PS3 Slim – SKUs dropped, production costs lowered, prices cut
Is a PS3 Slim happening? Although Sony has yet to confirm the existence of a new iteration of the PS3 hardware, the evidence is stacking up. While all the little stories suggesting it’s happening aren’t much on their own, add them all up and you have a body of evidence any lawyer would be happy to use in court.
Rumors of a PS3 Slim have been around almost as long as the Playstation 3 itself. But things got really interesting in May of this year when in the run-up to E3 2009 pictures leaked all across the InterWeb purportedly showing an early version of the hardware. The fact that Sony tried to stamp on the story, instructing Web sites to remove the pictures, implies there was some truth in it.
In the last few days, several more interesting tidbits have flown around the blogosphere, all of which add up to increase the chances of the PS3 Slim being real and just around the corner. Ars Technica has compiled all these little strands together, along with what their own mole told them.
There’s the fact that Sony isn’t sending out any more 80GB PS3s to Japanese retailers after Aug. 9. Which is suspect seeing as the 160GB model isn’t sold in Japan. Then there are the price cuts on the 160GB SKU on Amazon, implying that there is some sort of desire to clear old stock before a new line of Playstation 3 SKUs is introduced.
Digitimes is reporting how orders for the components used to manufacture the PS3 are massively up, while Sony has recently admitted how the production costs of the PS3 have dropped by up to 70 percent. Both of these suggest that not only is a PS3 Slim perfectly plausible in terms of costs but it’s likely to be already in the manufacturing pipeline.
The expected E3 announcement never happened but retail channels are starting to be cleared for something big. Gizmodo expects the PS3 Slim to be unveiled at the Gamescom expo in Germany which begins on Aug. 18.
Nothing is guaranteed in the games industry but this much evidence is hard to ignore. It seems highly likely that a PS3 Slim will be unveiled in the next couple of months and form part of a new set of SKUs with lower price points across the board. Could this be just what the PS3 needs to close the gap on the Xbox 360 and Wii?

I always hated slim PlayStation models even though i got them all, but my favorite 2 are the PS one & them PSP Slim. A slim PS3 better look as stylish as the model out now. I would hated if it looks just like the one in the old rumor fake picture shown above. Also if all this crap is real it will definitely help Sony big time with the obliteration of the Xbox 360 and Wii. A PS3 for $299.99 no one will even thing of buying anything else store will be full 24/7 there will be line after line. All the online stores will need to restock every week. Sony will break the PS1 and PS2 record from the Guinness World Record for best selling console in history if this happens this year. OMG god make it happen.

I am also hoping that the new “firmware” will finally have the backward compatibility among some other cool new things. I don’t play alot of ps2 and 1 stuff but it would be nice to have that option without bugs or glitches.

Yeah I am pretty sure it’s coming, there have been too many reports about it. Would like to see the specs, i.e if they have taken anything out or not, or if they put BC back into it. If they’ve done all of that and the price is right (sub $400 here) then I might consider it. But then again, if you wait till christmas you’ll probably get it even cheaper.

Don’t your PS3 is coming but not with backwards compatibility. If they lower the manufacturing cost to %70 less it might be $299.99 hopefully or $349.99. Sony is making a special PS3 for you. You already know the specs the same beast as the out now. Maybe it will have a 45nm chip or a 32nm chip GPU and CPU.
I have 400 Gigs use all videos aka movie and the entire store mostly add-on and demos. Seagate rules for HDD. My PS3 recognizes my external 1 TB.

Hmmm, I find it hard to believe.
Even if the store release isn’t until a month later (and the Aug 9th date is intended to stoke a little pent-up demand) I can’t understand how come they could keep it quiet this close.
There ought to be scores of pics on the net and there isn’t (excepting that 1 we all saw).
Even Sony supposedly ‘clamping down’ on that one could just as easily be PR BS.
I see Microsoft is alrteady spiking any possible PS3 price cut – the Pro is going and the Elite is going to be the same price as the Pro ($299, assuming they don’t move that figure).
I can’t say as I find $299 a credible PS3 price either.
We’ll see soon enough but don’t be too surprised if, despite all the expectant talk beforehand, yet another show and ‘big date’ pass by without a single damned thing happening.

I’d say there is little chance that a PS3 Slim will have the PS2 chips in it. They are bringing the hardware costs DOWN, and removing PS2 hardware was the first step they took to making PS3 more affordable. Why would they go and add it back in NOW? Don’t get me wrong, I would LOVE IT if they did, but I just don’t see it happening. Regardless, as long as it still plays Blu-ray movies I am very likely to be a buyer. And if it can bitstream out the HD audio codecs from movies, it’ll replace my launch 60GB as my main machine and that original model will move to the secondary TV (that doesn’ have a kick ass audio system anyway).

