Review: Shadow Complex verdict without the anti-gay boycott nonsense
The game Shadow Complex was recently released to much acclaim on Xbox Live. The game received some attention from the media for both good and bad reasons. The controversy around the game stems from the association of the game with Orson Scott Card who is outspokenly anti-gay. However, gamers should not judge the game based on the author of the book but its gameplay.
Story
The story of Shadow Complex revolves around Orson Scott Card’s bestseller novel, “Empire.” The story has all the makings of an action thriller with conspiracy, intrigue and mystery telling the narrative of a second Civil War within the U.S. I am a fan of some of the work Card has done in the past such as “Ender’s Game.”
However, I am not a fan of his outspoken anti-gay political views. Since this issue became such a hot topic within the gaming community, gamers have been talking about boycotting the game. As Jim Sterling from Destructoid indicated, let’s move beyond the political controversy and judge the game based on its own merits.
The story of Shadow Complex starts you off as Jason Flemming who goes backpacking with girlfriend Claire. The couple stumbles upon some caverns where a mysterious army of men are preparing for a huge attack on the U.S. The story gets interesting as Claire gets captured and its up to Jason to rescue her and save the United States from Civil War. It’s a pretty tall order for a seemingly random hiker.
The premise for the story is actually quite good, but unfortunately the implementation into the game makes it seem like a secondary driver to the game.
Controls
The controls and gameplay is where Shadow Complex excels the most. For a downloadable XBL title, the game has an almost near full retail like polish to it. The game borrows heavily from the Metroid Prime series with even similar type weapons like the foam gun and the hook. The way you navigate and move around the level is also very similar to Metroid Prime revealing rooms as boxes on the map that need to be explored.

Chair Entertainment mixes things up in Shadow Complex by merging the 3D world with the 2D sidescrolling game. You will have to fight enemies walking in the background or foreground. Even though it can feel tacked on at times with a buggy aiming system, it helps keep you on your toes as to what is going on in the background. The best implementation of this change in perspective is when Jason finds a gun turret and it goes into a 3rd person shooting frenzy.
Visuals/Design
As I mentioned before, the visuals are top notch. This could be the best looking game on Xbox Live, excluding full downloadable games. You can see the Unreal Engine’s grittiness in the game. The boss battles look phenomenal and giant robot mechs will get your blood pumping. The rooms could use a bit of variety as many of the rooms look similar to each other lending to confusion at times.

The first speed run play through took me around three hours to beat with no adventuring at all. However with adventuring, the game took me six hours to complete with me liberally looking for hidden items and secret areas. It’s an interesting idea to use the flashlight to scan the room, I suspect in homage of Metroid’s scan function. I’m sure if you want to find all of the hidden items you could stretch the game out longer.
Despite all the similarities with Metroid, don’t confuse Shadow Complex as a clone as this game relies less on the analytical problem solving and more on the commando-style powerthroughs with high tech weaponry.

Wrap-up
Shadow Complex is a great game that will get you pumped for multiple playthroughs despite the fact its fairly short. Also, even though there is no multiplayer or co-op mode, the leadership board makes things interesting as you will be pitting against your friends to see how fast you can speed run through the game. If you have an Xbox 360 and subscribe to Xbox Live, Shadow Complex is a must have game. For those boycotting the game, do yourself a favor and stop torturing yourselves and buy the game. I highly recommend gamers to give Shadow Complex a shot as it is well worth the $15 or 1200 Microsoft Points.

Never heard or seen this game before it looks mediocre like every other XBL game… Enjoy LMFAO. Playing Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty.

Game looks great. I’d buy it if it was on ps3. Is it also coming out on pc?

great game!
August 29th, 2009
does this game as multiplayer?
August 29th, 2009
Awesome game. Ivan, remember, this is the game I told you looked kind of like a MGS/Uncharted and played like Super Metroid/Castlevania the week before last? This is it, and it is just as fun, and even more so… Ivan? Don’t miss out on the fun that is Shadow Complex. Note to Ivan: will not play on a hack 360.
Roca, no multiplayer, just a boatload of fun.

Someone needs to remake Flashback like Shadow Complex.
Be great.
August 29th, 2009
Everyone I know says it’s great and an amazing game for an Arcade (bit like BF1943).
“The controversy around the game stems from the association of the game with Orson Scott Card who is outspokenly anti-gay.”
WTF?
How is anyone ‘pro’ or ‘anti’ gay?
It’s a personal thing, you either are gay or you’re not gay.

carlB: I bet i can make work on my hack Xbox like i did Lost and Damned. You told me when? i must had forgotten. I hate game without online support. I checked out some review and videos and the game just doesn’t appeal to me. Also I’m not a big fan Xbox Live Aracde games. I’m using my PS3 web browsing feature to leave this message.

