Myth or Fact: New Natal powered Xbox 360 system likely
Natal was Microsoft’s big announcement during the E3 2009 press conference. The concept of Natal was that the gamer would use their body as the controller instead of the gamepad. However, hints given by Microsoft execs and rumors around the Web point towards the possibility of the company releasing a new next gen console.
According to Joystiq, Microsoft VP Shane Kim stated that the launch of Natal would be more like a console launch than a simple peripheral launch. To me it still seems like a motion sensing camera with some spiffy applications developed for the Xbox 360. I suppose it’s not like Microsoft isn’t known for trying to sell concepts more than anything else.
Maybe I am a bit more skeptical of Natal because I believe in the physical controller more than moving around like the coined phrase – “Wii-tard.” I know some have dreamt of incorporating the motion of throwing a grenade into Call of Duty or opening a door combined with the Xbox 360 controller. It may sound cool to say something like this, but actually turning the door handles in Killzone 2 with the Sixaxis motion controls really didn’t do it for me on the PS3.
However, opinion aside, Microsoft wants to market this thing as a real contender to the Wii. I really don’t blame Microsoft for doing this as the casual market is being snatched up faster than Google has been snatching up search engine ads. One thing Microsoft hates doing is standing by while another monopolizes a market segment when it could be doing the exact same thing.
The rumor that Microsoft will launch a brand new Xbox model packaged with Natal in late 2010 is a bit more plausible than you may think. As Joystiq pointed out Microsoft is working to create a more compressed hardware scale. This means that Microsoft could be cranking out Wii-sized Xbox 360s with Natal packaged standard to compete directly with the Wii.
The company has also indicated in the past for the desire to focus more on financially scalable games where the profit far outstrips the cost of development. If anything, the way the rumors have been circulating it has the same characteristics as the Xbox 360 price drop ($199) rumors last August.
Myth or Fact: Fact. This rumor is more than likely to happen sometime next year.

Microsoft move things forward with Natal (I know its not out yet but watch what happens) and sony show their magic “The Intruder” Wand.
Like thats soooo last gen. Ha ha I actually hope now that sony doesn’t go bust as I would miss the comedy value they bring to battle.

Somebody has to fight the Nintendo corner. They are un-loved and un-appreciated by a gaming world that is scared of new ideas.
There is too much sony love going on for my liking. It’s a bit gay to honest. And very nauseating. But I suppose I didn’t realise how big the retro style gaming market was.

There is no such thing as too little sony love. But there is deffinatly too little Nintendo love. Nobody likes Nintendo. People forget where the roots of modern gaming started.
Anyhoo, I hope Microsoft do bring out another/next gen console next year. I can’t see it mind as its not like its losing out to the ps4th in sales. But I think it will put the cat amongst the pigeons a bit.
The only thing is will it be a 360 with bolt ons or will it be a true next gen iteration of the Xbox? Have Microsoft clawed there investment back from the 360 yet? Even the bottomless pit of money that is Microsoft would maybe see it as too soon to bring out. But then again, how long has the 360 been out for now? Will it be 5 years next year?
I do think it will be another gen or so before full motion control hits its stride and becomes perfectly accurate. But either way its better than stabbing at buttons.

Mike, seriously, why are you quoting an article that itself is based on a 3rd generation quote from Kotaku? And the issue with the new console is based on speculation by the guys at 1up and little else. That is just sloppy journalism.
Personally I think the 1up guys are probably not far off the mark, although MS themselves said in their E3 presentation that Natal will run on existing hardware too, so I think they will launch Natal on its own with much fanfare and then stage a second launch for the next console after that.

Aye…seriously. LOL The Atari 2600 was a damn good games console. I know the waggle is a bit gimmicy used but the pointer is great and if a developer can be bothered to put the effort in then it makes for a better gaming experience.
I have been playing PES 2009 on the Wii and wouldn’t go back to a normal control method. Its far superior. As is RE4 – Wii edition. I know the graphics are not up to 360 standards but I would pay full price for a new RE game based on the RE4 game engine and control system.
Microsoft shouldn’t release this for the 360. No point in doing a Sega and bridging a generation like they done with the Mega CD 32X and the Saturn.
MS should define their new gen console and make Natal a selling point to get people to buy it without thinking about how long they have had the 360.

