Gamers at fault for letting Valve and Activision shaft them (Xbox 360/PS3/PC)
Lately the headlines seem to be filled with news of gamers being angry with video game companies. The two companies that have been in the news lately the most are Activision and Valve. It has been a while since a game company has garnered this much criticism and hate in the past several years.
The game industry is an ever evolving market segment that has been historically fickle. Several decades ago, video game giants such as Atari and ColecoVision pretty much ran the gaming industry into the ground and since then game companies have been catering to the whims of the gamers.
However, this generation it seems like that many of the game companies are calling the shots and ignoring the gamers. The mentality seems to have shifted from catering to the gamers to demanding that gamers play by the company’s rules.
Activision has recently been receiving much criticism from gamers for its decision to jack up the price of Modern Warfare 2 to $59.99 for the PC, from the standard price of $49.99. Modern Warfare 2 will also be the most expensive console game (PS3/Xbox 360) in Europe costing close to $100 USD ($54.99 GBP/$91.90 USD). Many have started to blame Activison’s CEO Bobby Kotick for this bold move considering his recent comment where he indicated that he would raise the prices more if he could.
Valve is another company that has come under fire recently over Left 4 Dead. Besides the fact Valve announced L4D2 only several months after releasing L4D late last year, the company also announced that there will be a massive DLC campaign released for L4D right before L4D2 drops. The controversy gets even dicer as it has been confirmed that the massive DLC will be free to PC gamers but Xbox 360 owners will have to pay for it.
As an owner of L4D on the Xbox 360, this news has me a bit irritated as well. I do not understand the logic behind the decision to make the PC DLC free yet 360 owners will have to pay 560 MS Points.
I’m sure many of our readers are sick of hearing about these issue but its something that needs to get voiced. Some gamers might make some excuse for these companies, but it really is the responsibility of the gamers to complain about such issues. When companies decided to raise the price ceiling of XBL games with Braid and Castle Crashers to $15, the fact that they sold well with very little vocal complaints indicated that this new price point was fine.
According to Gameindustry.Biz, other publishers have started to follow Activision’s price hike in Europe. ShopTo boss Igor Cipolletta stated:
Whether planned, or a case of jumping on the popular franchises [Activision] bandwagon, we have seen Microsoft increase the price of Forza 3 to GBP 49.99 ($83.55 USD) and Nintendo increase the price of Professor Layton [and Pandora's Box] to GBP 34.99 ($58.48 USD)… I sincerely hope that not all publishers will follow this lead.
In the US, we are already seeing such a price hike for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2, which is a first for the ailing PC gaming industry. The bottom line is if gamers do not voice their complaints, companies like Activision may decide to bring the price hike for console games to the US as well.

Hell yeah they are going to raise prices if we all just sit back and keep buying there games. The same goes for any product or even a goverment? They know most people want say shit, and some will just bitch to friends and want do anything, they know most people are sheep and are either to shy and just go with the flow or just plain chicken-shit to Stand-Up for themselves and there rights. This really pisses me off and it’s only going to get worse.

I think you’ll find some people just don’t care.
It all depends on what price you put on entertainment. An added 5 quid (10$CAD for me I suppose) is hardly a killer. Ill just make a home cooked meal this friday night instead of ordering a pizza.
And its not as if my brain is going to magically ‘reset the cost of games’ to this new price, its not like next year they will add another $10 and another and another, and so on. There is a breaking point. $10 aint it.
It cost what? $12 for a ticket to cineplex here for a 2 hour movie. Ill get at least 100 times the value from MW2 so I don’t get the fuss.
Anywhoos, i don’t think theres THAT much of a debate here. I, like most/all of my clan will buy this release day, others will give a few months till the price drops. Activision wins, you win, I win. Everyone wins for now…

-Flooded the market with Guitar Hero Games. Fans become uninterested and stop buying.
-Pissed a lot of people off with the frivolous lawsuit agaisnt Brutal Legend, also tried to block Ghost Busters.

