PS3 price $299 technically now with new bundle
Many gamers have been asking Sony to lower the price of the PS3 for a while now. It seems like a huge price break is finally arriving to the current 80GB PS3 configuration in the way of a super bundle. Technically the price of the PS3 will work out to approximately $299, which is $100 off the current price of the system.
Rumors of a PS3 slim have been circulating around the Web recently with the assumed price point of $299. However, it seems like the current 80GB PS3 configuration might receive a huge price break in the way of a super bundle before the slim even hits the stores.
According to Kotaku, employees at Best Buy have leaked some incredible news. Currently Best Buy is stocking a PS3 80GB bundle that comes with Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2. Its amazing that Sony is offering such a super bundle as it will retail for the exact price of the current PS3 80GB configuration. This means that technically you are buying the PS3 for about $299.
This bundle has not been officially announced and is not on the sales floor yet. However, multiple sources at Best Buy have leaked this information with pictures to prove that this new SKU exists. It seems like Sony is targeting Xbox 360 and PS2 owners who have been sitting on the fence waiting to pick up a PS3 after a price drop.
Hardcore gamers waiting for a price drop will be enticed by the fact that the bundle comes with two games they would have picked up anyway not available on the Xbox 360 or PC. This is definitely a smart move on Sony’s part as this bundle provides excellent value and highlights two of the greatest games on the PS3. As Kotaku mentioned, this does raise an interesting question – is Sony making room for the PS3 slim by clearing out existing stock?

I can see the value of this bundle, really I can! However bottom line is that the consumer still has to fork out $399. Not everone likes the type of games that MGS4 and Killzone are. Also it really cost Sony very little to bundle those two games with the system, certainly not $100 per box. Sony really needs to just cut the cost to $299 and let people choose the games they want. Then everyone will be happy and I won’t have to read or comment on another fucking PS3 price cut story for at least a week or so! lol

HAHAHAAHAHAHHAHA oh that’s priceless. At JB Hi Fi you can buy a 360 pro with Gears, Gears 2 and Fight Night Round 4 for $449! So TECHNICALLY you’re picking it up for just under $200 (I am being fair and calling Gears 1 a $50 game).
Or even better, they’re selling Elites for $499 with Halo 3, Fable 2 and Assassin’s Creed! Again, counting Asassin’s Creed as a $50 game, you’re picking an Elite up for TECHNICALLY $250!!

Harry, your figures are off by $100. In theory, bundles like this can mean good value, but often some of the bundled items are of no interest to you. Plus how is a bundle with two hardcore adult titles like MGS or Killzone going to appeal to the demographic of shoppers that Sony now need to draw in, like parents or more casual gamers? I can’t see this being a particularly good deal for tha majority of people. Sony ought to simply bundle two vouchers redeemable for a new AAA title and a classic title (either instore or as mail-in), and leave it up to the buyer to choose their games. This worked for Bluray and HDDVD player bundles fore example.

Funnily enough I see the recently launched 160gb PS3 is $499 US.
Now this is what I’m talking about.
A price cut (with or without bundle) to clear old stocks of the smaller 80gb hard drive version and the new spec model goes back at the old models original price-point.
It’s also worth asking the question if they then take the supposedly “massive” $100 off that $499 price-point what are we left with?
Back to $399 – and all for what?
A hard drive the PS3 fanclub say is no big deal cos most of them will fit a much bigger one anyway.
Ooops.

