demo worked out for a reporter that was doubting the tech was real:
news.cnet.com/8301-10797_3-10255403-235.html
June 3rd, 2009
We all do it
All in good fun. A healthy discussion.
June 3rd, 2009
Sorry Mike. I guess I am a bit nitpicky at times.
June 3rd, 2009
So let me get this straight. Natal lets you control the dashboard with your body (equivilent of the XMB) and play some games using your body… Whereas the PS3 wand controller lets you also use your body and hands to control whatevers on the screen.
Well i’m glad that Sony concentrated so much on games. I think i’ve finally got an excuse to get a PSP now, i might get a psp3000 though, it looks a bit expensive the PSP GO.
My biggest announcement from Sony was seeing GT5 which i was hyped for. And even more the fact that Kaz didn’t forget to include damage! I hope the real game can match the psp version of 800 cars, but i don’t imagine so…
June 3rd, 2009
Carl B
It’s for the tabloids remember.
Mike
You really are a work of art and boy do you look stupid trying to argue that something wasn’t there when it was. Unless you have some inside information about the old vision cam, your full of shit. The only thing that thing did was allow video chat, Take Pictures, scan barcodes, record Video, and that is it. Let me tell you what looked stupid. That joke of a motion control that Sony showed off. Did you see the hugh gulp that guy did after they were both announced to show off the motion control, “As an engineer im very excited about the technology were going to show off today, it far surpasses anythng you can get on the markt now.” GULP!!! That dude swallow so hard his adams apple was doing break dancing on his neck. Jack Trenton did it too. Right at the begining right after he listed a bunch of games. Trenton said: “when you look at the list it is abudently clear in 2009 if you want to have the untimate gaming experience you need playstation” GULP!!! (thoughts of MS Motion Control going through his head I would guess) That’s what I call swallowing the lie. I don’t even think he believes it because he knew he had a hard act to follow since Microsoft is the King of E3 Confrences. Anyway I think it was stupid of Sony to show up with something that’s not even ready. Sounds like Home! Anyways to be honest it was quite imaginative. it was kind of cool and the response look bang on but the shooting was terrible. Did you see how long it took him to shoot down the Eye off the TV. He was like so aiming at it and it did not even hit it until he tried again. it looks cool but they showed up with a waggel divice that even Rudolph would get jelous about. it wasn’t even the final design and it made the Wiimote and Numbchuk look like a better design. So as for the games the only ones that were worth my time of day was Unchartered 2 and Gods of war. Even though I don’t understand the connection to Greek Mythologh. The characters look more like Beast and zombies and a hugh lava man but that was sick and I’m giving props for those two games.
June 3rd, 2009
Oh and one more thing about the Motion Control. It was cool and all but to show that off knowing that what MS did was ground breaking with their Motion Control was like looking at the past. I think I would not have showed it and I probably would have gone back to the drawing board. Oh and Mike, IGN & Joystiq both claim it works just like Microsoft showed it. I do personally think a device in hand is still better for shooting games but i guess I’ll find out later but Gametrack’s controller is coming for both the 360 and the PS3. Oh and Mike notice that every 3rd party title memtioned at the 360 conference had some kind of excluxsive deal attatched. Can’t say the same for Sony’s conference. It makes you wonder why Ubisoft would wait for Sony’s conference to announce Assasins Creed and there was nothing special to mention. They might as well have just demoed it at their own conference.
June 3rd, 2009
3DV really did the groundbreaking work, MS just licensed it and probably did some work on the software side (wasn’t the tech. itself, demo’d at last years E3 by 3DV?).
June 3rd, 2009
“Anyway I think it was stupid of Sony to show up with something that’s not even ready.”
Oh, and Natal is ready is it? No release window, no price information, no third parties using it, a year away at least, a video which quite clearly says “Product Vision” at the start of it and a Lionhead game seemingly in its very early stages.
Yep, “Project” Natal sounds locked and ready to go to me!
At least Sony said their work was a work very much in progress.
June 3rd, 2009
I gotta say CAD, you are soooo close to becoming Ivan’s alter ego, it is not funny.
June 3rd, 2009
CAD you ought to take a look at this if you thought Sony’s motion controller was bad. I lol’d so hard. At least Sony’s controller was working properly
.youtube.com/watch?v=YmY0JNRIPOU
June 3rd, 2009
at 25 seconds i lol’d my ass off.
June 3rd, 2009
MS tried to distract with their conference. Ringo and Paul? Then Steven Spielberg? It had more flare but at the end of the day I was more impressed with what Sony showed off.
June 3rd, 2009
In all honesty, they really both did pretty good job this year. Even Nintendo managed to step it up a bit.
With the release of the PSP Go, I felt like the PSP took up a large chunk of the show. I already own a PSP, but it’s really nice to see MGS, Resident Evil, LPB, Soul Calibur, and GT!
The demo’s for MAG, Uncharted 2, and GOW were amazing. I think FF XIV was the biggest surprise game wise for most people this E3. Just hearing about the RockStar game was awesome also.
The tek demo was a rough unfinished product, but it still managed to look better than anything to date that’s been done on the Wii. If anyone could come up with cool motion games it’s SCE.
Downloaded FF VII and the FF Dissidia wallpaper last night… downloading Uncharted 2 beta as I type. I’m happy.
June 3rd, 2009
It looks like everyone’s happy…let’s just leave it at that then
June 3rd, 2009
Some quick points about FF VII…
It includes the manual as well as the full Brady strategy guide, which is a nice touch. The manual & strategy guide can be accessed from the XMB during game play.
If you own an HD TV, turn the Full Screen and smoothing option on through the XMB. It makes a huge difference.
June 3rd, 2009
@ CAD
I do personally think a device in hand is still better for shooting games but i guess I’ll find out later but Gametrack’s controller is coming for both the 360 and the PS3.
Im not a huge fan of motion sensing, But i agree with you (this is not a fanboy talk) a device in hand is actually better. Sony can do alot of things with the Wand, and M$ has its own thing going, but like you said we going to have wait to find out.
“Oh and Mike notice that every 3rd party title memtioned at the 360 conference had some kind of excluxsive deal attatched.”
Batman:AA: Joker as a playable character for free.
Assasin’s Creed: PS3 – PSP connectivity
June 3rd, 2009
Heavy Rain and White Knight Chronicle were noshow as they demo it earlier at pre-E3 GDC or something like that.
June 3rd, 2009
CarlB:
“afterwards was confirmation of it on PC as well. As with the past MMO iterations, there is a good chance it will sell significantly more on PC.”
Then that means Left 4 Dead 2 is not a Exclusive right.
And as we all know the PS3 supports Keyboard & mouse. there is no need to upgrade, and you can use ur huge HD tv to play FF14
June 3rd, 2009
Don’t try and work it out Roca.
Xbox users can’t decide whether something on 360 and PC is exclusive or not; CAD says it is, kev it isn’t.
They can’t make up their minds.
June 3rd, 2009
I hope White Knight makes it for 2009, but I don’t think it will. They were adding in voice chat for the online mode, so it might push it back a little.
June 3rd, 2009
Yeah, this whole “exclusive” argument is pretty silly. Gears, Left 4 Dead, Mass Effect, and others were all “exclusive” to the 360 but also showed up on the PC. I don’t really see any point in this argument. Who cares?
June 3rd, 2009
So a MMO PS3 exclusive is going to the PC as well… and that’s a bad thing why exactly?
June 3rd, 2009
Mike Ferro
“but those tech demos Microsoft has been able to do with the old Vision cam”
I don’t see how that’s possible, the new cam is stereoscopic (giving depth perception), surely the old one was a single lens job and therefore incapable of that much at least?
Spideydog
“you treat most people here with contempt with a good dose of smart arse”
Hello Mr Black Kettle, it’s the dark pot here.
“then HH’s rants”
I know it’s tough but you’re just going to have to get over me, there’s no future for us no matter how much sad stalking you do or how obsessional you become.
Roca.:
“I do personally think a device in hand is still better for shooting games”
I expect for those games where it is absolutely necessary you’ll see the use of (or the option to use) some sort of controller.
Even then, imagine COD4 with body movement.
It would be so much more natural.
Didn’t see the show, don’t have a PS3 so no interest.
But from what’s been described I am not hearing anything genuinely amazing, it all sounds pretty ordinary.
A couple of nice looking (expected) games and a lash-up motion device.
Nothing even close to the Natal stuff.
(and I await the whines about retreading old games and sequels.
Yeah right)
June 3rd, 2009
Its nauseating seeing CAD suck off MS for an idea that the Playstation brand had working for them back in the ps2 days.
It would be like Sony fans talking shit about achievment and putting on a positive spin about trophies.
Stop it know CAD. you look like an ass.
June 3rd, 2009
Happy
“Didn’t see the show, don’t have a PS3 so no interest.

