Gamescom 2009: Sony news roundup – PS3 $299 price drop, PSP comics and firmware 3.0
The long awaited Gamescom was held today in Germany and Sony dropped some megaton bombshells during its press conference. The long awaited PS3 ‘slim’ was revealed along with a massive price drop to $299 across the board. There was other exciting news as well such as new firmware coming soon.
The rumor of the PS3 Slim has been circulating around the Web for several months. Today Sony revealed that the new PS3 Slim is a reality and it’s just simply called the ‘PS3.’ However, I will refer to it as the PS3 Slim to avoid confusion.
The PS3 slim will launch Sept. 1 for the retail price of $299. This price drop will also apply to all PS3s on the market currently starting tomorrow. Gamers can literally go and pick up a PS3 from a store for the low $299 price tomorrow.
For those interested in the PS3 Slim, it has all of the same features the existing PS3 on the market does. However, there are a few changes to the design.
PS3 Slim Specs:
- Matte finish, shiny on the sides with new PS3 logo
- Has a new 120GB hard drive – which is still replaceable
- Two usb ports, tactile buttons
- Weighs 34 percent lighter and consumes 34 percent less power with new compact power cord
- $299 USD, €299 Euro, and ¥29,980 Yen (They sure love the number 299)
Digital Comic Books
The PS3 and PSP will be getting a new section for dynamic digital comic books. The PSP will get a new app called the digital reader which will play these dynamic comic books as well. Digital comic books will include popular series such as Spider-Man, X-Men and the Fantastic Four. This service will be available in the US and Europe.
Europe getting video download service
Our European brothers can’t complain now about having no video store as Sony has announced that the video download service will be coming out within this year over in Europe. Sony also reiterated music video services such as VidZone which will only be available on Europe.
Sony fights Apple App Store with PSN Minis
Sony revealed bite sized downloads for the PSP Go! called Minis. These games and applications will be sized under 100MB and will be on the cheap side. Minis include games like the popular DS game, Aqua Panic Oasis and the popular iPhone tower defense game Fieldrunners. Many publishers are said to be on board including EA. The current library is said to consist of 15 Minis titles in the works currently.

Sony also announced the new firmware 3.0 which adds features like dynamic animated themes and new XMB layout. There is a new section called What’s New, which shows the last several games you played for quick launch. The section also shows new content and has shortcuts to streaming TV sites such as iPlayer (European equivalent of Hulu). There is also a shortcut to watch Pulse streaming.

New games Locoroco: Midnight Carnival and new Eye of Judgment expansion was announced. Gamers in Europe who pre-order the PSP Go! between 1st and 10th of October can get a free copy of Gran Turismo PSP!
There is more news here than you can shake a stick at. However, don’t worry as we will be coming through the details in the near future. It seems like Europe is getting a ton of new features such as a video store, music video channel, iPlayer integration into the XMB and free Gran Turismo PSP when you purchase the PSP Go! My only question is, since Europe gets iPlayer integration with XMB, where is the Hulu integration for the US? Overall the amount of news that came out of the conference was great and the new price drop is definitely welcome.

Anyway, native iPlayer integration is literally one of the top features I wanted. It’s only the UK that gets iPlayer; European countries get their native TV stations.

Honestly CAD, if you are going down that road, we can say the same thing for the 360!!
How many people bought the arcade or core, then upgraded to the pro. The again, how many upgraded to the elite as well? This would artificially inflate sales numbers too.
If people are that concerned about sales figures, I would suggest to take them as they are (from reputable source, of course) because it happens on both sides. At the end of the day, it is still a console sold, regardless if it’s to the one person.

Yay for Sony for finally dropping the price. I’ve told a lot of people to wait for a little while and see if they drop the price. It’s been the only thing that’s stopped them from buy one.
I’m with you Spidey, I had linux on it for a week then got rid of it, was fun to play with but just took up valuable hdd space.
Though I do like the look of the firmware, however where is the cross game chat??

