Metal Gear Solid: Rising is a hack-n-slash with no stealth action

June 18, 2009

Metal Gear Solid: Rising is a hack-n-slash with no stealth action There is a lot of buzz surrounding Konami’s new Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Unlike the previous MGS titles, the game will not be written or directed by Hideo Kojima. There is a rumor indicating that the new Metal Gear Solid: Rising game will not even be a stealth title, but a hack-n-slash title.

Kojima-san has indicated that he will be hands off on the Rising title and focus mainly on the PSP title Peacewalker, which he calls MGS 5. That begs the question what Is Metal Gear Solid: Rising then? An extension of the MGS 4 universe?

The game’s lead character will be Raiden and the tag-line no longer sports the “Tactical Espionage Action” sub-heading which has existed since the first MGS game. Rising sports a new tag-line never seen before – “Lightning Bolt Action.”

This has led to speculation that the stealth element will completely be stripped from the game. The most plausible speculation is that the new Rising game will be a hack-n-slash game. The action sequence from MGS4 revealing the hack-n-slash action by Raiden is a big clue as to his new fighting style.

Kojima Productions have been said to be working on a hack-n-slash title since the MGS3: Snake Eater days on the PS2. If you recall, there was a mini-game (”Guy Savage”) during a dream sequence where you control a character with two swords that kills off enemies in some dungeon with destructible environment.

That mini-game (”Guy Savage”) was written and directed by Shuyo Murata, who is one of Kojima’s lead staff members within Kojima Productions. With Kojima-san revealing that his staff will be helming the MGS: Rising project, there is a good possibility that this new MGS is in-fact the same game or continuation of the development of Guy Savage.

This title has been said to be in development since 2005. It would be interesting if this is true as it suggests that Konami and Kojima has been planning on releasing a separate spin-off MGS game for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for a very long time.

  1. Ivan_PSP:

Nah buying this game sounds too lame no Hideo means the game will never be as good as MGS4 OR Peace Walker. This is not a Metal Gear Solid game that fan would buy.

  2. Andrew_DS:

I too will also not be buying this game.

  3. phranctoast:

Hack n Slash games represent my favorite genre. I’ll wait and see before passing judgment.

  4. Rimmer:

Shouldn’t there be a question mark in the title, seeing as the assumption that the game MIGHT be a hack & slash is based on some far-fetched speculation? Or are you already trying to trash the game because it has the audacity of appearing on a non-sony product as well?

  5. Happyhockum:

    Wow, those rumours again, eh?

  6. Andrew_DS:

Does anybody really give a damn about a Metal Gear game anymore?

Judging by the sales of Metal Gear Solid 4 (the movie) I take it no.

  7. phranctoast:

yay Andrews flame bait. They should stop making those games. I bet they haven’t even sold one copy of mgs4.

  8. Andrew_DS:

At last! Some one is talking some sense. Thank you phranctoast. But do you have any proof to back up your claim that they haven’t sold a single copy. I believe you but, a word of warning. There will some in here that don’t.

  9. Roca.:

I believe him…..they should stop making them.

idk how MGS4 earned most of konami’s profit.

but everybody’s wrong and Andrew is always right. (your patethic)

  10. Andrew_DS:

MGS4 earned most of Konami’s profit? Really. It earned them more than Pro Evo Soccer? And all the other games the produced. Combined. Damn. They don’t sell many games do they!

  11. Roca.:

PES was up there with MSG4 but MGS4 most profitable game for Konami last year.

Here what u need to do before you start posting garbage.

    1- go to “google.com”
2- type whatever your are going to post in the “search box”
3- look at the facts and feel like an idiot

then you can come an argue ur nonsense comments.

  12. Roca.:

    Andrew

by the way you were pretty confident about being a Wii fanboy boy. but ur obiosly a 360 fanboy hiding behind the success of the wii because you know 360 is not match to the PS3 in quality and innovation. Wii fanboys are supposte to talk shit about both 360 and PS3

  13. phranctoast:

I thought the whole MGS franchise was shifting back to Nintendo.

Isn’t that why snake was in SSB.

  14. Spideydog:

“by the way you were pretty confident about being a Wii fanboy boy. but ur obiosly a 360 fanboy hiding behind the success of the wii because you know 360 is not match to the PS3 in quality and innovation. Wii fanboys are supposte to talk shit about both 360 and PS3″

You will find that there is a little residual resentment from the Ninty fanboys because Sony stole their crown from N64 onwards ….. it only took them 10-15 years to get back to the top !!!!! Just shows anything is possible

  15. Barnabe Jones:

Andy – he is right. MGS4 accounted for most of Konomi’s revenue. Actuary the PlayStation accounted for 67% in total.

    playstation.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/konami-financial-results-show-incredible-reliance-on-playstation/

Spidey – just wait until next gen. After the waggle fad is over Nintendo is doomed for failure again. Time after time, they refuse to make a decent console with good games. It will catch up with them eventually.

MGS: Rising – I’m waiting until we see the game in action. I also like hack and slash, but they are changing everything that made MGS great in the first place. I really hope this game doesn’t destroy the franchise.