Stop being a fanboy, how can you say its not even close to Natal when u havent even seen what the Wand can do. The Wand showed it can do alot more than Natal, as we all know the PS Eye can do motion sensing. look up “Eye Pet” if you wanna see motion sensing at its best.
June 3rd, 2009
*now*
June 3rd, 2009
Kev and Happy never know what they are talking about, they just ass assume things, (Kev thinks Forza is better than Gran Turismo)
CAD on the other hand seem to know what he is talking about but sometimes he lets his 360 fanboy ego take over him.
But Kev and Happy two of the worst fanboys i have ever seen.
Example:
Happy: “I didnt get to see Sony’s wand but it aint nothing close to Natal”
June 3rd, 2009
“It would be like Sony fans talking shit about achievment and putting on a positive spin about trophies.”
Yep. I think that happened already.
Roca, sorry, but you must not have been here when we were trying to make the “console exclusive” argument. Another standard answer here is “nothing is exclusive”, and we would see any of them within a year on the other console anyway, with all expansion packs released.
June 3rd, 2009
“Xbox users can’t decide whether something on 360 and PC is exclusive or not; CAD says it is, kev it isn’t.
They can’t make up their minds.”
SW
You guys are fools if you want to make an argument out of if it is exclusive or not because a 360 title lands on the PC. What makes the argument look even stupider is that regardless if it’s on the 360 or PC, the PC titles come under “Games for Windows”. Guess who owns “Games for Windows” I don’t think I need to tell you the answer. Even Games for Windows runs LIVE for it’s Multiplayer and some games are cross-platform titles where 360 & PC players can play on LIVE Together. So no, it might not be 360 exclusive or PC exclusive but it is definately Microsoft exclusive and Microsoft owns both platforms so the argument is pretty stupid.
June 3rd, 2009
Or sorry SW that was ment for Lock_down but if you think like him then your included too and everyone else who makes that lame arguement.
June 3rd, 2009
“the PC titles come under “Games for Windowsâ€. Guess who owns “Games for Windowsâ€
They are Still PC games, Windows is an Operating System, ur PC is made by HP, Compac, Sony, Dell etc.
Which means 360/PC games are not exclusive becayse u can play on two different piece of hardware. Same goes for PS3/PC games.
June 3rd, 2009
Roca.:
“Happy: “I didnt get to see Sony’s wand but it aint nothing close to Natalâ€
Which would be unfair and silly if I couldn’t read.
I can read what you guys are saying about it along with what has been written here.
None of which comes close to what I saw in the Microsoft demo.
June 3rd, 2009
“CAD you ought to take a look at this if you thought Sony’s motion controller was bad.”
Bourne, I believe I siad:
“Anyways to be honest it was quite imaginative. it was kind of cool and the response look bang on”
June 3rd, 2009
Seeing is believing
June 3rd, 2009
Roca.:
“Seeing is believing”
Well we all know that isn’t necessarily the truth.
I’d be interested to know if Sony did what Microsoft did (something Mike seemed to overlook when he complained about not seeing Microsoft demo stuff properly).
Did they have people in after the show checking out the new stuff and playing with it?
I haven’t heard that yet, maybe someone knows?
June 3rd, 2009
CAD on the other hand seem to know what he is talking about but sometimes he lets his 360 fanboy ego take over him.
Yeah that would be me. Blam Mike for my earlier rant. That son of a bitch came in here talking shit that wasn’t even true. It just set me off.
June 3rd, 2009
LOL @ CAD’s comment on Mike
Happy,
since you like to read, and u dont want to see how sony’s Wand works, here a brief description:
“The best way to describe the PS3’s motion controller is like a black Wii-mote being used with Microsoft’s NATAL. Scream and cry all you want fanboys, but literally, that’s exactly how it operates.”
June 3rd, 2009
They are Still PC games, Windows is an Operating System, ur PC is made by HP, Compac, Sony, Dell etc.
No Roca your wrong. Just like 360 is a Platform so is Games for Windows. See for yourself. Go look in the game store next time your there and you will notice that there are PC games and then there are PC games that are labled under the Games for Windows platform. For example I own Tiger Woods for the PC and that is made by EA but then take Bioshock for example and it has the label Games for windows even though it’s a PC game too. Remember Games for Windows games run on LIVE. That is the biggest clue.
June 3rd, 2009
still two different piece of hardware.
then lets put it this way, Left 4 Dead is exclusive for Windows but is not a 360 exclisive
June 3rd, 2009
Cad i really don’t care, that video highlights the obvious errors with Natal
June 3rd, 2009
Bourne:
“that video highlights the obvious errors with Natal”
Like what?
June 3rd, 2009
You seriously believe a youtube (from who knows where or who) ‘proves’ something?
June 3rd, 2009
LMAO Happy have you actually visited it?!?!?
It was done at E3 you fool!
It proves that if you’re playing a game involving your whole body the camera has trouble reading basic movements. It inverted his limbs in a way that can only be described as comical.
June 3rd, 2009
“The best way to describe the PS3’s motion controller is like a black Wii-mote being used with Microsoft’s NATAL. Scream and cry all you want fanboys, but literally, that’s exactly how it operates.â€
June 3rd, 2009
No Bourne, my point was regardless of the original sourcing anyone could alter and add a little hint of delay to make it look worse than it was.
Besides, the guy was on a stage with stage lighting.
Unless they were using something other than the camera system (intended for us to use in the home) it probably would look less than ideal.
Anyone whos ever been involved with filming or videoing on stage knows this.
It takes professional multi-adjustable kit to do it really right.
Not the sort of relatively inexpensive stuff you’re going to be able to buy for your game console.
June 3rd, 2009
Yeah Roca, the Sony guy said so.

