Microsoft: No Xbox 720 but Natal signals new generation
The Xbox 360 began this generation of video game consoles when it was released back in November 2005. But despite being four years old, it still has a lot of life left in it. Microsoft has implied as much by stating no plans for an Xbox 720. Instead, the motion-sensing system codenamed Project Natal signals a new generation, with more reinventions to come from the existing hardware.
We’re now almost four years into this generation of video game hardware, the seventh for those keeping count. In generations past it would have been around this point that many people would have been looking at the next-generation and wondering what each console manufacturer had up their sleeve. But no longer, with this generation likely to last longer than any before it, and a decade of using the same machines not out of the question.
But during that time, the consoles are likely to be evolved. We’ve already seen the PS3 Slim effectively reinvent the Sony console. And firmware updates also have the capacity to add new features and functionality. Then there are the Sony and Microsoft attempts to steal Nintendo’s market share with motion-sensing controllers, both likely to debut in 2010.
In an interview with Develop, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Game Studios, spelled out his vision for the Xbox 360 hardware and how Natal fits in to it.
Do we need to sell a new console at some point? I don’t think we need to right now. We’ll wait until our experiences are at the right point, like we have done with the Natal camera. We’ll wait until everyone is ready for it from a software perspective.
What Don [Mattrick] was saying was that when Natal comes out it will feel like a new generation has come. I see it as like the launch of the Xbox 360 back in 2005 – there will be a launch portfolio of games to support it.
And in terms of putting more hardware on the market, what else can we do? Put more memory in it? I don’t think that’s enough. We like where we are at with the box – 360 currently has a great price point. Consumers don’t want another $400 box right now.
We effectively reinvented the Xbox once already when we rewrote the dashboard. It’s not about trying to sell consumers a new piece of hardware at the wrong time, it’s about evolving the platform continuously. And we are going to find things, like Natal, that are hardware-related to also do that.
But when Natal is added to 360, which is already an online-enabled powerful box, it starts a new generation of entertainment.
I think Spencer is correct in principle. Although I’m a sucker for new hardware I think the new approach is sensible, evolving what is already on the market rather than replacing it at the first sign of new and improved technology. In the same way that PC hardware has slowed down, meaning news systems and upgrades are much less important than they used to be, so the pace of gaming hardware has slowed down.
As for Natal being a game-changer, both literally and figuratively, I think it is. While the PS3 motion-sensing wand is also going to be big news, Natal, with its controller-less concept, potentially has the power to change the industry for good. So no wonder Microsoft is treating its launch in the same way it treats a new console launch. There is a lot riding on it after all.

Well motion sensing is crap so i don’t for neither. But hopefully it won’t suck as much. Microsoft still has to show more about Project Natal soon. Sony has been giving a lot of information about their Wand which is pretty damn cool. I like how the Wand ball changes color like the Sony Rolly. Microsoft seems to have big expectations for thing damn thing hopefully it will pay off eventually.

Funny thing is, when everyone includes an analogue stick no one cares. When everyone includes two analogue sticks, no one cares. When they keep the dpad and the analogue stick, no one cares. When everyone adds shoulder buttons, no one cares. (and I don’t know who came up with these ideas, its just an example)
All of a sudden, you make motion controller and its a pathetic rip off! Yay!

Does anyone know Natal´s release date?
I am not so sure about motion sensing, lots of people feel disenchanted about it (not my case) but I think that head tracking is a great feature to start with. Hopefully GT5 will step foward and prove this.
The only thing I don´t like is that whole “no controlers” idea. I would like to think that simple games won´t need controllers, but more complex ones will still use them.
I LOVE to hold a controller, I´ve been doing that for 23 years now… I can´t let go just like that… *snif*

yeah the game kicked ass at E3, which is rare for the type of game uncharted is. you usually see FPS, blood and Gore games (GoW), and wierd games like LBP and Fallout.

Great, I dowloaded the 3.01 update, which was supposed to fix the Unhcarted freezing problem, and now MGS4 won’t load… I was on act 5 too… aargh. Already tried the same fix I used for Uncharted, deleting the game data and reinstalling, but it doesn’t work this time. I’ll order a replacement disc from GameFly, but this one was working fine before the update.

Back to Natal. Although I don’t think it will be my thing I’m pretty sure it will take a big slice from the wii fanbase. Xbox will effectively have 2 markets using the one console. As long as they keep bringing out the great shooters I’m happy. Left4Dead 2, ODST and Modern Warfare 2 are enough to keep my happy till christmas along with forza and fifa……….so little time

Natal is a relly cool idea. I’ve no doubt it will work on some games, but I just can’t see it working on a MW2 or Uncharted type game.
As a menu driver I thought the vid MS showed showed huge potential, but potential is one thing, actually delivering a working worthwhile product is another.
There have been many technology projects which looked awesome and fun to use, but never made it to the market, or if they did bombed out big time. Lets hope Sony & MS can get both of these working properly and kick the wii to the curb.

I actually played Halo 3 last weekend at a friend’s house. The game-play has held up decent enough, but the graphics have not aged well at all.
I just kept thinking to myself “Wow! THIS is the game all of the kids like?” I just don’t get it at all. It’s an ok shooter with crappy graphics, lame lead character, and a boring story line. I guess a strong marketing campaign can convince the average consumer that anything is good.
I really wonder if ODST will even bother to try to improve the dated graphics. Probably not since they know stupid kids will whine until there parents buy it for them regardless.

aside from the guitar hero / rock band… peripherals rarely become popular. Nintendo had the right Idea making it part of the console.
The original eye toy never became too popular (prob lack of marketing) and that had similar move around type gameplay you find in wii games. I just don’t see the brightest future for nether natal or Sony’s wand.

On my old computer, I had a $30 BT reciever USB stick, and with a bit of research, found a passthrough for DirectX9 and was able to play on my computer with wireless PS3 controllers. I forgot to take it out when I sold it, and haven’t bothered to get another one, as most of my gaming on the PC works best with KBM anyhow.

@sw – it’s the “plug n charge” kit for 360 controller. You get the rechargeable battery and usb cable so you can charge and play from the 360.

In regards to the controllers, the 360 has a concave shape to it, but it’s loose and not as tight and responsive as the Dual Shock. The shape of the trigger doesn’t effect anything. I’d rather have triggers that are responsive.

The 360 controller sits fine in my hands, quite snug actually (and I love the DS3). The trigger buttons on the 360 controller seem responsive to me as well ??

Most PS games use the L1 and R1 as
“triggers” anyway.
The L2 and R2 are hardly really triggers. There is no resistence like a trigger thats available on the 360 controller. I think the way it is now is actually better for racing games. Its not a clicking trigger but an analog depressing button. IDK how to explain it. I think the ps3 controller is better for racers.
