EA confirms Mirror’s Edge 2 – More frustrating Parkour antics on way
It’s official. Mirror’s Edge 2 is on its way, with Electronic Arts confirming as much at E3. So I guess we’re all in for more of the most frustrating gameplay this side of Christendom. Oh joy of joys.
The first Mirror’s Edge was released last year to a mixed bag of reviews and review scores. Many people loved the style of gameplay, the innovative first-person perspective for what is essentially a 3D platformer, and the use of Parkour or Free-running as the means of transport. Not quite so favored were the storyline, the shortness of the game, and the frustration levels felt by most people playing the game. At least I assume it was most people. Maybe it was just those, me included, who have low patience thresholds.
I didn’t play the game until earlier this year and a few days of doing so led me to name Mirror’s Edge the “most frustrating game of all time.” I haven’t changed my mind on this either, and four months on still haven’t finished the game for fear of pulling my remaining hair out in the process.
Despite this experience, I’m quite pleased EA is moving forward with Mirror’s Edge 2. So few games companies, and EA is no exception, are taking risks with new IPs these days, especially if they are of a new genre or try to take things in a different direction than the norm. So Mirror’s Edge is a refreshing change.
Videogamer revealed EA had confirmed Mirror’s Edge 2 at E3 2009. Patrick Soderlund, Senior Vice President at EA Games Europe, revealed that developer DICE is now actively working on the sequel.
Mirror’s Edge was a risky move. It was a bold move, a very innovative and inspiring move. The game wasn’t perfect by any means. We would have liked the game to sell better even though the game has sold better than most people think.
You will see another Mirror’s Edge for sure. It’s just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I’m excited about what we do.
So it’s not if, but when. But what direction is EA going to head in for Mirror’s Edge 2? Will it be a direct sequel or a completely new story using the same basic concept, engine, and stylized gameplay? During a December 2008 conference call, EA CEO John Riccitiello first mentioned the possibility of a sequel by stating:
Mirror’s Edge is one that was very strongly reviewed, that one’s going to go forward. We’re probably going to look into some issues around the design to make sure strong IP is married with strong business.
What would the many fans of the first game like to see in Mirror’s Edge 2? Is it just a case of smoothing out the edges of what is essentially a great game, or does the sequel need a major restructuring to be the success the first game only partly was?

I personally don’t like this game and unless someting radical changes in the game play this game can just drop off the face of the planet.

I received the game as a gift… I beat it, but “the most frustrating game ever” is so true. I have no interest in the sequel. If I end up getting it as a gift, I am returning to the store.

ME should have been so much better than it was. The sheer amount of trial and error can put off even the most patient gamer. And I didn’t like the anime cutscenes, they would have been better in-engine.
