PS3 Slim sales boost – what it means for Wii and Xbox 360
The PS3 Slim has now been on sale for over a week and preliminary sales figures are starting to trickle in. Suffice to say, things are looking up for the Playstation 3. But will this sales boost continue past the initial buzz? And if so, what would this resurgence mean for the Wii and Xbox 360?
The new slimline PS3 was released worldwide on Sept. 1, at the same time as a “big” firmware update that did as much harm as it did good. Many people had been waiting for the PS3 Slim, and the price cut which came with it, before they were willing to buy a PS3. And early indications are that many of those people went out and bought one in its first week on sale.
VGChartz is reporting that worldwide sales of the PS3 Slim in the first week are around 500,000 units. If true, this signifies a 400 percent increase in sales on a week-to-week basis. Which would no doubt please Sony and prove the company correct for relaunching the console at this point in its life.
In Japan, an estimated 150,000 units were sold, twice the number sold in the PS3′s best sales week in the country. In the U.S. an estimated 125,000 units were sold, massively more than Sony would expect in a normal week. While a massive 250,000 units are predicted to have sold in all other territories, including Europe and Australia.
Chart-Track told GI.biz that sales of the PS3 Slim in its first week in the U.K. have increased 1,000 percent over the previous week. While the company wouldn’t reveal actual hardware figures, it claims the PS3 outsold the Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, and Wii by 3:1. Software sales are also up around 17 percent.
The question now is whether these sales will last beyond the first week. They’re bound to drop substantially after the initial burst of consumers desperate to get their hands on the console, but even selling more than the Xbox 360 would be a great result in the United States and Europe. If Sony can keep the pressure up over the holiday season and in to the new year then it would leave Microsoft and Nintendo needing to act.
But the two companies have little weaponry left at their disposal to fight back. Price cuts would seem to be out of the question for both the Xbox 360 and Wii. Microsoft would probably focus on Project Natal and a possible hardware relaunch of its own at that time. While Nintendo may be forced to push the long-rumored plans for a Wii HD through quicker than it had hoped.
This is of course all reliant on sales of the PS3 Slim staying above those of its rivals. Which it’s really too early to tell at this point. The next few months are going to interesting at least.

I believe that in the UK the 360 sales have gone up as well since the price cut. Not sure about the rest of the world but in the “USandA” it must be similar.
Conclusion – Stale mate for the bottom 2 consoles. The 360 will probably have the edge on the ps5th (which may climb to be the ps4th again) in sales while all the time Ninty don’t have to drop the price of the Wii and still comfortably outsell both.
I have to ask though. What has happened to sony’s sales campaigns these days? They done really well with the ps1 and 2 but they have really gone off the boil with the new ads. They are either pretentious or just plain boring. The new UK ad for the un-bloated ps5th is instantly forgettable.

The balance of the gaming universe will level out and it will be Wii, 360 … few other consoles … ps5th. Simple fact. The Wii has been at the top of sales pretty much unchallenged and it hasn’t had a price drop, new model or any of those ps5th savior games like MGS4, LBP and Killjoyzone 2.

Sorry, but Tekken (Arcade), Final Fantasy (NES/SNES), Tomb Raider (Saturn), GTA (PC first) already started and probably would have been successful series without PS. Regardless, there would definitely be a void without God of War, RE, and Uncharted on that list.

I expect PS3 sales to stay high for about 3 weeks, then drop to roughly match 360 sales, with the odd spike on either console when a major game is released. I would expect the 360 and PS3 to be on even footing until natal is released. What happens then is anyone’s guess. Unless the wii drops its price considerably I doubt it will rise above the 360 or PS3 from now on.

I don’t think the 250gb HDD is going to make much of a difference, either on the 360 or the PS3. The only thing that will see a massive spike for the 360 is either a significant price drop, which MS can’t really afford, a restyled casing like the PS3 slim, or Natal. Seeing as Sony have lost their exclusivity on 3 of their 4 major platform sellers (Tekken, Metal Gear Solid & Final Fantasy) the only real remaining major headache for MS is going to be GT5, which should shift a significant amount of PS3s. And before Ivan starts digging out his usual list of games, I am talking about the types of games that have transcended the gamer realm into public consciencness. The only two that MS really have are Halo and Gears of War.

