Can the PS3 Slim overcome the Xbox 360 and Wii?
A lot of overblown nonsense has been written about the PS3 Slim over the last few days. After all, this is just a new iteration of an existing console which is almost exactly the same as its nearest predecessor. However, I’ll concede that the mostly positive talk of the PS3 Slim has me wondering if it can actually achieve what Sony wants it to – kicking a hole in sales of the Wii and Xbox 360.
Before you ask, yes I do realize the irony of writing this article just a couple of days after criticizing the amount of hype heading in the direction of the PS3 Slim. But I feel this is a key question to ask because it is after all the one and only reason Sony is releasing the PS3 Slim in the first place: to sell more consoles, possibly knocking the Xbox 360 into last place in the current-gen console war.
I would, as most people have, that the Wii has won this generation’s console war. Nintendo is experiencing the inevitability of falling sales but the little white box has enough life left in it to hold on to its lead for the next couple of years. But things are a little closer when it comes to the PS3 and Xbox 360, both in terms of sales and the market they are looking to capture.
The PS3 Slim is guaranteed to generate sales for Sony in the first few months of being available. Early adopters may decide they need the new slimline model, and the new lower price may be enough to tempt people who have so far resisted the lure of the PS3 to climb on board. Then there are the Wii and Xbox 360 owners who have been enviously spying the list of PS3 exclusives on the way and decide they need a second console in their collection.
However, a September launch means the buzz may have all died down by the time Christmas rolls around and parents everywhere seek to keep little Johnny happy with the gift of his dreams. Then there is the question of how Microsoft is going to respond. An Xbox 360 Slim seems unlikely because this dietary policy midway through a console’s life seems to be a purely Sony marketing trick. But a big price drop at the start of the holiday season to completely take the wind out of the sails of the PS3 Slim? I wouldn’t bet against it.
What’s clear is that this battle really isn’t over yet. The Wii will hold on to the top spot but could be squeezed by Sony and Microsoft going to war beneath it. As for second place – the PS3 Slim increases the chances of Sony staging a comeback but those chances were very slim (excuse the pun) to begin with. So it’s a no for me. No.
Regardless of how much the price has come down it is still far to high for true mass-market adoption.
Particularly as there are alternatives offering much the same thing for a lot less cash.

Haven’t we already had this worked out?
PS3 sales, even if they doubled overnight would take until 2012 to catch the Xbox (assuming Xbox sales stayed constant and failed to grow any further).
PS3 is not going to catch nevermind pass Xbox.
This is all far too little far too late.
This time last year would have been much more like it.

Well, that and to cut manufacturing costs and losses as well.

It’s still possible, especially if both of it’s competitors do not lower their console prices as much of a percent. Another thing is that there does not seem to be as many highly anticipated titles as those that are said to come in the near future w/Sony.
Finally, if this gen does wind up lasting to 2016, Sony has plenty of time to make up ground and continue to drop prices. If Sony can play all of it’s cards right: price drops, advertising/marketing, perhaps another redesign, high quality exclusives, BC incorporated, more PS1/2/3/PSP/PSN titles available over PSN at very reasonable prices, PS2 discontinued, motion controls (full strength vice minimum w/eyetoy), maybe get Blockbuster on board to compete w/Netflix at a lower price, and a better movie/music/show library at a lower price, they stand a good chance of not only overcoming Microsoft’s lead, but also a possibility of approaching or even surpassing Nintendo’s seemingly impossible lead. Of course, any move they make at this point would be matched or outmatched by wise competitor’s, but if they do this or not is still up in the air.

Not necessarily, especially if they can keep demand high and market it properly. The slim model has already shot to the top of the charts, and with no appropriate response by the competition, it stands a good chance of staying up there.

I just saw on Amazon my PS3 Slim is due to be delivered on the 26th of this month, which means it will probably be shipped on the 25th… nice.

Probably because the fat PS3 is all out.
I think Sony is getting smarter now and they should do just fine for years to come. another Big factor of Sony is that their Motion Gaming is launching WAY before Natal hits the Market. so that’s also on Sony’s Favor.
Also all Sony 1st Party and 2nd Party studio are making games (new IP’s/ Sequels) left and right.
Guerrilla, Sony Bend, Insomniac, Sucker Punch, Media Molecule, Level-5 are ALL working on their second or third game for the PS3.
-Free PSN is also always going to be in Sony’s favor
I dont I think M$ is going down but I do see the Wii taking a bit hit in the future, they are most likely to finish 3rd in a 10 year console war. Those Wii owner will eventually upgrade to a PS3 or 360 in the Near future

You know as well as I that this business is always one of move and counter-move.
We just saw Sony move, we await the counter-moves from Ninty & Microsoft.
Both of whom, I suggest, will chop prices to ensure that even after this price cut the PS3 is by some margin the most expensive console on the market.
BTW did you see GameSpot’s estimates that the slim will cost Sony around $252.10 per unit?
Throw on packaging, transportation, and miscellaneous costs and it’s pretty clear each sale is still costing, not making, Sony any money.
That PS3 price-cut looks interesting right now, but only in a market that is waiting on things moving with the other 2 competitors.

