Can the PS3 now outpace and outperform the PS2?
The PS3 so far hasn’t really been the huge success Sony must have envisioned. It has failed to sell in the numbers needed to take it from last position in the home console market, losing out to the Xbox 360 and the Wii so far in its short life. But will the release of the PS3 Slim, which echoes the release of a slimline version of the PS2, mean the Playstation 3 can now outpace and outperform its predecessor?
The PS2 was a phenomenal success, building on the success of the original Playstation and helping turn gaming from a niche hobby to a mainstream activity. And it’s still doing rather well despite being almost 10 years old, with hardware sales continuing on and software sales also remaining healthy.
Things haven’t gone quite so well for the PS3 as of yet. Sales are OK but nothing to write home about, with both the Wii and Xbox 360 managing to outsell the Sony console in worldwide terms. The PS2 had a major hardware redesign four years in to its life cycle, and the PS3 has just had its major face lift, less than three years after launch.
The question is whether this relaunch, a change of advertising strategy, and the line-up of big-name exclusive games can propel the PS3 to PS2-like success? SCEE chief Andrew House certainly thinks so and in an interview with Edge magazine (via Digital Spy) suggests the PS3 has many years ahead of it to catch up with the PS2. He said:
If you look at the PS2, still in some markets going very strong, especially in North America in its tenth year on the market, we still can’t predict where that lifecycle will end. I have a theory that with successive generations, and with more value added and built into the console in terms of experience – and let’s not forget that the PS2 really didn’t offer a tremendously robust network experience – that what you effectively do is potentially lengthen that life cycle more and more as you get to the next iteration.
A longer life doesn’t necessarily guarantee success but as an article on Punch Jump suggests, the recent rebranding and redesign should give the console a better chance at leaving its predecessor in the dirt.
From the new slimmer console to the new PS3 logo designed to help consumers associate the current-gen with the Playstation brand. And from the new lower price point to the new advertising campaign which seems to bring it back to basics, showing people what the console can do and what games are available on it.
These are all plus points for the PS3. Whether they’re enough to shift units is another matter.

I doubt the PS3 will outsell the PS2 record it might get close only. Yes this price cut redesign and new ads will help SCE more also the exclusives are amazing everyone seems to adore them. In ten years like PS2 i see the PS3 back in #1. Sony has built the PS3 with future prove technology like the Cell Broadband Engine, Blu-ray Disc, upgradable HDD compatible with laptops also a free online service that works very well. Sony is doing fine and will continue succeeding beyond our dreams. The PlayStation brand is huge also. Sony has the most video game developer too with the most exclusives and the best that’s huge too. Sony is here for gamers not just for our money like the competitors are they don’t care about games.

It’s the same for the 360 as well as the PS3. Both systems have to last longer, simply because they have too.
IMO, the long term momentum of the PS3 or 360 simply depends on either Sony or MS ever securing the GTA timed exclusiveness like Sony had in the past.
Before I get shouted down…given that GTAV will almost certainly be using the same engine, making it won’t be as expensive or take as long…and in many respects, the next GTA probably won’t be GTAV at all, but rather a Vice City equivalent.
MS’ long term future ilooks to be dictated by Natal, so for Sony, E3 2010 will go a long way into showing how serious Sony are about the long term for the PS3.

You know, I agree with the general sentiment. Someone posted a great quote that I saw on NeoGaf, along the lines of “Sony will have the greatest games this year, while MS will have the most financially successful”.

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand the “PlayStation is a big brand” thing.
So once was Walkman. Not any more though.
Game Boy was once a synonymous brand in portable gaming. But Nintendo managed to transition from Game Boy to DS with no loss of market share, and probably just at the right time, as Game Boy the brand was going out of fashion.
I fear Sony are going to stay with the PlayStation name until kingdom come…much like they continue to do with the Walkman brand, without releasing that it’s about 10 years out of date.
It is true though that MS have poured billions into the Xbox brand without being anywhere close to being the market leader. I guess it’s a person’s opinion as to how much potential there is for the Xbox brand to grow.