I think Dave got it right –
“However, it’s wholly underwhelming after Project Natal. Microsoft is pushing the boundaries more by ridding gamers of the need for any controller apart from their limbs while Sony is doing nothing more than developing a slightly enhanced version of the Wii Remote.”
June 3rd, 2009
You’ve gotta be crapping me Happy. You’re that blinded by fanboyism to ignore the truth? It’s right there infront of your eyes!!
Step down Harry sachz, Happy just took your crown for biggest 360 fanboy ever.
this is Microsofts e3 keynote (this year) it wasn’t altered, hacked or changed and you still want to say someone did fiddle with it?!
youtube.com/watch?v=GH_gDreIdcM&feature=related
Lol just accept it’s flawed. He says “Ever wondered what the bottom of an avatars shoe looks like…. BAM” and at that point it goes insane.
June 3rd, 2009
omg, 360 owers are ridiculous.
you guys are all excited about Natal (even the name sounds dumb) because there werent any news about New games or new IP other than Metal Gear Rising (which is also coming to the PS3). Pretty sad huh.
as for the ppl who own a PS3, we got FF7, Uncharted 2 multiplayer and Movies/TV shows from more than 25 movie studios and a PSN application (like iTunes). ALL that was up and running the same as Sony’s Press conference. The we got Final Fantasy 14, Agent, ModNation Racers, God of War, MAG, Gran Turismo 5 and more.
M$ barely showed gameplay footage of its games.
Sony showed gameplay footage for most of its games including: God of War, MAG, ModNation Racers, the Wand, Uncharted 2 and more.
June 3rd, 2009
Bourne, you saw a prototype on a stage.
Settle yourself pettle.
Roca, how is life in that other world you inhabit?
June 3rd, 2009
Microsoft: “Forza 3 is the Champion the Gen in the Racing Genre with over 400 cars running at 720p and 60 FPS”
A day later….
Sony: “Gran Turismo PSP with feature over 800 cars running at 60 FPS” (a kick in the butt to M$)
Later that Day….
Gran Turisom 5 (PS3) will run at 1080p and 60 FPS, and will also Feature Nascar, Pitts, Off-Road Racing, real time car-damage and more. (a slap in the face to M$, Forza 3 and everybody in between)
June 3rd, 2009
Life is good anywhere as long I keep getting great games for my console and not just sequels
June 3rd, 2009
@Bourne, I too saw the BAM! moment, and thought it was hilarious.
However! That kind of stuff is probably going to go hand in hand with ‘motion’ gaming for a looong time. Just as voice recognition doesn’t ‘always’ work because your machine is really making calculated ‘guesses’ about what you’re saying or doing (based on alot of data, but still, one thing can throw it).
Its still early days too, they said they were sending out dev kits, they didn’t really say it was the polished final product(did they?) and there’s still a fair few months to iron out the bugs and what not.
Funny thing is, now Tony Hawk is pimping his board saying that Natal wasn’t accurate enough for him (and of course that without a board it would be kinda odd because you couldn’t do kick flips or watever you skateboarders do
)
He’s like ‘ignore teh natal!!!! buy ma boaaarrrdd!’
And that is not meant as a dig at Natal, just find it funny that the guy is like ‘hey, its not as good for skateboarding as OUR board!!!!’ in order to make sure his product sells…