Its not just 5 pounds Activision increased MW2 to, its 10 pounds.
MW2 is now $54.99 GBP which equals $91.90 US dollars.
Almost a $100 for a freaking Xbox 360 or PS3 game!
Msft bumbed Forza 3 to $83.55 US dollars in Europe recently as well up from $75 bucks.
Times are tough globally, and many companies have axed bonuses and raises this year squashing any adjustment to cost of living. I can see $70 standard priced games coming to the US in the near future.

Well I have to agree. We have to stop buying the games at those prices. The price of games has gone up and the price of consoles has too. If we continue to feed the habit they will keep doing it to us. It’s bad enough that their making extra $ off DLC and now they want to raise the price of the games. The fault lies on online gaming. It has invoked this whole new attitude towards game development and has created greater greed in the industry. Basically it created another avenue into our wallets. This is all Segas fault for starting the whole online gaming but I do like it but we should not allow them to exploit us.

Like I said, no one is going to have thier brains ‘reset’ next year and think 55 quid is the new norm for games, there IS a limit that people are willing to pay. I’m willing to pay the extra $$$ THIS time thats all. I wouldn’t go much over what it is now, and it would also depend on the game (MW2 already has the multiplayer credibility from CoD4).
@Mike – Sorry man, not really down with the prices of games over there anymore… All I can remember is paying 50 notes for Mortal Kombat 3 (may have been ultimate mk) a looooong time ago, I just assumed things were still at the 50 quid mark.
MW2 is still $70 on futureshop.ca’s website (and $60USD on gamestops) – which is the same price as all thier other new games. Go figure. Console people should just preorder the game right now so you’ve got your price set in stone… Maybe thats activisions plan… (Ill be buying this baby for PC)
And of course you can vote with your wallets if you so wish. I would too if the game were going to be $90+ CAD.

If you own a PC or Xbox 360 you can download the game free and burn it so you save as long as your Xbox 360 is hacked/flash you good. Also Also there’s better games to buy like UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves for PS3 or Halo 3: ODST for Xbox 360 or MotorStorm: Arctic Edge and Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier for PS2 and PSP or Wolfenstein PS3 PC Xbox 360. Forget Call Of Duty: Modern Ware 2 for a couple months.

Can anyone say storm in a teacup? Seriously, if you don’t want to pay a higher price for the game, JUST DON’T BUY IT. Pretty simple really. If activision see their sales tumble they will change their minds pdq. as for L4D2, what is the big deal. So they announced a sequel to a popular game a few months after its release, with the game slated for release a year later. Where exactly is the problem? That is pretty standard practice for any game franchise. Guess what, there is going to be a sequel to LBP as well, and Gears of War, and Uncharted and… If you don’t want to play it, DON’T BUY IT.

I see your point, Rimmer. The issue I have with the L4D DLC (gotta love the abbreviations) is that it’s free for PC yet chargeable for 360. I don’t know whether this is Microsoft’s of Valve’s doing, however I hope this follows the trend of Halo 3, Gears, Forza 3 and becomes free after a few months.

I remember the moans and noise when £45 PS1 games appeared
(often IIRC from those ‘great guys’ EA).
I recall the whining and crying when that price-point became ‘normal’ with the PS2.
The surprise this time around is that its taken them so long to push their luck & chance their arm at lifting prices further.
The answer to this is simple.
Stop rushing like idiots to buy games on initial release.
They always and without fail get discounted in 6 – 12mths.
It’s the same game, it’ll all still be there.
If you’re not prepared to do that then you can hardly complain about the capitalist system for doing what it does, charging what the market will bear.
These guys are not your friend.
They are there to maximise the returns for their shareholders, investors & owners.
IMO our obligation ought to be to maximise our own returns and extract max value.
It is up to you whether you describe that ‘value’ as being in first and playing a game from day 1 or holding on to as much of your own dosh as possible and waiting on the discounts.
The one thing you can’t have (unless you know someone in the trade) is both.
Besides letting off some steam & ranting a bit this seems a bit of a pointless one to me, everyone surely knows what’s going on & what to do…..