If this comes out, it will be interesting to see if this has the same PS2 BC as the previous MGS Bundle 80GB ($499).
Between the plain/core 80GB model (now $399 here) and the MGS 80GB (previously $499, no longer sold new from major retailers) there were several differences:
The MGS system had 4 usb ports, two memory card slots, and PS2 BC.
The 80GB system being sold now has 2 usb ports, no memory card slots, and no PS2 BC, however, it does have a 65nm more efficient processor that is said to draw less power (supposedly down from 200w with the 90nm to 135w) and make the system run more quiet.
So which model will this bundle have if it released? I don’t know, but I would prefer to have the best of both systems, if possible (doubtful).
In any case, it seems clear that Sony is making moves to clear out old stock for the new model that has yet to have specs released. Nobody can fault them for that, but I think I’ll save my money until the new model comes out (possibly sometime later this year). If it’s better and has PS2 BC for a lower price, I’ll go for it, if not, I might just stick with my 360 for a while.
The thing with bundles like this is I would love the games, but once they are done I usually move on to the next ones and never touch them again. In other words, I would rent them with the GameFly service I already have and save the $100 instead of buying them.
Regardless, this a better deal than just the system alone, and a good move on Sony’s part. However, it’s just not that enticing to me as one of those “Xbox 360 and PS2 owners who have been sitting on the fence waiting to pick up a PS3 after a price drop” that it “seems like Sony is targeting”.

Carl, most likely it only has the 2 USBs without all of the extra slots (which are pretty useless anyway), but it will have the newer processor.

I have to agree with the Xbots on this one: never has this site deducted bundle extras from the purchase price to claim a price cut on a 360 bundle. It is a little slanted, but hey, sure got you guys riled up.
My PS3 is basically an unpainted MGS bundle unit (80gb rep w/ 320gb HDD, 4usb, card readers, Software BC) that I got about 18months ago. I sold the 60gb model last winter (with the TV) to put some bank away incase the economic situation took my wifes or my job away.
I can still sell my BC unit for decent coin to one of my friends that is holding out for its return or a price drop. I don’t need a copy of Killzone, so I would probably just trade it back in ($45 trade in value at EB games here in winnipeg, heh). I finally have to admit that I have never played MGS4, nor seen it first hand, so getting that would probably be good.
I am about 20 hours from 100% completion on FF12, after that I can’t forsee ever needing it again. Even if I did get the urge, my computer can emulate PS2 games (FF12 tested and successful) with AA and AF, looking better and smoother than even what the ps3 puts out.

Mike, it isn’t available yet. MGS4 + Full BC + PS3 = $499 was supposedly an awesome deal as well, but still too much for me personally. Here’s the one I’ve been waiting for: Full BC (as was included in original model almost 3 years ago) + PS3 = $249.99 “awesome deal”. Trust I’ll buy that one. If not made available for that price, I’ll definitely consider the slim bc model at $299.99 later this year or next.

Ghostbusters on the other hand was an abomination on ps3 …… the fuzzy effect does not bode well at ALL. Very poor.

Sony almost never does a bundle where it comes with 2 games and retail for the same price as the standalone PS3. Its insane!
To top it off it comes with the 2 must have titles if you own a PS3, so I perceive this as an eventual purchase in most cases, unless your a casual gamer.
I’ve seem many threads where new PS3 owners ask what new games they should purchase, 100% of the time its MGS4 and Killzone 2 or Uncharted…
If the PS3 Bundle costs more than the price of the standard standalone PS3 80GB unit, then I wouldn’t be making a big deal and writing about it.
Also the fact that the price of the PS3 has been a source for controversy by those who do not own one yet, this should be welcome news.
As to why I wouldn’t write about a 360 bundle – is there anyone who will care or care as much as a PS3 bundle? No one is complaining about the price of the 360, because its perfect where its at right now.
You have to understand I write stories targeting broader audiences who will find it interesting.

Was able to have a play on Prototype last night. I haven’t seen the PS3 version so I am not going to sit here and compare, although if I did I feel I would be comparing apples with apples.
This game is absolutely tits! The remake of Manhattan looks great, and there’s no better feeling of picking a dude up and flinging him at a wall. Or picking a car up, scaling a building and throwing it at pedestrians on the ground. I have only played it for around an hour and a half, so I have not got all of my ‘powers’ yet, i.e changing my hands into weapons etc, but it’s been a lot of fun so far. It reminds me a lot of GTA IV, i.e based in new york, free roaming etc, but it’s a lot more action packed.
Graphics are great, the right amount of gore, and the story is interesting enough to not get sidetracked and start killing pedestrians.

