The shady side of PS3 and Xbox 360 exclusives revealed
Dealing with exclusivity on this generation consoles can be a tricky thing. In the previous generation exclusivity did not matter much because the PS2 was clearly the dominant console. However, this generation there is two powerhouse hardcore consoles: the PS3 and Xbox 360. Often times, developers have to make shady backdoor deals with manufactures fighting over their games.
As some of you may have read already, a group of protesters in Japan calling themselves the “beta testers” made some ruckus when Namco Bandai announced that Tales of Vesperia a former Xbox 360 exclusive will be heading to the PS3. Currently, about a thousand owners have signed the petition indicating that Namco Bandai should either stop porting the game to the PS3 or exclude the extra content.
Apparently, the owners believe that they were beta testers for Microsoft and Namco Bandai and are upset because not only did they purchase an Xbox 360 to play Tales of Vesperia, they feel that they are getting the inferior version to the PS3. What further fueled this fire was the fact that one Xbox 360 owner while browsing through the code found traces of the extra content within the game. Apparently, the likely scenario seems to be that Namco Bandai ran out of time to finish adding the extra content.
According to Sanaku Complex, a developer for Namco Bandai posted a detailed explanation of what happened in response to the public outcry. The developer confirms that Microsoft paid a hefty sum of money to retain Tales of Vesperia as an exclusive for a year on the Xbox 360 and to cover much of the development cost.
Apparently, the studio felt that this was the best move despite the fact that the game would not sell well in Japan. This was decided with the thought of porting the game over to the PS3 at a later time which they knew would sell well in Japan. Also, the developers at Namco Bandai felt that developing on the PS3 would be costly and difficult when compared to the Xbox 360. The process of developing cheaply on the Xbox 360 and porting the game over to the PS3 made sense to the studio cost-wise at the time.
Sony then told Namco Bandai, “not so fast” when the studio approached SCE to port the code over to the PS3. Apparently, the folks at Sony indicated that they would not allow Tales of Vesperia to be on the PS3 without a significant amount of additional content considering the late release.
Exclusive deals aren’t uncommon this generation. Although it looks like exclusive deals may in fact be dying out now. However, it seems likely previous exclusive games such as Bioshock, Eternal Sonata played out similarly behind closed doors. I suppose even the recently revealed PS3 port of Star Ocean International will be a similar case. I understand why many gamers may feel burned by these shady back door deals but I think there is a silver lining in the sky.
The way I look at it everyone wins to some extent – Xbox 360 owners got to play Tales of Vesperia very early on, PS3 owners get extra stuff, Microsoft had another exclusive game to brag about, Namco Bandai got Microsoft to pay for development, and Sony finally got Tales of Vesperia. So who really loses here?

It happens with lots of games, and with the economic ‘crisis’ the way that it is, developers re well within their rights to try and expose their product to the biggest market possible. Makes good business sense. People just need to get over it.

Wow Microsoft another lost of exclusive. Sony might get some exclusive late but we always get extra content which is worth the way and all glitches are fixed. I like how Sony told them we want a better deal. Those idiot boycotting Namco Bandai should buy a PS3 or just STFU already.
Tales of Vesperia was actually a good game for Xbox 360. And this just business.

I can understand that they are pretty pissed that they were told the game was an exclusive only to find out that that was not the case, but to insist that it isn’t ported to the PS3 is ridiculous and petty. They would have a much better case if they petitioned for the extra stuff to be made available as free download for the 360 instead. Be happy that your game is increasing it’s install base, that way there is a much greater chance that it will be continued as sequels or expansions. Wit the way the HD gaming market is so evenly split there is no real advantage to release a game exclusively for a single platform any more. All you end up doing is halving your potential sales. Epic could make at least another 3 million in sales if they released GoW on the PS3, and Killzone 2 would double it’s install base overnight if they released it on the 360.

You are correct Killzone 2 on Xbox 360 will outsell any game in history it will be epic in sales. But Sony cannot allow that to happen even if it can benefit them on the eyes of consumer it will look like big blow to Sony. Those people bitching won’t get anywhere. For the most part I agree. You just shouldn’t mix up first party studios with third. The day of third party exclusives looks to be at an end. Theres really fewer and fewer. If they do exist, you can almost guarantee some under the table money changed hands.
Sony is as guilty as MS in this now. I mean sure….MS seemed to have started the timed exclusives and extra DLC this gen but Sony seems to be stepping it up.
Any word on Quantum for the 360…. yet???
and I really doublt FF14 will stay exclusive. Especially since FF11 is on the 360, it would seem asinine to abandon that established mmo audience.

