Study: Gamers don’t care about Halo or Milo but care about Alan Wake and Crackdown 2
An interesting study reveals the popularity of the announcements at Microsoft’s press conference at E3 2009. The study was conducted via one of the biggest hardcore gaming forums around. It really is interesting to see the discrepancy between the hype created by the media versus the reaction of a sample pool of actual consumers.
The study was conducted by BitMob (via Kotaku), where Andrew Hiscock painstakingly used NeoGaf as his sample pool to conduct the empirical study of gathering negative and positive reactions. As many of you may already know, NeoGaf is the largest hardcore gamer forum out there. Big name studios such as Seed and Valve have actually jumped on NeoGaf to announce games. Developers such as Denis Dyack have been banned from NeoGaf as well.
Andrew’s methodology and abstract can be found here where he conducted the study for Nintendo initially. I really have to hand it to Andrew for conducting such a fascinating study as it really shows the reaction of a sample pool of hardcore gamers compared to the media hype.

In the Microsoft E3 press conference analysis, Andrew points out that according to his study the highest points of the conference were during Alan Wake and then Crackdown 2. There is no denying it as these two were the games I was most excited to hear about during the conference.
Andrew indicates that Left 4 Dead 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction took a drop in popularity after Crackdown 2. Forza 3 received modest reaction and the two Halo games, ODST and Reach received negative reaction.
Andrew states:
There was a remarkable amount of cynicism when Halo: Reach was announced, probably due to its position in the presentation following ODST (many contributors to the thread criticized Microsoft for “milking the franchise”).
Last.fm, Netflix, and Live Party received fairly positive reaction. I was actually interested in the Last.fm and Live Party announcements myself. Facebook and Twitter received negative reaction as I suspected that it would. The announcement of MGS: Rising received a decent spike in positive reaction and the reveal of Natal received the majority of the negative reaction. Milo also received negative reaction from hardcore gamers.
It seems like most of the hardcore gamers did not care for the Natal and Milo stuff, which I honestly was not all that excited for either. I did comment previously that I would rather have preferred Microsoft to show some Mass Effect 2 gameplay rather than the Natal segment.
Crackdown was a sleeper hit when it first came out. Most gamers purchased it in hopes of getting in on the Halo beta but found the game to be extremely fun. Interestingly this is the exact same strategy Sony is using for inFAMOUS, which is also extremely fun.
If you recall on the day of the E3 press conference, I stated that Alan Wake was the best announcement of Microsoft’s showing. It seems like hardcore gamers think alike. Take a look at the graph and see if your reaction lines up with the majority of the hardcore gamers out there. Andrew is currently working on a similar study for Sony’s press conference.

I thought Splinter Cell looked great. I never played crackdown, but the brief trailer didn’t really show me too much, so I’m not sure what to think.
Alan Wake looked pretty good, but I wasn’t blown away with what I saw either.
I’m thrilled to see that Halo is waning in popularity. Halo STD is after all just a 3 hour expansion sold at full price. Let’s just hope that the sales figures reflect that.

Yeah, I have really enjoyed some Xbox PC ports on my computer. I use a ps2 DualShock with a usb converter (originally bought for ps3) so I don’t have to put up with the xbox controller.
But since I already have a decent gaming rig, it is easy. You can’t play those games on a 200 dollar computer (arcade price for comparison). I won’t lump the PC versions with the 360 because of this.
I returned my borrowed 360 a few weeks ago. I maybe played it twice, as the comparison between the xbox and pc versions of TLR and Fable2 pushed me away from the console: the pc played FAR better for both titles. (and I hate the 360 controller… a decade of playstation controllers is a hard sensation to break)

I look at it slightly different. I have a PC anyway and I upgrade it every three years. Since I have it anyway I don’t really consider it an additional expense for the sake of gaming. The gaming is the added bonus.
I have the 360 controller for it. I really don’t mind the controller for other games other than fighting games.

So what makes the PC better other then visuals? Absolutely nothing!! It’s the same game no matter how you wanna look at it. I find it facinating that at the heart of it all it shows that you really do covet our games. That’s OK you don’t have to buy a 360 to play them but it shows where you heart really is. As for controls, that cheap PS3 controller is a joke. If you prefer to grip rather then craddel and prefer to use R1 & R2 over your trigger like all the developers use because they know the Triggers that Sony tried to copy are shit then sure stick with that lame controller. The only thing about the 360 controller that sucks is the D-Pad. Ohter then that it’s quite perfect. Even the Keyboard attachement makes more sence then what the PS3 tried to copy. Good effort though. I have a few questions though. So do you just buy another controller when the Battery is fried. It’s like $70 for a new controller and how long does it last? Also have they extended the length of the recharge cable yet because that cable was short. At least the 360 controller sells for the same price ($70) and comes with a battery and recharge cable and a replacement battery is $20. That’s better then replacing the whole controller for $70. Well I guess it’s all a matter of opinion.

