Review: Battlefield 1943 – one of the best online games this year
Online multiplayer games offer a ton of replayability for many gamers out there. Some gamers literally spend over a hundred hours playing against other live players across the globe. Battlefield 1942 is a prime example of such a game. However, with the release of Battlefield 1943, can this remake live up to its predecessor’s reputation?
Battlefield 1943 came out just last week, but I have been playing it nonstop. I thoroughly enjoyed the classic 1942 game back in the day, but the new 1943 version aims to one-up the graphics and physics while still providing a satisfying experience.
Controls
Many newcomers to the series have criticized Battlefield 1943 claiming it looks like a toned-down version of Warhawk. It is true that 1943 offers a limited number of modes/classes and the plane/vehicle controls pale in comparison to Warhawk, but the sheer chaos involved makes the game a different beast altogether. As mentioned, the vehicle controls are a bit rough around the edges but it gets the job done.

The controls for the soldier offer Battlefield’s tried and true feel to aiming and shooting. There are three main weapons a player can choose from, rifle, SMG and sniper. It can get a bit confusing when switching back and forth from “knife” to rifle as you really use the bayonet on the end of the gun in a stabbing motion. Even though there are only three classes or “Kits,” the game keeps it simple enough for newcomers to jump into the game with ease.
Visuals/Design
Borrowing tech from Bad Company, pretty much everything in the world is destructible. You can blow a massive hole into the side of a building and tear down trees with a tank. The visuals are not exactly Killzone 2-esque, but it still looks great for a half a gig downloadable game.

The game was developed for quick pick-up and play experience. The game often creates these hilarious moments that just makes me laugh out loud at the mayhem that ensues during a match. You can strap explosives onto a jeep and drive it straight into a tank becoming an instant tank-killer. Need a hole to hide in? Create one by laying explosives on the ground and make an instant-foxhole.
There is still a bit of difficulty getting into a match, but once you get in, there will rarely be any issues getting disconnected from a game. The game can lag from time to time and you will find yourself being teleported across a hill for some unknown reason. I’ve played on both XBL and PSN at odd times of the day I found it difficult to get into a match on both online services. I am sure EA is hard at work on improving these minor issues.

Wrap-Up
Overall, for $15 Battlefield 1943 offers a satisfying experience that will keep you occupied for countless hours. You will be hard pressed to find any other game for the same price that will offer as much. I highly recommend all gamers to pick up Battlefield 1943.
Score
4/5

“I’ve played on both XBL and PSN at odd times of the day I found it difficult to get into a match on both online services.”
But here is a nice difference. LIVE members have to PAY for shoddy online matches, PSN members don’t….
So this brings me to my next question and my constant gripe with LIVE: Where is your money going? It definitely is NOT going to better servers than the competitions…then why pay???
July 15th, 2009
Its funny, because thats twice I’ve seen complaints about getting into a game and yet I’ve never had any issues getting into a game or with lag. I guess I’m just lucky…
I’d give this a 4/5 also just because that while its a great game, I can see the lack of maps being a bitch in the short term (the ‘new’ map is a dogfight map, kind of meh…).
July 15th, 2009
arg! It was perfect most of the day today but I can’t get into either the XBL or PSN servers right now…kept trying and got into 3 games.
.. too many players trying to play all at once.

jojo, can we not have a thread with flaming for once?
July 15th, 2009
One can dream

You have to say though that there is something to ponder for Sony with the numbers; 43 million kills on 360 yet only 22 million on PS3?
What’s up with that?
I contributed my 14 kills to the PS3 count though

Hmmm, Roca_PSP….

OK, I finally played the demo for Battlefield… I really liked it. It reminded me a lot of a first person WarHawk set in WWII.
I tend to get frustrated and pissed off playing competitive games online, but for some reason, WarHawk was always fun. I could myself enjoying Battlefield a lot. I might have to get this.

@Barnabe,
Yea, I know what you mean. Games like KZ2 you have to invest in leveling up unlocking weapons stratagize with badges, its deep but rewarding.
BF1943 is a fun lite pickup game. Try playing with squads it makes it more fun. You can change your spawning option to do Squad spawn ensuring that you spawn right near your squad mates in the middle of a firefight.

Ant the fact that there are more 360’s than there are PS3’s has nothing to do with the numbers?
The more players the more kills. That is common sense.
July 16th, 2009
Yup, more 360’s, probably a higher ratio of owners on 360 compared to PS3 too…
I’m happy with the PSN, had no problems as of yet
Just hope that when they add the new map you can choose to not play it. Who wants to dogfight for 15 minutes? Bleh.

