Demon’s Soul Deluxe Edition worth the money in North America

July 7, 2009

Demon's Soul Deluxe Edition worth the money in North America Demon’s Soul is coming to North America for the PS3 and it’s just as hard as the Asian version. The game is notorious for being challenging and rewarding at the same time. Atlus will be publishing two versions of the hack-n-slash RPG in the U.S. The deluxe edition just might be worth the money as it comes with a decent amount of gear for a low price.

Demon’s Soul looks like an intriguing RPG with online integration into the single player mode. The game takes place in the mysterious kingdom of Boletaria. The story is interesting as it deals with saving the kingdom from an evil presence which has taken it over.

The game seamlessly integrates the online world with the single player experience. For example players who are playing through an area may see a ghost-like apparition running around, which is actually another player somewhere in the U.S. Gamers can choose to team up with a complete stranger to defeat a difficult enemy. There is also a way to leave clues and hints in certain places for others playing through the same area to see it. A bloodstain where another player might have died can also be seen to give clues as to what difficulties might lay ahead.

The most intriguing aspect of the game is how it can turn you into a boss battle for another online player. At times you might be pulled into another player’s game to play as an enemy boss. If you are able to kill the other player as the evil boss, then you will receive loot and gear. I have never seen this in another game and find it fascinating. I suppose the closest thing I can describe it to is Left 4 Dead, where one player can spawn as a zombie.

Interestingly enough, the game treats everyone online as a pool of AI resources where you can use live players to support you or fight against, ensuring a different gameplay experience on each play through. Also, Demon’s Soul has the whole gambit of RPG elements where you can create the looks of the character and pick the type of class. Atlus assures gamers that there is a ton of loot and leveling up in the game.

Atlus is giving Demon’s Soul the royal treatment by packaging a good amount of stuff into the deluxe edition. The publisher will be packaging a full-blown 150-page strategy guide, art book, and a fancy Demon’s Soul slipcover when you pre-order it for the low price of $69. It really is rare for a publisher to throw in this amount of stuff for only $9 more than the standard edition. If Eurogamer, who gave it a 9/10, is correct in stating that Demon’s Soul is “absolutely compelling; dark, detailed, unforgiving, creatively cruel,” then that strategy guide just might come in handy.

**UPDATE**

Here are a few more bullet points about the game:

  • - Its a 80+ hrs game that will be all consuming of your life and there is some replayability as the world will progressively get harder every iteration you play through the game while you keep all of your stats.
  • - blood stains on the ground is from another live player’s death and activating it will show a quick replay of how that person died providing hints.
  • - Once you get to the main area it will become a semi-open world similarly to Diablo.
  • - you can co-op with up to 3 players
  • - The action is super precise, its not a hack-n-slash combo-fest. You can literally live or die by how good your parrying skills are with the shield and sword.
  • - There is a bit of a Karma system going on where if you decide to aid NPCs the world becomes brighter weakening enemies, or if you decide to kill NPCs for their souls or die too often the world will become darker making enemies stronger.

anyone else get a semi on when you read the bit about being the boss battle in someone elses game?

  2. harry sachz:

    Prove it!

  3. Roca.:

    its been proven!

  4. Spideydog:

I see Harry as the “meat between the sandwich” at the moment ?

  5. harry sachz:

No, I meant to prove his semi.

That’s how I like it Spidey.

  6. ncaissie:

    sounds like fun!

  7. CarlB:

Sweet. October 27, just in time for the slim!

  8. harry sachz:

you can take my spot when I get tired, Norm.

  9. JofaMang:

    Hook, line, and sinker.

    want.

  10. Roca.:

CarlB do you have a PS3?

  11. Barnabe Jones:

Day one for me. I’m almost getting a Monster Hunter vibe. Third person combat without the aid of lock on, insane difficulty, massive boss fights… but without the farming, mining, fishing, gathering, etc.. witch is a good thing.

  12. Roca.:

This game is going to be Epic

  13. lock_down:

    $69 = £43.

Not bad, might import since Europe is getting ignored.

  14. Barnabe Jones:

Supposedly Atlus “has no official presence in Europe”.

Also.. “Sony told Eurogamer it had “no plans to publish [Demon's Souls] in Europe at present”. Koei and Ubisoft, publishing partners of Atlus and From Software, also commented that there are “no plans,” or are unaware of any plans, to bring the game to the European audience.”

    … it’s not looking good.

  15. Mike Ferro:

Good to hear that many of you are looking forward to the game.

Unfortunately Atlus does not publish games in the EU territory currently as they are one of the smaller publishers.
However, according to Atlus rep. if sales are smashing in the US like it was in Asia then a publisher will most likely pick up the rights to distribute over there.

I would recommend EU gamers to import the deluxe edition from the US as lock_down mentioned its only $69 = £43. You will be playing with noobs on NA servers which is a good thing.

  16. Rhino:

I’m not a big RPG fan, but this has actually sparked some interest. $69US = $90AUS which is still pretty good value.

  17. Rhino:

Just had a look at Play-asia thay’ve got the Delux for $101.77. Still damn good value.

  18. harry sachz:

Metacritic score of 87 based on 4 reviews. It will probably level out at a solid 81 after all reviews are in.

  19. Barnabe Jones:

Considering it’s an old school dungeon crawling RPG, with crippling difficulty… a metacritic of 80 is amazing though.