Barnabe,
Got an invitation to the Uncharted multiplayer beta. I’ll be downloading it in about an hour and a half, but won’t get to try it out til much later.
-Arvis
June 3rd, 2009
So i’m not too sure the advantages of Natal. i mean there’s a kotaku report on how he used it to drive on Burnout which is cool. But anything over 15 minutes is going to knacker you out and as someone pointed out, having something like this
amazon.co.uk/Xbox-360-Wireless-Wheel/dp/B00128WLGK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1244044172&sr=8-1
Is much more enjoyable than driving with an invisible wheel.

lock_down – you, sir, are clueless.
i have always said a 360 game is exclusive if its not on any other CONSOLE. pc do not count as they are vastly different types of gaming from consoles.
ROCA – Forza 3 has set the new benchmark in collisions with cars now going airborne. GT 5 won’t be able to handle this type of collision mechanics. sorry. more “bumpercar physics” (ala Gamespot) for you. Congrats on your 800 cars tho. you must be so proud to be moving from 45 identical nissan skylines as in GT4 to 70 identical Nissan Skylines surely to be in GT5. pwned by TEH REDUNANCY!!!! lucky you….lol….
let’s see if kaz can make all 800 cars damageable. who wants to be the first ps3 fanboy to promise he does? c’mon…. don’t be shy….
June 3rd, 2009
Arvis did you have to suck some Sony dick to get in?! How the hell did you manage that!?
June 3rd, 2009
Kev GT5 psp won’t have damageable cars, no-one ever said it would. Only the PS3 version will have that. And there will probably be less than 800 cars in the PS3 one.
June 3rd, 2009
Kev GT5 psp won’t have damageable cars, no-one ever said it would. Only the PS3 version will have that. And there will probably be less than 800 cars in the PS3 one.