The xbox has always been cheaper but yet struggled to increased 10M units lead they had. and Somehow that lead went down from 10M to 6.8M.

Well they are both on a more fair playing ground. Personally if Microsoft wanted to kill the noise they should make LIVE free and package the WiFi in with the Elite. Sony has the Bluray, free PSN, and WiFi advantage. But then again with the 360 you can get MSN Messenger, Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, PlayOn, Last.FM, Games on Demand, Movie/Tv Downloads, that satelite service for the UK and 1080P Movie streaming. You have to also consider the Parties on Live and the ability to watch with 7 friends Movies/TV/Photos that is very cool and the even more cool cross game chat.

No I think no matter what M$ counters with it want work. Hell everybody who wanted a X-box has already got one. People wanted a PS3 to begin with but X-box came out first and it was cheap. Now that sony dropped the price they will go back to there first choice and buy a PS3. Sony will sale alot of consoles around christmas and it’s only going to build from there. Just on the issue of parents buying consoles. I noticed the other week when I was in a few game shops that all the second hand games that had been traded in for the xbox were all at least half to a quarter of what the ps3 ones were.
I’m not too sure why this is or if anybody else has noticed this but it’s def going to appeal to parents

That’s a good point.
Even though sales traditionally pick up from now until X-mas the recession has bitten pretty hard.
My own expectation is that before (but well in time for) X-mas we’ll see Ninty & Microsoft move – we might even see a relatively small move now (say the shift dropping the 60gb Pro completely and the Elite taking its place) and a bigger price chop later.
Everyone knows that there will probably be a little ‘pent-up; PS3 demand here as those who were waiting for this now jump.
The real big deal willl be not how big a spike in sales that leads to but how sustained it is.

MS have said they’ve stolen PS2 users; Sony have said PS2 users are waiting for a cheaper PS3.

I would not be surprised if in 3mths time and if the peak is already seen to be past that rumours of the PS4 (ie ps3.5) start to begin in earnest.
I’d say this is pretty much ‘make or break’ for PS3, if this falls flat on its face (again) in a few months after a little spike in sales I can see a lot of troubleed times ahead for them.
In the long run I agree that is bad for us all but nobody but themselves got themselves into this mess.
Like I said, I think they’re a full year too late to the party with this.

I don’t really see how this is make it or break it for Sony I mean hell they are catching up to the X-Box sales and that was before the slim. During Sony’s GamesCom conference, they announced that they would be bringing the popular BBC iPlayer service to the PlayStation 3 officially, as well as a host of other channels. This was good news for UK users, but not that great for other European users. Sony have now announced several other services which will be coming in other European countries.
The BBC iPlayer channel should be releasing with firmware 3.00, this will be followed shortly after by RTVE, ANTENA 3 and La Sexta in Spain, ZDFmediathek in Germany, NOS in the Netherlands NOS, and the Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) in Australia. Previous 360 Sky TV should also be making its way to the PS3 in the upcoming months

Not sure where you got the price, but as far as I’ve seen, Wii has always been $249 since launch.
Regardless, I should be receiving my Slim on Wednesday. The only reasons I have waited this long is because I already had the 360, PS3 was too expensive for the few extra exclusives (which were constantly delayed) it offered (to me), not to mention it didn’t have trophies until this year and no full BC. Well, Sony got two out of 3 for me: trophies and price (and more exclusives out), but I decided I won’t wait for the full BC to come back as I already have the PS2 and they were talking about an update.

I don’t think your pricing is accurate.
Here in the UK these are the prices –
Wii is £179.
PS3 is now £249
Xbox Arcade is £134
Xbox 60gb is (interestingly) out of stock at Amazon
Xbox Elite is £219.
Besides, I think you’ll find that therreeason the Wii has sold so well is because the Wii has broken brand new territory in its sales.
Were it ‘just’ another pricey game console I doubt very much that it would have sold anything like as well as it has.
Unfortunately (for both Microsoft and Sony) they do not have very much appeal in this new market segment.
So yes, the PS3 & the Xbox are stuck with fighting it out and being seen as good value or too expensive because they are both seen as trad game consoles…..
……and unfortunately for Sony this does mean that as the most expensive game console $299 for a game console that plays video discs is too expensive to the mass-market who are not consumed with the minor details as the traditional gamers.
They will look at the prices of all 3 and work out that PS3 offers a lot that their kids (cos a hell of a lot of these are sold to parents for their young kids) just don’t need.
It’s pretty obvious now that to go beyond the trad console markey a game console has to have wide appeal and so far it is only Wii that has been able to generate this to any significant degree.
The sad truth is that neither Xbox nor PS3 have anything even close to the huge mass-market cashet and wide appeal of the Wii.
That’s how come the Wii has managed to be such a success despite all the ‘serious’ & ‘hardcore’ gamers whining about it’s supposedly low specs and comparitively high price.

Yes $249 in the states, it’s been $279 since launch in Canada. Sony however sells the PS3 for the same price in Canada and the US. So it’s a $20 difference between the Wii and PS3. Even if the Wii was $249 in Canada, it’s still worth the extra $50 for a PS3 by a longshot!

