Will Xbox 360 owners buy a PS3 Slim this holiday season?
With the recent announcement by Sony of the new PS3 Slim for the low price of $299, many consumers have started pre-ordering the device. The new PS3 Slim has been sitting at the number one spot on Amazon for ten days straight despite the fact it hasn’t even been released yet. Could many of those buyers be existing Xbox 360 owners?
This is an interesting topic that has been on my mind all week ever since a few of my Xbox 360 only colleagues have pre-ordered the PS3 Slim recently. Their reasoning all consist of the low $299 price, new “attractive” Slim model, PS3 exclusive games, Blu-ray and the desire for the next gadget. Since I am a gadget tech-freak myself, I have bought all of the consoles upon launch of each system, so I can understand the urge to buy new tech-toys.
I spent countless hours playing on the 360 thinking it was the best system out in 2005. With games like Gears of War, Bioshock and Oblivion back in 2006 and 2007 before the PS3 even hit the store shelves, it truly was a powerhouse for blockbuster next gen games. Many hardcore anti-console PC, and PS2 gamers bought the Xbox 360 drooling over Gears of War.
This really goes back to the fundamental basics, that true gamers love games regardless of what system or company. However, nearly four years after the launch of the Xbox 360 there is a swing of the pendulum towards the PS3. Not from a sales perspective but from a games perspective.
For over two years, Sony has been telling angry fans to “just wait and see” when confronted as to why the company would not pay for exclusives like Microsoft. I am not sure if the sad departure of Peter Moore was the catalyst, but ever since then Microsoft has not been able to secure a blockbuster exclusive game to date.
It seems stubborn fanboism may be blinding at first, but the gradual steady release of AAA games from Sony may have started to melt the cold hearts of hardcore Xbox 360 fanboys who are now drooling over games like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. How can someone that loves games hate a great game?
Also, the fact that the PS3 has no subscription for online gameplay makes the console a bit more attractive to existing 360 owners. Xbox Live is great and in some ways worth paying the $50 per year. However, if existing subscribers to XBL had to shell out another $50 on top for PSN, then 360 owners would probably not buy the PS3 as they would have to pay $100 per year in total online subscription costs.
Ultimately, with games like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, free PSN and the PS3 Slim for only $299 altogether makes it difficult to ignore the console this year for Xbox 360 owners and those sitting on the fence. With the Xbox 360 userbase already saturated with hardcore gamers, many will definitely start looking at the PS3 this holiday while Microsoft starts looking towards the casual market.

We know one day the PS3 is getting Mass Effect and Gears of War. That might happen maybe next year, for at least one of those title. And oh please not everyone adores Gran Turismo 5 as much. I love it but still. I just need UNCHARTED 2: Among Thives and one day Resistance 3 Killzone 3 also a remake of SOCOM 1 & 2 would be awesome.

Why would any 360 owner want a ps5th? There is no difference in the graphical performance of these two consoles. The ps5th offers nothing (other than the odd exclusive game) that the 360 doesn’t have.
Oh wait I know why. All those points that Ivan raised above are so valid. I mean its not like we have never heard them before (only on every article he posts on) but maybe its starting to sink in for us all. Like I know its been mentioned before but I am just starting to realize that you get a blu ray disc(player?), and you can play Killjoyzone 2, and that sony will own Xmas this year (don’t Coke own it) and the hard disk is upgradeable(if you want to dismantle you ps5th) and that sony have the bestest most awesome exclusives like errm… Killjoyzone 2!

Hey Mike, are you still in the states (sincere question, not trying to be a smartass)? It’s been released and available for purchase at retail since the 25th, and I received mine from Amazon on the 26th… and have been playing Uncharted since.

To answer your question, for me at least, it was the existing and future exclusives, plus a blu-ray player at the new reduced price point and improved form factor/efficiency… I’m big about what is out now, not what “may” be, so this includes: Uncharted, KZ2, MGS4, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance 1&2, Valkyria Chronicles, Infamous, and maybe even Warhawk and Motorstorm. Beyond these ten games, I’m really looking forward to Uncharted 2, and hopefully God of War III will finally come out in March of next year.