Yea unfortunately there is no multiplayer or online or local co-op but they do have online leaderboard support.
I hauled ass to beat Shadow Complex under 1 hour for my speed run just to spite one of my colleagues who was gloating his 1 hr 10 mins on the friends ranking list.
@SW,
Thats an awesome Idea! Mentioning Flashback brings back so many memories. I played that game off a single 5.25″ floppy disk.
Another great game published by Delphine Software is Another World. I actually replayed that last year on my emulator.
They ported Flashback on the iPhone, this might be an excellent candidate for PSN Minis.

“I hate game without online support.”
“Yea unfortunately there is no multiplayer or online or local co-op”
Ivan, do you really hate Uncharted? Wow.

‘How is anyone ‘pro’ or ‘anti’ gay?’
Never seen those people who spew hate about how gays are perverts etc? That is ‘anti-gay’.
@Mike
I always prefered Flashback over Another World. Gameplay wise I prefered Flashback of course, but I think I just loved the ‘hand drawn’/animated look of Flashback as opposed to the ‘early 3d’ look of A.W.

I hate 3 thing about 3 awesome PS3 exclusives and that is no online support.
UNCHARTED: Drake’s Fortune
inFamous
Heavenly Sword
August 30th, 2009
@Ivan,
If you mean “online support” as in multiplayer as Mike mentioned, I think some games were meant to be single player experiences, and they are better for that focus… these are the type of games I prefer. Awesome games like Mass Effect, Fable, Shadow Complex, and Dead Rising are memorable single player experiences because they were designed that way from the start.
When multiplayer gets slapped on it can come out awkward and or add a massive amount of time to an already long development cycle. Then again, multiplayer can add significantly to a game’s replayability, which means a lot if you buy instead of rent like I do, so I can understand where you are coming from.
Devs also seem to be listening by putting this in more games that were traditionally single player, like Resident Evil (5), so you will probably find even less things to hate in the future (Uncharted 2 will include it, and probably Infamous 2 and Heavenly Sword 2 if they ever make them).
At least Uncharted did get a patch for trophies, and if somebody was properly motivated they could put in a leaderboard similar to Shadow Complex, which would probably renew interest as well.
As it is, there is a resurgence of people playing Uncharted since the PS3 Slim came out, as it’s availability was high and then went to medium on gamefly, and… wow… I just noticed the 360 version of Tales of Vesperia went to number one in videogame sales on Amazon and is now beating PS3 Slim… interesting, and weird.
Anyway, back on point, Uncharted also went up in sales to number 26 on Amazon’s videogame sales list since the slim came out, and the PS3 version of Batman: Arkham Asylum (at #5 on the list) is currently outselling the 360 version (#8), which is probably due to a combination of the Joker missions and the Slim coming out.
I’m still amazed that the 360 Tales of Vesperia is number one (and 92 days in the top 100)… but it’s good news considering it is a quality JRPG.
August 30th, 2009
Tales of Vesperia will be ported to the PlayStation 3 and released on September 17, 2009 with additional content as well as a different logo.

Oops i thought it was being released here oh well i guess i can just skip it. I wouldn’t be able to play it anyways because I’m gonna be too busy with UNCHARTED 2.
August 30th, 2009
Ivan – it will get a US release, they just haven’t announced it yet. They already have it translated from the 360 version. I’m still not sold on that game though.
Mike – Batman review?!?!?!
August 30th, 2009
Side note – this is the first I’ve even heard about the “anti-gay” writer. As long as there’s nothing ignorant in the game itself, I don’t see why there would be a problem with the writer.

SW
“Never seen those people who spew hate about how gays are perverts etc? That is ‘anti-gay’.”
Yeah I know SW, it’s just the idea that you can ’support’ a sexuality as if it was a lifestyle choice.
I’m thinking about those hateful b@stards who claimed 9/11 was ‘God’ doling out some ‘deserved’ death and maiming.
It’s rediculous & pretty evil IMHO.
My best friends brother-in-law died of AIDS.
If it all became an up-close-and-personal reality so much closer to home for that sort of idiot I’m sure they’d not be so quick to find it all something to ‘use’ as a religious/moral hobby-horse.
……… or for that matter something that is in any way funny or fit to use it as a casual insult.

roca
How can you be anti a natural state of being for living creatures?
What do you have to take an ‘anti’ (or for that matter ‘pro’) stance over it for?
People are who they are, what would you do if one of your children turned out to be gay, or your brother or your sister etc etc?
What business is their sexuality of yours anyhow?
Wake up and leave the ridiculous outdated nonsense behind.
August 30th, 2009
they way I see it is that every living person/animal was created to keep thier existence by procreating themselves with their female kind (this has nothing to do with the bible). men have dicks (a stick) and women have pussys (a hole) for a reason, two men cannot give life or create another human being. if your dad was gay you probably wouldn’t be in this world right now. it is also believed that AIDs originally came from anal sex, (ur basically sticking your dick in a shit hole). But I also believe that this world is coming to its final days and strange things like this are going to happen, I have nothing against gay people, but I think they are bad influence for the community specially little kids who are kind of confused in life. well that’s just the way I see it, but again I have nothing against them, their influence on our younger generation (and those who get adopted by homosexsual)