I changed the config. for aircraft to left stick pitch/roll and right stick to ’strafe’ (yaw?)…
July 17th, 2009
Just not my cup of tea, I prefer a little more depth to my FPS games. Tried out the demo, was not really tempted to download the full game. Still though, it’s not bad for $15.
July 17th, 2009
wow…psn is free and still can’t get more gamers to play this? pathetic…
July 17th, 2009
***ZING ALERT!***
Another PZAZ! from Kev folks!
He’s like a Ninja… In and out before you know it (and the ladies feel it)…
*sigh*
July 18th, 2009
“wow…psn is free and still can’t get more gamers to play this? pathetic…”
Yeah I agree, almost as pathetic as you! Go fly a kite or something! lmao
July 20th, 2009
@SW
So Superman is flying around, shaking off some tension from saving the planet over and over again, and he thinks to himself, “Damn, I’d like to reward myself with some tail right about now”
Just then, using his xray vision, he notices that Wonder Woman is lying on her bed naked, in quit an inviting position. What the hell, he thinks, we used to bang boots back in the day, she won’t mind if I slip in for a quickie!
Using his incredible speed he flies in, bangs away for a split second, and is off again, a much more relaxed, confident Superman.
Wonder Woman opens her eyes, and asks, “What the hell was that?”
“I don’t know, but my ass hurts like hell.” pouts the invisible man.
Kev… pounding invisible ass since ‘07.

jofamang- …and in true ps3 fanboy fashion, you ignore the facts and attack the poster….
it must be killing you the ps3 is failing as badly as it is to lash out at a complete stranger…. lmao….
July 20th, 2009
Only poking fun at the fact that you ninja post and leave.
Anything else you read into it, is, well, your problem, not mine.
July 20th, 2009
The only fact in his entire post is that the PSN is free.
It has nothing to do with how many people play on the PSN. When more of your buddies have 360’s, you’re going to buy it on 360.
Just as Ill rebuy it on PC when it gets released as I happen to know more players who’ll be playing on PC.
July 20th, 2009
sw – you forgot the fact that almost twice as many games have been played on this game on xbl than the (free) PSN….
i realize you don’t know much about this industry, but please refrain pretending to know what a fact is….
July 20th, 2009
Right, and if more people own it on XBL then there are going to be more games played.
Kev, I realize that you don’t have an IQ of over 5, so please, stop pretending to be smart.
Have yourself a good day, Ninja Man.
July 21st, 2009
SW – “IF” more people….?
how do you know more people are on live with this game than the ps3? is it safe to assume now that all 360 owners are on ‘live? sweet…..
you only prove how little you know with each passsing post….lmao…
July 21st, 2009
hey NINJA man, he said there are more 360 out there so it will be right to assume that there are more ppl playing B1943 on live than PSN.
he never said that all 360 owner have live. dumb ass. ohh well that’s his usual ninja post
July 21st, 2009
‘how do you know more people are on live with this game than the ps3?’
Erm, so you’re saying that this game is going to sell less on the 360?!
Did you FINALLY buy into the year of the PS3 hype Kev?
Video game insider, all around Ninja, and now, Sony posterboy. Kev!
Well done.
Oh, and also, show me where I said ‘everyone who owns a 360 is on XBL!’.
Have a nice morning, Ninja Man.
July 21st, 2009
roca – it’s funny how much you clowns have to “assume” when you have no data to work with…
how many 360 versions were sold? how many of those belong to gold subscribers? until you have these numbers, continue to ASS-ume…
after all…it’s all you’re really good at…
point stands: if PSN was better (as you fanboys claim) b/c it’s free, why aren’t there more gamers using it than paying subscribers of xbox live? ouch….
July 21st, 2009
Oh and please don’t try to tell me that someone would’ve purchased this game WITHOUT a gold subscription, because other than the tutorial, there is NO single player component what so ever.
July 21st, 2009
SW – apparently you’re too new to this gaming thing to keep up, but thanks for trying to skew my words…. you succeeded in showing the world how little you know… congrats….lol…
until you guys show some actual data supporting your claim, all you can do is assume….like a good ps3 fanboy does…
July 21st, 2009
What is so difficult with this?.. If you don’t own a PS3 you can’t use the PSN, regardless of the cost… We all know that more people own 360’s, and we’ve all read the MS stuff about the gazillion live users (that will include silvers of course), and we all know how cheap that $50 a year is!, because it usually gets posted here at least once a day!..
If sales of other multiplats are any indication, then it WILL sell more on 360, because, OMG! There are more 360 owners out there.
Or are you saying that more games have been played on XBL because 360 owners are ‘teh hardcore leet. lol. lol’ of gaming and just happen to play twice as much?
Oh Kev, you show you know nothing of gaming with every post. lol. lol. lol. lol. lol. lol. lol. lol. lol. lol. lol.
The more lols, the more in the right *I* am!
Anywhoos, please continue to Ninja around, using your superior industry insider skillz to the maximum. Feel free to drop some more ‘lol bombs’ because with each lol bomb, your post is %10 more correct.
Time to make my post %50 more correct!
Kev is a noob. lol. lol. lol. lol. lol.
Feel free to have the last word here Ninja Man, if you can spare the time in your busy day.
Have a good day… Must be good to a high up in all of those software and electronics companies….. lol.lol.lol.lol.
July 21st, 2009
i have read his post like 5 times, and i still dont know what he is trying to prove.
Maybe he thinks there are more PS3 out there but Live User play twice as much, or mayb he is trying to say XBL user buy games twice just to brag about it.
or he just discover how user with silver accounts can play and “online-only” game offline?
July 21st, 2009
Another invisible ass pounding from super-kev.
The ass is invisible, not the pounding itself. Though as ineffectual he is, it could go either way.
July 28th, 2009
best multiplayer game this year.