Thats true in most cases, and sometimes PC ports are actually worse.
I think that depending on the game, if you can get away with a mouse, then alot of PC gamers prefer it. For example, I would prefer Fable with a mouse because it allows me to turn around very quickly, slowly, but more importantly I can be very very precise (yes i suck with analogue sticks). Because as good as analogue sticks are, they usually only build a few levels on sensitivity into ‘em. The keyboard also gives me over 30 keys that I can bind.
Of course there are certain games you really NEED a gamepad (fighters etc.) in which case I’d rather be on the couch with my 360/ps3.
Anywhoos, its personal pref. anyway, of course.

Back to the controllers. The recharge time and how often. Well this is how i do it. I play all week long, without even so much as connecting my controllers to charge at all. They just sit on my table. Usually, when they do need charging, i just connect them while i watch a stunning TRUE 1080p Bluray movie, by the way the Pirates Trilogy looks SIMPLY AWESOME on Bluray. By the time im done watching one of my movies, the controller is ready and charged for ALL of next week.

1. PC Gaming on a good rig nets you MUCH improved visuals, far beyond 1080p.
2. Online Gaming on the PC is FREE, no stupid subscription “service” to play online. $50 bucks saved
3. Depending on the type of game. Controller interface is far superior on PC. FPS being the most noticeable
4. No RROD.
5. No E74 Errors.
There are 5 good reasons for you, i can list more if you wish, but i don’t want to overload your feeble mind

yeah, i think when it comes to developer laziness, the PS3 is the prime example unfortunately..
BUT, on the bright side, at least developers are finally seeing the light of day and finally most are starting development on the PS3 rather than the 360, which results not only in better ports but overall better graphics on both consoles.
I think its because when you scale from an inferior machine to a superior one ( the 360 being inferior of course) its harder to try and code whats not there.
Whereas when you code from the superior to inferior ( the ps3 being superior) its easier to code as you essentially have all the code you need,and just fill in what you don’t.
Classic case of more(PS3) is better, whereas less(360) is not best. Its easier to code from the top to bottom…so to speak

SE has only developed one 360 game (Last Remnant) and have been Publishing the rest. The one title was done with the Unreal Engine 3 and not the toolset being used to develop ps3 and 360 games.

This was and interesting read. LOL a lot of people getting worked up over consoles is funny. I don’t care if Bill gates gets my money, I do care about buying a consol and wondering if it will boot every time I push the power button. I am too impatient to wait a week or two to get a consol back. That’s why I would pay a lot more to go pick something up in the store rather then wait for it if I ordered it online.

No I did not say that. I said using a keyboard is awkward. meaning that on the controller you have pre set buttons. On a computer keyboard you could be pushing any variation of buttons to excute a command. The mouse, if used for shooting, is simple for shooters because how easy is it to point and clik or hit the space bar or what ever. you don’t have to develope precision to shoot someone. Way too easy. If you ever played a cross platform game you would understand that. Next time don’t twist my words and learn to comprehend.

Anyway, back onto topic, I am actually looking forward to seeing what Halo Reach is going to be like. Judging from the teaser trailer, they mentioned that they have spartans on the ground, meaning there are more than one. This game may answer a few questions lurking in the back of my mind like;
– How come Master Chief was the only spartan in the Halo games? Surely if he kicks arse constantly they would have made more.
- If there were more spartans out there, what happened to them?
- What was the covenant’s reasoning behind the attack on Earth?
- The whole religious thing that the covenant are into.
Hopefully we’ll get some answers in this new game.
On a semi related topic, I hope Gears 3 goes into more about the origins of the locust horde. I thought they were heading into that direction in Gears 2 when Fenix was at the lab, I was half expecting them to reveal that the Horde were a result of some sort of experiment on humans. Anyway, I guess they’re probably saving that for Gears 3.

