Sony needs to delay PS3 games into 2010 to avoid crowded market
As the holiday season is rapidly approaching it is looking like 2009 is set to be another crowded year for gaming. Sony is said to currently have the biggest 2009 line-up out of any publisher and it is looking like that might actually hurt the company. Sony may need to start thinking about delaying some of the games to 2010 to ensure that the market doesn’t get too crowded.
Last year one of the biggest criticism studios received is around the fact that many of publishers jam packed games in to a three to four month holiday window killing off sales potential for a few of the great games. Great titles such as Dead Space sold poorly despite being a AAA game.
There are a ton of great games coming out from third party studios this holiday like: Borderlands, Wolfenstein, Bioshock 2, Bayonetta, and COD: Modern Warfare 2. On top of these great games Sony has an impressive list of PS3 exclusive games set to release spanning the four months leading up to the end of the year.

Here is an incomplete list of PS3 exclusive games off the top of my head set to release during the four month holiday period:
- Uncharted 2
- Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time
- DC Universe Online
- White Knight Chronicles
- Demon’s Soul
- MAG
- Quantum Theory
- Gran Turismo 5 (semi-confirmed)
On top of the PS3 exclusives, there are also Xbox 360 former exclusives that are being ported or remade for the PS3 such as Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (remake) and Tales of Vesperia (port).
It’s not surprising Sony and Quantic Dream have decided to push back the release of Heavy Rain to 2010 despite being ready for release this year. It’s good to know that Sony has realized that this holiday season will be crowded but the company may need to push back even more games.
Honestly, I think any more than two to three games per publisher might be pushing the boundaries of what the average consumer can spend during this holiday season. I suppose one thing PS3 owners can’t complain is the lack in quantity of great games this year for the system.

i’d rather have “too many” games than “not enough”.. seems Sony has learned that having MANY games, is better than having none..:)
July 13th, 2009
It’s kind of like BioShock 2 getting pushed back. I wasn’t going to get it if it was released in November… but if they release it in a slow summer month in 2010, I’ll be more inclined to pick it up day one. The only thing is, that Q1 of 2010 is already starting to get pretty crowed.
Also I thought Quantum Theory, White Knight Chronicles & DC Universe Online are 2010, right?
July 13th, 2009
lol are u going to buy them all?
i will and i hope they dont all come out during the holydays
July 13th, 2009
Sony aren’t easing games back to avoid a crowded market are they…it’s clear to everyone that the PS3 is in for a major reboot pretty soon, and it’s when they make a profit on the new slim PS3 is when they’ll release their big games…though it’s only ever gonna be GT5 that moves PS3’s.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that the PS3 hasn’t even reached the PS2’s launch price yet…
Bioshock 2 looks a bit samey…I’ll see what the reviews say.
July 13th, 2009
^^ agree (bioshock being samey)
July 13th, 2009
I’m already behind on getting a few games and keep a list of which ones to get when I can. One thing not mentioned about the overload of games approaching is that when somebody can’t afford to throw down $60 on launch day for every game coming out they will just wait and buy them used. Publishers and developers and everyone else involved with lose money. Your right, it’s great to have so much to look forward to but they do need to space it out a bit. That’s a bummer to hear Dead Space didn’t do so well, it’s one of my favorites. I hope they make a DS2 for PS3/360.
July 13th, 2009
Wasn’t the argument why KZ2 sold so little from the start (compared to similar triple AAA titles released in the holiday period) was because it didn’t launch in November? Regardless, the number of people renting rather than buying their 10+ hour gaming experience (myself included, unless it is deeply discounted to around #1) has increased significantly, and will only increase in the future.
I think the PS3 Slim should come way before next year, perhaps even next month, if they can manage to move the old stock quick enough. 1-10 good PSOne games (as I heard suggested earlier on the latest 1Up podcast) pre-installed on the hard drive and a $299 price tag would see them move like crazy. Which is more important for Sony? Selling these games over PSN or moving the new PS3 Slim when it comes out?
July 13th, 2009
Agree with George 100%.
Most people will buy a new game every 1-3 months or so. I can name about 10 games that I’m interested in that are being released between Oct-Nov. I can’t possibly buy them all… so I’ll end up getting the ones I’m most interested in, and pick up the others used/discounted down the road at some point… like I did last year with Dead Space lol. It was a great game, but I over looked it do to the fierce competition.