Still have to play Prototype. It does look pretty good.
My girlfriend picked up Ghost Busters over the weekend. It’s pretty good, but really short. Only played a few hours here and there, but it was beat in three days. I would have to guess it’s well under 10 hours. Online was fun also… but I would advise everyone to rent it.

You guys arguing about the which prototype is better …… did you look at the link CAD put up. It is actually a very good and non biased comparison. In the comparison they gave the 360 version a slight advantage and looking at the side by side video, the difference between them for our (everyday gamer) purposes are negligible and you can’t tell the difference. I think if you got it on either platform, you will be happy. For me, I will be going the 360 version (I should probably get gears 2 now too)

Ico is on of the Top 10 PS2 game and it didnt even sold 300,000 copies. Okami is a must have and it didnt sell well. same goes for Vagrant Story, Legend of Dragoon, Valkyria Chronicles, Valkyrie Profile, Fatal Frame, Eternal Darkness, etc

spidey – the point i’m making is that now that the ps3 is “technically” the same price as the 360 AND sony has “150 million loyal ps2 users just waiting for the ps3″, there is no reason why the ps3 shouldn’t outsell the 360…. right?

barnabe – regardless of what i think of halo, sony hasn’t had any franchises (even with 150 million ps2 users) that have matched the records set by halo games.
seems to me millions of gamers think halo is a great game despite what you jealous little fanboys like to think…. the reviews are high, the sales are high, the replayability is high, etc….

how is $199 x360 arcade “technically” the same prince as a $400 80GB PS3.

Why would we bother?
I’m certainly not and none of the Xbox owners I know are (nor PC gamers or Wii gamers).
It seems to me that the only people convinced there’s a ton of prospective PS3 buyers out there on the verge of, er, jumping in are the existing PS3 owners & the PS3 fanzine writers (and usually unable to understand how come relatively so few have to date).
You can easily get a better Blu-ray player cheaper now and Xbox has a better game library.
So, why bother?
A mere handful of interesting looking (although often, according to the reviews, pretty short) exclusive titles hardly justifies the outlay.

My buddy just went and got a PS3 after swearing blindly theat he never would (and shaking his head at me when I purchased mine…) and he’s loving it.
So yes, *some* 360 owners (you know, people who like games and are not tied to a particular brand out of some twisted loyality that really gets them nothing in return) will purchase this bundle.
Guess my buddy should’ve waited for the because he got both of the games that are included too.

It’s just a fact that a lot of PS3s were bought at the start of Blu-ray’s release as BD players, they were the best price/spec mix at that time
(and for quite a while too).
What am I going to miss?
Like I said, a handful of games that PS3 owners will claim are the most amazing ever even though the reviewers often say they tend to be pretty short (KZ2 being a classic example).
I think between my PC rig & my Xbox I have it all pretty much covered.
What I miss beyond that is so minor as to be neither here nor there to me.
The only thing that might have seen me go for a PS3 (Blu-ray) is now something I have covered by a stand-alone player
(and it’s a far more capable player at that).
Even with this bundle it’s $400 US (and presumably only in the USA) for what?

Are you seriously trying to still get points from that dead horse …. The ps3 game library is sufficiently overflowing the seams now my friend. There are more than enough games (growing everyday) with enough variety to satisfy ANY gamer if they have ps3 or 360.

No excuses. I don’t really care. I get a fantastic gaming experience and can look forward to many years of ps3 gaming to come. I don’t care that they are coming 1st, third or fifth. Did you see the orig xbox owners (mostly) whine about being last. Nope, they were happy and had a good gaming experience, I know, I was one of them. I didn’t give a s%^T if ps2 was flogging the pants of my machine of choice. No different now.

Um, I merely gave my own rational for going for Xbox and why a PS3 wouldn’t appeal to me.
There’s simply far too little there to provoke me to spend on it.
It makes perfect sense to me.
You don’t agree that Xbox has the bigger (better) game library?
Or is it that you read something else there?
What I said is merely a statement of fact, I did not say the PS3 doesn’t have a good library just that the Xbox selection is better (being bigger and having more games with high review scores).
