TGS 2009: Day 1 complete PS3 and Xbox 360 news roundup
The Tokyo Game Show is finally underway. It feels like TGS will not have any bombshell announcements but there still seems to be a good amount of small chunks of news to come out of the show. Overall a steady stream of bite-sized announcements has already been announced day one of the show.
I suspect that there won’t be ground breaking announcements made at the TGS event coming off the big announcements made at E3 and Gamescom. However, there seems to be a lot more bite-sized announcements being made throughout the course of the event.
Instead of letting our readers run around like a ‘mad man’ trying to find the juiciest bits of news, I have tried to compile all of the interesting announcements here. I know there are some that I might have missed, but I will try to get to them later along with future announcements.
Sony Keynote:
Last year Microsoft kicked off TGS with a keynote speech, and it seems its Sony’s turn to have a speech to kick start the event this year. Kaz Hari, big boss man of SCE took the stage and talked about the company’s goals. One interesting bit of news to come out of the speech is the official reveal of the motion wand control. There is also a strong emphasis on 3D gaming. Also, apparently Sony sold 1 million PS3 Slims in three weeks.
Alan Wake:
Microsoft showed off some new footage of Alan Wake. Unlike previous footage this one shows the ‘flight’ element of the game. There will be parts in the game where Alan will not have his trusty flashlight or gun and must run away into the dark woods eluding capture. I’m looking forward to seeing some straight gameplay footage for this game.
PS3 exclusive action-RPG: Trinity Souls of Zill O’ll:
Koei showed off one of their new titles at the show. Apparently, Trinity Souls of Zill O’ll (what?) is an action-RPG cellshaded game exclusively developed for the PS3. The game will allow you to control three characters switching off between them. The action is all real-time and the environment is also dynamic. It seems that new paths can be created by destroying a blockage like a tree or freezing a lake and walking over it.

GT 5 March 2010 release:
I think this is one of the most asked questions from PS3 owners. Sony has finally given an official release date of Gran Turismo 5 and its March 2010. That dashes any hopes of head to head competition with Forza 3 and GT5 this holiday. It is still not clear if the March date is worldwide or Japan only. The speculation of a GT5 PS3 bundle has not been confirmed yet as well.
250GB FFXIII White PS3 bundle:
There may not be a GT5 PS3 Bundle confirmation, but Sony did reveal a special edition 250GB Final Fantasy XIII White PS3 Slim bundle. I have to say the white PS3 Slim with a FFXIII design looks pretty hwat. This announcement has only fueled my question of whether or not if Sony can shift 2 million PS3 Slims from FFXIII alone in Japan.
God of War Collection includes GOW III E3 Demo
Want another incentive to buy God of War Collection? How about a demo of GOW III on the same blu-ray disc? Sounds like a great deal to me as you will be able to get a taste of GOW III several months before its release. The only caveat is that its the demo from E3 meaning its an older build. However, I doubt anyone will be complaining.
Get Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker demo now
What’s the next best demo you can get besides GOW III? Its the Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker demo for the PSP of course. Konami has graciously handed out the demo file to TGS attendees and are now available for download. You can download the file from IGN here. (PSA – For those with hacked PSPs, the demo is good enough to upgrade to the latest firmware now. Its time to grow up and support the developers guys.)
PSP Playstation Room (Home like) Coming
Here is another reason to legitimately upgrade to the latest firmware – PSP Room and possibly friends list. The Playstation Room is a personalized space on the PSP where users can create their own custom 3D avatars and room space. Apparently, “my room” will have features such as blog access, album sharing, and group gathering with chat support. It sounds like the PSP will finally get a friends list as well.
Motion controls PS3 – RE5 directors cut (extras Jill control), LBP
During Sony’s second speech, or first press conference (whichever way you want to look at it), the company demonstrated the first game to utilize its motion controller waggle wand. The company showed off what looks like a near final version of the device. It looks good, except for the fact its shaped like an obscene object with a light bulb on the end.
Sony had the mastermind behind Resident Evil 5, and Lost Planet 2, Jun Takeuchi demonstrate the motion controller for RE5: Director’s Cut. It looks like the director’s cut for the PS3 will completely customized for use with the motion controller. The gameplay implementation looks extremely similar to Resident Evil 4 Wii edition, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Clues from the conference indicate that the director’s cut will have some extra content as well such as Jill being a new playable character in some form.
Natal Partners, and Kojima Likes it a lot:
To round out today’s story – Microsoft announced that Natal has full backing from the majority of the publishers out there. Around 12 publishers have signed on to implement Natal in some shape or form in the future. Also, Microsoft held an event where three developers including famed Hideo Kojima took the stage to talk about Natal. Kojima expressed interest in Natal and talked about its application to gaming. I suppose if the brilliant Kojima likes Natal it can’t be that bad.
Make sure to stay tuned for more announcements and new coming out of the TGS in the coming days. Microsoft indicated that some new games will be announced, so hopefully I can bring some more information on these titles plus more information on the actual games from the various publishers at the show.