I think I like the ‘Sony Wand’ better. it just seems more easier to use. and a lot more fun.
June 3rd, 2009
“No Roca your wrong. Just like 360 is a Platform so is Games for Windows. See for yourself.”
No CAD you are wrong. Just because it says “Games for Windows” doesn’t mean you have to use Windows…tell that to the people who get games to run on Linux/Macs etcc…thats besides the point tho.
The bottom line is, if you can get a game OTHER than a 360, it is NOT EXCLUSIVE…AGAIN for you CAD, IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PURCHASE A MS 360 TO PLAY X GAME, it is NOT exclusive…
That means, Halo/Gears/Fable/Left4Dead/Mass Effect…etc…i was able to enjoy those games without having to punish myself through countless RRODs…my PC works better and is more reliably built ( as in i built it myself, much better than the 360 manufacturers)
Now, show me and tell me where ELSE i can play the following: Uncharted/Motorstorm/Heavenly Sword/Resistance/Killzone/Ratchet and Clank..etc…thats right NO WHERE ELSE.. You have to actually BUY A PS3 SYSTEM TO PLAY THOSE games…
And that right there is the difference…if you don’t see that…theres no point in arguing with a blind fanboy…
June 3rd, 2009
I know the glitch you guys are talking about. Yeah it was funny when the dued said “have you ever seen the bottom of an avtars shoe” and the the avtar had a hard time mimicking the motion. That’s cool to laugh at but it’s only an Avtar and I’m sure it will be better. As for actual game play, there was nothing to laugh about there. It was more like WOW I can’t believe what I’m seeing. Microsoft has taken Motion sensing to the next level.
June 3rd, 2009
OK Jojo
If a game droped for the PS3 and the same game was made for the PS2 what would you call that given that it’s the same owner?
June 3rd, 2009
CAD, which game would that be?
The thing is, when you have a “Games for Windows” games, you don’t HAVE to be running windows to run it…..its been done like that before….what do you say about that?…
June 3rd, 2009
Motion sensing sounds like Home. From time to time it’s fun to partake (case in point when me Royzy and Spidey dog got together for bowling once) But only in short amount of time and in a few weeks you’ll just get tired of it.
June 3rd, 2009
also. when going from 360 to PC, you can most likely be getting a graphically BETTER experience, depending on your rig, mine, it is definitely an upgrade…whereas if you go from PS3 to PS2….its a “lesser” experience, IF that were to be the case….
June 3rd, 2009

so what version of ff is on both consoles??
June 3rd, 2009
If a game appears on the 360 and the PC it is not exclusive.
If it appears on the ps3 and the pc it is exclusive.

jk.
Anyway. Games that aren’t console exclsuive are categorized as such. I’m not really sure what the argument is. Carlb seems to be trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill, Which in itself is absolutely rediculous as he has said in the past he doesnt have a game pc so all his gaming is done on a console. I guess he considers FF14 an exclusive.
The ps3 to ps2 games being exclusive..im not sure about. does not happen often with games that aren’t on annual iterations.
Id say that early on in the 360′s lifetime there were many games made for it that also came out on the ps2, but xbots love to play that up in the exclusive category.

FF14 should be going to the 360 as well. They have a following with ff11 already so it kind of makes sense for it to also appear there.

