Sony positions the PS3 Slim for domination holiday 2009
For the most part, news outlets and journalists have had a positive reaction to Sony’s price cut and new PS3 model announcement. Honestly, how can anyone really complain when Sony did exactly what everyone was asking them to do? However, of course there are a few critics that will complain no matter what Sony does.
In the latest episode of Invisible Walls on Gametrailers, the crew of the show indicated that Sony has the best lineup this year and with the PS3 price cut and introduction of the Slim, the company has effectively lined itself up for a great holiday quarter. I agree with Shane Satterfield, VP of Spike Content and Editor in Chief of Gametrailers along with his cohort, Marcus Beers on their assessment of Sony’s current position this year as far as price and game lineup.
However, I have seen an article or two on the Web indicating that the PS3 Slim won’t save Sony or something to that effect. First of all no one in their right mind would think Sony needs saving currently. Yes, revenue was down but so was Samsung’s. Currently, Samsung is the largest consumer electronics manufacturer and Sony is the second largest. I would say that banks and U.S. auto manufacturers need saving more than anything else. Once a company gets into a situation where you need bailout money then that’s when you state “X-company needs saving.”
Lets see what some of the titans of the industry are saying about the PS3 Slim and the price cut.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot indicated that Sony’s move was the right thing to do in order to expand especially faster into the European market.
“It’s exceptional news, actually,” Guillemot said. “I think the machine is a great machine, with the Blu-ray… we’re a good supporter of Sony, we believe in the platform. We’ve got a lot of PSP games coming, and frankly we also support the PlayStation Network with direct-to-consumer releases…So we’re strong, committed partners of Sony and I’m extremely excited about the Slim – I think it looks great. And the price point will be hot.”
EA CEO John Riccitiello indicated that Sony’s decision to cut the price of the PS3 is also the right move and done at the best time.
After interviewing Riccitiello, Associated Press wrote:
…Sony’s decision to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 is a “bold move done precisely at the right time.” Riccitiello says the price cut was a “great move,” and he praised Sony for not leaving it to right before Christmas or Thanksgiving. Consumers will likely be bombarded during the holiday season with an onslaught of messages from companies selling everything from DVDs to TVs to cell phones, he says. Doing the price cut in the middle of August instead “really stands out.”
I have to agree with the CEO’s – the price cut and introduction of the new model couldn’t have been done at a better time. Considering that the PS3 was EA’s top bread winner for two quarters and Ubisoft’s top revenue generator for 2008, its not surprising to see these executives being bullish about the PS3’s prospects.
The success of the PS3 this holiday season really rests on the shoulders of the Playstation marketing team. The marketing department has let me down in the past with lackluster and weak ad campaigns for the PS3. I have often used them as the whipping boy in some of my articles. However, before anyone makes any kind of judgment about the PS3 Slim, let’s hold our reservations and give it a fair chance this holiday season.

Ummm, not really rocket science! Yes this was a great move for Sony, likely the best one yet for the PS3. Might be too little too late though! Sony needs to get the killer games pumping non stop at this point in the stage, alot of slack to catch up on. I’m just happy that more people can get a PS3 and enjoy the games. Love the competetion, means more great games for me!

I think this was a brilliant phenomenal job on Sony’s part cutting the price before the holiday rush starter. We already have a sure holiday winner in sales already PS3. And of course those executives are more happy with PlayStation 3 now that they going to get more customers to buy their games. And no one in their right mind would buy a Wii or Xbox 360 over the PlayStation 3. Also no just because Sony is not number #1 like they always been before doesn’t mean they need saving. Those people that write that obviously want Sony to fail, Microsoft’s fan boys America.

Yes they could do that but they will fuck themselves more. Unlike Sony. Microsoft can’t produce quality Xbox 360 hardware or any good software for that matter. Lowering the price won’t help them as much any more. Xbox 360 Arcade was $199.99 and it hardly took over the Wii or PlayStation 3 sales. Sony actually would be profiting more unlike Microsoft they paying still paying for the Red Light of Death, E74, DVD Scratching and warranty.
Microsoft needs to invest in full games instead of timed exclusives and DLC. They need a better Xbox 360 with some quality plus a lot more exclusives like Sony has. Sony has a massive gaming empire also they own more gaming studios then Microsoft and Nintendo combine.

The Xbox 360 was selling and still is at $199.99 and 299.99 and PlayStation 3 was selling at $399.99 and $499.99 and remember the Xbox 360 was released in 2005 and the PS3 2006 a year later. And Microsoft only manage to sell 31.41 Million consoles according to VGCHARTZ and the PlayStation 23.24 Million and the half of 2008 Sony was outselling the Xbox 360 until Microsoft cut their prices. Microsoft only manage to sell 8.17 Million more consoles then Sony. But with the new PlayStation 3 price cut Sony will catch fast. Sony has the software and hardware plus awesome quality a basically a free built-in Blu-ray player there’s just no reason for anyone to think Microsoft can stay #2 and Sony #3. PlayStation will be doing great in everything starting now.

Thats, in a buisiness all about move and counter-move, seems to me to be ridiculous.
The PS3s lim price-point only looks attractive right now becauset he other 2 have yet to move.
When they do PS3 will again be back as the most expensive console, wiping out that ‘good position’.
Don’t be surprised too if Microsoft especially move twice.
The first will be the coming Elite at the old Pro price-point.
The second will be after watching the dust settle a little but in time for X-mas
The central fact in all of this is that PS3 would have to sell vast numbers to catch Xbox.