I think it’s a bad move for Sony not releasing GT5 before xmas, especially without a bundle here in Europe. I just hope they market the hell out of it here.

I made the mistake of starting out playing on “hardcore”. It’s not too bad, but I might have to start over just so I can fly through the game quicker.

That was my thinking too but reality is that I have never played Gears since Gears 2 and I even found Halo 2 on my shelf this morning, I forgot I even owned that game. I find that once you move on, that is just it, you move on. I have always wondered why people want BC for the PS3 when most likely you won’t play your old games especially if there is a sequal already on the new system. I now say trade it in and get the value out of it before it becomes a $5 might as well keep it trade in. That rings especially true for sports games.

I always felt the same way. Maybe in the beginning of the ps3’s lifetime when there wasn’t an abundance of great games and awesome ps2 games were still being released for it (GOW2), but now…it seems like a moot point.

I want BC becuse I never had a chance with a PS2. I had Xbox 1s. And I would like to play some of the games not all. Like Sly cooper I had it for a short time and never realy had a chance to play it through. But If the remake it with better graphics as well as God of War 1-2 then I’ll be happy and say I don’t need BC. Those are the three games I REALY want to play and does not justify purchasing a PS2. But that said playing the ratchet and clank games would be nice if it’s BC and cheap to buy. I wont buy them at $15-$20 on PSN.

I haven’t turned my PS3 on to play a game in a week.
Watched Taken with the lady last night, but that was the extent of “ps3 time” I got in.
I’ve got the Yankees/Red Sox game to go to tonight. Saturday I’m going into the city with a friend from Texas because he was never there, followed by two birthday parties (How does everyone turn 30 so close together!). Sunday is the Jets game at a friends, and then I’ll go home. After all that I will check out U2 demo and Lost Planet 2 demo. Then….. Dexter!

You know… I had to log back into my computer and go check out the thread at IGN about Peace Walker. I couldn’t figure out how to crawl. After reading through the thread… it looks like no one else has figured it out either. Maybe there isn’t a crawl? Weird.
Asides from the lack of a crawl the controls are pretty self explanatory:
Analog Stick – Move Snake
D-Pad Down – Toggle between kneel and stand, hold to lie down (but not to crawl?)
D-Pad Up – Multi-Use Action Button. Stealth button for hugging walls.

Spent two weeks saying what, Roca? How I thought Uncharted and worth the play through despite the problems I had? That I was looking forward to God of War Collection, God of War 3, getting a PS3, the price drop, Uncharted 2, etc? You can’t take 2-4 sentences mentioning a valid freezing issue and how I honestly did not enjoy MGS4 and liked MGS better out of context from where I said in the exact same place how I fixed it and it wasn’t a big deal, and why I actually did not like MGS4 from the 100 plus comments I have actually made praising PS3 even before I even had one and say “fanboy” or “Xbot”… no need to stress it.

MGS Peace Walker is really good. The lack of crawl makes things harder since walking while crouched makes noise. It takes some adjusting to get use to it, but it’s really not such a big deal.

Con, I think it’s safe to say that the Halo series has a much larger following and better history than Killzone ever did, much like Gran Turismo when compared to Forza, so yes, it’s bound to get more sales. That said, they both seem to be very well reviewed games and worth playing, regardless of sales.

Actually, one seems to be getting much better reviews than the other across the board… interesting. But you know, Ivan and Roca will be the first to say that doesn’t matter because of the reviews that Dissidia and GTPSP received. Frankly, I agree, at least if you are a fan of the genre/series, as long as it gets generally favorable reviews it’s usually worth a play through, even if it hasn’t done as well as it’s predecessor’s.

