Activision brings Call of Duty back for Modern Warfare 2
Most of the advertisements surrounding Modern Warfare 2 up to this point have indicated that the Call of Duty title will be dropped from the sequel. However, several months later, Activision has confirmed that the publisher will bring back the title for the game.
Modern Warfare 2 is one of the most anticipated shooters coming out this year. However, apparently it hasn’t been getting the awesome recognition the other Call of Duty games in the franchise has been getting without the “Call of Duty” brand name. The latest demo boxes indicate that the COD brand name is indeed back into MW2.
According to Joystiq, a survey indicated that 50 percent fewer people recognized Modern Warfare 2 without the Call of Duty brand name attached to it. This may have prompted Infinity Ward and Activision to put the Call of Duty name back into the sequel.
Previously, when an Activision rep was questioned by Joystiq as to why the COD name was missing from the MW2, the response was that Modern Warfare 2 “has taken on such a life of its own.” It seems Activision is changing its tune now by stating:
Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title’s package.
It is interesting to see that less than half the gamers out there did not recognize MW2 without the COD name. This tells me that the COD franchise has a huge following with the casual market despite being a hardcore FPS. This may be one of the few hardcore franchises to break into mainstream and sell by its name alone.
Personally I think its a great idea that Activision is brining back the COD name for MW2. After all it is a direct sequel to the first Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game.

“Anyone that doesn’t know MW is part of COD is a freakin retard”
I Call it Call of Duty 4….play and simply. so most ppl know the game for Call of Duty 4 and never payed attention to MW underneath it.
it is just like the Persona Series. most ppl call it just Persona 1 ,2 , 3 etc and they dont even know the franchise main name which is Shin Megami Tensei

July 11th, 2009
Have to agree with harry Arvis, I HD’d it & full-screened it and I agree it looks nice but “on a completely different level than any other game in existence right now”?!
Naaaa.
July 11th, 2009
Yeah, come on Arvis, everyone knows Forza 3 will be the game that will be on a completely different level than any other game in existence right now.
It’s “definitive”, remembmer?

That dude is going to shapeshift any moment now. I know the voice of Odo when I hear it!!!

Oh I should probably add that I agree with Arvis.
Those are some awesome cinematics, I *presume* its in game stuffs and if so it looks great, even down to the little details such as facuial movement etc.
There seems to be about 89 pages of people on gametrailers that agree also
July 11th, 2009
Harry and Happy are not used to this amazin graphics you have to excuse them for the lack of graphic knowledge. since their unrelaible console is maxed out

LMAO, you are funny with your daft assumptions.
I have a PC with a Q6700 four core CPU, 4gbs of 667Mhz dual channel RAM and an Nvidia 9600GT GPU on a 28″ 1200 x 1080 monitor.
Now whilst I am happy to agree that this is no longer near the leading edge of PC specs these days it sure as hell pi$$es all over anything your PS3 is capable of
(or, for that matter, what my Xbox 360 can do).
In fact I’d say that if you really rate those graphic as “on a completely different level than any other game in existence right now” you are just fooling yourself.