There’s no chance it will have the PS2 chips back in, but it’s probably more than likely that now PS2 disc based game sales are tanking, a PS2 game store will appear on PSN.
Remove disc based PS2 compatibilty, but put in PS2 compatibilty from titles purchased from PSN.
I think a lot of people, me included, would love a collection of PS2 games stored direct on the hard drive bought from PSN without needing to put in the disc for verification.
And retail can’t get pissed off as some classic PS2 games are now out of print.

I don’t think PS2 games on PSN would cost too much, primarily because they’re no longer at retail (and if they are, they’re not selling) so Sony and publishers can price them how they want.
Look at PSone classics…all once £30-£40 releases, now sitting there for £3.49 – £3.99.
Once more PS2 games go out of print, it’ll probably be the same when they’re put on PSN.

because M$’s studios are not as big as Sony’s Wordwide studios. based on that M$ has capitalized on what they already have, franchise that have a big amoung of fanbase. I mean COME ON besides Alan Wake i dont anything new coming from M$’s first party studios.

Alright I have a question, I might be stupid for not knowing the answer but I’m going to ask anyway. Ok so I just found out that Uncharted and Fall-Out 3 has trophies, now it didn’t when I bought the games so I was wondering when I downloaded the extra content how come the trophies didn’t appear for the stuff I already achieved? Now I already beat both games and have them saved I know I don’t have all the achievements but I know damn well I should have some. So I guess what I’m asking is do I have to replay everthing to get my trophies or is there a way to fix this?

Ivan, if the “PS3 price was just perfect” they would have met their original sales goals and caught back up by now. Both PS1 and PS2 also had new optical disc formats incorporated that improved quality, the only difference with this one is it is their own. They just made a miscalculation and have wound up last in sales overall because of it.

They forgot what they did before with PS1 and PS2 and tried to force all those things the consumer doesn’t necessarily want or need into a game console and charge extra for it. Why would somebody pay for something they don’t use, or is already being done better by another device which they do?
They would have sold at least twice as much with just BR, BC, and USB and been able to do it at a much lower price point as they had before. Everything else could be added in the future at an extra cost if the consumer decided they wanted/needed it.

HD is nice, and also available on 360 without Blu-ray. We do not “all” need Blu-ray because it is already being replaced and becoming obsolete. If I ever need media card support I can use it via a $5 card reader. I already use Firefox on my laptop, thank you. Why on earth do we all need Home? I am already glad to be saving money with Gold and Netflix HD streaming as compared to my old 2 disc at a time subscription alone with Netflix. The 360’s being made now are just as reliable as PS3 and have just as much value if not more. 360 is $200 and that is half the price of a PS3. Plus no one wants to pay for something they are not going to use and do not need to play good games, the greater number of which are on 360.

Hahaha CharlieB. It just does not make sense, actually the whole browser thing in a console does not make sense. Have you ever tried typing a web address with a console controller? It takes forever. You could plug a keyboard and mouse into the USB slots, but it kinda defeats the purpose.

Well is easy to type on the PS3 and so far i only use the web browser to watch GameTrailers TV YouTube and used to visit Hulu always fast and reliable for me. Ghost, I meant value as a games console, not a proprietary format player. Also, get a couple more decades of life under your belt and you will see how media formats become obsolete over time. Remember I said “becoming” not “is”.

@ Ivan, Typing on Home takes forever, by the time you type a message more than 3 words long the other person has already walked away. I don’t want the 360 to have a web browser, I’ll leave my web browsing to my computer.

Anyway, I have indeed used Home and it does indeed take forever to type something in with a gamerpad, as it does when writing a message with the 360 gamerpad, unless you own a messenger pad or whatever they call it.

Just for the record, Harry, I DO use the PS3s browser A LOT. My roommates never leave the computers, so when my gf and I want to look something up real quick (IMDB, address, phone number, movie times, etc) the PS3 browser is a life saver.
However, it’s certainly not practical for “normal” web browsing.

I’ve never used Bing.
I have not ever said that the PS3 was less reliable, however an unsubstantiated blog from one guy does not confirm that the Jasper is as unreliable as it’s predecessors. My point was that there are more reports of the yellow light of death and blu ray drive error than Jasper RRoDs.

As for the ($200) Xbox 360 Jasper i haven’t had a lot of problems only that the power brick die other then that is still working fine. My brother has it, Is no use to me. The yellow light never has happen to me i have the ($921) 60gb since January 21, 2007 i use it hardcore at least 12 hours daily on a hot room no with no place to get cold air. My used 80gb is still working wonderful and yes it plays PS2 also is the MotorStorm Bundle which i got from eBay from $350. How did you get the fact that Xbox 360 Jasper chip has less problem then the PS3 system?. I haven’t had any problems with Blu-ray not even on my VAIO PC.
