Consumers buying PS3 ‘Slim’ over PS3 ‘Fat’

August 22, 2009

Consumers buying PS3 'Slim' over PS3 'Fat' After the announcement of the PS3 ‘Slim’ model there has been blanket media coverage of the unit across the Web. The device is definitely much more trimmed down, with nearly a 34 percent reduction in energy use and universal mass. The complete redesign of the system has many jumping on the PS3 Slim bandwagon and forgoing the PS3 Fat model.

I have to admit the new PS3 Slim design is growing on me, from the matte finish to the single chrome like piece located where the buttons are. The unit looks much more durable than the PS3 Fat, which had an almost translucent piano black cover.

I suppose I’m a techno junkie that just to have the latest and greatest thing. I started out with the launch Xbox 360 and after getting RRoD three times ended up with the top of the line Elite unit. Even though I still could have gotten it repaired after the third RRoD, something inside me was screaming to shell out the dough and get the Elite unit in its black matte glory. I have to say I’m starting to get the same urge with the PS3 Slim.

It seems like consumers are getting the same urge with the new redesign. I have colleagues who are starting to make up excuses to pick one up by indicating a new found need for a PS3 in the living room to free up the one in the entertainment center. According to Amazon (CA, US, EU, JP), the largest online retailer in the world shows that the PS3 Slim is sitting snuggly at number one for five days across the globe at the time of this writing. The PS3 Slim also sits within the top 10 in U.K. and Germany.

Its interesting to note that the PS3 Fat is still within the top 20 but slightly below the Slim. It is clear that gamers are opting for the PS3 Slim over the Fat unit. I suppose the fact the PS3 Slim has a 120GB hard drive versus the 80GB drive probably plays a big role as well.

However, I feel that many consumers may see the Slim as a new resurgence in Sony’s dedication towards gaming like from the PS2 era, as the new model seems much more geared towards video gaming. Consumers can find all models of the PS3 for the new low price of $299 (excluding bundles of course). How do our readers feel? Does the PS3 Slim make you want to buy it over the Fat model, and are you planning on buying it?

whats making me want to buy is the design and runs cooler with less energy cosumption…im debating whether or not to go with this or a refurb 60gb ps3…they both have their pros and cons

  2. lock_down:

You’ve got to hand it to Sony, because this isn’t just new hardware, this is them starting the PS3 all over again.

New PS3 logo, new PS3 game boxes, bringing back the old “”Play-Stay-Shun” V/O, no more coloured PS logo…it’s like everything about the old PS3 is now dead, obsolete, finished, over.

The new PS3 logo looks more friendly, a bit like the Wii logo…the spidey font looked too intimidating, as well as fucking stupid.

Now all Sony need to do is bring back the old PS1 boot up screen and they’ve got a winner.

  3. CarlB:

Yes, the Slim model is more attractive to me due to it’s added performance, efficiency, capability, and smaller form factor. Amazon has me scheduled to receive it this coming Wednesday as I have already preordered it. So why didn’t I get a PS3 earlier?

I already had a 360 that played the majority of multiplatforms just as good as if not even slightly better than the PS3. Some titles still reflect this today. The amount of exclusives that were availabe did not justify another $400-$600 purchase to me. Add to this that it wasn’t until this year they had trophies standard and it didn’t make sense to spend extra money and time on.

Now that a decent amount of quality PS3 exclusives have finally released and the price has come down to a reasonable level (for consoles, historically speaking), I see this as a no brainer as a gamer.

“Now all Sony need to do is bring back the old PS1 boot up screen and they’ve got a winner”

OHH MAN….that brings back so many good old memories.

  5. SW:

Oh tech. specs alone its the slim hands down. But I’m still a sucker for fatboy in the looks dept.

