Modern Warfare 2 DLC and price hike FUBAR
As a big fan of the Call Of Duty games, I’m saddened to have to report I may be giving Modern Warfare a miss. The reasons aren’t anything to do with the gameplay or graphics, or even boredom with the genre. Instead, they are about the ridiculous way in which Activision has decided to rinse us all for a huge payday.
The Call Of Duty games are, for the most part, fantastic, and the best ever would have to be Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The game was a breath of fresh air in the first-person shooter genre, which has become rather bogged down with titles set in World War II. So when Modern Warfare 2, a direct sequel to the original Modern Warfare, was announced I was very pleased.
The preview footage of the game looks good, with another engrossing storyline, nice-looking graphics, and that same gameplay that few of us would change in any way. And then Activision announced the price of the game in the U.K. Modern Warfare 2 will retail for £54.99 when it is released ($90) in November. That’s £5 more than the RRP of the first game and a full £15 more than the vast majority of new titles.
Activision defended the move with some BS about the recession, poor hardware sales, and the exchange rate of the pound. None of which matters a jot to gamers who want to buy the product and are being asked to pay well over the odds to do so. Basically because Activision is greedy.
But it gets worse. Activision today revealed that it’s already working on two map packs for Modern Warfare 2, both of which will be released as DLC soon after the release of the full game. If you’re willing to pay for them of course because it seems Activision likes dipping its fingers into our pockets and extracting as much cash as possible.
This annoys me because developing DLC map packs prior to release Activision is basically leaving content out of the full game in order to release extras and rake in even more cash afterwards. Which is not what DLC should be about. DLC should be about adding something to a retail release of a game that couldn’t be included at the time (like with Grand Theft Auto IV), or game changing extras given away for free (like with Unreal Tournament 3 or Burnout Paradise).
Activision is trying to shaft each and every fan of the Call Of Duty series with these moneymaking efforts. Those of us in the U.K. are clearly getting a worse deal than those in other countries but none of it’s good. So I’m declaring myself out, at least until the game drops in price to a reasonable level.

Gotta hand it to ‘em tho, they know what they’re doing.
Everyone I knew was showing thier ‘o-face’ when they watched the multiplayer trailer (The ac-130 made me spooge my boxers twice). Every clan under the sun that played CoD4 is going to buy this (mine will), and sooner or later you’re going to get pulled in and buy it too if the rest of your gaming buddies play it.
I thought about posting saying that ill hold out until the price drops. But meh, I’m going to be at the store on release day picking it up like every last sucker here
The same goes with the map packs, I play with a bunch of older guys who have $$$, they will splash out on the map packs so I will HAVE to buy it in order to continue playing.
Sucks, but oh well…

I for one will not be jumping on this game from day one mainly because I’m not that intrested in playing online for this game. I will try it but I really didn’t get into the first MWF. The campaign is great and that’s all I’m looking for but I’m not in a rush for this game. The greater price point is just ludacris so I’ll make that another reason. But Mike really there is no point in getting all rilled up about DLC that is created prior to release. There going to do it anyway so who cares about when they start production. The whole point of DLC is to keep your game fresh so just be happy that your getting something new to add to your game after you have exhausted what’s on the disk. Besides before Xbox startd doing this on consoles this was never heard of. I Love getting new DLC because it keeps the game going and your not stuck waiting for the next installment of the game. Get with the times Mike! It’s not that big of a deal.

I hear they got rid of the spawners in this game and improved the AI and such so I may play thru it, but I am more interested in the hours of online play this badboy is going to give me.

And as for your comment for Burnout the content comes on the disc but to access them you gotta pay which is as bad so i guess EA and Activision both suck. Some one should make a petition. It’s perfectly simple.
This is a kite-flying exercise to see what the market will bear (capitalism at work, it’s just business nothing personal).
Personally I think games are laughably over-priced as it is and that you’ve got to be a bit of a mug to buy games at full price on release.
Unless you’re incredibly impatient you only have to wait & give it a while & the price will end up being discounted heavily somewhere.
Yes you miss out on being in the 1st wave of owners but so what?
If the games any good it’ll still be just as good when you get it.
I’ve yet to pay more than £20 for any game and I can’t think of a single good reason to break the habit.

Here’s the deal. Activision, just as well as Sony, knew that people would pay extra money for their product at this price, so they release it at launch at that price. The price will come down, no doubt, but they will take advantage of those who have the extra time and/or cash who really just have to have it before then (for whatever reason).