Prisoner moral has increased and escape attempts have decreased since the ban.
I didn’t realise the conditions prisoners are being kept in. It must be soul destroying to be locked in a cell (no pun intended) with a sony ps4th. I would try and escape too.

Your absolutely right. No games console manufacturer can sit on its laurels. They all need to keep pushing forward. None of them should be cocky.
But that is exactly what sony have done this gen. They played the same card that they did with the ps2 and hoped that people would adopt the ps4th because of blu ray. They thought they could charge that wee bit more and get away with it. But look whats happened. And blu ray is not the same leap as DVD was back then.
I will be honest I am not sure what Nintendo are going to do next to replicate what they have done with the Wii, because it has to be sufficiently different again.

Blu ray isn’t the same leap as DVD was regardless of how long it was out. Unless I am missing something with Blu ray but isn’t it just DVD HD.

is not like the 360 is killing the PS3 in sales number. as of last week the PS3 has outsold the 360 by 2.5 million in the same timeframe (quote form a website: “PS3 is outpacing x360 by a hefty margin of 2.5m units at the same timeframe”)
Same goes for Bluray vs DVD, bluray has done way better than what DVD did in the same timeframe.

Jeez, I have only been on this for less than a week and I am already ‘worst’ than Kev or CAD. I take that as the honor it is.
I will come clean. I live in a bubble and have no idea ho w many 360s have been sold or how many ps4ths have been sold. I know that Wii is more than both but thats about it. I assume 360 has sold globably more than ps4th but really I havn’t got a clue.
With regards sonys “Intruder”. What I was meaning is that they are looking to bring out something that Ninty has been doing for nearly 3 years now and Microsoft have what I consider took a step forwards. Meaning, n my opinion, sony are a step behind MS and looking to tread water with Ninty.
sony need a new set of cahoonas and dare to be different and push things forward. I take it the eye toy is very good and ahead of its day when it came out. Why don’t they capitalise on that and bring out there own Natal thingy.
The DVD vs blu ray thing is really from my persepctive so sorry for the confusion. I have absolutly no desire at the moment to move up to blu ray. And I think the everyday man/woman in the street is the same at the moment. It offers no tangible benefits against DVD other than the picture quality. Its more of the same, but the movies are double the price. But hey obviously someone loves it if it selling more than DVD.

I’m amazed that someone is trying to defend the Wii of all things.
Andrew I know Punch Out was just released, but what was the last good Wii game before that? Mario Kart? That came out over a year and a half ago. How about a new IP on the Wii? …. oh that’s right there hasn’t been any.
At least the PS3 and 360 share good multiplats. The Wii usually get’s a watered down version because the Wii’s out dated hardware can’t handle a current gen game (Resident Evil, Ghost Busters, Dead Space, Madden, Guitar Hero, etc, etc). The Wii is nothing more than a GameCube with waggle controls.

I know the Wii is just a Gamecube with waggle. And I know there are not as many games as for the 360 and ps4th. But that suites me fine as I don’t have a great deal of time to play games. Long gone are the days where I can put in a 6 hr session. So I never get to finish a game. The exception being RE4 Wii edition, which I made time to play.
So for me pick up and play games are perfect for me. Even still, I would never buy a game like FFXXIII or what ever number it is up to. I couldn’t stand playing a game that long.
Some of the Wii games are not watered down though Barnabe. Like I mentioned in a previous post, PES 2009 is an amazing game that is more imersive that its “big brother” counterparts due to an intuative control scheme that lets you play the game you want. Any mistakes made in the game are generally your own fault, not a restriction of the game.
Another game which I think will be better than the other consoles is the new Wii Motion + versions of Tiger Woods and the tennis game too. I know, I know the graphics will not be as good but its going to be more realistic to perform the moves than to push a button.
So why wouldn’t somebody defend the Wii. Its unrivalled as a party game machine (Guitar Hero did you mention) and it has brought back some of the fun in gaming that has gone missing in the recent years that every other game has to be a FPS.

the good wii games get lost in the countless garbage that comes out for it. Theres nothing wrong with casual games, but lets not compare the wii games to that of the other two systems. While they have their place, I for one don’t want to always play a party game. Sometimes I rather play games alone.