  20. harry sachz:

an 80 metacritic game amazing? Let’s not make it out to be something it’s not. It’s going to be a solid game.

  21. Barnabe Jones:

New IP, ninche genre, small publisher, relatively no hype… and so forth.

I haven’t played it so I can’t say. I have seen more than a few people say that they liked it more then Oblivion.. but again, I have no idea yet.

  22. harry sachz:

Oblivion was tits. I liked that game better than Fallout 3.

  23. Mike Ferro:

    @harry,

Not sure what compels you to talk about metacritic, its not like your planning on buying the game.

…but Im sure you’ll be the first to come back here and let us know if turns out to be a solid 93. ;)

  24. Mike Ferro:

    BTW –

**********I’ve updated the story with several new bullet points check it out****!

  25. bigmickyd:

how the hell do you prove a day old semi on?

  26. harry sachz:

    @ mike,

    I will, just watch!

You should have taken a photo Mick. Hey I was out your way last Saturday afternoon, do you live near the Sefton Playhouse?

  27. bigmickyd:

i live about 5 minutes from there, my high school was the next street over… no need to question what you where doing there :D

  28. harry sachz:

Just enjoying the scenery, just enjoying the scenery….

Some of the dancers there are pretty rough. One of them stunk like cheese.

  29. bigmickyd:

i remember in my 2nd last year at high school, we had water polo training at the pool that morning which is just passed the play house and we had to walk to school afterwards… as we walked past the play house at 7:30am out walked 4 of our teachers see the 10 of us turn straight around and go straight back in… we never said anything… but i never did do badly at science again :)

  30. Spideydog:

Harry said: “One of them stunk like cheese”

You had your nose too close to “something” …..

  31. harry sachz:

Nice Mick! At least it wasn’t ‘Gay Hour’.

Yes spidey, we chipped in $15 each and got a private show. She had stretch marks and stunk like gorgonzola, unfortunately she was the pick of the bunch. They were nothing like the Mens Gallery dancers.

  32. ncaissie:

Thanks Harry but I was talking about the game lol.

  33. Spideydog:

    LOL

  34. Roca.:

87 is awesome, im sure is going to get to the 90′s when the game comes out.

    Oblivion was slow and boring.

  35. lock_down:

    69 is more awesome.

…69 being the $ price in question, of course…

  36. Spideydog:

    “Oblivion was slow and boring.”

How dare thee say such a thing ….. Oblivion is the bomb. Wash your mouth out with soap !!!

  37. harry sachz:

Oblivion was excellent. Much better than Fallout 3.

Are Bethesda in the process of making a new Elder Scrolls game yet?

  38. Spideydog:

Dunno, but I hope so. I liked FO3, but was disappointed when they capped the skills and level up. It felt as though when you got to the cap of both, the game essentially finished. Hence I stopped playing it. With Oblivion even after finishing the main quest, I was compelled to keep going to get as many skills/spells level up as I could and complete all the side quests and explore.

Moral of the story … Bethesda bring us another Elder Scrolls, but minus the FO3 crap !!

  39. SW:

    I fookin hope so.

  40. harry sachz:

And it has to be said, Oblivion was made in 2006 ( i think) and Fallout was made in 2008, and the graphics are much better in Oblivion.

  41. Spideydog:

    Agreed.

  42. Roca.:

Bethesda is working on Fallout: New Vegas and a FPS game that i forgot the name.

  43. SW:

Oblivion also has an advantange in the graphics dept. in that its a bright vibrant world rather than a grey boring one…

    Man I need another Morrowind.

  44. harry sachz:

New Vegas? Is than another expansion?

  45. Roca.:

thats a whole new Fallout Game

  46. Roca.:

    in Las Vegas

  47. Barnabe Jones:

I’m actually playing Oblivion for the first time now… So far I can see a lot of obvious similarities between the FO3 and Oblivion. Don’t know if I have a favorite just yet…

Roca – I’m going to guess that Oblivion puts more emphasis on the open world exploration. It can be slow going… but exploring the world is pretty fun. Demon’s Souls is probably a lot more straight forward action and adventure, which probably keeps the pace of game faster.

  48. Roca.:

Well in im not saying Oblivion is a Bad game. I just didnt like to run around for hrs. and if you steal something those freaking guard chase you down the whole MAP which turns into another waste of 2 hrs.

The Exploration was corny because all the Dungeon looked the same to me. and the OTHER world was pretty gay.

Another thing i Hate is the fact there are alot of useless item in the game was picking up everything i found but it was for nothing.

  49. Spideydog:

Roca said: “and if you steal something those freaking guard chase you down the whole MAP which turns into another waste of 2 hrs”

Dude, tips for young players …. don’t get caught stealing and they don’t chase you. If you do get sprung stealing, go to a thief rep and pay the guards off.

  50. JofaMang:

I owned the GOTY black edition of oblivion for the ps3 (orig + expansion) and played the hell out of it until I traded it in for Fallout3. I never owned them side by side, but I do think Fallout3 is better graphically, while Oblivion was a more stylish and colorful game.

  51. SW:

I also think the game even warns you of picking up EVERY thing at some point.

  52. Spideydog:

When up on a high ledge/structure they recommend, DON’T LOOK DOWN.

    What does everyone do?