The PS3 slim is scheduled to be released on September 1, 2009 in North America and Europe and on September 3, 2009 in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Amazon.com, Best Buy, and GameStop have started to sell the PS3 slim on August 25, 2009.

Roca – To get the ps5th exclusives! Like….?
Take into account the fact that I am not a big fan of FPS, we are left with GT5. Not worth £250 in my eyes.
On another tangent, is it my imagination or are the majority of games all the same these days. I have stopped betting games magazines because every month it seemed like the same bland unidentifiable games were getting reviewed. I realize that as time goes on its unlikely that we will see anything new or inventive. It does still happen but its a once a month (at best) as opposed to several a month (like FPS and RPG).
To be honest I am sick to death of the same thing being churned out, but that is my problem and I have to accept it but it means I am going to buy less and less games. I am not going to buy a game that blurs into a lot of other games I already own. Don’t take that at being a dig at sequels. Some games demand a sequel (RE4 springs to mind) but when developers knock out the same game without making it stand out does get on my t*ts.
But who can blame the developers and publishers when people like Ivan will but all this fodder. To say something like “I wouldn’t bother buying a flying racing games” when he will buy loads of other games that are differentiated only by name is a bit rich. How many flying racing games get released every month?
Sorry but I am on a rant and its nothing to do with ps5th or 360 or Wii. Just the games industry in general. And that brings me to the point of paying £250 for the ps5th when I most likely have all the games already on other systems. I know I am leaving myself open for counter argument here with films and music being other media that lack creativity, so maybe its just am fussy these days. At least the Wii has Ready, Steady Cook! The Game. How many cooking games are released each month!
So in summary Roca…. Oh to be honest I forget what the hell brought me on to this. But the point I am trying to make is….well I am not sure. Answers on a postcard please.

Anyone who owns a 360 already is unlikely in my opinion to buy PS3.
Why?
Because the big draw claimed for the PS3 – Blu-ray – is available much cheaper, quieter, less bulky (even accepting the slim’s reduced girth) and more user-friendly (have you read the various steps you have to go through to get it to do things like bitstream audio properly?) as a stand-alone.
The rest is a handful of exclusive games for almost double the price of a decent stand-alone Blu-ray player.
A handful.
Ivan might find himself soiling his panties at the thought of that but few of the rest of us will.
The plain fact is Xbox already offers me more excellent games that I will buy.
I really don’#t need another console – especially one that is (according to most of those who have both) collecting dust a lot of the time (aside from its blu-ray movie playback use).

If the ps3 “exclusives” are so great and worthy of spending $400 to play, why aren’t they selling more? They are supposed to be a selling point, according to the resident ps3 fanboys, yet hardly any ps3 gamers have bought these supposed “blockbuster exclusives”.
Supposedly, these are THE reason to own a ps3. If very few are buying, that means very few are playing. If very few are playing, that means very few are online playing. I go where the games and gamers are; the 360 and xbox live.
It sells more games per console and has more gamers than the ps3 while have a larger library of games than the ps3.
This is why it always makes me laugh when Ivan or Roca claim the ps3 is the “ultimate gaming machine”…lmao…
It’s because of this, I see no reason to take a step backwards by buying a ps3.
Standalone bluray players are very low in price and will only drop for the holidays. Besides, any true videophile doesn’t use a gaming console for their movie watching.
I can buy a much nicer standalone bluray player, HALO:ODST, COD, and Forza Motorsports 3 and several bluray movies for the cost of one new ps3. no thanks.

The point was it can be done (and for a mass-market often unable to see much in it between upscaled DVD & Blu-ray the quality differences are pretty negligible……the audio is the same as PS3 before the slim, that couldn’t bitstream properly either).
Besides that’s bottom of the heap.
Go up to $150 and you’re seeing name brands.
Go to $200 and you’ve got the (actually very very nice) Panasonics like the BMP BD 60 @ $194 US.

