After LittleBigPlanet & Killzone 2, will Uncharted 2 fail to deliver for the PS3?
As any regular readers will know, I’m a big fan of the PS3. It has some cracking games available for it, many of which are exclusive to the Sony console. However, almost without exception, the big titles that were meant to sell by the bucketload and to sell the console have failed to deliver. After the disappointment of both LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2, can Uncharted 2 finally manage to do what it’s being hyped to do?
The Playstation 3 is a great console. It was lumbered with poor launch titles and a hefty price tag, which meant it got off to a slow start. But things have improved ever since, especially in terms of the games. Unfortunately, even the biggest exclusive titles have failed to really sell in the numbers that were expected and arguably deserved.
I’m thinking first of LittleBigPlanet. Here is a game that couldn’t fail to delight anyone who played it, and the review scores proved this was generally the case. It was one of the best games released in 2008 and yet it failed to really sell in the quantities Sony would have liked it to. Also, maybe even more importantly, it failed to sell the console.
Then there was Killzone 2. Here is a first-person shooter, a genre always guaranteed to invoke interest and a considerable amount of publicity. And so it proved, much of which was positive to the point of hyperbole. And yet Killzone 2’s sales fell off rather sharply after the initial rush to buy. And again, crucially, the game failed to sell the console.
And so we come to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. This is the latest PS3 exclusive to have been hyped as the game which will sell to everyone and finally persuade people that the PS3 is a console worth owning, even if they already have an Xbox 360.
The game looks absolutely fantastic, and the reviews which are still coming in thick and fast show that the title, despite a few minor flaws, is even blowing the minds of hardened reviewers. But is that going to be enough to make people dip their hand in their pocket and buy the game, and possibly a PS3 to go with it? Especially in the middle of a recession and with a host of other great titles also releasing this side of Christmas.
I’m not convinced. I think we’ll have to wait until Gran Turismo 5 comes along until the PS3 gets a true system seller.

It won’t be as much of an effect as, lets say, MGS4 was, and GOW3 and GT5 will be, but it won’t fail to sell as much as LBP and KZ2. Everybody complains that LBP is for little kids, and that the first KZ sucked, but this has a good history and it catches the eye.
This game really helps the PS3 in 2009. It’s line-up blew the 360 and Wii out of the water, and plenty of people are noticing it, along with the Slim. If it fails to deliver in sales, it won’t fail to deliver in quality. GOTY material right here, and probably the best sequel I’ve ever seen, compared to the original. Can’t wait. But it is GT5 and GOW3 that will really bring up the PS3.

As long as Uncharted has co-op throughout the whole campaign like GOW or Halo, I see no reason uncharted can be a system seller. I enjoyed calling friend over and just goes through the whole game story together. Resident evil 5 is excellent game although it’s multi platform.

You’re right Dave, LBP and KZ2 were very good games (they’re both in my collection), but even if the games are the best on the planet, without an appropriately priced console they’re just not going to move.
Those of us already with PS3 probably purchased those games, and probably will with UC2 because we know it will be a great game, and now that the slim is here at a cheaper price maybe it will sell a few as people look at the games to go with it.

In my Opinion, “Console sellers” are games that are new to the next gen consoles (this gen) and had a strong following on the previous gen. GTA4, RE5, FF13, GOW3, GT5, Halo 3.
It’s kind of similar to my opinion on what games you would bundle with the system. New IP’s usually don’t work too well as the game has yet to establish itself as a franchise and more than likely a new ps3 or 360 user has yet to play them.
If the original Killzone was actually a well received game and a fairly established franchise it would have fell into that category. LBP is simply new. Same with Uncharted

doubtful this will convince many to buy a ps3. the name “uncharted” just isn’t very widely known.
then again, GT5 is widely known and much speculation is that this even will fail to sell the millions of ps3 needed to put sony back in the race.
MGS4 and KZ2 received waaaay more marketing than uncharted and both mgs4 and kz2 failed to spur any significant ps3 sales.

I know it contradicts my former point, but MAG, if advertised correctly with it being made public known to the masses that the developer is Zipper and they are the group responsible for the SOCOM series, the game has a lot of potential.
I really don’t even like the term console seller anyway for one game. What numbers determine whether or not it’s pushing the consoles numbers specifically?
Speaking from the experience of some friends. PS3’s real console pusher was:
1. A Very good game library
2. The Price Cut
3. Their 360 broke for the last time and it’s now out of warranty.

All we got is Coty Barlog saying that the game will run at 1080p and 60fps. That could have been what they were aiming for. I guess we’ll know in another month when the demo arrives with the GOW collection. It looks 720p to me.

I’d like to see figures on how many people own a 360 and PS3. With so many cross platform games it seems only the hardest of hard core would want both.

I’d like to put this delicately but I don’t think people that post on gamer forums represent a general cross section of people who buy games consoles.
I’d be surprised if a large percentage of people had both 360 and PS3. 90 % of the games on them are identical cross platforms anyway.

I own all 3 as well.
The sad fact is that more ‘none hardcore gamers’ probably are out there. Hence the Hollywood style watering down and sequel pumping of the last few years. And whats happening to PC just breaks my heart.

I usually have a long wait to get on with uncharted 2. I can never get in on a friends game. Whenever I try to connect to you guys the server is full.

Roca, you need to understand that The Future Of Sega was banned a long time ago for impersonating other posters on here. He was never unbanned. If he’d have just started posting as himself and playing nicely then I would have let it go. But he pretended to be someone else instead, showing he hasn’t actually changed. Simple as.