July 14th, 2009
@Barnabe,
WKC and QT are both Q1 2010, which means Oct. – Dec. of 2009. This is considered to be Q1 of 2010 by the US Fiscal Calender.
DC Universe – 9/25/2009
White Knight – Q1 2010 (10/2009 – 12/2009)
Quantum Theory – Q1 2010 (10/2009 – 12/2009)
Wet is another title you mentioned that I forgot to put in, but that game is looking 50/50 right now. It could turn out to be another Afro Samurai or it could b the next Max Payne. Lost Planet is another title to keep an eye out for.
Any PS3 owners thinking about picking up Tales of Vesperia? Its available for download from the Japanese PSN store right now, but its in Japanese. The demo gives you a taste of the extra content they put in for the PS3 version. It would be interesting to see if its enough for existing owners to buy it again for the PS3.
I did end up buying Bioshock for the 360 and the PS3 for the additional DLC.
July 14th, 2009
Ah.. speaking of… good for 2K Games,
they announced that – BioShock 2, Mafia II, Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption will all be delayed into 2010.
Smart move. May be I can still have some sort of life this Christmas.
2K just needs to focus on pushing Borderlands this year.
July 14th, 2009
I can’t keep up with getting all the good games I want now, little known getting the great releases that are coming on EITHER platform.
July 14th, 2009
Bad news for the console company that invested a major part of it’s assets in developing exclusives that may not have a good enough roi, good news for gamers in general.
July 14th, 2009
i generally don’t like new ip’s stick with the system sellers..
btw u here metal gear is comin to 360??
news to me
July 14th, 2009
@Carl,
Well its more of a bad news for third party publisher than a console manufacturer as it is about making the system more attractive.
I don’t think its bad news for Sony at all as it builds their library which holds a good amount of value/asset to the company.
Also Sony seems to be pretty smart when it comes to maintaining development costs to ensure it can break even.
I recall some third party developers (studios) indicated that Sony is more open to investing in games that may not necessarily sell well in order to build that library which is a completely different strategy then publisher like EA would take, so they were more inclined to go with Sony.
July 14th, 2009
@Mike,
I’m not saying that they are going under anytime soon, just that it seems they may have mistimed millions of dollars worth of investment at the same time a long recession is going on simultaneously with a plethora of successful third party developer titles.
3rd party titles can benefit from both consoles, while exclusive title investments can only benefit from one, and if it happens to be the one that is least popular, most expensive option in a recession, and the company is having a hard time making it’s console profitable, well, I consider that bad news for that console manufacturer, but good news for the gamer, at least in the short term. Hopefully it will pay off for Sony by 2015, as Pachter is quoted as saying.
In any case, it seems the key to their success is leveraging the library they have already built. Perhaps full BC in future consoles, pricing $50 over the competition instead of $150, and even some pre-installed PS1/2/bundled PS3 games wouldn’t hurt.
In any case, we both know Sony is dedicated to the long term vice short term, so they are likely to be profitable regardless of any bad news for PS3 now. PSP Go is certainly a step forward, and PS3 Slim/price redux is the kind of step that will likely enable them to take advantage of their already vast library of games.
July 14th, 2009
If its Pachter said it, its wrong.
July 14th, 2009
The whole industry needs to delay games not just sony. I hate how they all come out at once forcing you to choose.
July 14th, 2009
CON : “The whole industry needs to delay games not just sony. I hate how they all come out at once forcing you to choose.”
I agree, its too crowded and if ur a PSP owner is even worse.
July 14th, 2009
Mike – I’m not 100% sold on WET either. I do like what I’ve seen so far though, and I’m also in love with eliza dushku.. so I’m interested.
Thanks for the clarification. No I really have no idea what games I’ll be getting towards years end.
I played the demo for Tales on the 360 when it released, and I played it again last night…. I’m not really that impressed with the demo. I love the art style and the graphics looks great, however the combat seems a little bland to me. It’s not very deep, and there’s not too much of a tactical aspect to it.
July 14th, 2009
@Mike… you sureyou have the fiscal calender correct? I was under the impression that fiscal year of 2009 didn’t end until March 2010. If that being the case then fiscal 2010 wouldnt start until April.
Games getting pushed back is no big deal to me. Theres so many games to choose from. I just don’t like when games of similar type come out to close to each other. Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. God of War3 ,Darksiders and Dantes Inferno.
July 14th, 2009