UK prices at least show what the differential is here (and it’s a differential that has been visible pretty much everywhee even iof the afdjusted amounts don’t quite tie up – although when the various state & sales taxes are added in it often turns out we’re not so different – and we get much better warranty & legal protection

The slim isn’t even out yet but I’d bet cash money that by the time it is we will see both Microsoft and Nintendo at least cover that move with a move of their own.
The net is rife with rumours that the Xbox Elite is about to go to $299 US.
Nintendo will be as aware as anyone about the new differential (and may even steal some of those adding to their ‘main’ console/gaming kit with attractive DSi moves).
Like I said before this business is all about move and counter-move, you can’t debate this stuff as if Sony will be able (or allowed by the other 2) to act in isolation.
The PS3 slim is yet to get its response.
That’s all.
When that comes (and personally I expect a 2 stage attack – a lesser move right now and a much bigger move as the X-mas season ramps up) we’ll see just how each will look to mummy and daddy.
If you really imagine that PS3 slim will now trade at the reduced price and the other 2 won’t move to counter that price you’re very much mistaken.
Sony have made their move, now we’ll just have to see what the other 2 do and where that leaves things.

I my friend from M$ took to their HQ and showed me some of the NEW ELITE boxes…he also told me M$ might not even drop the price of the Elite this year and if they do it will be $50 bucks less

Wow I said and it happened. Well at least part of it. So a tipster from a Canadian retailer sent in pictures of a Elite packaged with the wireless network adapter and Halo 3 to Joystiq. It has a release date of August 28. It Only makes sense to package the network adapter now that the PS3 is at the same price point of a 360. Also the price for the package is $349. I think I’m ready to buy my Elite now.

Hmmm, that’s funny Happy, I don’t recall saying Sony is the only one going to make a move! I was not implying that at all, just saying that $299 is the price now for PS3 and it’s a great value for the system. If the PS3 picks up alot of steam then obviously the competetion is going to try to counter that! Really, don’t put words in my mouth, I am not some blind fanboy!
In my opinion the PS3 is a better value at $299 then the Xbox Elite at $299. I’m sure Microsoft will cut the price of the Elite if PS3 Slim starts outselling it. I hope that happens, win for me! I would pick up an Elite at say $199 in a heartbeat!

The Network Adapter is not crap. It works just fine as a few of my buddies use it. Especially when we have game nights and do system link it works fine. The Laptop method works fine too. Get a good internet connection it will help. I have always said that hard wire is best and I will continue to use it even if it is packed in. I’m just saying they need to pack it in to step up their offerings. I may still wait for the Elite to go to $299. Roca I will always pick quality over crap therefore a PS3 will never make it to my house and infect my TV unless someone brings it over or it drops to $150 or better. I would hate to downgrade my online experience to a service with less features. Basically there is no point in going backwards. But I guess PS3 people like that since they love to complain about backwards compatibility not being in the PS3.

I don’t see the PS3 Slim taking over the Wii, not a chance. The Xbox 360 maybe, time will tell. It’s not impossible, but I don’t see that happening either. Looks like 3rd place for Sony, if they manage to grab second then good for them! Either way I don’t give a crap, can’t wait to see what the big 3 have up their sleeves for the next gen. Know I will be buying all 3!

You do need it (cos the experience is so much better with it) and the recipes we get on XBL are so much better.
Despite the fanboy chorus to the contrary XBL is widely regarded as the superior service (and very often by people that actually have both).
With Xbox we get more games (and more games with a higher meritocratic score).

Oh and about your Pics I’m calling bulshit because it does not make sense. Your Picture is foggy and therefore I cannot verify if what your saying is true. Second if you did not take the Picture then why is your name scribbled on a piece of paper like that. A proper pic is enough evidence which is clearly not there. Third the Live is free part makes no sense because you end it with the 4 meaning silver = Gold $50/Year. How does that equal free? What both of you are saying is telling me what “you think LIVE is” and not what LIVE really is. SInce the original XBOX it has been like this so you need to change the way you think because it does not go like that. LIVE has always been Free therefore there is Silver and Gold Accounts. Gold allows you to Play on line and Silver gets you everthing else. It’s just that simple. With Silver I can donwload content for games because it’s not all about online all the time. You can split screen or do system link one of the features the 360 does better and that is not talked about much. There is the Movies and TV and the chat works with SIlver too it’s just the online play that Gold gets you that you have to pay for.

I put 32 because most PS3 games support 32 player online (even Fat Princess), but some of them go far beyond the 360′s limit; the first online game for the PS3 Resistance: FoM (40), Resistance 2 (60), MAG (256)…even for online racing Forza 2 supports 8 player (4 players to a have decent race with no lag) while Motorstorm supports 12 and GT5P supports 16 with no lag. Killzone 2, Socom and Warhawk are 32 players for online…now Frontlines on the 360 supports 40 and that game is unplayable online (the amount of lag is rediculous). Paying $50 a year for “online game” or “to be able to play online” is a ripoff, you can have a better online expierience (#player/serverwise) on the PS3 for FREE….see manage to say it all in ONE paragraph, unlike you which appear to have a “7-line minimun” on every post
