PS3 vs. Xbox 360 – New price cutting war on way
The Wii cannot now be beaten this generation. But the PS3 and Xbox 360 are still pushing for that second place, with the aim to sell as many consoles between now and the birth of the next generation. I think a good old-fashioned pricing war is well overdue, and there’s one due to arrive by the end of this year.
I think we’re all pretty much agreed that the Wii has this generation sewn up. Nintendo has earned enough money from its underpowered, over-hyped little white box that each and every executive at the company could wipe their ass with $100 dollar notes and the supply would never run out. But that still leaves a battle for second place well and truly up for grabs.
There are going to be a few different factors coming into play when it comes to deciding which console out of the PS3 and Xbox 360 secures second place behind the Wii. Games, particularly exclusive titles, are very important. As are the extra features each console carries, such as a Web browser, Netflix streaming, and the quality of online play. But pricing also has its place.
The Xbox 360 has had this area all to itself for the past couple of years. The PS3 has arguably been overpriced since release and continues to be to this day. While Microsoft has made price cuts galore to keep the Xbox 360 competitive with the Wii as well as being considerably cheaper than the PS3. Both consoles could be about to get further movement on price.
The PS3 Slim is all but confirmed now, with the evidence stacking up by the day. An official announcement is expected next week at GamesCom in Germany. A new lower price point for the hardware is almost guaranteed, and this could coincide with the bigger versions of the console also getting significant price cuts.
Meanwhile, Kotaku reports that Microsoft is doing away with the Xbox 360 Pro at the end of August and replacing it with the Xbox 360 Elite at the same price point. The Arcade could also see a modest price cut to push home Microsoft’s casual gaming advantage.
Any pricing war is likely to be accompanied by new marketing pushes by both sides in the run-up to the holiday season. So it looks as though the PS3 vs. Xbox 360 battle which has quietened down in recent months is well and truly back on. Let the fun and games commence.

KEvo : A ps4th at $300 is more appealing than a 360 at $150? I don’t see $150 worth of desirable difference between the two.
I know the sony fanboys will do the usual blu ray this and exclusive that, but for me MS would get my money.
Graphically (which seems so important?!) the price difference is not evident.
Personally I think the places are set for this generation. I cant see sony doing a massive sales surge based on there exclusives that people keep touting about. Most people that take note of sony exclusives will have a ps4th already. Likewise with the 360. It now just comes down to getting the neutrals on board, and that will be roughly a 50/50 split.

Well it will put the PS3 and 360 on a level price field at $299 (presumably), so if the slim doesn’t sell, that’s when Sony need to be concerned.
All we need to know now is what the final design looks like. It’s too bad that they’ll be getting rid of the touch sensitive glass buttons…they are well funky.

Andrew hit the nail on the head. Most fans of either platform already have their console, the neutrals who don’t don’t know about upcoming games etc. Sure there is a % of people who are considering buying the other machine to compliment their first machine, me included, but the majority of sales from here till the holidays are going to be neutrals.

I will have to agree with that, just because there alot of ppl out there (including 360 owner) that been holding up untill the system comes down to a resonably price. the Xbox is already cheap. even buy used there is a big differece between the xbox and the PS3

The fact is that a 120gb Elite for the price of the old 60gb Pro is a large & very solid move (bigger hard drive & effectively a $100 price cut – at least) that just shot Sony’s fox good and proper.
(whatever that may be, its not even as if anyone actually knows what Sony’s move will be yet)
Naturally you’ll be pretending a (probably relatively pretty minor) price cut and a slim version (with perhaps a lower spec/ability?) will see PS3 storm to the top of the sales charts.

I wonder how much cheaper the arcade can go down? That I believe would be the real kicker for the 360. I always fealt that, that was where MS was gaining its market share while losing money on hardware.
Quite frankly…an Elite with twice the HDD space than a PS3 at the same price, still looks pale in comparison to a built in blu ray player. Take into account that you can switch that HDD out for something three times the size of the 360 HDD in the Ps3 for the price of a game and you get win.

All I’m going to say is that I agree with Andrew DS that the positons are pretty much locked in and will remain that way till the end of this generation. But there is more intresting facts to look at. It was reported earlier that 360 has now passed the PS2 in useage minuites. When I heard this I realized that the Amazing # of PS2 sold is an overblown # because we all know that the PS2 was bought over and over through the years because most of them broke down and they were replaced. Given that I believe that the max number of people who will buy consoles has reached it’s max and that it’s the neutrals now and the cross buyers that are left. So basically like I said the positoins are pretty much locked down.