tell a 3rd person shooting game that look as good as uncharted 2 on the PC orthe x360?
yeah thats what i thought
July 11th, 2009
You guys really should stop talking PS3 games up as much as you are. I played the original Uncharted yesterday (brother in law got it for free with a new controller) and was rather interested to see these incredible graphics, as I recall many of you have said that the original Uncharted had ‘some of the best graphics to date’.
While I enjoyed the game, characters were solid and gameplay was varied, I could help but feel let down by these claims of ‘amazing graphics’. They weren’t as good as I was led to believe. This was not the first time I have been let down by a game due to the overhype that I read here. Killzone 2 has good graphics, but the game is rather shallow, however if the readers here were to be believed, it is the greatest game ever. INfamous, although again another solid and original game, was not this fantastic piece of artwork that I was led to believe.
You give me these lofty expectations of these games and unfortunately they’re not delivering, and I think sales data backs this up.
July 11th, 2009
Sorry, that is ‘couldn’t help’
July 11th, 2009
Roca
Seriously, you’re deluded.
You can’t simply run the same res at the same frame rates on almost anything.
Tell me about your 600p COD4.
What was it?
Oh yeah, ‘yeah thats what i thought’.
Please be serious.
Your Nvidia 7800 GPU is stone age compared and your 7 Cells with a tiny amounts of choked RAM is not even in the same league.
July 11th, 2009
“You can’t simply run the same res at the same frame rates on almost anything.”
ok then get uncharted 2 for ur pc. if it can run everything. and i sure know pc video card are powerfull but it cant run uncharted as the game uses the Cell to the fullest.
Gears of War look like shit to me because i heard it is the best looking game on the 360. but if ur a PS3 owner ur going to be let down by Gears of War graphics.
and Just For the Record. Uncharted has a better cover system. God of war is going to look 10 times better than Uncharted 2. and Uncharted 1 look better than anything on the 360.
you can argue all you want but nothing is going to change
July 11th, 2009
Harry & happy,
I try not to be condescending, in general, but in all seriousness, if you were unimpressed by that link I posted, then I really, really feel very sorry for the both of you.
I may hate the 360, but when I saw the graphics on Gears of War 2, I still sat up and whispered “…whoa.” I thought we were all reasonable people here, just with differing opinions. Now.. I’m not too sure about the two of you.
I mean, look at it again: the lighting, textures, animations… it all BLOWS AWAY anything seen in any other game.
But some people just can’t see past the end of their own nose, I guess…
@SW: Was that really Rene Auberjonois?!? I’ll have to watch it again…

‘uncharted as the game uses the Cell to the fullest.’
Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahahah.
Bwhahahahahahahaha.
Hahaha.
Ha.
July 12th, 2009
Chris,
I don’t want to sound condescending back to you, but if you feel sorry for people because their opinion on a cutscene from a game differs to yours, then you need a reality check buddy. I watched it, and did not see anything I haven’t seen before. I can’t see why you’re creaming over it.
How can you ‘hate’ a piece of machinery anyway?
July 12th, 2009
@ Chris,
Another thing. I have said in the past, and even in this particular thread, complimentary things about PS3 games, i.e INfamous was solid, I enjoyed playing Uncharted, Killzone 2 has good graphics. However you have expressed your hatred towards the 360, something which I find childish as it’s just a machine. And you have the audacity to call me unreasonable? Perhaps you should look in the mirror before making such ridiculous statements.
July 12th, 2009
SW “Hahaha”
“Although this is an early Alpha build of the game, Uncharted 2 is already looking phenomenal and I have only been privy to a small slice of gameplay. Utilizing an enhanced Uncharted 1 engine, now dubbed the Naughty Dog Engine 2.0, the team explained that while Uncharted 1 used 30 percent of the PS3′s SPUs with the first game, Uncharted 2 will rock out on 100 percent of the SPUs, pushing the Cell processor further than ever. This will allow for an even more impressive particle and lighting systems, as well as new fur shaders, skin enhancements — and in the Himalayas, delicious snow and ice effects. With Uncharted 1 already one of the best looking PS3 games, I’m drooling for the final product.
is on the last 3 paragraph:

