August NPD Sales – PS2 sales decline, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS & PSP all up
July was a slow month in gaming with sales dropping for the past five months. However, August looks to be a new month with some indication of the holiday season finally creeping upon us. Almost all of the platforms increased in August from July, with the PS3 taking an exceptional leap. Unfortunately, the legendary PS2 continues its downward spiral.
Last month the video game sector hit rock bottom with sales reaching all time lows for the year. However, it’s good to see things are starting to pick up as the latest NPD report (U.S. only) indicates that nearly all platforms picked up from last month.

The industry did see a 16 percent drop year-on-year to $908.72 million for hardware, software and accessories. However, it is still an improvement from the 29 percent year-on-year drop last month. As Dave indicated last month, the video game sector did not start to recover like other market sectors in July. However, August may be the first signs of recovery for the video game sector.
Nintendo
Despite the dramatic drop in demand for the Wii and DS, sales have improved over last month. The DS sales increased by a nice 14,000 units this month and the Wii increased by 25,200 units. Despite the nice total sales of 830,300 units between the Wii and DS, Nintendo has been hit the hardest out of all of the console manufacturers. However, with the company turning a nice profit on each unit sold, Nintendo is definitely still laughing its way to the bank.
Microsoft
The Xbox 360 sales seem to be the most consistent out of all of the consoles. The sales increased by 12,500 from last month, which is a nice little bump. It is unknown how much of an impact the Elite price drop made to the sales for the month of August. I’m sure we should get the full picture next month with the price drop in full effect along with the anticipation of Halo 3: ODST.
Sony
Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly depending on how you look at it), the PS3 witnessed the biggest sales jump out of the consoles. The PS3 sales almost doubled from last month and increased by 88,200 units. It looks like the PS3 price drop and the sales of the Slim near the end of the month really helped. The PSP also saw a nice increase in sales by 17,500 units helped by the release of Dissidia: Final Fantasy which sold 130k units in August (7th highest software) despite releasing on the 25th. Unfortunately, the beast that is the PS2 is continuing to show signs of decline. Overall, Sony is looking pretty good with a total of 455,300 units sold between the PS3, PSP and PS2.

Not really, considering 360 was actually number one in software sales and even beat out the Wii. KZ2 numbers haven’t even broken 2 mil, but it isn’t “embarrassing” nor does it mean there is a lower attach rate for PS3 exclusives… or does it?

I really doubt Sony is losing that much sleep over a decline of 3,000 consoles from the month before.
In fact the ps2 has been around the 100k-115K mark all year.
for 3K units, it really wasn’t worth mentioning at all, and especially not in the title.
sucks about Batman AA. There are so many catch up games that I tossed that on my rent/borrow from friend list.
I’m also thinking of catching Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 when it drops dirt cheap for a day (just to fuck the Xmas return people without receipts).
Although I could probably wait three months and it will drop anyhow. Kind of like how Bioshock, Oblivion, and NGS all dropped in price real quick as a 360 version was out for a bit.

“little substance” – serously? I didn’t clock my playtime, but the campaign kept me more then satisfied for a few weeks, and I have only now started to work on the challenge modes. I haven’t even touched the Joker yet.
Plus… both 360 & PS3 are getting free DLC next week.
COD = an OK looking game with little substance. Not Batman.

The challenge rooms are pretty cool. My only complaint is that it doesn’t tell you what you need to actually do in order to finish them. You need to do 3 things to complete the predator challenges, but it doesn’t tell you what they are exactly.

Having a blast on the 360 version, but I’m not sure for yours, though it should be the same or similar:
When you are in the challenge and it has started hit the back button (select on PS3) and it shows you exactly what to do for each medal.