  16. phranctoast:

    @Spidey
“it only took them 10-15 years to get back to the top !!!!! Just shows anything is possible”

IMHO they still are far from the top. They need more than Mario, Zelda, Metroid and a few highly rated indie games to change my perception.

Sales numbers mean diddly to the average gamer.
All systems out already sold enough hardware to ensure that they see another gen. It’s simply bullet points for fanboys.

As long as great games continue to come out, Ill be a happy gamer.

    @Barnabe
Kojima definitely has his hand full lately. It looks like the next Castlevania will be a kojima produced hack and slash. hopefully they follow the God of War model and make this 3d castlevania a gem.

  17. Barnabe Jones:

I liked what I saw for the new Castlevania trailer. I really liked Lament of Innocence. If they can manage to come up with a good story and characters, tight controls, and cool environments – I think the game could be amazing.

  18. SW:

@Roca – No he’s a troll, so just stop wasting you time responding.

  19. Andrew_DS:

    Well good for MGS4.

And Spidey has hit the nail on the head. We are all very bitter and twisted about the massive dump sony done on Ninty after the joint playstation venture went sour. Very bitter. Grrrrrrr (shakes fist at sky, drops to his knees and growls ‘Why god, why?……sniff sniff’)

Phranctoast. You say it will take a lot of games to change your opinion of Nintendo. If Nintendo did get all the games you mentioned, would you buy a Nintendo or would you stick with either sony or Microsoft. Not directing the question only at you. I don’t believe many of the sony/Microsoft gang would. And I believe Nintendo know that too.

Nintendo has been the staple diet for gamers for since the mid 80s. But the current gaming generation, I imagine, perceive Nintendo to be a bit kiddie now. Not because of the games but because of the lack of cool. Where as sony were considered cool when they brought the ps1 and ps2 out. That mantle has passed to Apple (who would clear up if they released a console, but thats a different story)

So Nintendo HAD to try something different. The Gamecube sold to Ninty fans (like me) but lost out in a direct head on battle with sony and Microsoft. If your wanting to keep fighting, but you know you will lose the battle…change opponent. Or better still go for no opponent at all. Thats what they have done. So they get no thanks for bringing out a console that is every bit as good as there competitors (GC vs Xbox vs ps2), and then get slagged off for trying something different.

  20. Andrew_DS:

“speech impediment” – Ha ha ha ha. I love it. Its that bad he writes the way he speaks.

    Seriously thought. Its mental illness.

  21. Barnabe Jones:

The NES was my first console. I was a Nintendo fan up until the Wii. The reason I will not buy a Wii is simple… there are not enough decent games to play on it. Nintendo went almost a whole year without releasing a decent first party game. A majority of the games that are released are crap. The Wii also gets watered down third party games, due to the consoles lack of processing power. So why the hell would I buy a Wii? The nostalgia of Mario and Zelda only go so far. What new game franchises have been introduced on the Wii this gen? None.

Also Apple did release a console. You just don’t remember because it failed so quickly.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandai_Pippin

  22. Barnabe Jones:

Also did you ever stop to wonder why you are the only Wii fan on this site? Is it because a majority of people who purchased Wii’s aren’t gamers?

  23. Roca.:

dont reply to his comments. ignore the wii loner

  24. SW:

    @ Barnabe

    *raises hand*

    I like the Wii…

  25. Barnabe Jones:

But would you be satisfied without your PC, 360, or PS3?

  26. Akaro:

    (Andrew just experienced mitosis)

-> Another Wii fan here. <-

I couldn´t buy the console when it first came out (no money, no time). At last I could at October 2008. In the mean time I kept myself alive with online games and my DS. The next thing I remember was a buying frenzy involving the Wii.

Now I´ve got about 15 games for it (and counting). At a rate of 1-2 hours of gaming daily and 3-4 hours each day on weekend… it thing I can keep myself satisfied with it.

Back to snake: I think the big problem is not that it may be a hack-n-slash, but that Kojima is not taking part of it.

Action and stealth… Could both concepts exist symbiotically in a game?

  27. Duel Brawler:

I m thinking. How it will be possible to make same game on PS3 & Xbox360. Blu ray has 50 gb capacity & Hd dvd has 8-8.5 gb capacity. Two things possible. Either PS3 gamers wont get justice or He has to cancel xbox version different then ps3

  28. harry sachz:

Andrew’s having a bit of fun, getting you boys worked up, red in the face and throwing furniture around the room. He’s having a laugh at your expense because you’re all taking what he says personally. I think he’s hilarious.

Funny how roca is trying to accuse people of being trolls. He’s the biggest troll here since Ivan_PSP.

  29. me_:

    @Barnabe Jones

So you owned a Game Cube and you’re upset about the Wii getting watered down ports???? Didn’t all the third party developers complain about lack of space on the Game Cube and either water down ports or not release them at all?

Besides the first party Wii games have been much better than their Game Cube equivalents.

  30. harry sachz:

Sweet! I am picking up a free Wii at Harvey Norman this weekend!

  31. SW:

    @Barnabe – No, no I wouldn’t.

