Clarification on Final Fantasy XIV exclusivity – Sony re-confirms for PS3
Sony created a big splash at E3 this year with the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV. What created even a bigger stir was the announcement that the game would be PS3 exclusive. However, Square Enix created some confusion the next day when the company talked about the exclusivity around Final Fantasy XIV. Sony has recently re-confirmed that the game is a PS3 exclusive.
Jack Tretton, President and CEO of SCEA jokingly stated that at least the news of Final Fantasy XIV was not leaked to the press. However, the news was leaked as a handful of journalists were expecting Square Enix to announce the game the next day on both the PS3 and PC.
However, after Tretton surprisingly announced that FFXIV would be PS3 exclusive during the Sony press conference, there was some confusion within the press. Many of the journalists who knew about FFXIV’s existence were expecting it to be on the PC as well. However, Sony’s announcement raised the question if the company was able to completely secure FFXIV as an exclusive from all platforms including the PC.
This confusion grew until the next day and made its way to the attention of Shinji Hashimoto, Senior VP of Square Enix. Speaking through the translator he stated that he wanted to clarify the confusion over the PS3 exclusivity, indicating that it will indeed be coming to the PC as well.
In a separate statement right after that he indicated that the publisher is looking at different platforms including the Xbox 360. Since Jack Tretton announced FFXIV as a PS3 exclusive from a console perspective, Hashimoto-san wanted to clarify that it will still come to the PC.
It was a bit confusing with the translators and some sites running these two statements together. However, Kotaku has also tried to clarify this confusion as well here.
I recently received a press release from Sony through the usual MDS PR News Wire where near the bottom it states:

I suppose the big question that needs to be asked to Tretton and Hashimoto-san is what is their definition of exclusive? I have reached out to Sony’s PR department for a response. I will post the company’s response as soon as I receive it.

“I suppose the big question that needs to be asked to Tretton and Hashimoto-san is what is their definition of exclusive?”
That would probably depend on how much money Microsoft is willing to give SE. It could wind up that the only thing seeing any exclusivity was the announcement. Which technically only lasted a day before SE said they were “considering Microsoft hardware” as well (without any mention of timed exclusivity).
As it stands now, the PC specs are yet to be released, so it may be a good reason for me to get a good gaming laptop/pc if it doesn’t come to 360. It’s about time for me to upgrade my laptop anyway.

That was as clear as mud.

dont care, JUST BRING IT OUT ALREADY!!!

I’m guessing that “exclusive” means, that at the moment it’s exclusive. If they “are looking into the 360″, I’m not sure why they wouldn’t just port it.
I know that FF XI is still insanely popular in Japan, maybe that might have something to do with it. I’ll bet it will end up PS3, PC, and 360 though. If the game isn’t free I’m probably going to pass.

This game doesnt look like an MMO, since the trailer shows the has a Story, it showed the main character and it mentioned its name too.
They SE said that the game is an “online game” but its going to play like “you traditional Final Fantasy”
In conclusion I think the game will not be an MMO it will probably has Co-Op like RE5, so you can beat the story with your friends. mayb 4 to 8 players.

“it may be a good reason for me to get a good gaming laptop/pc if it doesn’t come to 360.”
Carl, why not save yourself the money & hassle and just get a PS3? That way you can get in on XIIIversus, as well as Agent, God of War, and Gran Turismo goodness (none of which you could play on your PC/laptop).
Seems like a much smarter move for a gamer of your needs, is all.

Even *I* know he’s waiting for PS2 BC
June 8th, 2009
Hmmm… I admit, it’s worth waiting for (just started re-playing FFXII this weekend).
However, if he’s really interested in Final Fantasy, he should have plenty keeping him busy. With XIII, XIV online, and Versus XIII, when is he going to play PS2 games?

Doesn’t amazon still have the MGS PS3 bundles? Those are backwards compatible, right? Plus he’ll get MGS4 and the gun gray system and controller.
See Carl, there is no excuse. Get the VISA card ready.