Well just to let you guys know my gaming has come to a hault. On Friday I came home and my house was robbed. They took my 360, Laptop, my wife’s jewellery box which also had her wedding ring and band and my wedding band too, they also took my bike for the getaway and some other things. Why are people so wicked?
July 14th, 2009
i feel sorry for you man. i would be really mad if that happen to me.
they fucked up thing is if took ur 360 HDD with it too. thats like starting all over. again CaD i feel sorry for.
Quick question?
-Did you have insurance for any of those stuff?
-do you think it could have been someone u know?
July 14th, 2009
Eliza Dushku, WET and A2M = Win
July 14th, 2009
My sympathies CAD, that is truly FKD. Alarm system is your friend m8.
July 14th, 2009
@phranctoast,
You could be right, I was going by US Fiscal yr, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiscal_year) but Sony may use overseas calender.. although I recall hearing something about Sony aligning their calender with US’s.
Yea, pushing games back is good for everyone around including me. Last holiday was pretty taxing on me playing all those games in a short period of time.
@CAD,
Sorry to hear about it mate. Hopefully homeowners insurance will cover it all.
July 14th, 2009
Damn CAD, I hope you were insured & you don’t have to leap through too many hoops to get sorted out fairly.
Some people are just a f*cking disgrace.
Games released at once?
I don’t care.
It just means I wait a little while and get a bunch of them at half in price or better.
July 14th, 2009
Mike,
So you are saying Sony has its own calendar?
July 14th, 2009
There is only one game I will buy on Day 1. “DC Universe Online”
Other then that one I wait for the price to drop to 50% or more.
Games are way to over priced.
July 14th, 2009
Sorry to hear CAD. I hope you have insurance.
Why wouldn’t you be wearing your wedding rings?
Are you engaged?
July 14th, 2009
Yeah I have home Insurance. Hopefully I can get most of the things back but I hear that if you did not specifically have jewellery insurance you may only receive upto $5000 for it. It is really messed up and I did not even consider until yesterday that my credit card is attached to the 360 so anyone can make a purchase but Microsoft put a block on the use of my credit card.
July 14th, 2009
If they hook up the 360 online you can catch the bastard.
Does yours automatically log you on? report in to MS and get try and get the new ip.
In comparison the 360 is the cheapest thing but it may help you find the culprit.
July 14th, 2009
Ncaissie
Yeah I don’t really wear my ring mainly because I don’t wear jewellery and when I got married it was the first time I had to ever wear a ring. It was awkard to me so I just stop wearing it after a while. As for my Wife she wears it all the time but that Friday morning she forgot it and ask me when we were outside the house if she should go back for it. I said sure but then she decided that it was not a big deal and that going back would take to much time. She beats herself up about it now.
July 14th, 2009
why would they purchase something that is only attach to ur account?
July 14th, 2009
Phranctoast
It may not go online right away because the idiot in their haste left part of the power cord behind. The piece that goes from the block to the wall. They left all the games, the headset and the controllers. I think they took the one controller that was busted. It is a good Idea though. The only problem it that because I changed over my 360 recently to a HDMI 360 I did not know the serial #.
July 14th, 2009
CAD – wow that really sucks man. I would try and contact MS. There might be some hope. That might be your best bet in actually tracking the thieves down.
July 14th, 2009
Ahhh that sucks CAD
Hope they catch em and string em up, hope the insurance pays out too.
July 14th, 2009
Well I hope your insurance doesn’t give you a hard time.
I had a flood in my basement once and had no trouble with the insurance. I had replacement coverage which meant for things like the PC’s they had to replace them with the closes ones at the time.
I had a P2 and a P2 Celeron and at the time you could only get P4s so they replaced them with P4s no questions asked.
Hope you have the same luck.
July 14th, 2009
Hey, CAD, I’m so sorry to hear about what happened. My thoughts are with you and your wife.
Keep us updated, though, and hopefully all will go back to normal soon so we can all be jerks to each other again.
For real, though… hang in there.
-Arvis
July 14th, 2009
he probably dont even care about his 360 because he can get another anyday, but the Rings and the Laptop and w.e he had on the laptop HDD (PICTURES, MUSIC, Importat info) thats a real loss
July 14th, 2009
in other news
“The sequel to IO Interactive’s co-op shooter Kane & Lynch is still alive. A recent trademark filing has revealed the probable title of the game, too.
Last week, Eidos applied for a trademark on Kane & Lynch: Dog Days as well as Kane & Lynch Dog Days (thanks, superannuation). The trademark is only for video games, which seems unusual considering the first game is being adapted to a film. I guess it would be premature to start thinking of a second film before the first one’s even shooting, though.”
July 14th, 2009
Thanks a lot guys for your concern. I really appreciate it.

