XBL is great but inferior to PSN when it comes to L4D DLC fiasco
When Valve revealed that the company would be releasing a DLC campaign right before the release of Left 4 Dead 2, many believed that it would be free. However, Valve has since confirmed that it will be free to only PC gamers and Xbox 360 owners will have to pay for it. Microsoft may want to rethink its strategy and make customer satisfaction a priority.
Just a few days ago I criticized Sony for ridiculously selling dynamic themes at an unbelievable price. It seems like its Microsoft’s turn to be criticized for “cock†blocking Valve from releasing the latest Left 4 Dead DLC for free. Up until recently it wasn’t clear if Microsoft was the responsible party for making Valve charge for its latest DLC.
Given Microsoft’s history with EPIC Games for Gears of War, many speculated that this was another case of Microsoft forcing developers to charge for DLC originally meant to be free. I find it truly ironic that two of Microsoft’s bread winners are Valve and EPIC Games, both having deep roots in mods and community support by giving out free content. I suppose the twist here is that Sony is the company advocating its “Play, Share, and Create†mantra for the PS3 with no price tag associated with sharing.
According to Eurogamer, Chet Faliszek from Valve indicated that the studio wanted to give the L4D DLC, Crash Course for free to everyone, but Microsoft did not want that. Valve is giving PC gamers Crash Course for free as this is what the company has done historically.
L4D gamers on the Xbox 360 will have to pay 560 MS Points ($7.00/ £4.76 / €6.72). As a L4D owner on the Xbox 360 this news has me a bit irritated. Even though I will end up getting Crash Course for free from EA, as a hardcore gamer I really can’t say that I agree with this form of discrimination.
Robin Walker, project lead for Valve made a bold statement back in 2007. According to Eurogamer in an article titled “Valve won’t charge for DLC,†Walker clearly stated, “You buy the product, you get the content.†However, It now seems like those who buy the Xbox 360 version don’t get the content.
Faliszek further stated:
We own our platform, Steam. Microsoft owns their platform. They wanted to make sure there’s an economy of value there… Well, they helped us get the first one out for free. We had the one DLC out for free. And I think… they have to look and say, wow, we’re kind of being unfair to everybody else if these guys can do that.
I am particularly interested in the last comment that implies that it would be unfair to the other studios if Valve were to have more than one free DLC out on XBL. This can only mean that other studios clearly want to release free content on the Xbox 360 but Microsoft won’t allow it.
I believe that Xbox Live is one of the greatest things to be developed in gaming history, but in some ways things like mod support and free DLC seems to be clearly inferior to the Playstation Network. Microsoft may want to look at Sony’s “Play, Create and Share†model which is far more beneficial towards gamers.

I have already made my stance on this issue pretty clear and I cannot think of any valid reason for MS charging for the content when it is released by Valve for FREE.
Penny pinching, money grab.
But people will buy it and validate MS charging it. I personally won’t be giving them a single cent they don’t deserve, particularly when it’s someone else’s content.

Hey with the newest PSP firmware 6.00 PSP owners will soon be able to download games as rentals. I wish PS3 gets it too with the next update. This can be a good must have features renting games. I don’t care if PS3 games are 50GB i can always pause and continue downloading later. They should allow the time for expiration to start when the game is fully installed ready to play.
Sony again inventing new innovations for gamers how nice of them. We also need more theme colors like PSP has.
This is useless to me since i can get anything free for my PSP but for those who don’t have a PSP with custom firmware this will be awesome to have.

Yes, that’s part of giving customers a “taste” to get started, but pretty much all PC games are deeply discounted compared to console games as well. If we want to start comparing what is available on PC compared to consoles, we pretty much pay at least $20 more at least for almost every title that is available on consoles and PC’s.

Unless I am mistaken, all these are re-vamps/HD versions of the originals available on PC. The games that are available on PC but are not what you get in the console variant. BUT, I do agree that games etc on both consoles are excessively overpriced !!!!

The best rational for higher sales are the cheaper model. I think its been long established that a game wont really be the difference maker, but a good combow with games and price will make the factor. PS3 appears to be there now.

spidey – good point. one game costs more to play online with a pc than the entire xbox catalog on xbox live.

Well, I suppose I can tone down my attack on kev. He finally apologised.
Now if he can finally remember that I do own and enjoy a 360. Yes I do have complaints about the 360 (very few, I might add) as I do have complaints about the PS3.