but still Sony wouldn’t have brought it up in there show if they knew Square was going to come out and say this the very next day… M$ probably cornered them in a room and started throwing money at them… pathetic.
June 3rd, 2009
If FF14 goes to the 360, Sony are gonna look like idiots…Tretton was at pains to say PS3 is the only console.
June 3rd, 2009
I think if they could allow players on PS3 to play with LIVE, then it’s really a no-brainer. As much as I was pleased to hear it was coming out on PS3, I think it would also be good to widen the possible user-base.
June 3rd, 2009
true, the whole thing seems fishy to me though. Did Sony jump the gun, or did M$ approach Square in the last 24 hours?
June 3rd, 2009
“Did they have people in after the show checking out the new stuff and playing with it (Sony wands)?”
That is a good question and point Happy… I haven’t seen anything on that.
“Carlb seems to be trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill”
Maybe, It’s just my opinion (and Mike’s it seems) that I really do think FFXIV was the biggest news of the show. I was only bringing it up the PC version because it had not been mentioned anywhere here before phranc, and I did say it had a good chance to sell better on PS3 than PC or vice versa. But you are right, I do consider FFXIV a console exclusive to PS3, which is up in the air right now as to whether it is only a timed exclusive or not.
Even if it is only a timed exclusive (TE) though, it would mean a lot more console purchases for PS3 vice 360 for FF fans, especially considering FFVII (TE?), vs XIII (TE?), and the PSP games coming. For an example of the potential difference in sales, one can just look at the sales of past timed exclusives and see the advantage they can bring.
Either way, I think FFXIII will be great, and XIV a big draw. As for the tech, both the wands and Natal do things that look pretty amazing compared to past tech, but I may not be as knowledgeable or experienced (never owned a console cam) in these things as Mike.
I think Bourne made the best point here in that the tech could be potentially tiring for long gaming sessions.
June 3rd, 2009
Well okay, I don’t think Microsoft will let that go if they have a reasonable choice in the matter.
June 3rd, 2009
Sweet… cross-platform connection on FFXIV.
June 3rd, 2009
Carl – a PS one game (7) will never appear on XBL.
June 3rd, 2009
“If FF14 goes to the 360, Sony are gonna look like idiots…Tretton was at pains to say PS3 is the only console.”
Yep.
June 3rd, 2009
Q: I’ve been seeing information that the title is free to play, is this true?
A: No pricing has been decided at this time. It is still TBD.
… and that’s the end. Well done square. I now officially hate you again.
June 3rd, 2009
Barnabe, I remember when PS2 owners were saying Final Fantasy would never appear on a Microsoft console. Never say never.
June 3rd, 2009
Wasn’t 7-9 published by Sony at the time?
June 3rd, 2009
“Carl – a PS one game (7) will never appear on XBL.”
Why is that? Because they said it was “exclusive”? Lol.
June 3rd, 2009
The game boot up to the PS logo… then the familiar… “Presented by Sony Computer Entertainment”… appears. Not going to XBL.
June 3rd, 2009
Publishing rights expire.
June 3rd, 2009
also the game wouldn’t meet M$’s strict graphical standards for XBL.
June 3rd, 2009
Let’s put it this way: can you play FF1 and up on PS1/2? Ever wonder why that is?
June 3rd, 2009
I remember when Xbox owners were saying…er…oh, yeah, they didn’t have anything to say because they never had any games for Sony to take did they….
June 3rd, 2009
What are the graphical standards for XBL? Robotron looks the same as it did when I first saw it. Shadow Complex looks pretty sweet for an XBL game…
June 3rd, 2009
Nintendo didn’t publish 1 & 2 (or any for that matter) though.
I will say this though… knowing Square Enix… it could be possible.
June 3rd, 2009
knowing any third party likes to make money makes it possible.
June 3rd, 2009
Well that settles it.. not buying Dissidia or Kingdom Hearts for PSP. I’ll steal them thank you very much.
June 3rd, 2009
Barnabe, why not just let the 360 bootleggers do the stealing? That’ll send more of a “message,” I would think…
-Arvis

THIEF THIEF THIEF
*points*
Who cares what it comes out for anywhoos. I do feel bad for Tretton tho, he could come out of this with some egg on his face.
June 3rd, 2009
Okay, so you like Thief games, we get it SW….
Incidentally, “Thi4f”…what the hell is all that about? It somehow manages to be worse than “Driv3r”, which a truly unique achievement.
June 3rd, 2009
Why would Sony come out and say that FFXIV was exclusive unless they weren’t 100% confident.
I think square have really fucked sony over! Microsoft must be loving this!
Why would square settle for a console that’s getting beat by it’s predecessor anyway lol
June 3rd, 2009
You are all pissing me off. Except for SW.
June 3rd, 2009
I am stuck on a bit in The Last Remnant that is beginning to annoy me. I have to fight this big round ‘hell’ thing which has about 5 unions helping it out. I can’t kill it, have tried a few different tactics but none of them have worked. Apart from going out and leveling up, I am out of ideas. Anyone ever played it and have beaten this monster?
June 3rd, 2009
Is anybody here going to get the PSPGo?
June 3rd, 2009
Nah, handheld gaming isn’t something I am really into. I don’t really have time for it either.
June 3rd, 2009
Yes, I don’t really see a compelling reason to get it over my existing PSP (kind of like why I didn’t get a DSi yet). Handhelds are definitely a standby, but I truly believe a no brainer for the Go would be to incorporate trophies.
Overall, I think Sony’s show would have had a lot more massive effect if over half of the information hadn’t been released/leaked already.
June 4th, 2009
carlB:
You really have a PSP cool to know and the Sony leaked the PSP Go. Sony’s show was awesome my favorite part was Gran Turismo 5 with NASCAR.
I started playing UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves beta last night it was full of people extremely fun. If you still don’t have a PS3 at least try this game some how is really awesome everyone is anxious to buy it the Co-Op and online feels so smooth you will love this game. I’m almost level 11 i got almost $80,000 on UNCHARTED 2 beta.
CON:
Just shut up man no cares and Square-Enix didn’t screw Sony.