  6. Roca.:

I was debating in buy another 360 (since mine got the Fatal RRoD after the warranty period)

But I think I’m going to get the Slim for my Room and move the 60GB to the living room. because that wait I’ll be able to play some games online with my brother and friends, and also I will have a BD player in the living room (that’s where my expensive 7.1 surroundsound is).
The 360 has only one Exclusive that im excited about (Alan Wake) and I dont see my self paying for Live, it has always been a big issue for me.

  7. Kevo/Sir_Chubs_Alot08:

ADVERTISE the crap out of it sony

  8. Kevo/Sir_Chubs_Alot08:

i like how mike was sayin it wasn’t hype justified and now “it’s growing on him” classic mike…

  9. Ghost:

Off topic I know, but have you guys seen this site yet??? It tells you all the relase dates for games coming out. It has a calendar feature to. I don’t know kinda cool. The link is vgreleases.com

  10. Roca.:

The Joker Add-on the upcoming Batman: Arkum Asylum is up on the PSN for “FREE”

(M$ would have charged for this)

  11. Happyhockum:

    Wow.

    They did it once.

There’s actually been free stuff for Xbox too, you know
    (or rather, clearly you don’t).

  12. Barnabe Jones:

Mark Hamil = best Joker ever!

    Then Ledger, Nicholson, and Romero…

  13. Barnabe Jones:

“Does the PS3 Slim make you want to buy it over the Fat model, and are you planning on buying it?”

Well I do have a big ol’ phat 40 gig already. I put a 500 gig hard drive in, so I should be set. I think the only was I would end up buying a slim is if I had an issue with mine *knocks on wood* I do like the Slim, I just don’t really need it.

  14. Barnabe Jones:

Kevo – the site works pretty well when streaming through my PC. You just need divx web player. The buffering can be a little but of a drag, but it’s not too bad. How did the downloads on PS3 work out?

  15. Kevo/Sir_Chubs_Alot08:

    Barnabe
    they worked out fine
    pros:free,pic quality,low space consumption,easy to do:)
cons:slow downloads, cant watch while it’s in progress:(
but u should try it,it’s really convienent

  16. Ghost:

Why does movies off PSN take up so much space and DL movies off sites like SV take less???

  17. Kevo/Sir_Chubs_Alot08:

i have no idea ghost but i like

  18. Roca.:

Why does movies off PSN take up so much space and DL movies off sites like SV take less???”

I think every movies from the PSN comes with the PSP version in it. (that’s just my guess)

  19. Happyhockum:

    Ivan/Roca….

…. in face-palm ‘movies have varying file sizes’ shocker.

  20. Barnabe Jones:

Movies off of the PSN are also probably top quality. The best files from that site are a few steps below DVD quality.

  21. kev:

    wait a minute…

this guy’s entire article is based on what his “colleagues” have said what they’re going to do?

    priceless..lol….

  22. JofaMang:

Invisible ass pounder has passed, you can let your children/pets/farm animals back out now.

  23. SW:

    Well, his colleagues are consumers.

I suppose he could change the article title to ‘Consumers that I know will be buying….’

But then it wouldn’t be blorge ;)

  24. Ghost:

    HH:
No shit really they have diff sizes damn your smart. But I think the question was WHY?

  25. JofaMang:

Video compression varies from type to type, provider to provider. Higher compression (and lower quality) result in smaller file sizes, which can save streaming service providers bandwidth (thus money).

Uncompressed video is like film: each pixel of each frame is represented in the data. When video is compressed, the changes to what you see on the screen is what is charted and recorded. Uncompressed video will have the data for each frame, so 10seconds of black screen will require the same data as 10 seconds of action and movement. When it is compressed, those 10seconds will be broken down into a description of only what changes, resulting in much smaller amount of data.

To expand a little bit, uncompressed video of a person standing still and talking will be the same size as if that person is jumping and running on top of moving train. With compressed video, the movement of the lips is charted, and the rest remains static. There is very little static pixels in an action scene, so a compressed version of the action scene will have more data than a compressed version of the talking head at the same length of time.

  26. Barnabe Jones:

    ^^ Great answer.

