Demon’s Souls achieve universal acclaim status on Metacritic

October 7, 2009

Demon’s Souls achieve universal acclaim status on Metacritic Demon’s Souls is definitely one of the more interesting titles to hit this year. The game offers a challenge that harkens back to the days where it took blood and sweat to beat a game. With just one day till the official release of Demon’s Souls in North America, gamers are getting ready to finally test their might.

Demon’s Souls was released in Japan back in February 2009. The game was hailed by many for its challenging gameplay. Demon’s Souls is challenging in a good way where you literally had to plan and strategize your every move.

This level of action-strategy has not been seen before since Diablo II. That is why many American hardcore gamers have been looking forward to this highly anticipated dungeon crawler. With Demon’s Souls releasing Oct. 7 in America, the reviews have started pouring in and the game seems to be positively received thus far.

Currently, the game holds a “Universal Acclaim” status on Metacritic from over 31 review sites. There is no doubt that the score will fluctuate a bit around the 80 to 90 range with more review scores being added, but things are looking good for Demon’s Souls in general. The two words that every review site seems to use is – “innovative” and “challenging.”

Demon’s Souls may also be one of the first games to seamlessly integrate online and single player together to create a unique experience unlike anything out there. Imagine playing the game and you begin a boss battle, but behind the scenes the game offers another player across the country an opportunity to defeat you as the boss. The incentive is that the winner of the boss battle (you or the person playing the enemy boss) can earn loot and weapons. Make sure to check back for our full review of Demon’s Souls.

Got this in yesterday from GameFly, and yes, challenge is definitely the name of the game… this is one where I need to spend a couple of hours with before getting into the flow of things. Not visually impressive, but then again, neither was infamous.

    @ CarlB

Massive 3rd person – open world games arent usually graphicaly impressive. I’m glad you pointed that out because I was very dissapointed with GTA4’s graphics. infamous has at least acceptable graphics for this current gen but GTA4 graphics was only giving me headache with all the blur and fog and bad frame-rate.

Demon’s Soul is not graphically impressive but for its genre, the game looks and plays great, Personlly I think it look better than Oblivion

  9. JofaMang:

On the way to pick it up yesterday, and I got rear ended by a teenage driver in a caravan who was texting instead of braking. Stupid Little bitch was trying to argue with the fact that I was completely stopped when 10 witnesses came forward, including a guy was beside her as she was texting shrotly before the impact. My 92 skyline is a total write off. RHD I will miss you.

So after I deal with the license/registration info trade, I call a tow truck, get a ride with the driver to MPI (our socialized auto insurance agency) file my report. Then I take a cab to the police station to file the accident report (over 1000 damage requires a police report within 7 days).

Now it is about 4 hours after I left home to pick up the game, and a buddy is giving me a ride, after hearing my sob story. We get to EB games (gamestop in canada) just to find out that the Canadian shipment has been delayed. I won’t be getting the game till today or thursday.

    Twas a bad day.

  10. Roca.:

    92 skyline….. impressive.

  11. phranctoast:

I’d be up to try MAG out Roca. Stupid playoffs are getting in the way of my game time…

    You watching tonight?????

  12. JofaMang:

Not as impressive as it sounds, heh. I got it last spring for $4500, and spent as much on repairing it (Mostly the shipping cost of parts). I only got about 90 days of driving out of it this summer, between shop visits. Canada has a grey market, essentially, any car older than 15 years can be imported and licensed if it passes simple safety exams for the province you live in. Older RHD cars are very common in Winnipeg, especially amongst our very large Philipino population.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved driving it, but it has been such a headache I am kind of glad for the accident, heh. At least insurance will give me my repair bills for the last 6months, and pretty damn close to what I paid for it in value. I’ll try get some pictures of it, but its already going through the write-off to auction process, though I have to see an agent in the next couple days to finalize negotiation of my claim. I’ll see if he can email me digitals of the car.

Very fast and very fun, but had I spent twice as much for a better maintained model, I probably would have gotten 2-3x the driving time out of it this summer, the season i really wanted it for anyway.

  13. Roca.:

    @ Phranc,

of course I will watch it, I want to see A-Rod smash 2 homers and get 7 RBIs.

    @ Jofa

kinda like my experience with my 360 ;)
well…I guess you can always get the 2008 GT-R

  14. Barnabe Jones:

Jofa – Sorry to hear that. I read about the CA shipment delay on the PS Blog (comments section).

I keep looking at my checking account… and then looking at Amazon’s page… I’m trying to be strong and hold off, but we’ll see how that works.

  15. Roca.:

    you didnte get it BJ?