Kev keeps thing Forza is Better than Gran Turismo. He even said there are 45 Nissan Skyline in GT5:P, I have the game Kev and there is just Nissan GTR (thats what they call it now).
Just take at look at this
Forza 3
- Straight Track Racing
- over 400 Cars
- 720p/60FPS
- Car Damage/ fliping cars
Gran Turismo 5
-Track Racing, Off-Road Racing, NASCAR, Time traills, Drift and more.
- If the PSP is going to have over 800, GT5 is going to have over 1000
-1080p/60FPS
-Real Time car damage.
June 4th, 2009
Roca.:
Forza Motorsport 3 is no match for the real driving simulator Gran Turismo 5.
Gran Turismo 5 is love by car companies that’s why companies are release the cars first on Gran Turismo before selling them Polyphony Digital is run by a visionary car enthusiastic.
Forza MotorSport 3 will never out sell Gran Turismo 5.
June 4th, 2009
“- If the PSP is going to have over 800, GT5 is going to have over 1000″
I understand your logic here, but you’re actually most likely going to be wrong on this one. Because GT5 will have a MASSIVE amount of detail for each car, it will probably have less total cars than the PSP GT.
-Arvis
June 4th, 2009
Arvis,
that is why Polyphony has been working on it since a lilttle after GT4 was released.
and with 3 different type of racing style we should expect more cars.
June 4th, 2009
Roca – I said “as in GT4″… please learn to read, tool.
Ivan – why do you still insist on making useless predictions? you’re never right.
for a year, you’ve been babbling and SWEARING no Metal Gear game would EVER come to the 360… and yet….he one comes….
you’re predictions are as useless as your posts. seriously.
June 4th, 2009
“for a year, you’ve been babbling and SWEARING no Metal Gear game would EVER come to the 360… and yet….he one comes….”
but not Metal Gear Solid. and Certantly not any game made by Kojima
June 4th, 2009
ROCA – Metal Gear Rising is coming to the 360. introduced by Hideo Kojima at E3. he did not say others were making it.
why hide behind the Roca tag? we know it’s you, Ivan.
June 4th, 2009
KOJIMA IS NOT WORKING ON METAL GEAR RISING. accept the truth and move on. jeesh
*Why hide behind M$’s balls?**
June 4th, 2009
Kev, Kojima productions is making Rising – yes. However, Kojima is not writing, producing, or directing it. He is with the PSP version (which is a true sequel/prequel). Go look it up if you don’t believe me.
Also isn’t it funny that the PSP version of GT has more cars than Forza? The PSP version also runs at the same frame rate lol. Forza is the Mario Kart of racing sims.
June 4th, 2009
Barnabe: “Forza is the Mario Kart of racing sims.”
jajajaja
June 4th, 2009
lets give Kev a break as Forza is the only option he has.
June 4th, 2009
Barnabe Jones:
“isn’t it funny that the PSP version of GT has more cars than Forza?”
No.
Mere numbers (ie probably different colours of the same thing) are pretty meaningless to the quality of the game play.
It’#s mere trinkets for the gullible who imagine that sort of fluff is what makes for a great game.
400 cars or 800 cars, seriously, who really cares when it goes over 100?
June 4th, 2009
“Mere numbers (ie probably different colours of the same thing) are pretty meaningless to the quality of the game play.”
why would bother and make a stupid comment like this.
We all know that in Gran Turismo you buy ur car first and then choose your color.
and FYI Gran Turismo is second to NONE in quality so dont even go there.
June 4th, 2009
Yes, very nice Roca/Ivan, absolutely lovely.
Also hilariously funny coming from you,
the person who spammed the boards with your 800 cars PSP BS.
June 4th, 2009
if you dont know what ur talking about, PLEASE dont say anything at all.
that goes to Happy and his boyfriend Kev:
making stuff up like:
“800 cars (ie probably different colours of the same thing) “
June 4th, 2009
Ivan, really we know you are roca now, give up the act.
June 4th, 2009
“400 cars or 800 cars, seriously, who really cares when it goes over 100?”
I don’t think any real car enthusiast would agree with that sentiment. Large car selection is very important, especially when playing with other people. One of the most fun 2-player races I ever had was against a girl I was dating. She was in a Toyota Supra, and I chose a Volvo S60 sport sedan, giving her a bit of an advantage to make up for her lack of experience with the game. We did two laps around the Nurburgring that took 20 minutes, and we finished less than 2 seconds apart. A thrilling, competitive race. And it never would have happened had we not found these two particular cars that fit our respective play styles so well. Not to mention that one of the most appealing aspects of racing sims is tricking out a virtual version of a car you own in real life.
So yes, a large selection of cars is absolutely vital.
That being said, I don’t think comparing 400 or 800 cars is that big a deal, depending on what you want, or what cars they are.
-Arvis
June 4th, 2009
’400 cars or 800 cars, seriously, who really cares when it goes over 100?’
The same people who enjoy playing borin’ old car sim games
June 4th, 2009
Carlb really we know you are Michael Jackson give up the act, there aint no lil kids for you here
June 4th, 2009
I think that confirms it: Roca is not actually iVan.
-Arvis
June 4th, 2009
“will feature the largest diverse car roster in a Gran Turismo game to-date, a full NASCAR mode that accurately reflects the car models, themes and physics, a W2C off-road circuit with fully functional rally cars, dynamic realtime damage, weather effects and pit crews. I don’t think I need to say much more than that but there is actually more. The game will now feature enhanced online functionality and all the classic prototype, production and sports cars that made the game famous in the first place. “
June 4th, 2009
SW:
“The same people who enjoy playing borin’ old car sim games”
You really think that’s the important part of the game SW?
Do you honestly think it makes much odds once you get to the point of 400 cars or is 800 ‘essential’ and ‘better’?
What if the difference is mostly colour schemes and little else?
Personally I think not.
Frankly from what I’ve seen they’re all much of a muchness and usually indulge in the most anal detail to differentiate themselves.
Boring, IMHO.
I like a good racer myself (I’m enjoying PGR4 at the mo) but I do find the OTT nonsense a tad ridiculous (suspension settings, ffs).
But I’m honest enough to admit that my PGR4 is little different to the racers on my mates PS3,
Mountains & molehills.
June 4th, 2009
I’m confused, did you post a rebuttle or agree with me? (I’m personally voting for option no. 2)
June 4th, 2009
“Do you honestly think it makes much odds once you get to the point of 400 cars or is 800 ‘essential’ and ‘better’?”
It really depends on what cars you’re looking for. Sometimes, a player will pick a game just because there’s ONE particular car in one game, and not the other. Or one particular car company, etc.
-Arvis