But I purchased the wii (already had the pc) and wasn’t satisified, then purchased a ps3 and wasn’t satisfied, then purchased a 360, and i’m still not really satisified ;)

  32. harry sachz:

Maybe you need the Ultravibe Pleasure 3000?

  33. Barnabe Jones:

@ME_ – Admittedly the PS2 was my main console. The GameCube was there for the Nintendo games, and a few goodies like MGS: Twin Snakes, RE 4, RE1, and Eternal Darkness… I think that might be it though. I definitely hit a point where I realized there weren’t as many games to play for it.

Are Nintedno’s Wii games MUCH better then there GameCube counter parts?…. maybe a little, but not THAT much.

  34. Barnabe Jones:

SW – I hear you. At the rate I fly through games, I could easily fly through all three console’s releases. Not sure I could afford to though…

  35. me_:

Eternal Darkness was a good game. I never did finish it though.

I would say that Mario Galaxy is much better than Mario Sunshine.

I would also say that Mario Kart Wii is much better than Double Dash but that’s probably because I didn’t like Double Dash.

As for the others I haven’t played them enough to tell. They Wii version s seem to review fairly well though.

  36. harry sachz:

Looking forward to getting my grubby hands on Madworld.

  37. Andrew_DS:

Hay Harry. Like I said before. At least you get me and don’t take things too seriously.

Not sure what is wrong with Roca and why he goes out of his way to not like me ;-) . Haven’t had enough time to diagnose the issue with him. But I will be here for ages yet so should work him out. I do have one theory. I think he suffers from schizophrenia!

One minute he is ROCA! A Wii and Andrew_DS hating ps4th fanboy. The next minute he is “FUCK ANDREW_DS”! A Wii and Andrew_DS hating ps4th fa…..wait a minute!

I am suprised to see a few Wii fans here now. Keep fighting the good fight guys. Gamer Blorge is very two sided these day. Wii need to make our presence felt.

  38. Roca.:

I am suprised to see a few Wii fans here now. Keep fighting the good fight guys. Gamer Blorge is very two sided these day. Wii need to make our presence felt.

yeah since ur an xbox fanboy, but because u know xbox360 is not match for the PS3 you try to cover it by saying ur a Wii fanboy.

  39. Barnabe Jones:

Harry – MadWolrd is a six hour game with no replay value. I suggest you rent it.

ME_ – Believe it or not, I was never a huge Mario Kart fan. I haven’t actually played either or them. I agree 110% about Mario Galaxy though. I’ve played through about half of it at my girlfriend’s house. It’s a great game. Also I never beat Eternal Darkness either. It was really hard.

  40. Andrew_DS:

Damn Roca, ya got me bro. I thought I had the perfect plan to bring down the ps4th fan boys. Even though I am obviously a 360 Xbot, I thought it would be genius to masquerade as a Wii-tard. No one would suspect such a devilish scheme and soon the world would belong to Microsoft. Mwoo ha ha ha.

But you got me, you got me. Two small flaws in my plan. Firstly, who is gonna actually like the Nintendo Wii? I mean c’mon. If I am gonna have a story, I should at least make it plausible! And even though I had fooled most of the ps4th fan girls out there, I underestimated one of them. A little boy called Roca who never, NEVER, even in sonys darkest hour, gave up believing. Who would have thought a ps4th fan girl could have had a double figure IQ?

Plan Thwarted. Maybe my next plan is even more dastardly. Mwoo ha ha ha. I will pretend to be a ps4th fan girl. Work away from the inside by pretending the ps4th and sony are perfect and amazing. Actually, I can’t. My imagination just isn’t that good.

  41. Roca.:

sunshine was the worst Mario game every.

still regreting buy that stupid game.

  42. Andrew_DS:

Agreed Roca. Sunshine while not bad (and it wasn’t) was not great either. I didn’t regret buying it but I got stuck on one level and instead of going back to tryand beat it, I just put the game away.

They didn’t capture what Mario 64 had and improve. Galaxy is back to Mario at its best.

  43. kev:

meh…metal gear games haven’t been truly Tactical Espionage or stealth in long time…. for that, one needs Splinter Cell or Thief games…..

  44. Arvis:

Kev, nobody with a brain actually believes that. You included. Try being honest with yourself for a change.

    -Arvis

  45. phranctoast:

In other news. There are no weapons in Halo.

  46. harry sachz:

Is Smash bros worth a purchase?

  47. JofaMang:

Seriously Andrew, does brain damage hurt?

  48. harry sachz:

    Personal insults again? Geez….

  49. harry sachz:

    Dickhole….

  50. Arvis:

    Harry,

Yeah, Brawl is pretty awesome. I’d get it, if I were you. The two-player story mode is a lot of fun.

Also, is it cool if I refer to you as Andrew from now on? You seemed to take offense to Jofa’s comment… ;)

    -Arvis

  51. JofaMang:

It is OK Arvis, he was being sarcastically ironic.

    You had me at Dickhole

  52. Akaro:

Agree with Arvis, Brawl is at its best when playing subspace Emissary at “Intense” with a friend.