I said that its M$’s because they be signing checks left and right for “time exclusive” or for a PS3 exclusve to come to the 360 (ex FFXIII, MGS:R, Tekken 6)
while on the other hand Sony does not pay for exclusive, thats up to the developers/publisher make the desicion (even though Sony offers lower dev cost for PS3 exclusive). Look at the Ninja Gaiden Series… the fact that PS3 is getting the Better verison is M$’s fault.
Sony didnt have to have to make checks for FFv13, Quantum, L.A Noire, Agent, Demon’s Souls, 3D dot Heroes, Katamari Forever, SuperCar Challenge, WKC (even though Level-5 contually keeps making games for Nintendo).
They way I see Sony stepping up their game is by just not letting publisher port the game over exactly as it was for the 360, instead Sony demands extra contents (Bioshock DLC, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Visperia, Star Ocean, Lost Planet, Ninja Gaiden, Castle Crasher and more)
Good move on Sony, it’s making M$’s move backfiring right back at them

Timed exclusivity is the number one worst trend this gen. It’s basically just lying to your fan base. It’s the equivalent to giving gamers (fanbase & nonfanbase) the middle finger.

Sony gets free exclusives while Microsoft has to pay LoL. I highly doubt FFXIV will come to Xbox 360 anytime. But Sony has so many exclusives that it doesn’t matter anymore. If the PS3 price wouldn’t had been that high maybe $400 when launched it would had sold about 50 millions by now. Microsoft will fail at the end like always. They are just too damn greedy. Sony actually cares for gaming.

Same thing happened with Metal Gear Rising for the 360.
I’d also wager that MS wanted to make MGR and timed exclusive as well, but it wasn’t worth the loss of sales and the loss of dignity if they did.

Not only that, but since the game was out on the 360 first, it almost drops it’s price instantly. I bought Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and Bioshock for all under $30. In fact Bioshock was $30 and I had an additional $10 off from 2k games coupon.

Agent is apparently going to follow in the footsteps of GTA for PS2…if it’s a huge success, the PS3 will get the sequels first, and 360 a year later. If it flops, well…
I still think Sony should have leveraged future GTA exclusiveness instead of making R* make a new game…though who knows, maybe MS have already tied up some future GTA deals…

Well Tretton said R* wanted to release the 360 version at the same time as the PS3 version, probably because of development costs, and it’s pretty much accepted that Agent is the result of Sony letting them out of it.
But yeah, I’d have tried to leverage future GTA exclusiveness like they did on PS2, but then who knows what MS and R* signed when they came to that “strategic alliance” in 2006…MS could have already have R* in a contract to release future GTA’s day and date with PS3.
It probably won’t stop either Sony or MS trying to get something…anything… exclusive from GTA5 though

Usually the publisher pays for the advert. It’s one of the responsibilities of the publisher. If MS was the publisher of any of the games I’d agree. If MS was the publisher for their version and Sony was publishing their own..I agree.
The way it looks as it is now, MS throws them some extra cash to advertise a non exclusive game to attain the perspective that it is an exclusive (to dumb ppl).
Is MS maying to do this yes. It’s also got to be a butt load cheaper than publishing or paying for a timed exclusive.
I’m saying….. I don’t like the practice.

Hey PS3 owners how that hell can i deactivate another PS3? If i gave it away i tried going under account management but that was useless. I don’t really know what PS3 i need to deactivate there’s two besides the one I’m using now. I just got a free PSN voucher code for the pilot episode of The Vampire Diaries from CW in SD to OWN i already saw the episode on my PC but i want the one Sony gave me. I hate the sharing PS3 feature now is annoying.