No, roca isn’t Ivan. He’s just another troll like him, difference is that he can string a sentence together, something that Ivan struggles with.
Seriously, just don’t respond to him, we don’t need people like him muddying the waters here. At least the Ivan bot can be fun, he’s just a pain in the arse.

LMFAO Wow LoL… The king of troll is trying to get friends pathetic this is a PlayStation site. The jealous (harry sachz) are troublesome to others, but a torment to themselves.

Thou neither knowest thine ar$e from an hole in the ground.
Jezz the cheek of you, calling someone else here a troll!?

Roca, close but no cigar, it’s actually Weird Al: “just eat it”. Seriously though, sorry for the confusion.

What exactly am I jealous about, fallen angel?
June 5th, 2009

Look at Harry with a Haze Cover art on his Picture. That Game sucks but if it was out for the 360 it would have been one of the best game for the 360. Haze is at the 360 level for most games

OK,
I am starting the ‘get a room for Ivan and Roca’ Fund.
We’re going to be putting them up at the Grand Pacific in Victoria, BC. We also need lube money.
A enough money for a Horse and Carriage ride.
Who’s with me?!

I don’t know, SW. I’d hate to see what would happen if they bred. The pedigree wouldn’t be all that flash.

““isn’t it funny that the PSP version of GT has more cars than Forza?â€
No.”
hehehe, that me chuckle there, happy
The sheer curtness of it was too good.

Arvis – That’s one of the weakest excuses you’ve ever come up with for hyping Gran Turismo.
I’ve known a lot of GT fans, myself included, and can safely say I’ve never seen one who bought the games for ONE car. Your theory really loses steam when you consider gamers had no idea what cars are in the game until they bought it.
One car alone will not get you through all the race classes you need to progress, either.
Finally, IF someone were to buy the game for ONE car, that would make the remaining 799 cars complete and useless overkill. The amount of cars does not make a sim better than an another. Physics and calculations are paramount in sims. Contrary to what you, Ivan and the other sony leg humpers want us to believe.
GT was great in it’s day but has been surpassed by the Forza franchise, which is bordering on PC quality simulation. The needless inclusion of many, many cars that most won’t use does not make for a great sim. Just meaningless bragging rights.
GT had “photorealism†on it’s side with non-deformable car models, but with Forza 3’s new graphics engine, it appears GT has lost that leg up as well.

Yeah, Forza can’t have too many cars can it, they’ve got to keep the DVD numbers down after all haven’t they, haha…
