SOCOM 4 confirmed two years ago by Sony: Slant6 vs Zipper
With the release of SOCOM: Confrontation, fans of the franchise are starting to look towards the future of the series. With Zipper Int. working feverishly on MAG, there has been some question as to if SOCOM 4 even exists. However, gamers may have forgotten that Sony already confirmed that Zipper Int. will be developing SOCOM 4 a couple years ago.
According to 1UP, Sony confirmed that Zipper Int. is working on SOCOM 4 two years ago (2007). According to Sony, SOCOM 4 will be the true sequel to the SOCOM franchise with a full single player and online multiplayer experience.
The SOCOM franchise has been one of the biggest multiplayer shooters on the Playstation systems. The game series garnered much respect from the gaming community for showing that online shooters could really work on the home consoles before the Halo franchise even had online multiplayer.
I recall playing the first SOCOM game in my hardcore clan back in 2002. Back then, if you didn’t play SOCOM and were in a good clan that participated in tournament matches then you weren’t considered a hardcore gamer. When Halo 2 came out with online capability several years later, the game managed to take online multiplayer to another level.
Slant Six, primarily a PSP development studio took on the task of creating the one-off SOCOM: Confrontation, an online only PSN downloadable and retail available game, which was released late last year. The game received mixed reviews as the game was extremely buggy during launch.
I know that the SOCOM community has been giving Slant Six grief, but you have to consider that this was the studio’s first foray outside PSP development. Also, the studio had an extremely tight timeline to launch the game, juggling multiple PSP projects as well. With that being said I do prefer that Zipper Int. do the development for the next true iteration in the franchise.
Zipper has shown that the studio is extremely good with dealing with net codes since 2002. The studio’s latest project MAG is a testament to its net development capabilities with the game supporting up to 256 players per match.
I do hope that Zipper can set the bar with the SOCOM 4 so that Slant Six may follow in the studio’s footsteps on future development. Maybe Sony can use Slant Six and Zipper to do iterative development like Activision has been doing with Treyarch and Infinity Ward for the Call of Duty series.

Great, now Ivan/roca have another excuse to buy multiple PS3s so they can level up faster.

Maybe it got cancelled.

MAG i think will be a system seller…shall we repeat, 256 player online mode

nothing spells teamwork more than 128 vs 128…

“nothing spells teamwork more than 128 vs 128…”
ROFLMAO that was fkn funny. Like having a shootout in a nightclub ??

“nothing spells teamwork more than 128 vs 128…”
is no more different than CoD, every body is own their own.
and in MAG they have a 8-player squad system that will gain you alot more XP if you work with your squad.

I have nothing against the game or teamwork (I actually prefer teamwork games) 128 players is….. well, like I said before – like a shootout in a packed night club.
In saying that, it does look like a VERY good game and I will definitely give it a closer look.

“…if you work with your squad”
Bollocks to that, if I can’t shoot my own team mates in the skull, bollocks or kneecaps I’m gonna be upset.

lol…….. I will like to see Socom 4 though, Socom was my favorite online game untill confrontation came out. Slant Six changed so many things and thats what ruined the whole game.

Ahhh, a team killer. The sport of kings.
July 6th, 2009
I was looking forward to Confrontation, but the buggy, laggy launch, and lack of a single player campaign kept me away.
For Socom 4, if they add a single player campaign, and release a polished game, I’ll be in.

“Great, now roca have another excuse to buy multiple PS3s so they can level up faster.”
in order for you to rank up, or have ur STATs recorded in socom, there’s need to be at 3 person on the Seals side and 3 person on the Terrorist side. so at least a 3v3 or more. so you’ll need at least 6 PS2, and six copies of Socom to rank up.

So, did anyone here see the Wimbledon final?
Epic. I nearly wept.

whats that?

tennis i believe but the maps are going to be big so it shouldn’t feel like a bar fight spidey lol

I was weeping at Tim Henman’s commentary…dear, oh dear, oh dear.
Roddick is sure to be kicking himself though, having had all those set points in the second.
Probably would have gone on to win had he gone 2-0 up.