what would suck! GTA4 graphics are horrible IMO. GTA4 only succeeded in the “story” department by other than that, GTA: VC and GTA: SA were way better than GTA4.
but know Rockstar is working on Agent which is “going to take advantace” of the PS3 hardware specs. I Agent turns out to look good then they can used that engine for their next GTA.

but anyways…….I dont think GTA matters as much as it did during the PS2 era. they main reason is for being multiplatform. second reason is because GTA: VC and SA set a pretty high standard for the GTA series, it took about 40 mins in GTA: SA to go from one side of the map to the other. that was pretty amazing!
GTA was a big seller series for the PS2, M$’s got Halo/ Gears of War as their big seller now and Sony is still trying to find theirs (GT5 and GoW3 might be their answer) but on the other hand Sony is pleased with their software sales because they release so many games on a year basis that when you combine all those game sells you get a pretty high figure

I doubt even the Wii will be able to match the success of the PS2. The PS3 hasn’t got an icecube’s chance in hell. They would have to sell another 120million over the next 7 years to surpass the PS2. That means 17 million a year or 320.000 a week, double what they are currently doing.

it won’t reach the sales of the ps2. simply b/c the ps2 was made so poorly, while sony ignored the problem, that most ps2 owners had to buy more than 2 ps2 to get one that worked more than a year.
This allowed sony to pad their numbers quite heavily. the ps3 is made better so it won’t have the lawsuit inducing hardware the ps2 had…..

Only time will tell; I believe that the PS3 won’t reach the PS2 sales milestone, but I definitely believe that the PS3, along with the 360, that both will hit the 50 million sales mark. It’s practically inevitable at this point.

The PS2 will go down as “the most Successful Console” in Gaming History.
I doubt the the PS3/360/Wii will ever catch the PS2 in units sold, (the PS2 is still doing well in sales) but if would have ended the PS2′s life 2 years ago then the PS3/360 would have been in a better position. I also dont think the PS3/360 will ever catch the PS2 in “total game library”. I think if you combine all the 360, PS3 and wii (and maybe add all the Original Xbox games too)games they will still fall short to the PS2 massive library

The new price is certainly helping, but I don´t think the PS3 will outsell the PS2. These are my reasons:
1) The price tags of both consoles and their corresponding economical climates at launch are too different.
2) The PS2 was a success almost from the beginning.
3) The PS2 is still selling today, making it harder to reach. I once read that in the India, the PS2 is still the number 1 console.
4) Nintendo and Microsoft are in better position that the last generation.
I could be wrong though. 140 millions is still a small number compared to world population. We may have a clearer view with the NPD (and other) reports in the following months. However, I am certain that they have achieved profit (which is a step in the right direction) and things will look better for Sony from now on.

I’m sure a high percentage of the 360′s bought are for replacement consoles. Thats the real reason the arcade has no HDD. The ADD 360 fanbase that can’t wait the weeks for the repair have a fall back option.
Are you really going to tell me people haven’t done that.
How many people with broken 360′s simply picked up an arcade and only opened the console using all their other stuff in place, until they can turn around and return the arcade in 30 days.

I got 6 fat PS2 some from 2001 and 2003-4 never had problems only one time my PS2 couldn’t read the fucking ICO and Midnight Club blue disc. I rarly had problems with consoles.

Actually kev.. you never asked me those questions. Mostly because I couldn’t care less about either franchise (which Ive said in the past)
#3 is good. I know you can’t tell the difference between facts and speculation, as all your speculation you believe to be facts. I wonder how many consoles were repaired instead of replaced. We could switch that sentence around whichever way, and the end results will be the same. You don’t have numbers and neither do I. I in fact know people that replaced instead of repaired. Or replaced during a repair and then returned it. Mostly they sell the refurbished on Ebay and keep the arcade with their old HDD. Thats just from personal experience. If you speak for all ps2 owner with your “three” broken consoles, I’ll believe the three 360 owners I know that did this should be sufficient.