July 14th, 2009
@ Roca:
Kev still pops every now and again to insult anyone who has anything nice to say about the Playstation or a game on it. He’s probably just found a different site, or maybe he has less time now.
Ivan disappeared. No idea what happened to him.
Andrew probably got bored after Ivan disappeared. Also, he may have gotten tired of being the only Nintendo fan around.
Future Sega Boy got banned.

July 14th, 2009
I know it sounds a bind but with big HDDs now so cheap I cannot recommend cloning your main C drive enough.
You have to power up your cloned HDD every 6 – 18mths to keep your data secure but it means that –
1) at least you should have a working copy of your OS (which can be ultra valuable to you in itself, if you hit problems down the line)
and
2) all your personal stuff like your (perhaps) difficult to find programs, your pics and such are backed up with some degree of regularity (assuming you refresh your collectables each time you power up).
PITA and no help for CAD I know but it might be something everyone else here should think about.

July 14th, 2009
kev – Has been busy counting the “fizicks” calculations for Forza 3.
Ivan_psp – ??? Hasn’t been on PSN for a few weeks now either.
Andrew_ds – realized that the Wii sucks.
Sega Returns – banned AGAIN!! I think that makes the fourth time now.
Dark White Hair – used to be here all day, but he disappeared also. I think he hasn’t logged in to PSN for over a month now also.
July 14th, 2009
“ Ivan_psp – ??? Hasn’t been on PSN for a few weeks now either.”
He’s either dead or Andrew convinced him to switch to the Wii.
I’ll put my money on dead.
July 14th, 2009
Sorry to hear that CAD. Hopefully you’ll be back online soon.
July 14th, 2009
One piece of advice CAD, upgrade your home security, sometimes they can come back after your insurance have replaced everything with nice shiny new appliances, etc.
I’m not saying it will happen, but it is known to happen. (I know a little more about this subject than you might know ….. and No, I’m not a criminal)
Best of luck.
July 14th, 2009
spideydog did it
July 14th, 2009
roca, so far you are the spitting image of Ivan, so even if you are are not (of course you are), nobody misses him.
July 15th, 2009
Spidey’s a prison guard. We had wonderful times.
July 15th, 2009
Hey Spidey, i’m going through your games right now…. you have Space Chimps??? hahahaha
July 15th, 2009
LOL Harry …. How you going after the cavity search?
Space chimps is my boys, I swear it ????
July 15th, 2009
Hmm, too many games to choose from or none at all? As seeing as my systems are eating dust, think I’ll take the first option!
July 15th, 2009
It’s funny… just yesterday Ivan logged in for the first time in over a month. His comment read: “Tired of PS3. Took 30 day rest.”.
July 15th, 2009
I think hell just froze over…
July 15th, 2009
‘Bout time that boy found something else to do with his life.
Speaking of which: am I the only person here who thinks Roca is barely anything like iVan?

July 15th, 2009
But its fun to tease
July 15th, 2009
“Speaking of which: am I the only person here who thinks Roca is barely anything like iVan?”
One big difference was that Ivan’s post were a chore to read as they were filled with some of the worst spelling and punctuation. aside from that, his posts almost looked like press releases
July 15th, 2009
Just read about CAD´s situation =S.
Man! Talk about awful! I hope the ensurance helps you out with everything.
The important thing here is that you and your wife are all right.