Demon’s Souls will be released in North American stores on October 6th. The game is set to bring fresh exprience (Oblivion/Zelda/Shadow of the Collossus/ and some MMO elements).
The game is suppose to be the hardest game you’ll ever play this generantion.

lock_down, you are cool. Thanks for showing an interest.
But yeah, he almost assuredly would have won the title had he not choked big time in the 2nd set tiebreak. What do you think his chances are of winning a Grand Slam by the end of next season? I’d love to see him get the Australian.
Anyways, yes, video games! Has anyone played BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, yet? It’s supposed to be amazing.

I find fighters have limited depth and so I tend to stay away from them.

I’ll be pre-ordering the deluxe edition of Demon’s Souls… It seems that Amazon hasn’t updated there site yet though.
July 6th, 2009
I like fighters… but yeah, I don’t end up playing them enough to warrant a $65 purchase.

@ Arvis, he could do, but if the final set against Federer is anything to go by, he’ll need to be stronger against the serve. Federer never looked like being broken, yet when Roddick was serving you felt it was anyone’s game.
Demon’s Souls looks good, though no word on a UK release surprise, surprise.

@ Ivan,
“is no more different than CoD, every body is own their own.”
That’s my point, I have grown tired with games like CoD where even though you’re wearing the same uniform as the other 15 players on your team, you’re basically on your own still, it’s only the accumulative points of individuals that determine if a team wins.
Maybe i’ve been spoiled by Left 4 Dead where you have to team up or you’re all going to die.
July 7th, 2009
left 4 dead is a lil different… its have good team skills and die… or dont and die a hell of alot quicker
thing im not looking forward to on MAG is grande spamers… it’s bad enough on COD and KZ2… imagine 128 people throughing grandes in the space of ten seconds… well… KA-BLAMOOO is the only thing that comes to mind
July 7th, 2009
Yes, it’s much different, it’s better. It actually makes you feel like you are on a team, rather than being divided into two colours and shooting the crap out of each other.

Yup, I got the PS3 Special Edition version, the game is really well done, the story mode is by far the best i have seen in a fighting game. online is also fun as you can record the entire match agaist an online opponent, or you can search for more videos other than yours, The characters are well balance they are all different from each other, im still learning each character’s move but so far im having fun with the Story mode. The Fighting style is more like Guilty Gear/Marvel vs Capcom. I have already done a 36-hit combo.
I’m a huge fan of fighting game, so lets say if Soul Calibur 4, Street Fighter 4 and BlazBlue came out on the same day, I’ll go for BlazBlue.

your exactly right on this one. That’s why im not that into CoD, I used to love Socom just because of team work, you have to use a strategy against ur opponent in order to win. and if you tried to play on ur on, you would get voted out. Slant Six fucked the latest Socom game badly, I hope they all get fired.

I agree with you guys. I’m pretty much done with FPS for a while. The whole tactile aspect of MAG is pretty interesting, but we’ll have to see how that actually works out.
July 7th, 2009
The new SOCOM launched poorly, but has been fixed up pretty good now. I play it now and then, but have been busy on the computer lately, heh.
I have been done with twitch FPS since 6months into CoD4. I played WaW a few times at a friends place, and it wasn’t different enough to entice me back to the series. The tactical, weighted feel of KZ2 was good for the fix, and R2 was a lot of fun too.
I haven’t played KZ2 in a few weeks, and will probably stay away from the genre until MAG to be honest. I am excited to experience elements of an MMO integrated into a large environment/Population FPS. The fact that the matches will be split into multiple skirmishes and goals, that will change and converge over the course of the match, alleviates my fear of grenade-fest on a 128v128 scale.
July 7th, 2009
I’ll have to see this game when it comes out. To me, 128 vs 128 has the hallmarks for a potential clusterfuck. I wouldn’t want to have to deal with 128 douchebags at the same time on any game. I only have so many bullets.

From the sounds of it harry, it will never be 128v128. The maps are large, and the teams are segregated into squads. As squad vs squad completes their objectives, they move on to other areas and objectives in the map. I am sure it will be possible to ditch your squad and move into other areas, but if SOCOM is any reference point for gameplay at all, going solo = fail.
I am sure it will be designed so that there isn’t 128 people trying to talk to eachother at once in one channel. The rank and tier system will have command based chat channels, and the progression system will decide who you get to talk to.
I give the game designers more credit than just assuming everything will just be 16v16 x8.