KZ2 is a major PS3 exclusive that was supposed to sell like hotcakes, and it looks like Batman will actually exceed it’s sales on the same platform within a shorter period of time. Saying Batman AA having slightly higher sales worldwide does not mean it has a higher attach rate as you stated, especially when the title has extra free content and coincided with the Slim release. Saying the 75%+ of multiplat and exclusives that have sold better on 360 would have more weight in determining it actually has the better attach rate.
The only reason I posted about PS3 going down on Amazon best seller because it was mentioned here in an article here and then Ivan seemed obsessed with tracking Tales of Vesperia on it going down. The perception for some here when it was number 1 for a little over a week would be that it would stay number one on the chart for some time. Not the case.
If you think a showcase title for the system freezing on a brand new unit, sound cutting out every 5-7 seconds on another showcase title, getting server errors consistently and getting disconnected because of them, and mandatory installs (and corresponding time to play any disc based game) are “lil issue(s)” well I guess that is your opinion. They are not to me because I have not experienced the majority of them for the last 4 years of gaming on my 360 (old or new).
At the same time, I did have to replace my nearly four year old 360 recently and use the same hard drive, so I’m not saying it’s perfect either, I just didn’t have all these problems from the start or anytime throughout the last few years. I guess it will take some time to get used to gaming with these “lil issues”.

well guess what, My 360 got the Fatal RRoD and before it, the 360 scratched the fuck out my L4D aand my Fallout 3. so basically I ended up with with a dead system and 2 unplayable games. thats MAJOR ISSUES (and you dont see me coming here everyday reminding ppl my bad experience with the 360) specially the 2 games, because even if I get another 360 I wont be able to play L4D again (I got Fallout for the PS3).
as for mandatory install, MGS4 is you first game with mandatory install and you are already complaining about it. there are a few titles that have mandatory install, Uncharted as you know has None. mandatory install dont bother me as long as it makes a better gaming expierience.
FFXIII on the 360 is going to have some huge install you know.

Sounds like you had a bad experience with 360 and I didn’t. Sorry. Vice versa with PS3 and me: I have had some bad experiences with it in the short time I have had it and you haven’t. Oh well. I only mentioned the problem once or am answering other people, sorry if you think that is out of line.
Uncharted had an update which took some time as well, no biggie. Install time on 360 for FF shouldn’t take that much longer than it does on PS3, no biggie. The riddler’s challenges aren’t part of the main game either. Your complaint was there wasn’t anything to do after finishing the main game, false. Whether you care about what is there or not is up to you.

Naughty Dog Maxed the PS3 processing power, meaning the are utilizing all of it because the game has so much going on. but for example KZ2 utilized 30% of the PS3 processing power, which mean there is room to grow for a game like Killzone 2.
Uncharted 2 takes up a FULL BD disc, but KZ2 used about 45%.

We all know Naughty Dog really didn’t maxed out the beast. They did use at least almost everything. I’m not trying to argue or anything i higly doubt the full Blu-ray Disc is full. They only said it was a single layer they used 25gb which is amazing huge.
I’m pretty sure Sony can bo way better then K2 and UNCHARTED 2 which both are driving nutz i cannot wait until i get my copies of UNCHARTED 2. I’m try to cheat my way up jk

I think nobody can really be surprised that Batman AA and Madden are the top selling games on both platforms.
As far as Naughty Dog maxing out the PS3, I think its going to be different for each studio and their development process…
For example I noticed Naughty Dog is very keen on creating a game where there is zero load screens besides the initial startup load.
This has to be extremely processor intensive process as the Cell is cranking out at a higher threshold non-stop than other traditional games.
I am very much interested in Rage as the graphics really impressed me with their unconventional uncompressed texture approach. I always get excited about a studio trying to push new technical boundaries.

Sure, which means they should be able to do the exact same thing that Naughty Dog did with Uncharted 1 which also used only 30% – max it out and see similar improvements. Considering it took ND another two years for a sequel, Guerilla should be able to do the same by 2011. Right around that time or soon after we should be getting into the next gen.

Maybe just a tad bit when it comes to potential able to be gleaned by devs, “ok”?
I was just trying to say if both games utilized, as stated by the devs (if I am to believe what you stated about KZ2), only “30%” of the PS3’s power, both games should see a similar increase from the original release on PS3 to the next, and Guerilla would also have maxed out PS3 with their sequel within a similar period of time. I think we’re both on the same page here.

Guerrilla is working on a new IP, which might not be an FPS.
and maxing out the processing power and maxing out the PS3 are two different things. because if you look at GOW3, Heavy Rain, GT5, R&C future and more you will see the PS3 still has awesome looking games that might surpass KZ2 and Uncharted 2
