Where now for Nintendo – Wii price cut to counter PS3, Xbox 360 cuts?

September 12, 2009

Where now for Nintendo - Wii price cut to counter PS3, Xbox 360 cuts? The Wii has done phenomenally well since it was released, grabbing a huge market share and leading the PS3 and Xbox 360 consistently since the three have been on sale together. But things are starting to slow down in the Nintendo camp, and the price cuts for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 and slimline redesign of the PS3 mean it has to act, and fast. So, where to now for the Wii?

Nintendo hit big with the Wii, which alongside the DS has meant for a very successful, ultra-profitable generation this time around. The Wii is currently sitting pretty at the top of the console sales charts, and sales are still impressive enough. However, they aren’t anywhere near impressive as they were this time last year and Nintendo needs to do something about that or risk the Wii tailing off before its time is up.

The NPD sales figures for August show that the Wii is still the bestselling home games console and actually improved on previous month’s sales by a fraction. But sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 were also up and the whole thing is looking a lot closer than it has been for a couple of years. And not just in the States either, with the suggestion that the bubble is beginning to burst in all the major territories.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter stated in an industry note which direction he thinks it’s going to go in as we approach the important holiday season. He said:

The late August price cut for the PS3 clearly drove a pick-up in demand, with that console’s sales up 73 percent sequentially, and we expect another 50 – 100 percent sales growth in September.

Until the late August PS3 price cut, the Xbox 360 appealed to consumers, likely due to a higher perceived value proposition (the Xbox 360 ‘core’ model was priced $100 lower than the PS3). With the core PS3 and Xbox 360 models priced only $50 higher than the Wii, we expect year-over-year sales of Wii hardware to continue their annual declines until the company either changes its bundle or lowers price.

Wii unit sales are 50 percent below last year’s level over the last five months, and we think that September sales will repeat the pattern.

Basically, sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 are going to continue to climb, especially the PS3, while the Wii is starting to fester. And it’s a festering that looks set to continue or even get worse if Nintendo doesn’t act to stop the rot.

Nintendo could of course cut the price of the Wii. That would be the obvious first move to make and would counter the moves Sony and Microsoft have both made in recent months. But I personally don’t think it would have that much effect on sales. The PS3 and Xbox 360 are selling better after price cuts because they were formerly well above hitting the sweet spot for price. Whereas the Wii has spent its whole life in that sweet spot.

If few people would be persuaded to buy a Wii at a lower price, what options does Nintendo have left? A new bundle, possibly with an appealing gem such as Wii Fit thrown in, could reinvigorate sales. Otherwise I can only imagine a more definite change of direction would be needed. And that would have to be the Wii 2 or Wii HD that has long been rumored.

I don’t know why Nintendo would want to copy Sony and Microsoft and release a HD Wii. Why just join the crowd when they’ve been so successful doing their own thing?

  2. Ivan_PSP:

The PLAYSTATION 3 is definitely going up in sales every where. The Wii is crap and i bet the will never be a Wii HD or Xbox 720 made up rumors.

The Wii is crap, but I don’t think Nintendo gives a fuck.

Once the Wii hits $199, it’ll be booming again.

Nintendo already decided not to lower the Wii price.

    Just saw this elsewhere:

“Left 4 Dead’s latest DLC, dubbed “Crash Course” is available for free to PC players, while it costs the Xbox 360 players 560 Microsoft points”

This is one reason why I get cranky at MS. If you want anything from MS, you gotta pay for it, even if it’s not their content. I like my 360, but get shitty about continually having to shell over money to them when it’s free elsewhere.

    Rant over ;)

Yes kev sounds very scared and insecure we all know why. And i care. I gave up on buying Xbox 360 crap. I got 120GB and Blutooth headset Play & Charge Kit and the Keypad. For PS3 i also got 2 Blutooth headset from Warhawk and SOCOM headset. And i got the keypad too. and 500gb and 320gb plus 60gb and 80gb.

Thats a cop out Carl. The point of the fact is, MS is charging for free content. Period. It’s got nothing to do with it not being on ps3, as you seem very eager, across threads to point out??