  27. Happyhockum:

    Ghost

If you really need to ask such a basic question then I’d start reading up on the topic.

Image & audio bit-rates, codecs & compression would be a great place to start.

  28. Happyhockum:

    JofaMang

It’s also worth pointing out that whilst differing compressions codecs are used all film is still enormously compressed, even Blu-ray even if it is less so compared to other forms of video like regular DVD.

  29. Roca.:

why does every to you have to be Bluray vs DVD???

  30. JofaMang:

    @HH

You are confusing compression with conversion. Real film has an immeasurable resolution, as it is literally defined by the molecule count in the cells.

They convert real film into digital formats, based on the format’s resolution. DVD = 640×480. BD =1920×1080. DVD and BD both show every one of those pixels in each frame as they play. Compression is the removal of the need to refresh every single pixel in every frame. Conversion the interpretation of the original film into a set resolution.

  31. Spideydog:

    “^^ Great answer.”

    Agreed.

  32. Happyhockum:

    JofaMang

    No, actually you’re wrong, I haven’t “confused” a thing.

They do indeed convert film into a digital format but this usually has absolutely nothing to do with the final retail video format the film will end up on.

You need to look into 2K, 4K & 8K digital conversion (the common resolutions used and all far beyond Blu-ray nevermind DVD).

In fact these can sometimes be mastered back onto film (remastering or film restoration).

    Better luck next time.

    Spideydog

    LMAO
    Pathetic.
It was a cr@p answer, wrong and inaccurate.
Jebus but you have it bad saddo.

  33. Happyhockum:

    Ivan/Roca

    What’s up?
Does it spoil the PR BS & that ridiculous illusion of high-tech amazing-ness when someone starts pointing out the truth of the matter?

  34. Happyhockum:

……cos Sony never make a big deal about it either, huh?

    Hilarious.

  35. Roca.:

JofaMang’s answer makes more sence.. and it also accurately answered Ghost’s question:

“Why does movies off PSN take up so much space and DL movies off sites like SV take less???”

you on the other hand went off topic and started trolling about BD vs DVD and never answer/address Ghost’s question

  36. Happyhockum:

    Ivan/Roca

Of course it does – to you.

You’re not interested in the facts, you’re just cheering ‘your side’ on.

    Pathetic.
    As usual.

  37. Happyhockum:

Like you understand a word of any of it anyways.

  38. JofaMang:

I wasn’t cheering any side on, I was correcting your ignorance. Sidetrack all you want, your FUD tactics are juvenile and transparent.

  39. Happyhockum:

    Ha ha ha ha

Oh look, ‘JofaMang’ replies to a comment made to Ivan/Roca.
Yeah, everyone stand back amazed and surprised, not.
The lunatic mentalist just showed a little more of his lunacy.

Exactly how sad and f*cked up do you have to be to run multiple accounts agreeing with yourself saddo?

Is that the best you can mange as a reply?

The fact is that you gave an answer totally at odds with reality.
The chorus of approval from the rest of the schiozo-f*ckwit clan only goes to illustrate the level of ignorance on this subject around here.

You can just blindly do your ‘I’m right’ routine to your idiot-crew if you wish.

It’s clearly a case of ‘pearls before swine’ anyways.

  40. JofaMang:

I made a mistake in reading your post, since we were in the middle of a conversation, scanning through your usual bullshit I assumed it was directed at me. Since I was late to this party, I thought you were ONCE AGAIN claiming a gang mentality directed at me for my posts.

All it was, was a case of me not reading your entire post clearly… something that is easy to do considering the amount of bullshit you spread over these threads.

  41. JofaMang:

Besides, I consider myself a fairly educated and intelligient guy (I am also very modest ;D) It is insulting to be accused of being Ivan. I couldn’t be that stupid if I tried. I don’t honestly think Ivan/Roca are the same person (just a gut feeling) but even if they were, can you honestly compare the way we write and post, and how we interact?

