Fat Princess servers "hammered" – How popular is the game?
Its been three days since Fat Princess dropped onto the PSN store last Thursday. The game has been getting a ton of positive feed back from gamers around the globe. However, noticeably the game has been experiencing some connection issues since day one.
As soon as I got home on Thursday, I quickly downloaded Fat Princess off the PSN store and started playing the single player story mode. The story mode is a hilarious mish-mash of silly fairy tale stories with mission objective based gameplay that will get you ready to enter the online battlefield.
However, when attempting to join an online game I noticed that I was not able to connect to an online game. I repeatedly attempted to join, and was finally able to join on my sixth attempt. The first thing I noticed was that game has been improved dramatically from the beta with new modes and features.
The matchmaking system seems to work well, throwing the most amount of live players into a game. However, at times I did end up in a game with only two or three live players on my team and six on the other team. Since the game can hold up to 32 players, you have to be patient and play a couple matches for the session to populate with live players.
I noticed that I was able to get into matches easier during the daytime but it would become horrendous during the evening time, which is probably when everyone decides to jump into the game. According to Titan Studios, the developers of Fat Princess, the connection issues are caused by the sheer amount of players hammering the system at once and some glitches with the matchmaking logic.
It’s good to hear that the game is popular enough to exceed Titan Studio’s server capacity expectations, but it’s not so great for the gamers who have to sit around for a few days waiting for a fix. This reminds me of the same situation with Battlefield 1943, which was practically unplayable for the first few days due to servers being hammered and connection issues.
Titan Studios revealed yesterday that a patch will be incoming to fix all of the connection and lag issues with the game, which is good news for frustrated gamers. The patch has been tested and passed along to Sony for certification so it should be out in a matter of days. “See you on the battlefield!”

On Thursday I was able to use the “jump in” option, but I couldn’t get a game using it yesterday. Phranc is right, if you just start your own game, it usually fills up within a round or so. I played in full games for a full hours straight yesterday.
Roca – Yeah, that makes things a lot easier. Especially on the volcano level.
I just noticed that the rank system isn’t cumulative. You gain rank for each session, then it resets when you play again.

My favorite class has been the priest so far.
draining enemies and giving health to your players has been really beneficial overall.
The ranger seems like a waste.
Mage class is great. The freeze everyone in a cirlce thing is key.

Kev – two words… “Castle Crashers”. That game was broken for months. At least Fat Princes works.
Phranc – rangers are great at long distance attacks. I think the classes are pretty balanced. They all seem to have there ups and downs.

Guys, services like PSN and XBL does not actually host the servers for games like Fat Princess and Gears.
Since games like Fat Princess and Gears are P2P they rely on stat servers to do traffic control which is usually run by the studios.
Services like PSN and XBL act as the gateway between the online service and the studios stat servers.
The only time service is to blame is If you ever have problems signing onto XBL or PSN because its down, which would mean your system would have no gateway access to the studio’s servers anyway.
However the PSN does have an exception from a server perspective since the PSN does utilize dedicated servers for first party games. So, if there is an issue with dedicated servers you could theoretically blame PSN as a whole.
This does not apply to XBL since Microsoft does not use dedicated servers for 1st party titles.
No worries guys, all the server kinks will get worked out in due time like it did for Battlefield 1943.

I’ve read some of the reviews on Metacritic from other reviewers for Fat Princess (current score: 80) and sites like VideoGamer and Eurogamer gave it a 60/100 and their frustration seems to stem from the connection issues with the servers and talk about unbalanced classes.
Sites like IGN, GamePro and GamerLimit gave it 90(+)/100 citing good classes and great strategy.
I won’t be writing a review for Fat Princess until Titan Studios release a fix for all of the connection issues with the server. I have been getting a lot of gameplay but there are still some issues with servers getting full at night time. For online only games I would reserve judgement until all the kinks are worked out.

Yea I can’t agree with Eurogamer and VideoGamer on the unbalanced classes comment.. a lot of gamers do use Mage to spam the circle of fire/ice but their attacks are weaker and they are easier to kill so it balances out…