  16. Barnabe Jones:

No not yet… I haven’t worked legitimately since the end of March. Unemployment has been pretty good to me, but I still have be a little frugal.

I already bought Uncharted 2 and I can afford Demon’s Souls but I’m not sure I should pick it up just yet.

  17. JofaMang:

I am collecting unemployment right now… company laid me off so that I could go back to school, kicking in my living expenses and tuition while at school, sitting on Employment Insurance until January. It works pretty good here in canada, but I am going a little stir crazy (especially without DS, yar :( )

  18. Roca.:

man you must be crazy to leave your job during hard times like this. I though you were going to school part time because you only need couple of more classes to get you degree? couldnt you just work full time and go to school part time?

  19. JofaMang:

Nope, my school will almost be full time. It is a temp lay off to give the company some time off paying my wage. I will continue to work for them when I am done school, but in a larger capacity. They are investing in me, and I am using EI to cut them a break. The owner is a man I know very well, and I have intimate access to the accounting department. This way I get a vacation, a better education I don’t have to pay for, and a better paying, higher responsibility position in my company when I am done next summer. In return, they save money (the cost of school and living expenses is far below my wage, and they don’t pay me anything until school starts, EI is covering it) and get a better educated employee out of it.

I spent the summer training my replacement, just so I could take this vacation. I had the option to stay and work til january, but I designed a new position to replace me, that required lower education, had less responsibilities, and thus, paid a lot less than me.

I am not worried about my job security, heh. I have standing job offers from several other consulting firms within Canada.

  20. JofaMang:

My wife is a social worker, and her wage is more than enough for us to survive. We were so poor when we got married, we learned how to live on almost nothing, heh. I still get a check from EI, but its only about 1/4 of my usual pay. I am saving money not having a car in the near future, since she works only a few blocks away from home, and I will be busing to school.

It is a sacrifice, but it is totally worth it.

  21. Roca.:

oh You had it all figured out then..I though you were just taking a risk there. I hope it all goes as planned for you.

  22. Roca.:

Demon’s Souls Metacritic score has gone from 88 to 90 since the US reviews started to come out.

I remember Happy saying it would get to the low 80s when more reviews come out. lol fanboy desperation

  23. phranctoast:

Looks like another awesome addition to the PS3 library.

  24. Akaro:

Jofa, you sure have a nice plan there (and a good insurance too, sucks to lose transportability). Wish you success.

I am thinking about going to live to Canada in a few years myself. Even went to the embassy once to ask some info. Sounds like a great place, albeit cold.

  25. Barnabe Jones:

Jofa – I’m in a similar situation. Only I was permanently laid off, and the state/federal government is paying for most of my schooling. It’s pretty a pretty amazing opportunity. I am expected to get a permanent job at some point though. I’m just going to find a part-time job to pay the bills.

  26. Barnabe Jones:

Oh and I did break down and bought Demon’s Souls. It will be here in a few days.

I should really seek help for my gaming addiction.

  27. Roca.:

    BJ,

did you get Platinum on Batman

  28. CAD:

    Barnabe

Wher have you been I’ve been waiting on you for some Gears action.

  29. Roca.:

can somebody explain me what is metacritic “Universal Acclaim” status?

  30. SW:

@Jofa – Same boat here man.

I don’t even have an ebgames etc in my city. Just a futureshop.

I’m going to be near an ebgames today and I just gave them a call and he said its going to be in today but they’re waiting on stock at 11 ish. Which I am guessing translates to ‘maybe’ ;)

So ill just check after class \o/

Sucks about the skyline dude :(

  31. CarlB:

roca, sorry to hear you got a headache from playing GTA IV… I didn’t really notice that much of a framerate issue, blurring, or fog when I played through it early last year on 360… but then again I wasn’t really looking for it.

When I played through Infamous it seemed to have very noticeable jaggies, pop in, and fog, much more so than it was when I played GTAIV, but the game was still a blast and I didn’t mind a bit. Demon’s Souls doesn’t seem to have that much of a “open world” as the paths are fairly linear so far, and neither does each area seem particularly massive, but I think I’ll reserve judgment on that until I finish the game (I just beat Phalanx yesterday).

I would say Oblivion seems larger in scope at first glance, but as far as DS looking better than that game, I can’t remember as I played Oblivion over 3 and a half years ago.

  33. JofaMang:

    @sw
I just got back from EB games, got my copy, but might not be online for a few hours, have to head down to insurance and talk to a dude this afternoon about my settlement.

