Sales analysis: PS3 sales breakdown needed to sell 10.5 million units
Sony boldly claimed a target of 13 million PS3s to be sold by the end of 2009 fiscal year. Many were skeptical that Sony could meet this target with the overall sales slump in the video game sector along with the slowing PS3 sales. With a price cut and PS3 Slim later, things are starting to look great for Sony. However, is it enough or a little too late to still meet the target?
Before Sony’s big announcements at Gamescom, I did find it odd that Sony maintained the 13 million target despite slowing sales and with only an estimated 2.5 million PS3s sold. It meant that Sony would have to sell 10.5 million units by March of 2010, which is the last month of the fiscal year, for the company to meet its 13 million target.
However, with the price cut and PS3 Slim announcement, it is now understandable why Sony was so adamant on its 13 million target. I have to say that the PS3 Slim is selling phenomenally, but I do have my doubts that Sony will able to move 10.5 million units by March.
So I decided to break it down by what Sony would need to achieve in order to meet this target -
Stats:
2.5 million – Approximate PS3s sold to date in 2009
10.5 million – Needed in order to meet 13 million target
Target Criteria:
1) Sony needs to sell 5.5 million PS3s this holiday – Sony sold 4.5 million PS3s in 2008 during Q3, which is the holiday season. The company would need to move 1 million units more this year (5.5 million), in order to partially achieve target sales.
2) Final Fantasy XIII PS3 Bundle needs to move 2 million PS3s in Japan –This is a topic of much contention as analysts are curious as to the impact FFXIII PS3 bundle will make in Japan. Sony will need to sell at least 2 million PS3s in Japan as a result of this game.
3) Sony needs to sell 2 million Q4 (Jan – March) – Sony sold 1.6 million PS3s in Q4 last year. The company would need to move 400k more PS3s than last year in order to partially meet target sales.
4) PS3 Slim/Price cut needs to spur 1 million sales surplus – Sony needs to sell 1 million PS3s minimum extra, as a direct result of the price cut and Slim introduction.
If Sony is able to meet all of the criteria list above then the company has a very good shot of meeting its 13 million target goal. However, many factors such as FFXIII moving 2 million PS3s in Japan and Sony selling slightly more units during holiday season despite a recession may make it difficult for the company to meet its target.
A target of 13 million PS3s sold for the year is an ambitious task especially during this recession. Last year Sony and Microsoft managed to sell exactly the same number of PS3s and Xbox 360s, which were 10.7 million units each. Ultimately, for Sony to meet its target the company would need to sell a lot more than last year.

6.1 mil in sales for Q3 and Q4 combined last year, and only 2.5 mil sold so far this year… so they would have to sell amost twice as much in the same period of time to reach their target? Sorry, sales will improve due to the slim, price drop, and several great games being released, but this is a stretch (maybe intentional?). Just curious Mike, but what happens if they don’t meet their target (I really don’t know)?

They may well grab all of the fence sitters that were waiting for a drop, plus any 360 owners who want to own both systems. I can’t see them selling as much as predicted, but they’ll still sell a lot. In my opinion they released the slim at the right time, 4 months before christmas. That way it is on the market for 3 months before that big Thanksgiving sale that you guys have, so it would have some recognition.
Either way, the price drop has made the NPD data guaranteed to not be so predictable anymore.

well so far they have been averaging roughly 8-10 million a year, so with the current price cut it may just be possible, but they would have to exceptionally well, and hope that MS don’t release something unusual until Natal that might steal some of Sony’s wind.

I don’t think I ever said that I don’t care about sales, as part of my job I have to report such information.
However, I did question gamers that bicker about sales – what does sales have anything to do with you?
Sales discussions are interesting to have, but when I see gamers bicker about it like it means so much to them, I pose that question – how does sales effect you in any way?
Sales should be a footnote to gamers and the games should be the meat of any gamer’s passion, not the other way around. However, too often I see people on here starting straw man arguments about sales (your not one of them) and I have yet to really see them talk about games, which makes me wonder if they are real gamers or posers just trolling around to start arguments because they like the excitement of arguing.
Just a thought.

Yes, Sony has their work cut out for them. Keep in mind Q2 is not over officially until the last day of this month.
So far on the books Sony sold 1.1 million PS3s Q1 2009 compared to 1.6 million Q1 2008. Q2 is a big question mark and the 2.5 million est. came out before August which is more like Q1+ (half of Q2).
As to the question what happens if Sony doesn’t meet target – It affects shareholder’s outlook on shares. But what companies usually do if it looks like sales won’t meet target is re-adjust sales forecast by lowering it so that it meets target. There are also other considerations such as how much was sold last year vs this year with recession as a factor. So, its not a clear cut thing but if Sony is able to meet original forecast target then thats a big bragging right basically.

I think as Mike says…it’s pretty irrelavant…if they see they won’t make it, they’ll just revise the forecast down.
I seem to remember up to Decmeber 2008, Sony were still forecasting a $2 billion profit, only to days later revise it to a $2 billion loss.
Does anyone know what MS are forecasting for the 360? Aren’t Nintendo still forecasting something like 18 million Wii sales…which is just fucking insane.

Excellent choice and wise decision. I’ve already bought Batman and played through it (though have yet to beat the extreme challenge modes for Shock and Awe and Sewer Bat, plus hard difficulty, I like taking it out between rentals to savor it), now just renting Ultimate Alliance 2.
Demon Souls is next up for me as well, and already in the queue, but Uncharted 2 is coming out 5 days later so I will have to put it down for awhile. I don’t think I’ll play through NGS2 though, as I already played Ninja Gaiden 2 last year before I left for Iraq, and this doesn’t look to add to much I would actually care about:

100% correct Barnabe. It will be rather big in the western world too, that’s if the Australian Govt don’t ban it like they did with Left For Dead 2. That pisses me off, there is one politician in South Australia who is blocking the bill for allowing R rated games. So basically 22 million people are missing out of the opportunity to play the game because of one ‘please won’t someone think of the children’ douchebag.