Well, I guess if you want to mention Tekken and FF as former exclusives, don’t leave out Resident Evil, GTA, and Devil May Cry. The only thing Sony could do to lose even more exclusives is bow out and do a Sega.
And sorry, but WTF? You all talked about BD on PS3 like it’s the end all, but after seeing Watchmen tonight on blu-ray it looks equivalent to HD on Netflix streaming (sitting about 4 feet away from a 47″ 1080p), the sound was cutting out at times (my sound system, disc, and connection are fine), and the load times were just as long. I’ll still rent BD’s from Netflix for it, but Blu-ray is definitely not all that.

Uh, no Ivan… not nearly as many high profile titles. 360 can afford to lose them considering it is already in the lead and they have already taken the majority of sales for those titles. Sony has just been around home consoles longer than MS.

Actually, no, 1080p downloads and HD streaming rule all, no lie. Commercial physical disks take up room, degrade, are usually DRM, can’t be transferred to other devices, can’t be played on small portable devices, allow only one copy, and will soon be obsolete in just a few years time. Enjoy it for the relatively short time it lasts, I would just advise not to invest too much money in buying movies or games on them. Besides, you are all about pirating anyway, so what do you care about some DRM physical format? Copying?

No, I didn’t rent a slim, I have just been playing Shadow Complex and Batman on 360 since I bought it. Unreal Engine games always have better graphics on 360 you know, but I might rent the PS3 version just to try out the joker challenges. Uncharted was fun but short, even to get the platinum (EASY)… too bad. Looks like Defense Grid and Dust are going to take up my time next… nice.

CarlB I thought about those titles too, but they have been multi platform even prior to the release of the 360, so I didn’t include them. I’m surprised the PS3 is already slipping so quickly. I would have given it at least a couple of weeks at no 1. I guess there are only so many that Ivan can afford purchase
Get the full version of Defence Grid, it is well worth it for 800 points. The later levels get really tough, especially the ones with multiple entry and exit points!
Oh, and Ivan, if you like pirating so much, why not download HD rips of your favourite Blurays, seeing as you can fit them onto a DVD.

Having done Netflix on my 360 (when it was still alive) I can say that the “HD” netflix service is nowhere near BD quality. Compressed internet video can’t compare to disc period.
and if you have one of the new HDTV, running at 120+ mghz you will see that streaming in HD is not near BD quality.

Blu-ray Disc looks so good that it makes boring movies fun when they on Blu-ray Disc. I just got a new Bravia i broke the other one with my PSP. It was one funny and mad moment for me. The screen got fucked up. I wanted that 20 thousand dollars 70″ Bravia to put in my room. If only i was rich.

Watchmen is pretty good. It’s almost scene for scene, the same as the graphic novel. However, the movie botched the ending scenes. I won’t go in to detail and spoil anything, but I would suggest reading the novel first.

You’re right, I just compared the general picture quality to Lost on 360′s Netflix HD streaming. I think the HD streaming quality improved even more with the last 360 update.

I agree, that’s when they still knew how to market properly, and had a console that was much easier to program for and less expensive than the competition (Saturn), not vice versa as it is today with the 360.

By the time the ‘main campaign’ is done I’m generally bored with the mechanics of the game and the lack of a ‘fresh’ gameplay experience to bother trying for anything else. The exception would me multiplayer of course as things change because of fleshlings!

Yeah, I pretty much just let the trophies come as they will, and I don’t change the way I play to acquire them. I feel like playing that way creates a more “accurate” number on my Trophy Level. That, and I just don’t have time for nonsense these days. I’m hopeful I can fit more nonsense into my schedule sometime in the future, though.

I haven’t looked too closely, but I don’t think the Joker challenges are included in the trophies.
The 30 medals trophy (from getting 3x batarang medals in each challenge) is obscene. If I can get every other trophy but those, I will be happy.

What’s the deal with the “perfect combo”? Are you supposed to string together all melee moves and gadgets into a single combo? If so, that’s impossible.
I’m 50/50 with trophies. I like getting them, but I don’t drive myself insane trying to get them. A lot of the times, you have to do some tedious, time consuming things to get them all. That’s usualy were I draw the line.
I’m level 9 and have 0 Platinums. I’m actually really close for at least 4 or 5 games though.

I already achieved the perfect combo, it’s actually one of the easier achievements: try counter, stun, a couple of regular strikes until you are able to throw, batarang, critical strike, combo takedown, ground takedown, then batclaw, and you have it, simple.

I don’t care about Platinum trophies.
The only 2 games I’m trying to go for Platinum are Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 which I’m very close to getting. As for my other one which i gave up but still love playing Warhawk the game is hard to get trophies.

Press select for goal descriptions during the predator challenges, btw, lol. I finally figured that out last night, and well, went through them all even though it took me till 4am.
Now I just need some Joker Trophies!
