Rumor: Another GTA game besides Chinatown Wars for the PSP

June 24, 2009

Rumor: Another GTA game besides Chinatown Wars for the PSP Rockstar recently revealed that the highly acclaimed Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars game will be heading to the PSP. The game was well received by critics but did not fare so well in sales. This may have been one of the biggest factors why the game is now jumping onto the PSP.

GTA: Chinatown Wars is one of the highest rated DS games out there. Many panned the game to be excellent, and yet it was barely able to sell 90k during its first debut month. This may have prompted Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar to rethink his platform strategy.

Rockstar experienced phenomenal success with the Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories on the PSP. These two games managed to sell nearly 10 million units on the PSP combined. This prompted Rockstar to start looking towards greener pastures on the Nintendo DS. Since the userbase is twice the size of the PSP, the publisher perceived that the DS market would be more profitable.

Ironically, I talked about this exact platform blunder back in April stating that Rockstar should have released this game on the PSP rather than the DS if the company wanted to target the right audience. It does seem like Rockstar may have realized its blunder as the company is overhauling GTA: CW for the PSP.

Some of you may recall my prediction list of rumored games for 2009 back in December of 2008. As it turns out, four of the predictions actually came true this year.

- Rockstar did announce Agent, which is the secret PS3 exclusive game

- Crytek announced Crysis 2 for PS3 and Xbox 360

- Team ICO game was announced this year as The Last Guardian

- A new GTA game will be released on the PSP

However, I did hear about another GTA game besides Chinatown Wars that is supposed to be in development for the PSP last year. According to the rumor the GTA game supposedly follows in the same veins as Vice City Stories running on the same engine. The rumored GTA game could very well have been GTA: CW all along, but I have a strong suspicion Rockstar has been quietly planning another Vice City Stories type game for the PSP. With the release of GTA: CW on the PSP, the rumored GTA game may not see the light of day until sometime next year.

I am curious as to how Rockstar will overhaul GTA: CW for the PSP. PSP owners are used to playing fully voiced action GTA games on the handheld. It will be interesting to see if Rockstar will add in new voice work to compensate for the text along with a better quality resolution and graphics. Stay tuned for more information.

  1. Andrew_DS:

Whoopeedoo. A game for the pspiss. Who cares. Oh yeah, thats right. The niche retro handheld market.

  2. lock_down:

San Andreas Stories here we come…still the best GTA by a mile.

PSP is getting a solid collection of games with more GTA, more MGS, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Persona, Soul Calibur, Tekken, Assassin’s Creed, MotorStorm, Gran Turismo, LBP, PixelJunk, Rock Band…not to mention PS1 classics MGS1 and FFVII and PSN games like Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake.

Uncharted PSP is what we need.

  3. Roca.:

Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake ?? the the whole name.. lol

Lock_down you forgot all the Square Enix titles:
    - Final Fantasy Dissidia
    - 3rd Birthday (aka Parasite Eve 3)
    - Final Fantasy Agito
    - Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep

    then we have:
    - Army of Two Portable
    - Echochrono
    - Jack and Daxter: lost frontier
    - Socom: Fireteam Bravo 3
    - Star Wars: Renagon Squadron 2
    - Undead Knights (from TECMO)
    - Fantasy Golf Portable
    - Tales of VS
    - Buzz! (new Buzz game)

There is also rumors of a new God of War game for the PSP.

  4. CAD:

Well it just goes to show that if your not a first Party game on Nintendo you basically are wasting your time. Hopefully EA has got it right because they are selling the Motion Plus with their sports game. It seems like only First Party and games with Perpetuals only sell on Nintendo. It’s a shame that Nintendo has become on big gimic.

“Whoopeedoo. A game for the pspiss. Who cares. Oh yeah, thats right. The niche retro handheld market.”

    @Andrew_DS:

Losing your touch Andrew_DS? Come on, sure the DS/DSI is outselling the PSP. However to call the PSP a niche market is absurd! I know you hate Sony and all, but at least keep it realistic!

On topic, yeah really can’t say I’m excited for a new GTA on the PSP or any console for that matter. Just getting really bored with that IP, they need to really bring it up quite a few notches to gather my interest. Besides I can see myself busy with Final Fantasy 7 on my PSP for a LONG time to come! lol

  6. Arvis:

Oh man, I can’t wait to try out Dissidia. A game like that has been a dream of mine for years and years. I do wish, though, that it used a more traditional fighting game mechanic.

But what we really need is more Perpetuals…

  7. lock_down:

PSP follows Gran Turismo is being niche. Perhaps when something sells over 50 million it becomes niche?

The PSP is almost becoming the PS2 of its generation…a real good line up of franchises and new IP. Really looking forward to Resident Evil PSP.

It’s the just price that’s out of control…$249 for the Go is ridiculous. I’ll see how much it is in the UK before I get one.

  8. Roca.:

The Resident for the PSP is starting a New Resident Evil Franchise.

They story of S.T.A.R.S, Leo, Chris, Wesker, Jil and company is over.

They are starting from scratch now.