I dont see any trophies on ur account? how the hell did you manage to solve all the riddler puzzles??
August 30th, 2009
wow I’m way behind. I am going for 100% of the riddles also. I still need to do some bat-backtracking. As far as the story.. I’m chasing Harley now.
Have you managed to beat the challenges yet? Some of them are pretty hard.
August 30th, 2009
Well I’m done with the campaign completely, just the challenges left. I only tried a few today, beat a couple of the brawling ones (only ‘bronze’ tho). Loving the stealth ones! Especially with the challenges such as ‘drag someone off a ledge with the grapple’… etc.

Roca
“they way I see it is that every living person/animal was created to keep thier existence by procreating themselves with their female kind”
Generally that is true…..but what about the gay animals?
It’s just a fact that as we look more and more species actually show a minority with ‘gay’ tendencies.
Plainly it is in fact a natural state of being.
“if your dad was gay you probably wouldn’t be in this world right now.”
Serious Roca, look around you.
The world is full of closet gay or bi people.
There are plenty who have had children ‘naturally’ or before they decided that they were in fact gay.
In fact the stereotypical serial ‘lothario’ supposedly straight lover is so cliché for someone confused & fighting their homosexuality.
“it is also believed that AIDs originally came from anal sex”
Actually that is simply not true (it sounds like homophobic fundamentalist hogwash).
AIDS is a virus and it is the nature of viruses to mutate.
AIDS has been linked to diseases that occur in the animal world although it has some nasty and unique characteristics all of its own.
Tell me Roca, do you think only gay people have anal sex?
Or that anal sex is something new?
“But I also believe that this world is coming to its final days and strange things like this are going to happen”
People have foretold ‘the end of days’ since the beginning of civilisation.
The world is always about to end, Christ is always about to come again and according to some Bhuddists there are now as many living now as have ever lived (and therefore all the souls that can have reincarnated).
The end is always nigh but for some reason always seems to never actually happen.
How are todays event any more strange than say the Black death in the 14th century?
(something which – seeing as it killed around 1 in every 3 – would surely have at least justified such notions a heck of a lot more?
Or WW1 or WW2?)
“I have nothing against gay people, but I think they are bad influence for the community specially little kids who are kind of confused in life.”
Roca nobodys sexuality is catching.
You either are or you are not or you swing both ways.
Nobody can actually ‘make’ you anything, least of all gay if you are straight.
Not even having gay parents.
Of course you could physically perform the act(s) but that is not ‘being’.
You are what you are and nobody can change that – and nor do they have any right to try and nor should they.
The only gauge parenting requires is that both parents (whatever their sex) be truly caring, loving and nurturing people who put the welfare of their children first.
The manner and type of sex you prefer has nothing to do with that
(and many straight parents are truly terrible parents – as our news proves day-in day-out)
In fact I’d say that any parent attempting to actively sexualise their young children (in any or either way) is acting in a manner incompatible with good parenting
(and their is no evidence – outside of the twisted minds of certain tabloid writers – that most gay people would attempt this any more than most staight people would).
Just my thoughts, I’m not looking to annoy or offend anyone by discussing it here – but at least it did genuinely get raised in relation to gaming.