I did think the lighting looked nice but beyond that I wasn’t blown away.
Sorry but I wasn’t.
That has nothing to do with and of the usual Xbox v PS3 banter.
Just my honest opinion.
Roca
The Cell is great for the folding @home caluclation stuff.
But it just isn’t capable of matching a decent PC set-up.
Not with that ancient GPU and the RAM issues as it’s weakest linka.
July 12th, 2009
1. 360 graphics is as “ancient” as the ps3′s and
2. ps3 has the same amount of RAM as the 360, just has it in a different place and is used differently. If the programmers used the memory properly, there is no dramas.
Arvis, I have to give Harry a shout out here, he has proven he can say good things about both machines. I am confident that if he likes something, he will voice it and vice versa. The “other” fella on the other hand … well. I will leave it at that.
I do agree with Arvis, the game does look amazing and the first one did blow me away when it came out too. This has has raised the bar significantly.
July 12th, 2009
This is getting funny watching Roca making big claims about PS3 graphics uber alles – as if it is only that which determines ‘the best games’ anyways.
Besides their being so ‘amazing’ being a highly debateable point, they don’t.
I thought we had got past that little gem of thought some time ago.
Can you say ‘superficial nonsense’.
July 13th, 2009
happy i never said anything about ps3 games being the best games. i just said they are the best looking game. There is no such thing as BEST GAME. because for you Halo can be your best game. for other it might be Mario bros. or mayb 2k9.
I also know PC can put up better graphics than any console. i just havent seen anything on the ps3 that looks as good as some PS3 Games (KZ2, MGS4, Uncharted 2)
By the way my fav games are (best game for me):
-Final Fantasy VII
-God of War Series
-Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-Uncharted
-Metal Gear Solid Series
Right now im Playing Persona 3, I gotta say this is one of the Best RPG’s i have played in years. im getting Persona 4 as soon as im done with #3/
July 13th, 2009
Harry and Happy Just can’t admit when they see a good game if it is on the PS3.
PC’s may have more power (If they are gaming PC’s most aren’t) but the OS takes a lot of the RAM, VRAM and CPU power.
July 13th, 2009
Alright, I issue an apology. I was out of line, and I’m sorry. I found out the other day that my ex-girlfriend is now married, barely six months after leaving me and our 4 year relationship behind. I’ve been in a rather grumpy mood since.
That being said, it still blows my mind that you guys don’t seem impressed with that video. I just can’t get my head around it. That facial animation is quantum leaps beyond anything else in any game.
*sigh*
Hope you all had good weekends.

Did anyone see the video from G4? They played through the demo.
Very impressive looking. The helicopter was blowing the foilage and kicking up dust. Looked very pretty.
They end it with you being in a building that was shot with a couple of rockets. The building then proceeds to fall. It starts rocking back and forth and furniture slides accross the floor one way followed by the other.
After seeing the vid, i was just like……wow.
I don’t know why its so hard to give credit where credit is due. I can admit that both splinter cell and alan wake look beautiful. See it’s not that hard. It’s very humorous that harry/happy have the exact opposite opinion of most websites.
July 13th, 2009
@Roca – I may have misquoted you in a way, I wasn’t laughing at the ‘using cell to the fullest’ part. I was laughing because even if it is, why on earth does that mean PC’s wouldn’t be capable of it.
July 13th, 2009
because the Cell is compose by 7 processor which can do million things at once. and obviously a PC using a single processor is not going to be able to do that. graphic-wise it may surpass what the ps3 can do. but not in all that is going on on the screen at once
July 13th, 2009
@Roca
Don’t talk about things you know NOTHING about. I won’t waste my time pointing out the astounding amount of idiocy you managed to pack into those two sentences. Your ass has an impressive throughput when it comes to talking out of it.
July 13th, 2009
Aww Jofa…. You stole my reply
*shakes fist*
July 13th, 2009
why are you getting so upset about?
i just said that the Cell can do “a million” at once because I dont actually know the exact amount of things it can do but I but I there are alot.
Flower is a sample of what it can do. they Dev said that more and a million grass in the game moving at the same time and that it was only possible on the PS3, now if you want to get upset about it got get upset at him.
July 13th, 2009
@Ivan
I am not contesting your knowledge of the PS3, but I don’t have to launch a debate over your knowledge of PCs… you have already proven your lack of knowledge in that arena.

PS3 Cell
During this period, IBM filed many patents pertaining to the Cell architecture, manufacturing process, and software environment. An early patent version of the Broadband Engine was shown to be a chip package comprising four “Processing Elements,” which was the patent’s description for what is now known as the Power Processing Element. Each Processing Element contained 8 APUs, which are now referred to as SPEs on the current Broadband Engine chip. Said chip package was widely regarded to run at a clock speed of 4 GHz and with 32 APUs providing 32 GFLOPS each, the Broadband Engine was shown to have 1 teraflop of raw computing power. This design was fabricated using a 90 nm SOI process.[14]