  9. Barnabe Jones:

My bet is San Andreas Stories. GTA China town wars was a pretty big step backwards, DS owners usually have to settle for games like that, but they’ll have to do a major overhaul to bring it up to PSP standards.

Also who thinks the Conduit is destined for failure *raises hand*

  10. Roca.:

You guys wanna see a real Gundam Japan Built in the City. its crazy

    h**p://www.pinktentacle.com/2009/06/gundam-night-pics/

  11. Barnabe Jones:

I saw that on Adult Swim. That’s awesome. Only in Japan.

  12. Barnabe Jones:

I’m definitely getting Dissidia, but I’m also interested in Crimson Gem, Persona, and the new Monster Hunter… the PSP’s current and upcoming line up is amazing.

  13. Roca.:

yeah i think im going to spend more money on PSP games than anything else.

There is only 5 games i’ll be buy for the PS3, MAG, Uncharted 2, Demon’s Soul, Bioshock 2 and Assasin’s Creed 2.

I’ll get Ratchet & Clank, Modern Warfare 2 and Tekken 6 later on

  14. JofaMang:

Whoa Whoa Whoa hold the fucking train…

There is a new Parasite Eve coming out?
    *freaks out like its 2000*

  15. Barnabe Jones:

Yeah 3rd birthday should be out next year. I haven’t played any of the other ones though.

  16. Barnabe Jones:

…. ok that settles it! I’m off to go pick up Monster Hunter. I’ll see you guys in a few months.

  17. Arvis:

    Barnabe,

Crimson Gem Saga is near the top of my Gamefly list. I’m really looking forward to trying it out. Have you played it yet?

    -Arvis

  18. Barnabe Jones:

No not yet. I’ve only heard good things about it though.

I’m actually a little over whelmed with the amount of PSP games I want to play at the moment.

  19. Arvis:

Yeah, I got a PSP for Tactics & Crisis Core and figured I wouldn’t touch it after that, but now there’s Crimson Gem, Dissidia, Gran Turismo, Peace Walker, AgitoXIII eventually… it’s crazy…

    -Arvis

  20. Barnabe Jones:

OK, lets just say that this guy I know, who has custom firmware on his PSP wants to update it.

Since the firmware can’t be downloaded unless it’s directly attached to a PSP, should this guy be concerned about any possible repercussions from updating? Legal repercussions?…. god I hope not.

  21. Barnabe Jones:

This friend of mine went ahead with the update… and his existing ISOs still work?

  22. lock_down:

Oh no Barnabe, tell this “guy” piracy is wrong…

Hopefully the stories of Sony unveiling an Apps Store for the PSP turn out to be true so a proportion of PSP users don’t have to use custom firmware.

Sony should be doing what Apple are doing and allowing people to create and install apps and lite games. It would make the PSP a ton better.

Though making some PSN network games compatible with PSP first would be cool. Flower on PSP would be wicked…I’d play it on the train when I’ve got a view of a motorway for 10 miles…

  23. Spideydog:

If they won’t make PSP touch, at least give it another analogue stick FFS ….

  24. Andrew_DS:

Ok I accept the fact that the pspiss is not “niche” but it most definitely is not the ps2 of the current handheld generation. Its just not selling enough. DS for games and sales.

  25. Barnabe Jones:

Andy, fun fact: The PSP has sold 48.07 mil vs the Wii at 50.86 and crapbox at 30.75.

The reason that Nintendo products sell well, is because a 25% of the earth’s population is retarded. PSP game are better than most Wii games in terms of quality and online components.

Lockdown – “This guy” is going legit. In order to do that though, you do have to connect to the PSN to update. He did it, and everything seems ok, but he won’t push his luck by logging into his PSN account. An apt store would be amazing btw.

  26. Barnabe Jones:

Also… I’ve only made it through the tutorial missions, but so far Monster Hunter gets a 10 out of 10.

  27. Akaro:

    Barnabe:
“The reason that Nintendo products sell well, is because a 25% of the earth’s population is retarded.”

That line is offensive for me and my brothers. I ask you to change “retarded” for “Wii-tarded” post-haste.

  28. Roca.:

That line is offensive for me and my brothers. I ask you to change “retarded” for “Wii-tarded” post-haste.

lol. The DS sells better because the PSP is not as “User friendly” as the DS for kids under 8 years old.

  29. Barnabe Jones:

“The reason that Nintendo products sell well, is because a 25% of the earth’s population is Wii-tarded….”

Roca, yeah you’re right. The DS is more of a kid friendly product. Still at close to 50 mil and the PSP Go & lots of really good releases on the horizon, it’s done pretty well for itself.

  30. Andrew_DS:

Funny fact about the DS only apealing to kids there. But its strange how in all the airports and undergrounds and cafes I have been to I have only seen adults use the DS and can honestly never seen anyone over teh age os 18 play a pspiss. Hmmm.

Mayb u can STOP posting at all.

  34. harry sachz:

No way, Andrew cracks me up. If anything he should be posting more… and should have his own weekly column also.

  35. Roca.:

ur just as dumb as he is.