Happyhockum, the link works! What the hell are you talking about?
Well, here is another link:
afterelton.com/movies/2006/3/ebert.html
And if the link doesn’t work, then here’s the quote showing poor Roger Ebert dealing with this crap:
——————
I’ve been told that I am evil. I’ve been told that I am behind the persecution of millions of Americans. That I have encouraged hate toward gays. I’ve received both very brief and obscene messages and very long and literate messages that tell me a vote for Crash was vote for homophobia. See, that is what I object to. It is not that I’m saying so much that homophobia didn’t have anything to do with it. But I do believe that it is quite possible to prefer Crash and not be a homophobe. I’ve received a lot of email that doesn’t seem to think so. You’re either with us or against us. If you are not a homophobe, you will vote for Brokeback Mountain. ——————
August 31st, 2009
And here’s The fury of the ‘Crash’-lash:
—————-
One of the mysteries of the 2006 Oscar season is the virulence with which lovers of “Brokeback Mountain” savaged “Crash.” When the film about racism actually won the Oscar for best picture Sunday, there was no grace in their response. As someone who felt “Brokeback” was a great film but “Crash” a greater one, I would have been pleased if either had won.
But here is Ken Turan in the Los Angeles Times, writing on the morning after: “So for people who were discomfited by ‘Brokeback Mountain’ but wanted to be able to look themselves in the mirror and feel like they were good, productive liberals, ‘Crash’ provided the perfect safe harbor. They could vote for it in good conscience, vote for it and feel they had made a progressive move, vote for it and not feel that there was any stain on their liberal credentials for shunning what ‘Brokeback’ had to offer. And that’s exactly what they did.”
And Nikki Finke, in the LA Weekly: “Way back on Jan. 17, I decided to nominate the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Best Bunch of Hypocrites. That’s because I felt this year’s dirty little Oscar secret was the anecdotal evidence pouring in to me about hetero members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences being unwilling to screen ‘Brokeback Mountain.’ For a community that takes pride in progressive values, it seemed shameful to me that Hollywood’s homophobia could be on a par with Pat Robertson’s.”
Yes, and more than one critic described “Crash” as “the worst film of the year,” which is as extreme as saying John Kerry was a coward in Vietnam. It means you’ll say anything to help your campaign.
What is intriguing about these writers is that they never mention the other three best picture nominees: “Capote,” “Good Night, and Good Luck” and “Munich.” Their silence on these films reveals their agenda: They wanted “Brokeback Mountain” to win, saw “Crash” as the spoiler, and attacked “Crash.” If “Munich” had been the spoiler, they might not have focused on “Crash.” When they said those who voted for “Crash” were homophobes who were using a liberal movie to mask their hatred of homosexuals, they might have said the same thing about “Munich.”
This seems simply wrong. Consider Finke’s “anecdotal evidence” that puts Hollywood’s homophobia on a par with Pat Robertson’s. Pat Robertson? This is certainly the most extreme statement she could make on the subject, but can it be true? How many anecdotes add up to evidence? Did anyone actually tell her they didn’t want to see the movie because it was about two gay men?
My impression, also based on anecdotal evidence, is that the usual number of academy voters saw the usual number of academy nominees, and voted for the ones they admired the most. In a year without “Brokeback Mountain,” Finke, Turan and many others might have admired “Crash.” Or maybe not. But it’s a matter of opinion, not sexual politics.
It is not a “safe harbor,” but a film that takes the discussion of racism in America in a direction it has not gone before in the movies, directing attention at those who congratulate themselves on not being racist, including liberals and/or minority group members. It is a movie of raw confrontation about the complexity of our motives, about how racism works not only top down but sideways, and how in different situations, we are all capable of behaving shamefully.
“Good Night, and Good Luck,” “Capote” and “Munich” were also risky pictures — none more so, from a personal point of view, than “Munich,” which afforded Steven Spielberg the unique experience of being denounced as anti-Semitic. “Good Night, and Good Luck” was surely a “safe harbor” for liberals, with its attack at a safe distance on McCarthyism — although it carried an inescapable reference to McCarthyism as practiced by the Bush administration, which equates its critics with supporters of terrorism.
“Capote” was a brilliant character study of a writer who was gay, and who used his sexuality, as we all use our sexuality, as a part of his personal armory in daily battle.
It is noticeable how many writers on “Hollywood’s homophobia” were able to sidestep “Capote,” which was a hard subject to miss, being right there on the same list of best picture nominees. Were supporters of “Brokeback” homophobic in championing the cowboys over what Oscarcast host Jon Stewart called the “effete New York intellectual”?
Of course not. “Brokeback Mountain” was simply a better movie than “Capote.” And “Crash” was better than “Brokeback Mountain,” although they were both among the best films of the year. That is a matter of opinion. But I was not “discomfited” by “Brokeback Mountain.” Read my original review. I chose “Crash” as the best film of the year not because it promoted one agenda and not another, but because it was a better film.
The nature of the attacks on “Crash” by the supporters of “Brokeback Mountain” seem to proceed from the other position: “Brokeback” is better not only because of its artistry but because of its subject matter, and those who disagree hate homosexuals. Its supporters could vote for it in good conscience, vote for it and feel they had made a progressive move, vote for it and not feel that there was any stain on their liberal credentials for shunning what “Crash” had to offer.

I think it’s pretty easy to understand.
Some within discriminated minorities have a tendency to fight very hard for their rights/equality.
Even when most of the rest of us either don’t see it as the big deal they do or don’t care.
And ley’s not kid ourselves, whatever advances have been made in recent years it sure as hell wasn’t just given to them.
Do some sometimes go too far to make a point?
You or I might say yes but then we do not live their reality.
Besides, that’s sometimes what some people can be relied upon to do, whatever their sexuality.
I might claim to ‘understand’ the daily discrimination and prejudice certain groups face but if I’m not a member of that group I may well just be kidding myself (and possibly insulting the reality they face).