I think you guys have got me all wrong because you making it seem as if I’m angry and getting pissed off when your comment cause me to get pissed off. I’m not trying to convince any of you to buy a 360 i could care less if you get it or not. Anyway the reason for my anger is because Yesterday Mike wrote some bullshit about Natal saying it was smoke and Mirrors and that Peter M basically lied about the Milo Experience and fooled people. Something that people on this site don’t like. So Mike basically deleted it. Then there was the ones saying to delete it and that I shlould provide a link. Yeah, I have really enjoyed some Xbox PC ports on my computer. I use a ps2 DualShock with a usb converter (originally bought for ps3) so I don’t have to put up with the xbox controller.
But since I already have a decent gaming rig, it is easy. You can’t play those games on a 200 dollar computer (arcade price for comparison). I won’t lump the PC versions with the 360 because of this.
I returned my borrowed 360 a few weeks ago. I maybe played it twice, as the comparison between the xbox and pc versions of TLR and Fable2 pushed me away from the console: the pc played FAR better for both titles. (and I hate the 360 controller… a decade of playstation controllers is a hard sensation to break)
(everything was good until the last stab which promped me to attack the PS3 controller)

Thats true in most cases, and sometimes PC ports are actually worse.
I think that depending on the game, if you can get away with a mouse, then alot of PC gamers prefer it. For example, I would prefer Fable with a mouse because it allows me to turn around very quickly, slowly, but more importantly I can be very very precise (yes i suck with analogue sticks). Because as good as analogue sticks are, they usually only build a few levels on sensitivity into ‘em. The keyboard also gives me over 30 keys that I can bind.
Of course there are certain games you really NEED a gamepad (fighters etc.) in which case I’d rather be on the couch with my 360/ps3.
Anywhoos, its personal pref. anyway, of course

Personally Harry I can’t wait for Halo ODST and Reach. The Halo series is amazing and yes I hope it answers a few questions and more spartan other then Master Cheif. Aparently he was the last one. Am I right about that? As for Gears oh they left a huge anticipation as to what happend to Marcus Father after they flooded the convenent. If you watched the sceen after the credits rolled Marcus father was asking what had they done. Also going back to Halo 3 they did the same thing at the end of the credits. Apparently depending on what level you finished the game there was different cinematics showing what was to come. I completed it on the second hardest level but I need to go back to see what the sceen shows if you complete it o the hardest level.

As much as i hate Halo i will buy this two no reason just want to try something new. I still have more PS3 games to try and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 i will be buying that for PS3 Xbox 360 and PC.
PS3 gives a new controller free after 5 years years or if the battery dies. I wish Microsoft they can afford to do that.

Why people say we are 360 haters;
FYI I had a 360 and while i had it, I bought over 37 games for it. I still have them in my collection.
I used to work for M$, i know what the company its all about.
I have been gaming since the Atari days. and to me having to console was no big deal, but after the PS3 came out I ended up playing it more than my 360. but my days with the 360 ended the day it died; right now I only need a PS3 since its exclusive are much better plus all my favorite PS1/PS2 franchises i can only get them on the PS3. I still keep my 360 HDD just in case i Have to buy one again; Also when my 360 I used to say “360 has the games; PS3 has the Power” but the truth right now is that the games are pretty even between the two but the PS3 still has the power.
Most of you PS3 hater will say you dont care about bluray/wifi/free XBL/PSN/blue tooth/etc….I used to say that too, but trust me they are nice to have. I know you dont need to have those things to play games; but they are very useful and make ur gaming experience much better.
Also i Always supported M$; I never bought a used 360 game. one day im going to get a 360 again; but thats going to be when there is a new game that i want to play that is only available on the 360, because right now sequel aint going to cut it for me.

What do i find funny? I find the fact that you claim you always have to defend the 360 on this site funny because the SOLE reason i started posting on this site was because of people like You, HappyHockum, CON, constantly posting PS3/Sony bashings. That is the sole reason I MYSELF started posting, was to DEFEND the PS3/Sony from the likes of yourselves, AND the articles around the time i posted were and can be seen as “anti-Sony”

IGN 7.5′d it like they 7.9′d Mario Kart 64.
FFS they called it ‘too choatic’, so I think they kind of missing the ‘pissed off walking tank in a city teaming with infected humans, monsters, and military personel’ part of the game…
Nothing more fun that rumbling with a ton of infected only to lay down some spikes and watch 10 if them get impaled. *sniffle*
It brings a tear to my eye everytime.
The missions are kinda linear, but its a sandbox ‘I am a walking tank and want to fucking destroy everything’ game. Thats is the point.

I did not direct my comment at you at all. I was not provoking you, but merely adding my 2c into the conversation.At no point did I say the Xbox controller was bad. All i said what that I hated it. I then qualified the statement by pointing out that a decade+ with the PS controller makes it hard for me to switch. I use my DS2 on my computer for ALL games that don’t support clean mouse/keyboard controls, not just 360 ports.