oh please harry u shouldnt be talking all that much.
you and kev are just like ivan.
Kev just know to talk about the Vahalla and a supposedly 750 GB HDD for the 360. he is always talk crap about bluray.
and you always say u have a cousin, brother, or a boyfriend who has a PS3 with all the best games, but when u played them for a while u werent impressed at all. (first few minutes of a game doesnt impress anybody, im sure if go through the whole uncharted campaign that will be one of ur fav games.) I wasnt impress with the Bioshock demo back when i had a 360. and right now its one of my favorite game. same goes for the uncharted demo.
July 16th, 2009
i apologize to Kev i meant to say Happy
July 16th, 2009
@ Ivan,
I think I use the word ‘underwhelmed’ rather than ‘unimpressed’, mainly because I get preconceived ideas from the PS3 boys here that these PS3 exclusive games are meant to be the best things ever, only to be let down because I was not blown out of the water.
And also, my boyfriend owns a Commodore 64, not a PS3.
“Kev just know to talk about the Vahalla and a supposedly 750 GB HDD for the 360. he is always talk crap about bluray.” –> haha Ivan, you forgot to run that sentence through your spellchecker.
July 16th, 2009
I miss Andrew_DS, he was funny.
July 16th, 2009
Me too, he could set off the most rabid of PS3rd fanbois. I might venture to say he was even gifted in that regard.
Kind of like CAD, without the angst or desperate effort.
July 16th, 2009
You know you’ve pissed a fanboy off when someone creates a username ‘Fuck you Andrew_DS’.
July 17th, 2009
Hahaha, i totally forgot about that~
July 17th, 2009
“oh please harry u shouldnt be talking all that much.
you and kev are just like ivan.”
@Roca
Sorry Roca, but Harry is pretty much nothing like Ivan (you). A bit of a pervert perhaps (which I’m sure he is proud of and will admit to), but a screaming fanboy like you he is not! lol
July 17th, 2009
Just a bit? haha
July 17th, 2009
if sony’s games are as great as the resident fanboys of the ps3 like to claim, why did the ps3 games sales drop by 59% while the 360 was the only console to increase sales?
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10797_3-10289207-235.html
face it, Ferro….you’re living in a dream world…along with the other resident teenage posters….. good luck with that….
“ooo…but..but…the ps3..EXCLOOOSIVES…”… lmao….
July 17th, 2009
ps…..anyone wanna bet Mike or Dave don’t have the cajones to post an article based on cnet’s news?

July 17th, 2009
no phranc…the story at cnet has the ps3 software sales falling aroun 59% from last year….
not good…. but i suspected the ps3 fanboys posing as “journalists” here would ignore it…
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10797_3-10289207-235.html
July 17th, 2009
harry – cnet reported the ps3 software sales have fallen 59% from last year…. that’s WITH Killzone 2 and MGS4…(the reported “console sellers”, according to dave, mike and the other ps3 fanboys)….
i suspect, harry, since it’s full of facts and does not show the ps3 in a good light, Gamerblorge will ignore this huge news…..
July 17th, 2009
” suppose one thing PS3 owners can’t complain is the lack in quantity of great games this year for the system”
the fall in ps3 game sales from last year says different…
i know…you hate facts……
July 17th, 2009
Mike – “I don’t think its bad news for Sony at all as it builds their library which holds a good amount of value/asset to the company”
do you just make this crap us as you go?
SCEA has been bleeding money for a while now…. please fact check….
the “cash cow” days of the ps franchise is over…deal with it…
July 18th, 2009
^ Nice quad post there kev! Try jamming all your “facts” in one post there buddy! lol
July 18th, 2009
Wouldn’t bother Hawk…
Once Kev ninja’s in here he rarely comes back for a second viewing.
Besides, he’s probably out buying lotion. Its hard on ones penis to mastubate 24/7 over a CNET webpage…
July 19th, 2009
REALLY, did not miss his dribble at ALL…… LOL
Bye, bye Kev – don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out !!
Oh PS ………. “THE SKY IS FALLING” hehe
July 20th, 2009

KEv
“i posted a link that mike refuses to post….. with facts…. keep trying fanboy….”
Lmao…one thing i learned Cnet does not know FACTS.
July 21st, 2009
roca – acutally cnet posted percentages (facts)….
ouch….
July 21st, 2009
since when “percentages = Facts”
so is a article that is 15% real is considered a FACT
July 22nd, 2009
roca – when they have the data to conclude the percentages…..
what article are you talking about? or are you just making up percentages again….?
CNET came to their percentages after crunching the numbers….. you came to yours by guessing….. again……
idk….you seem to be the only one on the ‘net who considers CNET unreliable….. the rest of the world considers them to be a reliable news source.
i have a feeling if CNET were to post any pro-ps3 news they would be considered credible again….right? lmao…