There’s so much fail going on right there. $149-$199 is where a console sells the most. Neither the Wii or PS3 are yet at those price points. The 360 is, but who knows what the sale ratio between Elite/Pro/Arcade is.
I think the Arcade will disappear over the next year, and MS will make the Elite the only SKU.

I think it should be pretty interesting. The price cut/slim & GOW 3 & GT 5 should help to move some serous units.
Sure M$ is cutting the price also, but they don’t have any huge game releases in the near future.

2.5″ HDDs vary in height, they are not all the same (there was an issue with the existing PS3 caddy being able to take all of them).
The slim (if it comes) may well have an issue.
Have to laugh at the SSD idea……it would make Microsoft’s 120gb proprietary drive – at it’s release price – look cheap.

Now considering the 70% is taken off the initial estimate of the production cost at time of launch between $800-900 that would place the current production cost somewhere between $240-300. Considering that you have to add licensing costs to that (HDMI, Bluray, DVD etc), as well as shipping costs and a profit margin for the retailer, $299 is awfully optimistic. I suspect $349 is much more realistic.

Happy, The numbers refer to Megabit per second (Mbps) or Megabyte per second (MB/s). One is used as a data transfer measure, whereas the other usually refers to storage capacity. There are 8 bits to a byte, so 480Mbps is actually 60MB/s. Whoever thought this up needs their head examining.

I have read that the Arcade does not sell well and from this I’ expect the best selling model to be the current 60gb Pro.
Selling the 120gb Elite at the 60gb Pro price is bound to improve sales.
I know some of you guys don’t want to believe it but hard lines, they really did just give Sony a major boot in the danglies.

I bought an SSD for my computer, and tested it out on the PS3 for a few days before formatting for OS/Game install duty in the gaming rig.
It is so fucking impressive, I just ordered another one just for the PS3 (A 120gb to replace the 60gb in the computer, putting the 60 back into the PS3, heh). Load times on ALL games are cut by at least 50%, well higher on some. SFIV loads rounds in about 3sec, compared to the 10-15 installed I was experiencing with my 320gb 7200rpm drive.
It is expensive, and I was going to wait until the prices dropped more to get a dedicated SSD for the PS3, but going back to the 320 felt like punishment, hah.

Your PS3 is garbage so just accept it. How is the PS3 a better deal when it has a bunch of New Ip’s that will take forever to come out plus they are new so they’re not even proven. Your online is no where next to LIVE and that is considering that it’s free but then again so is LIVE you just have to pay to play online. Every service offered on PSN is a rip off of LIVE. You have on overpriced Bluray with a 360 inside, almost. The games on 360 are better, they look better and offer more. I don’t expect you to understand because until you have a 360 you will not know what your missing. The better deal is the 360 and were not asking for an arm or a leg.

Roca / Ivan, I paid £129 for my 360 Pro 60gb, plus about £6 for a set of rechargable batteries. Add to that about £8 for a long ethernet cable and that is pretty much all my expenses. Total expenditure: £143. Why should I spend more than twice that on a games console that offers me the same gaming experience? If I want Bluray I will get a standalone machine that has bitstream output and a proper remote control. If I want to access photos or music I simply connect to an external USB hdd or stream them directly from my laptop. So no need to install a larger HDD.

I didn’t even have to buy the network adapter, I chose to.
I use powerplug-networking in my house, I could easily have used a cable, I just thought the adaptor was neater and it saved me having to bother swapping cables to the plug socket with the LG Blu-ray player’s network connection.
XBL live, well free is always nice of course, but whilst I agree with you CON the truth is I honestly do believe what I say to the PS3 guys, it’s pennies a day and I don’t miss them or really care that much about it.

Yeah I know that’s the US, which is the largest country in terms of gaming. However the only numbers we get from Asia are Japan, who would outsell the 360 by around 6-8000 units, hardly a dent in the lead. The rest of Asia don’t really have much of a presence.
By what I read, the UK has the 360 outselling the PS3, and the remainder of Europe is pretty much neck-a-neck.

The number of kids sitting listening to a cheapo supposedly HD receiver and their cheap cr@ppy speakers who thing they are hearing lossless audio cos a little light came on and the sound got a little bit louder is hilarious.