I agree with Spidey. paying for free content is not acceptable, specially being from one the richest company in the world

  29. CarlB:

The point is people will pay for it if it is quality and they don’t have the ability to play it on another console/platform (PS3/PC). It is cheaper for them to shell out $6 than the hundreds it would take to get a decent gaming computer.

  30. CarlB:

And Spideydog, it has a great deal to do with it not being on PS3. The reason I bring it up about not being on PS3 is not to claim 360′s superiority (even though it is a great game not on PS3), but rather to state that it not being a full multiplat is a factor. If it was, then we would see the real difference between how Sony and Microsoft (home consoles, not pc, which is a different beast) deal with it, anything else is pure mentalism. Besides this, it does cost money to distribute the content itself, and neither Sony or Microsoft is in a position to just give moneymakers like this away and pay for it at the same time.

  31. Akaro:

Nintendo games´ may be/look childish, but their marketing and bussiness strategies are not. I do not have any bussiness credentials, but if I were them I would have prepared for this moment since mid 2007. No one knew how long would Wii´s bubble last and it would be silly to think they haven´t foresaw this and prepared accordingly.

Sony and MS are giants: hungry, powerful, relentless and (worst of all) intelligent. So Nintendo NEED to act accordingly, keeping a distance and showing the due respect.

Going HD is NOT “keeping a distance”, it´s more like a small boxer trying to get into the inner zone of a towering yudoka and a huge greco-roman wrestler. You can (should) addapt but you must never play your rival´s game: you must play your own.

  32. Ivan_PSP:

Left 4 Dead screams dated quality. The only game Valve that was at least worth playing was Half-Life 2.

I pointed out before how Epic has released all their DLC for UT3 for free on the PS3.

If Valve was in the same situation as Epic was and wanted to give their stuff away, The treatment Epic got may very well have also come to Valve.

The end result…. MS wouldn’t charge for the content too.

proof of this is that there is a lot of free Burnout Paradise content, that was free for both.

Lets face it. If that content was only on the 360 the fans would get charged.

The European Commission’s June 2007 investigation of disc scratches

On June 1, 2007, European Commissioner for Consumer Protection Meglena Kuneva, after talking with the producers of “Kassa” and other Dutch consumer organizations, announced that the European Commission would investigate the Xbox scratching problems, and would ask Microsoft for an Xbox replacement program for the whole of Europe. She expected Microsoft’s answer within a week. Informal sources now say that Microsoft’s response was to deny the problem exists, stating that “the users are to blame”. But Kuneva did not react to that response, and 18 months later (4th quarter 2008) the EC’s (Meglena Kuneva’s) news site was still silent about Microsoft’s response, or about the result of the “investigation”.

    Lawsuit

A man who claims Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 scratches game discs has sued the company, saying the consoles are “negligently designed and manufactured.” In the lawsuit filed on July 9, 2007, in a Florida federal court, Jorge Brouwer says Microsoft has received thousands of complaints but has not replaced all scratched discs. The lawsuit seeks class-action status.

Three law firms in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Los Angeles, California, and Seattle, Washington are investigating consumer complaints regarding the Xbox 360. The law firms have filed lawsuits in the United States District Court Western District of Washington at Seattle on behalf of a proposed nationwide class of customers who have suffered scratched game discs while using their Xbox 360. The lawsuit seeks class certification and reimbursement for customers for the cost of games damaged by the console; reimbursement for customers who have paid a $20 fee to Microsoft Corporation under a limited disc replacement program offered on ten Microsoft games; repair of consoles free of charge to prevent further disc scratching; and/or reimbursement for customers who have paid for an aftermarket repair solution.

BBC Watchdog Investigation of Xbox 360 disc scratches (2009)

On March 23, 2009, the BBC’s consumer interest programme Watchdog performed an investigation into how the console scratches its own discs, after Microsoft found no issues with multiple reportedly defective consoles. A sealed test, protected from any outside interference beyond accessing games, found no problems with either console. However, a further test which attempted to simulate normal household vibrations produced a disc scratch on the previously problematic console.

Currently, Microsoft still maintains that it is the user’s fault when discs are damaged, because it “makes clear with multiple warnings not to move the console with the disc inside.” It also maintains that only a minority of customers are affected by this issue. However, the company did not comment on the lab tests.

ummm… just like Sony tried selling Epics content….. oh wait they didn’t.