Roca, chill… and please read what I said again more closely: “because of the reviews that Dissidia and GTPSP received.” They both received favorable reviews, and both KZ2 and ODST have received favorable reviews. A game could be rated 75 and still be considered to have favorable reviews across the board. Lower rated games can still be enjoyed more or just as much as higher ones, we agreed it is based upon the opinion of the individual gamer.
Like I said before, you are putting words in my mouth as I never said I enjoyed blue dragon (only that I purchased it for $9.99) or Marvel UA2 (only that the graphics sucked and I had been playing it for hours), and I have never mentioned anything ever about Last Remnant. Don’t become like Ivan now. Selective reading still and imagining things.

Frame of reference for the sake of the conversation roca, I was talking in the context of generally favorably reviewed games, which all of these are.
FTR, Blue Dragon (79) and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (76) both received scores “close to 80″, i.e. generally favorable reviews, as did Heavenly Sword (79), Folklore (76), Noby Noby Boy (76). The bottom line is gamers will have fun with games even if they receive less than favorable reviews. And gamers will hate top rated games as well. Ultimately it’s up to the individual’s experience.

They should take damage modeling up a level on Forza 3 (demo). I smoked my Porsche into a wall at 100mph yesterday and I drove away from that
(For playability I can understand why I DID drive away from it!)
Still, I have to say the game ran incredibly smooth and was fun to play. I still won’t buy either because I don’t do well with sim type racers as I suck at them.

Even when I rolled my car I could still drive off. Must be because it’s the demo. I remember the demo for Forza 2 being similar.
As for carl, if he addresses me I’ll tell him where to go. I’ve told him in the past to shut the fuck up when in every post he tried to hijack it with his iraq war bullshit. Even Dave and Mike had to remind him it was a games forum on different occasions. Thankfully he’s stopped…no doubt cus there’s nothing to boast about.
I told him back then to never engage because I simply don’t want to waste my time on him. I’ve asked him several times on this thread also yet he’s pathetic enough to keep it up.

Beyond Mike and Dave realizing you were getting out of hand, even the publisher of the site recognized it, then finally SW called you out on just wanting to be a troll, and I never really heard anything from you again until now. Most of your insulting posts had been deleted from the that thread and various others following it, so I had assumed you had gained some civility and grown up a little bit.
In any case, I never “boasted” (Marines don’t need to), I only mentioned I was in Iraq and answered a few of my fellow readers questions about Iraq.

You are correct, this is the gaming section, and we were talking about games here before you started trolling. Did I even mention anything about the war here? No.
If you have a problem with me then leave the site and don’t come back because I’m not going anywhere and I’m fairly sure no one here will miss you. But if you stay and say something about games or myself, then I’ll address that, as I have the right to.

I agree completely. So what have you been playing lately? I know it’s “old” news, but I just started up Infamous while waiting for Demon Souls and Uncharted 2 next month. The controls were a bit awkward at first until I adjusted it from “inverted” in the options, now I can’t help but notice how smooth the gameplay is and how great the exploration factor is. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 was a fairly bad experience overall, though somewhat fun to play for a few hours.

I’m actually doing my third play through of Infamous on the side along with some other games. This time actually doing the side missions to take control of each territory so I can get the trophies.
Also doing the stunts as well.. there are some tricky stunts – air sticky bomb, mid-air shock then thunder drop, and crowd control..
I think I’ve said this before – I really like the cover system in the game. I like how you can hang from a sign or a wall and shoot over it and get that vertical advantage. Also, the fact that you can hit circle behind any object and take cover is also great.
Love all the free stuff for Batman AA as well… Review incoming.

I noticed Sony is definitely supporting Batman more when it comes to free DLC, wise decision on their part. Personally, I usually move on to the next game after completing all trophies/achievements and don’t look back, even when I own the title, but this is one I can see going back to.
Infamous… I really like all the movements/options that cole has, and how realistic the parkour was presented… let alone how fast the pacing can be. Infamous 2?

infamous 2? it is definitely coming, once you beat the game you will understand why. a movie is also in the work (super hero movies are always good)
I recommend you to play the evil campaign also, you can put it on easy and rush through it with out doing any of the sidequest.

Do you have to have them new? If not, you can buy them discounted from GameFly and they send you the case and instructions in very nice condition. Of course, Gamestop has a great deal as well… buying used games then returning them in 7 days if you don’t like them.