The cheap sh*t he buys probably does only manage to pass-through with no bitstreaming & decoding.
Let’s face it, when you’re listening to standard Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 you’re probably ahead of most people anyways.
People usually watch movies for the movie, not spotting pretty irrelevant additional detail……and that is why you are 100% correct, most just aren’t that ar$ed about HD.
They do like a flat panel TV, for its looks (which wis why the awful early ones sold at all) …..but even there most, according to the last US numbers out, are buying 32″ – 42″ sets that are 720p/1080I res.

I remember my dad going out and buying a new flatscreen for their living room. I remember him insisting on it being 1080p because he read that it was the best. So he buys a 1080p 42″ LCD and then mounts it on the far wall of the livingroom, about 25 feet away from the seating area. Duh. Now he can’t read the onscreen menu from the sofa because the text is so small. These are the sort of people Bluray needs to convince.
On a different note, is it just me, or has the number of DVD releases with DTS sound plummeted since Bluray / HDDVD came out? Me smells a conspiracy rat. No where is my tinfoil hat?

You are totally backwards. I have had many Alienware Laptops and a buddy of mine has the Desktop. Alienware is total garbage. I also have a few HP laptops and the $3000 HP played Farcry and Doom 3 WAY better then the $5000 Alienware laptops. The company I worked for purchased 12 Alienware laptops and 8 Died within warranty and then again just out of warranty (one year) And Alienware took forever to repair them. I still have 3 at my place. I’m thinking about seeing if I can find someone local to repair them. My buddy tried but they couldn’t find parts for the one model.
So HP beats Alienware hands down for product and service!
The desktop is still going but I don’t know how well it plays games because I didn’t get to try it. It’s huge and looks cool though.

-Theres nothing wrong with new IP’s In fact 360 has been doing well with new IP’s as well. They also have that little problem of getting them out the door. See Alan Wake and Huxley.
-Live sucks. You know you rather have in be free. Pay to play online, and with no First party IP’s getting dedicated servers.
-Xbots cry about blu ray and how to ps3 is not a game machine while at the same time holding their tongue as the 360 get a HDDVD addon and Multimedia abilities similar.
-The games offered are the same and at least theres first party games to look forward to. How great will it be for 360 users when the only difference between the 360 and the ps3 are that ps3 gets more games and 360 can only manage to get DLC for games that are on both.

I’ve never “cried” about the PS3 having Blu-ray…..it was for me one of the few originally attractive things about PS3.
Now it merely helps explain a part of the reason how come it’s doing so badly.
Sony trying to sew up the next DVD was always something to be very wary of and indeed they have managed to f*ck it up completely and now HD movies on disc are guaranteed to fail to take over from DVD.
This is nothing like quite the same thing as my 1st point.
You’ve also managed to miss out the fact that when both systems offer much the same games the Xbox does it for far less money and (despite not having the benefit all that imagined ‘power’) the Xbox version of games usually turn out to be the better ones.
Multi-media is attractive to me and all that media hub stuff used to be held up as a PS3 strong-point.
I find it amusing and interesting how it’s Xbox now being bashed for that.
Perhaps it’s because PS3 has nothing over Xbox to offer there?

I’m not bashing the 360 for multimedia abilities…. Just bashing the hypocrisy of users when not even given the ps3 the title of game machine because of its added features.
Quite frankly….more is better.
Every now and then the poor ps3 users have to put up with knowing that a certain multiconsole release looks slightly better on the 360. Most of the time the only way to tell the difference is with freeze frame gametrailers comparisons. At the same time theres those great first parties to look forward to and they at least seem to get it.

Xbox 360 is like a upgrade Xbox 1 LMFAO pure crap PS2 has better games. Xbots shut the fuck up already and Alienware is awesome. I didn’t pay just in case you ask. Xbox 360 has nothing on PS3 period. We got more and better must have exclsuives that would never be on PC and none of them are timed exclusives. We get all Xbox 360 exclusive what it had left and all their crappy DLC that they paid to have first stupid i know. Also we save more then them because we don’t need to buy a fucking charger or wifi or a bigger hard drive. We don’t need to send our console for repair every 2 months. All our PS3 had Blu-ray and a HDMI with a free online service that kicks serious ass. 5.1 7.1 and 8.1 Surround Sound.

The early Blue lasers had a very finite life-span.
Those who make a lot of use of their PS3 as both a game player and disc video player may well come to regret their choices.

I suspect the 2 are not unconnected.
I have a late Falcon Xbox which has never so much as frozen up on me.
So tales that mine is built badly and the PS3 is built so much better just do not wash with me.