I just saw again the trailer for GT5 and GT PSP it blow me away again looks amazing also cnet ran poll which game is better guess who won. And the PSP version looks so good wow. PSP is so damn high tech like PS3 only bad thing is that for the PSP there’s no online play just ad-hoc

LoL so much for HDMI and optical on my “future proof” PS3… looks like I’ll have to finagle some other kind of connection to get stable sound out of this game. Didn’t have any problems with sound on Uncharted (though it did freeze constantly towards the end on crushing difficulty), which tells me this is probably more to do with firmware, but who knows. More guesswork and effort on the new customer’s part. Thanks Sony.

I also didn’t have any problem with optical on The Watchmen BD, so I’m thinking more and more this is a firmware update problem with older games… I just switched the optical from going to the switch from the PS3 to taking it out of the PS3, leaving the HDMI, and attaching the optical from the TV to the switch instead. Works fine now.

I’m so lucky i haven’t had any problems nor had my family with their PS3 or with any firmware update on PSP or PS3. And as for the sound goes i never had any problems either my HDMI cables cost me $100 i got 4 good cable. Watchmen is really one of the best movies to watch on Blu-ray Disc.

Yes. I have had it practically since launch. You can get it on almost any output cable… and I’ve had it on my VGA, works like a charm and never any cut out on audio for any game, movie, or show.

I consider myself to be a hardcore MGS fan, but that plane ride was really long. Wasn’t it like 40 minuets or so?
I still consider it to be one of the best games I’ve played, but it is literally 50/50 cut scenes to game play. Which is understandable since it is the final chapter in an epic saga.
As far as character development, dialog, and story are concerned, it’s by far one of the best games to date.

Sorry, it was just an initial reaction from something I wasn’t used to this gen. If the game is fun of course it will be worth load times.

I reseated the cable a couple of times and it still didn’t work, then just used the same cable coming from the TV to the stereo instead and it worked fine. They say it has something to do with HDMI and optical going out at the same time on Slims, but I fixed it… no big deal now.

Your level is calculated by the number of trophies you have. Trophies come in a number of grades; bronze, silver, gold and the mighty platinum. Obviously, the more of the higher level trophies you have, the higher your level will be.
2 bronze trophies = 1 silver trophy
3 silver trophies = 1 gold trophy
6 bronze trophies = 1 gold trophy.

The percentage shown on your ID tag, is the percentage to get to your next level. It’s out of 100%. The higher your level gets, the more trophies you need to get to the next level.
I’m at 9 now, and I think bronze trophies = 1/3 of a percentage or so.

ivan – i used to disk swap on the original ps… i never had a problem then, and i still don’t..
i’d rather spend 5 seconds swapping a disk than sitting through a 10 minute install, eating up valuable HDD space, before getting to the gameplay…
it’s funny that multiple disks were NEVER complained about until the ps3 fanboys showed up… even by lifelong ps gamers….

I would take any day a 5min install at the beginning (just like PC) and then enjoying the game stoppage free, than starting to play and then disc swap. I’d hate for some of you guys to be a PC owner, some install times for PC can be 15-20mins.

I just said that it wasn’t that much of an issue if the game was worth it, but that I wasn’t used to it for the last almost four years of this gen. There is no “stoppage” if you have only 1 disc on 360, and only 2-3 points of a couple of seconds if you have 2-3 discs (which is only in about 2-3 games that I have played or will play), vice 5-10 minutes at the beginning and sometimes (like with MGS4) throughout on a PS3. It is not unbearable. I will still play PS3 games. But it is a difference. It is noticeable. And it is not a “superior” experience in any way.

I don’t “want to make an issue”, I just mentioned it because it existed, wasn’t used to it from gaming on 360, and I mentioned it (with the caveat that I would still deal with it and other existing issues on PS3 in order to play unique games, but multiplats that play the same or actually even look better on 360? I don’t think so).

Maybe on PS3, but it really never was a huge issue on 360 (although the load times did reduce on it as well for the two games, and without BD).