As with all these speculative pieces the only ‘answer’ anyone (outside of Microsoft or their partnership/contracted staff) can say is….who knows?
Personally I see 2 options.
1) Valhalla launches with the SoC 45nm combined CPU & GPU but is optimised for Natal with perhaps addition RAM and maybe a clockspeed boost to the SoC CPU/GPU.
or
2) Microsoft wrong-foot everyone and launch with a brand new Xbox 720 (or whatever they want to call it) with far more up-to-date specs that are way ahead of the present level of the current Xbox 360 & the PS3.
A new console that can also play pretty much every 360 game and perhaps even boost the looks/frame-rates of the existing catalogue
(and if we get really lucky a console that really does fully meet the needs of a ‘media hub’ and is able to play all the popular video codecs natively).
Personally I’m really hoping for the latter and would be one of the 1st in the line for one if they lauch at the usual £400/$600 US level.
I guess we have to wait between 1yr and 1.5yrs to find out.

Very very nice Arvis (& thanks for asking).
I got a fantastic bargain on flights to go and see one of my brothers in Singapore on the new A380
and
I managed to prebook a very decent seat, there and back, for later on this year
(Singapore Airlines @ £299/$486 US/$614 AUS).
I also got my external drive sorted on my 360 and
I got videos to work properly on my Zen (you have to mess around cos it only works with 1 resolution and the bitrate can’t be too high).
I hope yours (and everyone else’s) was at least as good.

My weekend highlights: I acted in a cobbled-together dinner theatre/murder mystery type thing (except there was no murder) and I played Scrabble with the gf and her family and won by scoring 20pts just by laying down the letter F on one Double Word Score tile.

It seems like its barely an upgrade. To me your idea sounds like the cheap console alternative that was brought up in the past. Better used for drawing the casual audience. Why it needs to be that expensive it beyond me.
The heat MS would take if they did this. It would appear that they are rushing the next one like they did this generation.

New ideas are great, just don’t forget about the people that put you where you are today. I own a wii, and the ‘none casual’ stuff is lacking. I also wish nintendo would evolve thier first party stuff a little, I feel like I’ve been playing the same Zelda since OOT (Wind waker was nice for the exploration aspect tho, shame it was too easy).

The whole PS4 built on the existing cell technology makes me nervous. Honestly I can’t see much of a difference between the GameCube and the Wii.

Roca, 2-3 years tops, if not faster, which still allows the slim version bundles to come out by or in the next year and stay on the market to subsidize the new model and tech until it becomes profitable (Sony model). 2-3 years will put the 360 at 6-7 years of age, much longer than the original’s short lifetime.
The new model could then take advantage of being to market first (like Microsoft did this gen) and having the old model subsidize it. $400+ for the new unit and $200+ for the old. The dedicated hardware design for the new model will have had sufficient time not only to advance for a significant leap in capabilities, but the price for it will have been able to come down to reasonable levels as well.

It certainly wouldn’t be justified on a Valhalla (with tweaked bits or not) and nor do I see any way whatsoever that that would or even could happen.

As far i as im concern the only company to put out slim version of its console is Sony. they did with the PS1 and the PS2. I dont think that is M$ strategy as they are struggling trying to fix the 360 overheating issues. so making it smaller would make it worse.