Facts are facts and just because you own a console that pretty much ripped off feature for feature everything the 360 already had that your $800 launch console did not have until it slowly became a 360 with every update is just lame. The only innovation Sony ever brought to the table was using CD then DVD and now Bluray and the playstation camera and we all know the reason behind the format pushing. It really had nothing to do with the games. And I also agree with HH: about waiting a little while and getting a better deal for a game somewhere else. For example one of my favorites is the “God of War” series and when they come out with the third I would like to have the Box-set, but if they try and pull this Activision shit with it price wise then they can keep the damn box-set and I will treat it like any other game and wait untill I find a better deal.

MW2 is not that big of a game…a solid multiplayer thats about it…graphics are outdate (not for x360) but they are solid.
I would expect Square Enix to raise the price on FFXII or what ever…but wtf is activsion thinking? raising the price in a FPS…..plus MW1, WaW and MW2 look the same with a couple of new perks and xp system.

Well if you read my post , I stated that I didn’t know who had the first DLC on consoles & clearly stated that I was talking about PC. XBox 360 is like buying a game console for games. If you want to bring the car analogy into it, then it’s like buying an SRT-4 ($19,000 new at the time) instead of a 350Z ($35,000 new at the time) because you primarily would like to have the fastest sports car (0-60 and top speed) for your money, not some branded bs and some bells and whistles for more money.

Sony said it, not I, and my particular reason is time, not money. Even if it was, why get a second job when you could get a console that was half it’s price originally and did a better job on the majority of games?
Even if you did get a second job to get a second console you wouldn’t have time to play the handful of exclusive games it offers because of what you were already enjoying on your first purchase, let alone the fact you are working longer.

That’s right, Microsoft did make a big push to bring much of what PC gaming did right (HDD, DLC, quality ports, etc.) to home consoles. I’m into a/v so I already had the dual format high def player.
Unlike many if not most here I also have the audio kit to make full use of the new audio.
(which I use properly, via HDMI cabling and not using an optical link one of our star posters here laughably recommended here recently, right Roca……cor, you’re worth liostening to for advice about all of this, huh? LMAO)

Don’t get so worked up over it. I understood and actually agree with the main point of your post, we just have different opinions about how it can sometimes parallel in the console world, and not just this generation of videogames. The PS3 costs more because it “offers more stuff” you don’t need to play games.
I don’t hate Sony, they’re great (tony the tiger accent) and I truly enjoy my PS2, PSP, PSN, and maybe sometime in the near future even a PS3. The only criticism I have have with PS3 now is that it offers that “stuff” to consumers built in and charges extra for it, whether they need it or not. Just because I am able to criticize a product doesn’t mean I “hate” it.
By “better job on the majority of games” I mean more favorably reviewed titles are on it (almost 3 times as many: blorge.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=95 ) and that more ports have been inferior in the past on PS3 rather than 360 (Ghostbusters being the latest example).
I also see what you are saying about the features, so fair enough, you may or may not use all of them in the future (nobody can predict it after all). For your point on Blu-ray, even adding another $100 would still bring it to only $299, $100 less than the current price, but maybe that will change soon.

But Sony didnt add $300 free they actually gave you a damn Blu-ray player that was needed no matter what plus a free online service support for 3 major card slots full Linux support 1080p HD resolution the ability to use laptop HDD.
You do know that every console generation they raise the game prices by $10.

Thanks but I know perfectly well what the minimum spec requirement is……this was in fact one aspect to the PS3 which interested me, until I found out how slow and gimicky it was & far too limited to be of serious use.
Quit being such a blind fanboy, this is possibly the one prime and interesting aspect to the PS3 and when it came to it they deliberately choked it off.
That’s why so few bother with it & it is not a strong PS3 attraction
(except for the usual fanboy gang who love to shout about these kinds of specs without really using or understanding them).

The PS3 has a couple (3?) and the Xbox has 1 right now with (IIRC) one or two others on the way for both.
Besides that non-event they are both perfectly capable of showing 1080p video.

I never said HDMI was only for TV. I was just saying without optical disc you cannot used the same HDMI cable to split between your TV and your surround sound. but since you have a HDMI spliter/reciever u can do that (thats is what ur trying to prove..you can split the HDMI with a spliter lol). but obviosly that all that cost you more money (as always the xbox360 making ppl spend more).
and Optical cable is as good as there is for Audio output.
