July NPD sales figures – DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PSP, PS3 & PS2 all down
Just a few months ago we all agreed that the video games industry seemed to be recession-proof, providing retail strength in the face of every other entertainment sector collapsing. But that clearly isn’t the case, and the Nintendo DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PSP, PS3, and PS2 all dropping in July according to NPD.
It actually looks as though the video games market is running a few months behind the rest of the retail sectors. While all around we were seeing significant falls in sales, video games were bucking the trend. Now the opposite is true, with the first signs of a recovery occurring in every sector apart from video games.

Nintendo DS – 538,900
Nintendo Wii – 252,200
Microsoft Xbox 360 – 202,900
Sony PSP – 122,800
Sony PS3 – 121,800
Sony PS2 – 108,000
All six games consoles currently on the market dropped in terms of unit sales in July in the United States. Overall, video games hardware and software sales came in at $848.9 million, a drop of 29 percent on last year. Year-to-date sales stand at $8.16 billion, 14 percent lower than at this stage in 2008. On a month-to-month basis, sales dropped 27.4 percent between June and July.
Nintendo
Nintendo continues its reign at the top of the sales charts, with the DS and Wii occupying the top two positions as they have done for many months. However, both consoles saw significant drops in sales, with the DS shedding over 200,000 units and the Wii over 100,000 units between June and July.
Microsoft
The Xbox 360 also dropped but by a lesser 40,000 units or so. Microsoft will take solace in the fact NPD noted the Xbox 360 was the only console showing a year-to-date sales increase at this stage, with a 17 percent growth figure. But 200,000 consoles sold in the company’s strongest territory is still not great.
Sony
Last as usual is Sony, with the company once again occupying the bottom 3 positions. Once again, all three Sony consoles sold very similar amounts, which seeing as the PSP is a handheld and the PS2 is a console well past its sell-by date isn’t good news for the PS3. The PSP leapfrogged the PS3 to take fourth place overall this month.

It’s funny how the PS5th crew will clown about Halo ODST which in my opinion could not be Halo 3.5 since Master Chief isn’t even in the game. It’s a whole new story taken out of the Halo Universe but I don’t expect PS2 shovelware lovers to understand what a good game is. I LOL at those who clown that there isn’t as many exclusive releases in 2009 for the 360 when games like gods of war and grand tursimo can’t even make it out of production. PS5th people basically scratched their ass for 2007 & 2008 waiting for an actually good game to come out. Though during that time the 360 was showered with games. But leave it upto Sony to release their games during the worst part of the recession. Maybe they knew people couldn’t afford these games over 2 years because they new the medical bill for their bleeding assholes needed to be paid first after the bumfucked you with a $800 release price. LOL I can only hope that your new IP’s are actually any good. Here is to hope for the PS3.

Yeah unfortunately GOW 3 and Heavy Rain want be out untill 2010. But we have Uncharted 2 coming and we have muti-plats like Assassins Creed 2 and Demon Souls among other things coming this year for holidays. But the Sony’s exclusives is whats going to blow other games out of the water and there taking there time about releasing them so I am sure they want them to be perfect? If were lucky they will release GT 5 around Christmas time? CON your talking shit about Mikes article why? He never said that the PS3 caught up with the Gay-Box on sales, he said that they were “closing the gap” And this article here is only about the U.S sales for the month. GT5 doesn’t need hype. If Sony announced it was releasing next week, there would be meltdowns.
The fact that even after showcasing GT PSP, people still only care where GT5 is shows something. I happen to think that Sony are going plant GT5 right next to MW2 to piss off Activision after Kotick’s comments.
If MW2 has a date to itself, and then GT5 muscles in out of nowhere right next to it…well, you’d need to lock the mountain.

Uncharted 2 looks to be awesome. So far Uncharted is the only game I have been missing but not enough to pay $450+ for (Metal Gear Solid on PS1 was the epitome of the series for me).

I can’t believe Mike hasn’t reported on this yet…
In any case, some people are willing to pay premium prices for a device with “glass touch sensitive buttons” a DRM optical format (reminds me of laser disc), and other bells and whistles. Talk to most of these people, and they will crow about what is coming in the near future (which actually has taken years to finally coalesce) and then say there’s is the “superior” product. Meh. I’ve had a blast with my 360 for the past (almost) 4 years, a year longer than I would if I had waited for the PS3. I’m glad I’ve waited this long, as I can’t see as I’ve missed much yet, and I’ll have saved $400+ in the process. I love paying half of what other people pay for the same product.

Roca, does saying I’m going to buy a PS3 while currently enjoying a PS2, PSP, DS, and 360 make me a fanboy? For what company or console? I just pointed out some of the features that make PS3 more expensive to manufacture presently (that a PS3 owner mentioned before already) and mentioned what the format reminded me of from past experience.
I’m going to love playing God of War 3 on PS3, it just won’t release for awhile, so I’ll wait for it, and I’ll consider buying a PS3 earlier (hello Uncharted 2) if the Slim comes out with a simultaneous price drop.

I actually heard Wii Sports Resort was pretty good as far as the swordfighting and archery goes, but I would still rent it instead of buying it. As for Wii Fit, they say EA Sports Active is much better. I would consider it even though I’m in pretty good shape and still able to run the younger Marines into the dirt.

US 360 install base : 15 M
US PS3 install base : 8 M
its a shame that the 360 manage to sell a couple of hundred thousands units more than the PS3 considering their install base is almost twice as the PS3 in the US. (it should be out selling it by 4 – 5 Millions)

I dont think is a shame….because there is two major factor on why Sony isnt winning this Gen
1) PS3 was launched a year later after M$ started this Current gen (most ppl did not wait)
2) PS3 launched at $600 US, and now after 3 years it is $400 US (same price as the 360 when it launched).
3) Most 3rd party PS3 Exclusive landed on the 360 because by the time the PS3 was out there were already 10 M 360 units out there.
You know those are very accurate facts and u are a leaving proof for those facts..

they launched the ps2 first, and thus, according to ps3 fanboys, should have come out first last gen. and here i thought it was because they had more games, more familiar franchises, huge stables of developers, rock solid partnerships with the big publishers, etc, etc, etc…. you know…everything the 360 has this gen….