A nicely tweaked 360 could be coming soon or maybe a whole different better model altogether (and note the “sub $300 price point”). –
“A new Xbox 360 gaming system may be coming according to a report out of 1UP. Take it with a grain of salt though.
But according to them, Microsoft is gearing up to release an all-new Xbox 360 console this Fall 2009! Before you sigh too much at the prospect of having to upgrade, consider this: It will only be a beefed up Xbox 360 console and not say, the hypothetical “Xbox 720″ or whatever the true next-gen Xbox 360 will be called.
Either way though, according to reports this new system will not only contain improved specs but it will have the newly revealed Project NATAL camera built into the system. However it may be a “new platform” for Microsoft that literally will carry the Xbox 360 into the future until the true next-gen console release. And it may even have a new title, such as the “Xbox NATAL” instead of “Xbox 360″. It would also be fully backwards compatible with older Xbox 360 games. But like the “DSi”, it would offer new features and added graphical power that newer games could take advantage of.
Additionally, FGNOnline is claiming that it has some specs for the new Xbox.
Here they are according to them:
GPU
Whereas the original XBox 360 used a Shader Model 3 GPU with on-board 10MB eDRAM for 720p acceleration, the new XBox has a Shader Model 5 capable GPU with 32MB of eDRAM for 1080p output. The GPU again is designed by AMD and runs at a clock rate of 600MHz.
CPU
The IBM developed CPU shall have 6 cores instead of the 3 found in the original model. Each single core shall have the same processing throughput as each single core from the XCPU. The 360′s xmb will slowly be converted into a windows ‘basic’ OS.
Soon enough you’ll be upgrading that xbox720 upto Windows 7 ultimate edition (the basic version just won’t play games except xbl ones.)
MS’s plan is complete (as Emperor gates would say). MS has another 20 million+ PCs running windows

Of course its speculative, I didn’t say otherwise (and neither did they).
The big deal – for all consoles now – is that with TVs staying at a max res of 1920 x 1080 for the foreseeable future consoles probably aren’t going to be taking huge (and expensive) strides for a while.

Well made in multi-millions for a console you just can’t compare what the prices are like now and what they might be for this.
Besides, (my own little bit of speculation is that) the SSD is to keep noise to a minimum and for playing games directly off of.
I think they have learned from this gen that we want to be able to back everything up to the HDD of our choice (even if we can’t play games & run everything directly from it).

ok keep day dreaming. first of all Natal is coming out Christmass 2010 at the earliest.
second it just doesnt make sense to make and new x360 with new specs. if the PSP Go was to come out with defferent specs it will be a total failure i can tell you that. because its going to harder for devolopers to make games for it, and if they realese a new console with new specs M$ have to back it up with games and as we all know M$ first party studio is pretty lame (and please dont count Epic).
on the other hand while M$ is struggling with hardware and pheripheral (RRoD and Natal,HDD etc) Sony is busy bringing all the games. as they just announced 15 exclisive first party game being in development that has not been announced yet. (second party developers doesnt count like Insonmiac, Sucker Punch or Eat, Sleep, Play)

The ps2 and ps1 and all other consoles except the Xboxs didn’t have a HDD. Does that mean they are not consoles? A HDD a consoles does not a make.
And as for the controller being the best. Obviously it can’t be not too bad but I hated it. I used to cramp in my hands trying to use the shoulder buttons. But then maybe my hands do not get as much errmmm… “exercise” as you ps4th fanboys.

Pathetic when i play GTA IV or my other Xbox 360 games on Xbox Live all i see is lagers but mostly cheaters on Halo 3. Plus a bunch of whining 12 year old. PSN is free is lag free doesn’t have kids well not 12 year old that cry for anything. Also the PS3 can support up to 60 players so far with no lag on Xbox 360 that will take the whole service down and you still have to paid for that sorry ass service. Xbox Live should be free for what you get.

Well I will kindly explain it for you since it’s not obvious to you. There are more people on Live and more people to play with. You can private chat in Live while in game. It is so much easier to contact friends and invites friends to play games then the PS3. I also find the voice chat much better on Live, with PS3 you have so many people using so many different types of headsets that the quality really suffers sometimes. These are just a few of the reasons I find it better. My point with “‘Yes PSN is free, but that is why Xbox live is better!’ is that you get what you pay for! PS3 cost more then the Xbox 360 and that’s because it is a better quality system in terms of hardware. Xbox live being better is a matter of my opnion. But PS3 being a better quality piece of hardware is a MATTER OF FACT! You can argue with me till your blue in the face, Xbox 360 is a piece of shit compared to PS3 hardware wise! Does that clear things up for you SW?