I think I figured it out. Roca is Ivan’s big brother. He’s got the same clouded ideas as Ivan, but he can spell better.
@ Chris,
Perhaps he wants a gaming PC to play games that are exclusive to PC?

I think there is usually a sweet spot (price wise) to get the second console in a generation, and I believe this fall may be it for me to get a PS3, as there is a good chance it will be half the price it was at launch.
As SW said, I also want to still be able to play my PS2 games. While the MGS bundle is PS2 BC it is still $500, which doesn’t really do it for me as I would essentially be paying $125 for each of the four games that really interest me beyond multiplatform titles which I can already play.
Neither does blu-ray really do it for me as the 360 will have 1080p downloads and streaming available later this year. So I think I can afford to wait. The games will still be there by the time I get around to them, if ever. Beside, I am having a hard enough time getting through all the good 360 games available already (including multiplats).

Even if I had a PS3, I wouldn’t add you as a friend.
June 9th, 2009
Ivan, I’m pretty sure they are going to have a hot redesign and yet another price drop, so I think I’ll wait for it and see then. I would be all over it if I was a PS3 exclusive fan, but I already made an investment in 2005, and it has done well by me for all these years with no real need to supplement. I’ll definitely check send a message your way if I get one though, and thanks for the invite.
(now playing Lost Odyssey)

Bluray does alot for gaming as EA stated that they have MAX OUT the potential of the 360, but they are even half way of the PS3 full potantial. (i cant get the link because its block at my job but look it up. it happend like a day ago)

Roca,
Can your dick touch your arse? Good, go fuck yourself, troll.

“if you dont have anything good to say…make urself a favor and dont say anything at all.”
Roca, you should take your own advice. Quit starting arguments, please.

*LAUGHS* Touche, salesman. Touche.
I stand by my point, though. By the time FFXIV actually is released, the PS3 should be the best option for you (as opposed to PC).

Roca, I read that too and I believe what the EA rep says, but it (only in my opinion) really means nothing until they prove it in an actual game that has been released. That may be later this year before we really see a huge difference in games, but I believe it may not be until late next year or even afterwards.
Arvis, I think you might be right, just for the sheer fact that I enjoy console gaming more as opposed to pc gaming. It should have both the redesign and price drop by then.
June 9th, 2009
Can my tits touch my pussy? Wow, good one!
Ivan, at least we agree on something, I think you’re an idiot and would never add you to my friends list.
June 9th, 2009
I dont really understand what he meant by exclusive either? They said the same about FFXI not ever going to the 360 but it did. SE also said at the conference that the possibilities are going to be there for FFXIV reaching the 360.
My only guess is that they are rushing to get these games out on PS3 and PC first because they are the 2 most popular platforms in Japan right now and 360 doesnt seel great there. I hope it does go to 360 because it brings more FFXI hardcore people to the game. I am going to buy a PS3 now just for FFXIV.

Wow i didn’t mean to be that rude but…
People you can get a PS3 brand new from eBay or ioffer for just $300 the 40GB PS3 you gotta look fast.
June 10th, 2009
Ebay… imo the real bidding usually takes place about 1 day to 5 minutes before the end of the auction and hikes the price up significantly. That plus you don’t know what you are getting unless the seller has a really high rep. Price still gets hiked and you may wind up saving $10 to $50 if you are lucky, tack on the shipping and that takes care of a good portion of what you just saved.
June 10th, 2009
Apology accepted, iVan.
Seriously, I would get a PS3 if they dropped sub $300 here in Aus. I don’t think I would buy one from Ebay, I don’t trust Australia Post will handle it with care.
June 10th, 2009
If i was a billionaire i swear i will give PS3 for free by doing contest and sweepstakes. Or i will sell PS3 at a low price. Even a special Xbox 360 with the blades.