Amazon UK has Forza 3 for £38, Prof. Layton is £28…seems pretty standard to me. MW2 is £45, but then it’s not like games haven’t been £45 before.
I remember in the UK when Atari insisted Driv3r should be a £45, and that game was utter shite. At least with MW2 you know it’s going to be quality game.

Activision is going crazy with the game prices…and also milking games.. 5 Guitar Hero games in one year is ridiculous. they just desperate because Rockband took their No.1 Spot in the Music genre.

Socom Confrontation was pretty horrid from release. Gameplay wasn’t the issue, provided you could actually get into a game, or stay in one long enough to get a feel. Online only hurt this title, as owners had NOTHING to do with the money spent while the game was being sorted out (which took months in itself). The game dev is Slant 6, and they are not new to socom, as they were responsible for the excellent SOCOM:FTB series on the PSP. I was actually playing the other night, and am thoroughly glad that I didn’t sell the game, as it is a real fucking gem now.
Lots of people bought it for the $20 Sony BT headset(60 bundle, 40 wihtout), so you could probably find a copy in a bin or pawn shop for 10-30 bucks. If you get it we’ll have to get in on some action.

I hate SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation because it feels like another game not a SOCOM game. You can’t even view the character in full third person like the other SOCOM not even on the PSP can you view your whole body. SOCOM 1 & 2 have the best menu. Sony should release a new PS3 SOCOM game by Zipper Interactive with all the modes maps and weapons from all SOCOM games. The main game should be like SOCOM 1 in graphics or 2 and the menu like SOCOM 2 the rank from SOCOM 2. The same controls from SOCOM 1 & 2 in 1080p with trophies and in Blu-ray Disc bundle with a headset. Also with Co-Op and a party system and background music also 7.1 Surround Sound. Also mods like Unreal Tournament III. I will pay any price for that game any. SOCOM is the game i love the most. The game should still just be 16 vs 16 and 8 vs 8 for small maps with no glitches.

Ghost, I am only referring to the games specifically created for the 360, so that includes Halo 3, Halo Wars, Gears of war 1 & 2. Combined they have sold 22.3 Million (vgchartz). The 8 PS3 games raked in 22.4 Million combined (vgchartz).

Considering there is no other reliable source of global sales figures available to us, I will take VGchartz’s word over yours. Furthermore, those statistical inaccuracies apply to both 360 and PS3 figures, so they still allow for pretty accurate comparison.
The figures don’t include sales for the PC, as those are listed separately. Which is academic anyway, as only one of those titles has been available of the PC anyway.

Ivan, you might want to acually read my post – I said there was one game that had been released on the PC as well as the 360, which is Gears of war. Halo 1 &^ 2 were not released on the 360 specifically, so I did not count them into my figures. Of course SCEA counts their sales, but they don’t offer 360 sales figures, do they, so their figures are meaningless if you want to compare. VGchartz is hardly rock solid in their figures, but they are at least unbiased, so they are usable figures, providing you accept that there is a margin of error in them.

i haven’t heard too many gamers whine about Activisions or Valve’s pricing… i have, however, heard many, many, many whine about sony’s hardware pricing… .
RIMMER – Great job. I forgot about how poorly the ps3’s exclusives are selling…. it’s funny that the ps3 fanboys claim all the 360 has to play is halo and GeOW…. the fact that the 360 has a higher attach ratio than the ps3 discredits this claim 100%…..

The Xbox 360 has maybe a higher attach rate for multiplatform games LMFAO how sad. And the PS3 exclusives are selling great even PSN games Gran Turismo Prolouge has sold 3.94 Million copies.All you have is Halo and Gears of War well that’s all you people talk about. EA makes more money on PS3.

THe reason the PCs DLC is free is quite simple: PC gamers are not going to pay for DLC…like i’ve said, PC gamers, are quite different, they don’t let themselves get shafted…