Fuck, I rip on Ivan as much as the rest of you xbots. I was all over Fallen_Angel, I confronted his ignorance over pretty much anything technical he claims to know about, and I don’t prop or even really acknowledge Ivan’s Propaganda filled posts.

Wouldn’t this seem like an EXTREMELY difficult way to get cred on a message board, when my words can obviously stand up for themselves without creating multiple accounts to rip on?

Shit, my best stuff is responding to the vile ignorant dribble you put out… I have had all the material I need in just reading your posts.

  42. Ivan_PSP:

Yeah that’s why we play PS3 together.

jofaMang just just accept my PSN invite and and send D-Roca a invite if you want so we can all play together and prove this BS. Xbots use that cuzz they have nothing else especially not games.

    I own a Xbox but i don’t consider myself a Microsoft bot.

  43. Happyhockum:

    JopfaMang

Seriously, maybe you’d be amazed at what I’ve seen go on on some boards.

    Take it easy.

  44. JofaMang:

    “Take it easy.”

    eat me, douche

  45. Spideydog:

    “Spideydog

Ahhhh, no your wrong HH, AGAIN ….. bit of a habit for you isn’t it.

Egg is a permanent feature for your face eh!!

  46. Happyhockum:

    Predictable as always.

  47. Happyhockum:

Here you go Spideydog, here’s your chance to show some balance.

Let’s see how energetic and vociferous you get over actual threats of violence.

  49. Ghost:

HH: I NEED HELP GUYS 911 Help Me please!!!!!!
Ghost is being mean to me, because all I do is talk shit. He told me he was going to kick my ass.LMFAO

  50. Happyhockum:

Spam the board with your creepy attempt to pass this off as less than it was if you like but everyone can see what you did.

I’m not asking for help at all.
I’m making sure that when action is taken (and the rules are pretty clear on this kind of thing) everyone will know why.
    That’s all.

People rip at each other all the time here but until now nobody was deranged enough to start threatening physical assault on anyone.

You made that bed, lie in it.

  51. Arvis:

Actually, Happy, before you were around, there were often thugs who would only post a couple times that threatened physical violence quite a lot. I think those folks started getting IP-banned, though.

    Anyways, you ok? You’re being weird… :|

    -Arvis

  52. Happyhockum:

    Perfectly ok Arvis.

I don’t see why anyone should put up with that cr@p.
It’s usually rule numero uno in every site I’ve ever been to.

Why on earth I am being seen as odd for seeing it that way is beyond me.

JofaMang is still wailing about my seeing him as possibly another poster’s sockie, is he weird & over-reacting for a mere identity issue?

  53. Roca.:

are you afraid of Ghost(s)??? lol

  54. JofaMang:

Man up HH, and I will drop it, I promise.

  55. Arvis:

    Happy,

I’d be upset if you accused me of being Ivan… >.>

    -Arvis

  56. Ivan_PSP:

    Arvis:
    LoL, yeah okay funny.

People need to just STFU already about this crap. And stop fighting like little whining kids wow is just too pathetic, no one cares about this anymore get over it. Don’t idiots get to you i sure don’t i have self control.

  57. Spideydog:

Threatening physical violence is never ok. Speaking gutter talk is one thing, but threatening violence is another all together and Ghost’s comment should not be condoned in any way.

I do agree with HH’s standpoint in this, even though I do not agree with his way of “debating” with people.

Ivan, I am away from home for 6 months, so I won’t see any invites.

Perhaps we need to bury the hatchet and start a fresh with EVERYONE so we actually debate in an open minded fashion about the articles/systems/games. That means not posting hate comments about EITHER system.

Debate on merits, not just because you hate the other system/manufacturer.

    ????????????????

  58. Happyhockum:

    Kudos

That’ll so for me Spideydog. Respect.

  59. Happyhockum:

    Ooops

    so = do

  60. Spideydog:

    (Shakes hands)

    Done :)