your “Ivan-” accont is under 4 PS3s (5 is the limiy)
-2 PS3 you currently have (60GB and 80GB)
-your cousins PS3
-and the PS3 you gave away
so far I only see you account being active on 4 system which shouldnt be a problem for you. are you forgetting a system somewhere? did you ever buy a PS3 and returned it by any chance?
To deactivate your “online account” from a PS3 system you must:
- Log into your “online account”
- Go to “account managment”
- click on “Deactivate System”
- and choose both option “game & video” to deactivate it completely
- then delete your “system account” (if you want to, or leave it there for later)
***You must have internet access to do this***
***You “cant” deactive multiple PS3’s from a single PS3, you must the above steps to each induvidual system that have had or have your “Online account” active***
I see two problems….
-you online account on the PS3 with no internet access “can not” deativate unless it gets internet access somehow
-if you have ever return/sold a PS3 console without deactivating you “online account”, then you are screw, which means your activate limit is 4 instead of 5 now (you will never be able to get you online account to be active on 5 console at the same time unless you get those back and deactivate them)

@ phranctoast it’s the same marketing philosophy Intel employ. They do very little of their own advertising, instead they pay others to tag the intel chime to the end of their commercial. These game commercials never actually make any reference to exclusivity, they just don’t mention any other manufacturer. Sneaky, but a rather moral grey area.

idk what the issue is, but deactivation an account wont make you lose access to the account and wont affect your trophies. you will be still be able to do everything (play games, play online games, go to Home, visit the Store) but you wont be able to purchase anything out of the PS store, and all of your downloadable games will be unplayable until you activate your account back…remember you can activate and deactivate an online account as many time as you want.

MS has a pretty impressive list for TGS, though it looks like their streak of getting solid exclusive RPG’s is coming to an end.
But to me, it’s puzzling why MS aren’t showing FFXIII at TGS…TGS is still one the worlds largest trade shows, and even though they don’t have FFXIII in Japan, it’s a pretty big game to leave off the list.

I mean….To enjoy Uncharted, you pretty much had to have a ps3. To enjoy Modern Warfare you pretty much had to have a ps3 or 360.

Not sure if GT5p was a bundle. I don’t recall it in the US, and I don’t live in the EU.
The only non exclusive I recall bundled was GTA4. And IMO that is a good exclusive to bundle and it supports the point I made before.

Resident Evil 5 passes my test though, as it is the first “Next gen” resident Evil game.
The Fable Gears 2 bundle looks to be the best one they have.

“I had SUPER high expectations coming into Halo 3: ODST, and unfortunately, I was let down. The game was nowhere near as good as I expected. Again, I would’ve left it as an expansion and not have charged $60 for it. But we all know that Microsoft has a tendency on charging 360 gamers for everything that they can possibly charge us for. But all in all, it’s not a terrible game, but it’s just not worth the $60 price tag that it carries.”

“There are glitches everywhere in Halo 3: ODST. I noticed a lot of glitches when sniping and when walking around with a squad mate. When sniping, a lot of the time, the bullet wouldn’t do anything to my unfortunate target. And I know I wasn’t missing, because a lot of the time my enemy wouldn’t be moving, and I’m not one to miss a standing target..and as for when walking with a squad mate, I noticed it mainly on the second to last level in campaign, but I’d be walking with someone, and then all of a sudden they’d be in a part of the level that I hadn’t even gotten to yet. And it’s not like it happened only a few times, but it happened often”

Got it. Any bad news about the ps3 is a result of smear campaigns. Bad news about the 360 is not. I love being reminded of just how foolish the ps3 fan base is. Thanks.

If you read the article, sony even admitted to having hardware problems but refused to offer any numbers for fear of appearing non-competitive. Yet here you are, saying the ps3 is perfect, without problems, and the hundreds of instances are merely a well coordinated smear campaign.

Smear campaign was a joke, as this is more than likely sensationalized journalism to attract viewers.
It really doesn’t help having someone with so biased against the ps3 to be the specialist. Once you read that I was correct I expect an apology.
Oh btw… No one said the ps3 was “perfect”. That’s simply more instances of you putting words in my mouth. You seem to be doing that a lot lately, so I’ll point it out each time. I do not believe that there is a common manufacturers flaw inherent in the ps3. That I think is Bullshit. a failure rate (Ylod) of <.5% is not news worthy what ever way you look at it. Don’t expect Blorge to be dumb enough to glorify the news sensationalism. Nothings perfect. Electronics fail sometimes, its just the amount of times that instanced like this happen is the real concern.