The thing that I seem to notice is, that if a developer voices an opinion that they would prefer not to sell their content, Sony seems to allow that. Take it whatever way you want.

At no point am I saying Sony doesn’t try and sell us stuff. Simply that they seem to fold under the developer pressure

Epic is the perfect example as they came out and said that they would have preferred to give away the gears content.

Was your problem with PS3. And why did you even buy one,? if you obviously hate it with all your guts. I’m glad Killzone 2 is next on your list so you can see how great the game is the story won’t be epic but if you liked Left 4 Dead anything is possible. The graphics will blow you away the control scheme is a little similar to the one in Call of Duty. Also Killzone 2 has a ton a replay value i got over 5000 kills online already and everything else too but it took me a while i got all the map packs also. Also it has 2 similar things with Gears of Wars you will notice when you play online and get the last map pack. Killzone 2 is worth every penny.

How does Killzone 2 work on your PC CON?

    just wondering…..

Sales seem to matter to you but in the end you miss some great titles, while most of the so called “360 exclusives” find their way to the PC.

I’m actually surprised at the success of L4D, given how little substance is actually in the game.

L4D console exclusivity is ticking down, and valve has been looking for ps3 programmers for a while now.

  59. SW:

I have to admit being lured into the L4D world.

Valve has being looking for some real developers to make PS3 games. I hope Gabe doesn’t eat them alive. PS3 has a lot of amazing games anyone that misses any of them is just a pure FANBOY or just a ignorant idiot. And yes Xbox 360 has basically no exclusive since they all on PC.

    CON: “Greatest hit LOL

    @ CON

what an idiot! I hate when ppl talk shit without having any idea of what they are talking about.

-so what is your definition of “Greates Hits”?????

-When Sony introduced the program for PlayStation in 1997, games could become Greatest Hits titles after selling at least 150,000 copies and being on the market for at least a year. Minimum sales required eventually rose to 250,000.

-When the program came to PlayStation 2 in 2002, games could become Greatest Hits titles after selling at least 400,000 copies and being on the market for at least 9 months.

-A PlayStation Portable title must be on the market for at least 9 months and have sold 250,000 copies or more.

-A PlayStation 3 game must be on the market for 10 months and sell at least 500,000 copies to meet the Greatest Hits criteria

Though Sony-published games are virtually guaranteed to eventually be Greatest Hits titles after they meet their sales and age marks, other companies are not required to release their titles on the Greatest Hits label even if they meet the criteria. In addition, Sony also allows other publishers some flexibility in the pricing of their own Greatest Hits titles, though most companies stick to the agreed-upon suggested retail price. Games that are multi-million sellers may become Greatest Hits titles much later than 9 months to maximize profits. It is also a common practice for a game to re-release on the Greatest Hits label at a close proximity to the release of that game’s sequel or follow-up.

did you learned something today CON???

Ico was an Instant Classic, did not sold much though, there are many original xbox games that did not sell well but you can still consider them as instant classic. so is Legend of Dragoon (PS1), Chrono Trigger (SNES) and more.

thats just a guy talking crap (just like you do all the time), when you see an “Ad”, comercial, boxart, poster from Sony stating it then you can talk

    @Roca

He probably means the whole Halo Franchise together…..

which I guess is fair to compare Killzone 2′s sales to…….*rolls eyes*

    @CON
“give me the link where Killzone has sold 2 million roca…….I dare you. Lol”

2 million was a round off. 1.87 from a cached page.. It may be more now. It certainly will be over 2 million come Xmas time.

You definitely need to work on your math. Halo3 in your eyes has sold close to 19 million.

LMAO.. I’m not going to try and defend something CON heard from “some guy in Game shop”…. It was a good try though CON!!!

  78. CON:

He was a fucking sony rep! He introduced himself as a sony rep. He wasn’t a member of the game shops staff. Last day I was in there were wii promotions with nintendo staff.

    Give it up!

As for the 10% I said “barely although I’m willing to go to about 16%. Still pathetic that you are reduced to arguing over these terrible sales figures LOL