As far as I see it, Sony has done everything right. They cut the price, introduced a new model, and have a really strong holiday line up. What else can they do at this point? Also the fact that some of the PS3’s biggest titles are coming out soon, (GT5 & GOW3) ensures that the momentum should stay strong well into 2010.

It’s called “free super saver shipping”. And Happy’s right, I think it applies to anything over $25.
The only problem with it is, that they do not ship right away. So the lead time can be up to 10 days or so.

We can already see some of the activity (from Amazon charts etc) so there’s no clairvoyance needed there at all.
We also know the pi$$-poor state of Sony’s PS3 sales numbers beforehand.
So we know they are going to be comparing this to an already very low starting point/base.
It doesn’t take any sort of super-powers to see how this will be spun.
But you watch, in 3 – 6mths spin is exactly what it’ll be shown up as.
Is your PS3-ery is so powerful that you seriously expect the required doubling of PS3 sales to be sustained so that PS3 will take 2nd spot from the Xbox by 2012?!
In fact PS3 sales dropped below the point they were when that estimate was made so they would have to more than double.
No super-powers necessary to see that is never going to happen – even if there wasn’t a global recession on (and even if that recession may be moderating right now – watch out for it dpuble-dipping tho!).

I have repeatedly said that I don’t care if the PS3 takes 2nd from the 360… I care that more of my friends are going to own PS3s now, and a very long time ago we passed the dreamcast-scenario, so discontinuation is not a concern.
My self-worth isn’t effected in any way shape or form by the sales numbers of my chosen console. I pity you that yours obviously is, but at least you picked the second best console for propping up your flacid e-member.

The New Xbox 360 Elite is just a black Pro with a 120gb. No HDMI nor component cable, it is just a 360 pro with a new hardrive. I would say, an upgraded arcade. It is just a black case. If you want a good console system, get one with built in wi fi, bluetooth, blu ray drive, and a 2.5 hard drive that can be upgraded.

Now i have a few points to make as i own both a ps3 and a 360.
1st All the ps3 fan boys on here have spent the last 2 years saying just wait for sony this and sony that (GOW 3 KZ2 MGS4 etc) HH says after a mere week im sure MS will counter move he gets

2nd I like the Slim i liked from the start it matches my elite im considering getting rid of my fat and getting one. However its still a PS3 and after the inital high sales will slow down.
3rd. This gen still has allot of life in it and i think the defining moment will be natal vs the ps3 motion eye thing. And it looks like MS has the better technology here, but sony could steal it if MS fail to produce the games and sony can.

Natal with a natural depth sensing capability due to stereoscopic vision would have a hard time being inferior to software based displacement algorithms. If these technologies are supposed to meet identical goals, the 360 definitely has an edge in that regard.

Still, I have no idea how the thing will sell but I have a REALLY hard time accepting the notion that there will be some kind of shift by wii owners over to the 360/PS3. Its all image, MS/Sony have the ‘gamer’ image, the Wii doesn’t. And of course big N will do what it always does. They’ll take Wii sports(& resort) and whatever else they have, throw them in a blender, and the end product will feel very much like the previous games, only its a ‘REVOLUTION!’ in gaming and will sell a gazillion copies.

Rather than giving a score, PS3 owners are awarded trophies. The easy to understand system offers a easier way to compete amongst fellow gamers. Rather than Sony holding back updates to make each one appear to be more massive, we get firmware updates often, allowing us to have the most functional console possible.
11.) More Depth to Portable Titles
iPhone has made waves with its massive game library, but none of the titles compare to the depth that God of War: Chains of Olympus offers. There are many other PSP titles that fit the bill also.
12.) Re-invigorated PSP Support
Now that Sony has planned a Digital-Download only model, more developers are on board than ever. Couple that with the new PSP Minis initiative, and the PSP’s library is set to increase by over 70 titles before the year’s end.
13.) Design
Let’s face it, the PS3 and the PSP are two very sexy machines. When people see these two systems, they can instantly see the cutting edge look that offers a preview to the cutting edge tech that is inside.
14.) Lag-Free Online
Sure there are always exceptions to this rule, but for the most part, the PSN has been a lag-free service since day 1. With little-to-no downtime, the service provides gamers with endless hours of online fun.

I have used Powerline networking in several apartments, from older “character” buildings, to a brand spanking new condo (that I live in now) as i didn’t bother to sell the kit, and keep it as a back up. I have had friends and family try it. The non gamers loved it for the simplicity. The gamers have had the same problems as me: high latency and inconsistent packet loss. Compared to using a router and network cable, IT IS CRAP. I have had personal experience with both basic and high end kits. The best they get is far below the integrity of midrange wireless. It is not for gamers, not matter how blue in the face you get convincing yourself otherwise.
It is a good thing i never considered you credible, or I might have to be a drama queen and accuse you of ruining it.

Also, to address to Powerline network issue, I do have to admit that I had forgotten that there is a known quality issue between the standardized power delivery and household codes across different countries/regions. I ran powerline/homeplug between two seperate buildings and it was ‘ok’ (was able to get about 300K/s). I can’t remember if there was packet loss as all I did was run speedtest.net and then returned them to the store
I’m in NA to and my house is only 4 years old.
I personally wouldn’t use them for a ‘home network’ anymore, but I could see me using them in a console or mebbe a slingbox or something.
Oh and some of us need to take off our tinfoil hats…

Those were both removed over a year ago with the release of the 80gb/160gb skus. You are either clueless or a troll. One way or the other, it is sad.

actually, it looks like the ps3 slim removed backwards compatibility..

i just think it’s bad that sony laughed at ms for having more than one sku while the ps3 has had waaay more than the 360 while removing features from every new rollout…