I thought I read ages ago about the 360 going fro 95nm to 65nm and then to 45nm. I guess that may be in the future.
I am sure a price drop is on the cards. From most evidence they look to be dropping the pro and reducing the price of the elite to the price of the pro. It would be nice if they still sold the red RE5 console, that sure looked tits.

Anyone read the dodgy translation for the new info. posted ont eh GT5 website?
Speculation is (some guy did the translation so who knwos how accurate), that ALL cars will have damage modelling, and some will have interior damage modelling. The physics system is all new and may even include the possibility of rolling your vehicle over…
However as IGN points out, its a dodgy japanese translation so who knows at this point

So the new slim doesn’t have the touch-sensitive buttons? And it looks made out of more plastic and doesn’t have the chrome strip to set it off? I like my big glossy machine better, and if I were going to buy a new one I would go tomorrow and get a big one for the new slim price before they sell out. I wonder if all the PS3 (160gb) will be discounted to the new slim price or if it’s just the 80gb? Oh well at least it has a lower price and 120gb is not bad. I think alot of people have been waiting for this price drop? So hopefully Sony ought to be able to move alot of units between now and christmas.

Amazon USA still shows the 160gb SKU @ $399 ($50 down on what it was & pretty much as I expected it to be).
It also looks like the cheaper slim is losing at least some functionality.
According to at least one poster here Linux was amazing and must be a big loss.

The 160gb is going to get a price cut, I just don’t know how much? It might drop to $299 and if it does then it will sell pretty damn fast I would imagine? But the 160gb comes in a bundle with Uncharted, so it probably won’t get the same cut as the others, beside the game that comes with it you also get 160gb which is 40gb more than the new slim is offering and the highest gb you can get unless you add more to it yourself. So I guess we will have to wait and see a few hours more untill we find out what the price cut is???

It’s nice that HH wants to nitpick and go after a console pack that includes games for the $299 price point, considering the price cut is for the consoles themselves, not the console/games packs.

I think it is firmware base Roca. So if you update then it will most likely remove that feature.
They probably removed it to make room for more Firmware features like the comic book reader and streaming movies. I for one never tried it so I don’t really care if they remove it.

I well remember when Greenberg said the PS3 was haemorrhaging, an article went up pretty quickly; when Activision were threatening Sony, an article went up pretty quickly; when Stringer refused to budge on the PS3′s price, an article went up pretty quickly.
If you can’t see the fact that Sony has got its act into gear this time with new hardware, new price, new firmware, new TV XMB integration, new Euro Vid Store, new content for the PSP, then frankly you’re being completely irrational.
We could always talk about all the great things that Microsoft showed at Colonge if you prefer?

First of all I never, never, write nonsense here. I write actual news and try to write stories not covered on majority of other sites. Writing interesting, fresh and good stories to attract readers is part of every journo’s job.
Secondly I am all for constructive criticism of the story as long as its not bordering on insulting.
As I indicated last night we spend a good deal to write the stories and use source for all stories. Usually near the end of the story I inject my opinion and if you disagree with that then thats fine to disagree without insulting.
I’ve written stories basically stating Sony’s marketing “sucks” also complained about missing day 1 features such as in-game chat, wrote a whole article criticizing Sony for removing in-Home game launching, just to name a few and for the most part no-one complains and most agree with me.
But the moment there is a story about high 360 failure rate or PS3 closing the gap betwen 360, all anarchy breaks loose.
Who cares if the PS3 catches up to the 360? Will it kill you? I want both systems to have equal number of sales in fact. Anyway I digress..
Just remember, other sites like Kotaku or NeoGaf will ban you like Dyack, creator of Too Human, without notice if you even talk smack about the site. Just something to think about.
All I ask is just play nice.

Minis is ok… I would like to know more about the digital Marvel Comics. I was a huge fan up until the mid-90s. I would be interested in giving this a try. I just hope they offer back issues and not the newer ones where all of the characters look like they are 10 years old.

The finish on the pics on IGN etc just looks horrible, kinda reminds me of the PS2 only maybe ‘more grainy’(my ps2 has been in the basement ages so I may be wrong). I think the buttons would be better served being black too.