Whatever is going on in the USA with pricing it is not the same here in Europe.
In the UK the PS3 remains more expensive.
£50 more = $81 US/$97 AUS.
In the € zone of the EU the differential is €50 = £44/$71 US/$85 AUS.

Indeed, if one owns a 360, a BD player would be a cheaper alternative to having a current gen system. We can discount the PS3 exclusives, since we always discount the Xbox exclusives.
But, another way to look at it, is if an equal BD player were to cost about $150 (give or take) and is a necessity, then the PS3 would be a $150 console. If one is going to pay the price for a player of that quality anyway, then it must be discounted from the price of the PS3. For that crowd, that already owns an Xbox, it is not that big of a deal, and in exchange you get to enjoy some PS3 exclusives.
Economic philosophy is easily manipulated to suit the needs of the philosopher.
It is a $300 console, no matter which way tou look at it. Regardless how many times you slice up the mosaic that makes up the consumer populace, the demographic examples can be plucked to suit any argument. It works well for on the spot debate, but in general, it is still a $300 dollar console competing against another $300 console, with a huge market to sell to.
Specific situations are just that, specific.

He could be paying at least 1/3rd less, more if he’s not fussed on brand-names and the best quality.

I hope its a twisted metal announcement too. TM2 and black still to this day are two of my favorite PS brand games.
I only hope they make it as difficult as Black. That game was unforgiving and challenging.

Mine came with the network adapter ( I have a launch ps2/still works).
I had the TM black before the online portion came out, so I don’t recall if twisted metal online had the full game in it or not.

So far we haven’t had any word from Eat Sleep Play as to what they are “officially” working on.
David Jaffe was interviewed and made mention that an announcement wouldn’t happen at E3 last year. Any other game shows happening in the US between now and E3?
As far as I’m concerned the Twisted Metal games are one of the defining series for the PS, and I bought a ps3 with the expectations of seeing another iteration.

it’s over “150 million” (not 120) PS2 owner out there who are “also ignoring” the 360 and the Wii because if you combine the PS3/Wii/360 numbers together they won’t be near (not even close) the PS2’s. So I guess Sony is not the only one taking a hit from them PS2 user

It will be interesting to see if the $299 Ps3 will steal a bulk of those sales. We just need to compare to last year.

Some gaming types may be all over PS3 slim right now
(and a lot are buying replacements and/or 2nd machines jugng by a lot of the comments I’ve seen)
but whether the mums & dads will care come X-mas time is quite another matter.
My bet is the 250gb Elite priced at the same point as a PS3 slim (as it is in Europe) with Forza & 2nd controller is going to spoil the Sony party big stylee.

If that is indeed what it will be priced at, that is a good deal. I’m not sure how much spoiling of the slims sales will occur, as when kids want something at christmas the parents may not be looking at the extras.
Sony tried that in lieu of a price drop and it didn’t really work too well then.

God of War 1 & 2 720p/60fps
God of War Collection is a special port of God of War and God of War II for the PlayStation 3, and is set to be released by the end of 2009. The two games have been adapted by Bluepoint Games to use the features of the PlayStation 3 including higher resolution (720p) and support for PlayStation Trophies. The title was developed based on feedback from players of the series in anticipation of God of War III’s release, and seen as a way to introduce new players to the series prior to that game’s release.

Well, a little while back I was saying how I was pleased to see the PS3 slim bitstream audio properly (and that is a welcome step forward).
However.
I am disappointed to learn that it is limited to 5.1 audio.
That’s annoying as several titles are now being released in 7.1 – and HD audio transparent to the master audio track is supposed to be one of the big deals about Blu-ray.
Damned shame they droped the ball here.
This means that whatever qualities the slim has a Blu-ray standalone is the only way to get the audio as it was intended.