let me if u don’t understand some of those IT terms..ill help u out bro.
and since have many IT certificates (because what i do requires me to taker courses every year) I dont have to get into a debate with you cuz u obviously think u know about computer just bucause of the specs you see at best buy or at newegg. I might not be a tech savvy about video as that is not my of my strengths. but i can tell you video card and RAM are nothing without a CPU
July 13th, 2009
“because the Cell is compose by 7 processor which can do million things at once. and obviously a PC using a single processor is not going to be able to do that. graphic-wise it may surpass what the ps3 can do. but not in all that is going on on the screen at once”
This is the quote that portrays you as a fool. I haven’t gamed on a single core processor in 3-4 years. You do know that there are multi-core CPUs now, right? Hell, the i7 runs the equivelant of 8 threads, that will act like 8 CPUs for programs that are optimized for it.
As for graphics, you are correct in that graphics CAN be limited by CPU, but that is code dependent. The advancement in GPUs in the past, i don’t know, 5 years, has lead to GPUs doing more and more of the workload that was traditionally the CPUs job (PhysX for example).
I have built my own computers for 10 years. I have had tech and IT positions that required me to know more than I remember since I left the field. You talk like a 12 year old on meth. I don’t think you have a leg to stand on here, Ivan.

Please stop trying to use Wiki like that and making blow-hard claims about ‘knowing PCs’, it is no cover for you quite obviously actually knowing f**k all about the subject.
July 13th, 2009
Roca obviously doesn’t know or understand that whilst his PS3 Cell can only perform dedicated tasks (and in fairness be good at them – but that gflop number is largely limited to excelling at mathmatical calculation) a modern multi-core CPU can use it’s cores independantly.
Bless.
July 13th, 2009
Not to mention the thing is a big fat paper tiger and ill be fucked if it ever reaches its gazillion trillion billion million flops ‘potential’.

July 13th, 2009
but that gflop number is largely limited to excelling at mathmatical calculation) a modern multi-core CPU can use it’s cores independantly.
yeah like the 360′s CPU right?
and i i dint use wiki to prove my IT knowledge i used wiki to put out there what the Cell really is. so learn how to read before u talk.
and my comment above might not be 100% accurate but it is acceptable. i never said the PS3 has the best graphic card. i was just saying how powerful the cell. and it is still one of the most powerful processing unit now. Jojo just miss understood what i was trying to say because i developed my comment more cearly.
July 13th, 2009
@ norm
“Harry and Happy Just can’t admit when they see a good game if it is on the PS3.”
Are you not even reading my posts? I have complimented some PS3 games. Have you done the same to 360 games?
@ Chris,
No worries. I had a similar thing happen to me a few years back. I saw her best friend around 6 months ago on a train and she told me that she is now divorced. Bursting out laughing probably wasn’t appropriate, but I couldn’t help it.
July 13th, 2009
Roca.:
“yeah like the 360’s CPU right?”
Er, firstly we were talking about PC multi-core CPUs and you got found out talking semi-literate cr@p so what’s with the running away to bring Xbox into it?
(and despite what some have said here I am the first to say the Xbox GPU is almost – but not quite – as ancient and old a design as that in the PS3)
Secondly no, Cell does not work in the same or similar way as the Xbox CPU.
The Xbox 3 core is heavily related to Intels dual threading independant PC CPU cores.
The 3 cores can operate independantly, something Cell cannot do.
You might ‘kind of’ say the 2 threads per core are a little bit like the Cell’s SPEs but they’re really not very alike at all.
You can coo over spec numbers all you like but without a practical application or in the face of choke-points in the system those bald numbers really mean very little.
That’s why some people say the Cell is a great number cruncher (and it is – IBM and Toshiba are putting it to great use in that arena) but that does not necessarily mean it’s going to be great in a gaming application.
” i never said the PS3 has the best graphic card.”
It’s a very old GPU actually, even lower tech than the old gPU in the Xbox in fact.
Roca, get off of it.
You’re clearly out of your depth here and plainly you just don’t know the subject well enough.
“and i i dint use wiki to prove my IT knowledge”

Hang in there Arvis. Sorry to hear about that. It’s probably easy for me to say, but if she did that to you, you are better off without her anyways. While not wishing her ill will, what goes around, comes around.

No need to apologise mate, real life has a way of intruding on the peaceful and harmonious life on-line (jk).
Sounds like a nasty situation and you may well have dodged one if that is how she is.
I know it might be difficult to see anything much beyond your own hurt & anger but for what it’s worth (not a lot I know) that sounds like a classic rebound case and she is the one likely to end up with major long-term difficulties and troubles.
Marriage (IMHO) ought to be the opposite of how it is now, it ought to be difficult to get into and easy to get out of.