(for something PC users have been doing for years without complaint) This is the most piffle, futile argument I have ever seen on this blog …. Oh no, I have to install a game, Oh no I have to swap a disc or too. BIG F$^&G DEAL.

installing is an issue now huh? lol
and you guys were raving about DD, and games on demand, and how you can install L4D, Forza3 not too long ago.
5-10 mins install is nothing and it does not make one console better than the other. like spidey said PC owner has been doing it for years.
the install only becomes an issue if you dont have enough space, which wont be a problem for PS3 owner

Carlb – I have to ask, why AREN’T you installing on the 360? Or is this more of a ‘forced install’ thing?
Everything I played on the 360 I install, bearing in mind I only play 1-2 games at a time but I understand how it would become an issue if I played more than that.
I only mention this because its the easiest way to shut the damn thing up, its one loud mofo when playing games (not that the ps3 fat isn’t..)

I myself don’t have a problem with mandatory install. they should included that for all games as optional to load even faster. Imagine UNCHARTED 2 that doesn’t need it with this the game will be so fucking fast.
I’m never had any problems with PS3 games. On Xbox 360 when i got GTA IV and still on my Arcade model it freezes like a mother fucker for no reason, other then the Xbox 360 console.
Xbox 360 would be better if it had mandatory install there’s a lot of games that need it.

SW, I do install my games on the 360, yet they seem to take less time to install and once installed there is no more installs for the rest of the game (unlike with MGS4), and no real load time issues.
Roca, I’m not saying it makes one console better than the other, I was just saying I wasn’t used to it taking that long for installs and loading times. Pay attention to what I said, “it’s worth it if the game is good”. And I think Uncharted was worth the long update, install, loading times, and freezing issues. In fact I think it is a lot more fun and worth the trouble than MGS4 (at least so far).
Anyway, how do you go about installing the entire game on the HDD for PS3 (I’m guessing this would eliminate the need to wait for further installs throughout MGS4)? I couldn’t seem to find the option for Uncharted or MGS4…

Lets be honest, MGS4 is a MASSIVE game though !! A one off install may have been better, but I suppose it comes down to how much HD space it would take?

I’d love to have full installs. No one really knows the size of PS3 games tho. The best you can do it look at the ISO’s that have been dumped but even thats not %100.

That option is stupid. And if you have any PC with a Blu-ray Disc drive you can insert the Blu-ray Disc and see the full ISO size. The dumped already are %100 accurate.

One of the great options I like about PS3 is the ability to use large hard drives, whereas 360′s is ridiculously overpriced. But even with my 120GB I would have thought I could install the entire game just to bypass most of those loading and install times throughout a game like MGS4 (which I thought was the entire point of installing the game, let alone a mandatory install?). Even if it was maxing out a DL disc I would still have about 50GB left. I suppose it would take forever though as the drive is much slower than the 360′s (and yes, much larger disc capacity as well). At least the good news is we can look forward to games like Uncharted 2 that are supposed to have no interruptions throughout the game.

Calm down buy more games and relax have fun enjoy it or sell it. I’m willing to buy it off you. You need to try that don’t use that well at least not much below 150 MB like Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 and many more. I think once you place Killzone 2 you would never go back to dissing the PS3 if you like FPS you would adore this master piece.

infamous had no interruptions throught the whole game, Uncharted one had almost no load times (besides the freezing you were experiencing, but the patch is now live) and no install, MGS4 is the exception and it makes up for it. KZ2 has no install, Heavenly Sword has no install (you should give this one a try) Resistance 1&2 has not install(Give Resistance a change too, the game is really fun, challenge, superb narrative storyline and really “long” for a FPS)…Sadly mandatory install are a thing of the past.
BlazBlue, SF4, SC4, and a few more have optional install.

No prob phranc. The Sceptre has a lot of input/output options as well, so no worries there either. They’re local and not nearly as well known, so I’m guessing this keeps their prices down, not to mention the point of diminishing returns that also occurs in PC’s: i.e. 1000+ dollars for a “2ms” improvement and improved contrast ratio on a stat that is already pretty impressive, especially if you haven’t already sunk your money into an HDTV yet.
I understand they have pretty good customer service as well, but I’ve never had any problems with either of my two over the last four years. If they can survive my move to Okinawa (and back after two years there) I plan on keeping them for a long time… at least until 2160p or holographic displays come about