Yes, it sucks more than anything else has sucked before. I guess I could import it from Playasia, however I have a feeling that they’ll have some sort of mechanism that recognises Aussie ip addresses and block you from playing online.
The case for R rated classifications for games in Aus has garnered a lot of support in recent months, and it would have been passed if it weren’t for this douchebag who won’t budge. It was because of him that i didn’t get to see Niko Belic receiving a hand shandy.

Yes, about 75% of games I see on Playasia are region free on 360, so hopefully this will be one of them.
Rated M games are allowed here, but some of the more violent games have trouble getting through. The problem is consistency though. For example, Prototype lets you pick someone up and throw them against building walls, blood flying everywhere and whatever is left of the body bouncing down the street, and that was passed. L4D2 has the option of beating the shit out of a zombie with a cricket bat, and it’s banned.

Not a big deal, they will find a home elsewhere if need be, just look at how Crytek had to move its studio in Iceland, due to the city being unable to supply them with enough electricity to run their processing farms. It won’t really hurt the companies in the long term, but while still climbing out of a global recession, many countries can’t afford to lose multi-million dollar companies taxes and employment.

Anyway, back OT, anyone with an ear to the ground knows the ps3 will come in last again this holiday. they have very little to offer that the competition doesn’t do better for cheaper.
the price drop will help, but unfortunately, as most gaming professionals know, it’s too-little-too-late.
with bluray players reaching the <$100 mark for the holidays, the ps3 just lost that marketing angle as well.
the sony fanboys will rage and spew nonsense about how people are just waiting to buy a ps3. however, that has been said since before the launch and it still hasn’t happened, so this looks to be no different.
i think sony sees this as well, as their overall outlook for themselves isn’t very strong….
they have several more years to spur sales, but until they hit the $199 price point, noone sees them trumping the competition.

I think it would be better to try to predict the behavior of the market with the NPD results in the mid of october. Those will represent an almost perfect sample for these holydays.
Mmm, I´m not so sure about a $50 price cut from the Wii… it looks shaby in comparison and it will make future price cuts look less impressive. I would have waited some more.

Roca, I would agree, except Microsoft has never been on top or even close in the game console world, as opposed to Sony who ruled the roost for the better part of a decade. Basically this gen has been the most successful one they have seen, albeit out of two and with significant initial hardware problems. Carlb: Most of you post in the past few months have been Sony bashing. I have not had any problems with my PS3 freezing. There is a 3.0.1 (or so) update, try that.
I will be buying a Slim early next month. I’ll let you know if I have issues with it.

Hey, lay off CarlB… no one gave me shit for airing my problems with 3.0 (which broke my PS3 as far as being usable at all, not just an inconvenience). Sure I was able to fix it myself, with a couple hours of console recovery functioning, but it was still shitty, and made me very irate. I was trying to sell the BC model I have at the time to get a smaller, cooler, more efficient Slim, and had to cancel the offers I had until I knew for sure if my PS3 was borked (wouldn’t sell a broken PS3 to my worst enemy
).
Probably a good thing, as my SSD is apparently troublesome with the slim. Will wait for a firmware update (supposed to be coming in a few weeks) and hope it fixes it, or I will just sit on my fatty.

Sorry, didn’t mean to get you so upset, I just saw Afrika was on your list (above) of “the greatest most advanced exclsuives” so I thought you had already played it or were going to (never said you were going to “buy” it, just to let us know how it turns out). You are going to play it, right? Or do you just like putting random PS3 games on lists? Are you really on your second PS3 and 5th PSP (you mentioned this in other threads)? What happened?

It was a problem I personally had with the PS3 that (it seems according to the coverage on other sites) more than a few others had as well, so I thought I might mention it. Good to know you didn’t have the same problem.
In any case, I fixed it by uninstalling the game data and reinstalling it before the 3.0 update (I guess you missed where I posted that). Sorry if you thought that was “bashing”. I already installed the 3.01 update which was said to fix that problem (after I had already fixed the problem with 3.00), then had troubles with MGS4. I looked at the disc, noticed it was beat up, turned it back in for a replacement and it worked fine.
Thanks Jofa, good to know I wasn’t alone there.

…but we both know it boils down to what the individual gamer likes/dislikes regardless of reviews. It looks to be a “zen” type of atmospheric game, and an import only title right now, but if you get to play it, let us know how it turns out and what you think of it.

Afrika would have been a much better game if they took out the whole ‘Safari’ scenario and replaced it with a ‘Peeping Tom’ scenario. I would pay for a game where you walk around, find a good tree to climb and take photos of people in their underpants standing next to their bedroom window.

Afrika is what it is. I wonder how the environments will be in comparison to Far Cry 2. That game really made Africa look great. Still one of the more visually impressive games this gen. It’s a shame about its shortcoming.

Roca, yes I played through all of God of War I and loved it, unfortunately only part of God of War II (when I was on ship). Even if I played through both completely I would still highly look forward to God of War Collection for the updated graphics and trophies.

ncaissie, you’re right. I showed my “true colours” when I said I liked Uncharted and was looking forward to Sony’s lineup of games this holiday season more than anybody else’s. Glad you recognize that and the other 100 plus posts where I have said favorable things about PS3 in the past (even before I owned one). If there was more comments of that ilk for 360 in the past, it is simply because I didn’t own a PS3 until last month.