I am not planning on replacing it anytime soon, as I have 1998 cutlass coupe in storage I can pull out and insure if the need for a car arrises. If everything goes well, I *may* try to find a newer one for next summer, like a 94-95, in better condition, but now am wary about cars that need parts from another continent, heh.

There are a few Toyota Chronos floating around (basically a 90s lexus sc coupe) and they seem to run a fair bit cheaper, while having a parts source in NA (Lexus).

I have fallen in love with RHD, shifting with my right hand will feel fucking weird if I have to go back to it, hah.

  34. CarlB:

@roca – universal acclaim for games on metacritic is 90 or above average:

    metacritic.com/about/scoring.shtml

  35. Roca.:

    I mean to say:
**I just read the post of this idiot…do you even know the *difference* of making sequels and milking a franchise? *your* list is full of sequels.

  36. Roca.:

    Thanks CarlB

  37. CarlB:

No problem roca. Don’t forget God of War Collection and GoW 2. I will play God of War Collection and Mass Effect 2 in a heartbeat and personally am happy that they are “milking” these franchises. Gears 2, Halo 3, and L4D I have yet to play even though they received “universal acclaim” on Metacritic (okay so L4D dropped it’s score and missed it by one). I still don’t see how Mass Effect 2 is any different by your standards for “milking a franchise” than Uncharted 2. Who really cares as long as the games are fun to play?

  38. Roca.:

uncharted 2 took 2 full years. Mass Effect took 1 yeah and some small change.

god of war collection doesnt fall into the “sequel” category…and If you noticed I left Uncharted out because the sequel came out pretty quick even though I think 2 full year is just about right (just like Fable 2 and 3). on the other hand Halo Wars, ODST and Reach are 6-8 months apart.

  39. CAD:

    Jofamange

Dude you need to come into the Millinium. 90’s cars?

Trust me you’ll enjoy a car in the 2000’s

  40. CAD:

Get a TDI or some kind of Diesel. Excellent on consumption and beautiful power. But make sure it’s a clean diesel Engine and not the old Diesel that make noise over time.

  41. Barnabe Jones:

CAD – my girlfriend took the 360 back. Her roommates died, so I won’t get it back until they get theirs repaired. Should be 2-3 weeks I think. I’ll be ready to go after that.

Roca – No Platinum for Batman. I’m not good enough to beat all of the combat challenges.

Also I had to but down my crushing play through for Uncharted. After you enter the fortress looking for Elana, you eventually make your way inside. There’s a bit where you jump down into a room that’s flooded and there’s pillars. Drake says “this place looks like it could use a good plumber”… right there is f’ing impossible.

  42. Barnabe Jones:

GTA IV – Features a much larger area. It’s not as detailed, but it’s very polished.

Infamous – Much smaller area with more detail, but also has more graphical hiccups.

So I would have to call it a push.

  43. CAD:

Barnabe that sucks. Well I’ll be here. To bad it’s not Canada you will get it back in 3 days.

  44. Barnabe Jones:

3 days? That’s really good. I’m not sure how long it’s going to be, but I think 2-3 weeks is about what it is here. I might be wrong though.

  45. Saber_HAHAha:

    @ToshithegreaT

Those were all pretty amazing sequels, and you can bet on the ones that are coming up. If that is milking a franchise, there is nothing wrong with it. It just pisses me off when the sequels get more and more watered down, which is what seemed to happen to Halo after 2 and especially after 3.

  46. Rhino:

A mate of mjine imported this from PlayAsia as there is no word yet of a release in Australia, and I must say I am very impressed. The way you can join games and play online is very cool, and also you can leave clues for people to help them, or if you want to be a total bastard set them up for a slaughter.

This is a game to need to invest patience and time in. It’s not something you can pick up and play quickly, cause you’ll have trouble putting it down.

I’m still working my way through BM:AA, and looking forward to UC2, and with MW2, AC2, GT5 all coming out I really don’t know how much time I would get to play this.

Speaking of BM:AA, there is a riddler trophy behind the Intensive Treatment building in a tunnel which is blocked off by some steel beams. I can see the tropy and a breakable wall but can’t find where to get to the breakable wall.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  47. Rhino:

    @ToshithegreaT

And why not milk a franchise for all it’s worth. If a game can make a dev millions and millions, and make a name for itself then why not.

Makes good business sense, and it has produced some of the greatest games around.

I know I have played quite a few sequels and enjoyed them, and I’m sure you have too. So what is you point?

  48. Barnabe Jones:

So what class is everyone choosing? The guy from Atlas recommenced the Royalty class for newbies, but the stats don’t look very good. Supposedly you start with a ring that regenerates your MP.

I think I’m leaning towards a Temple Knight maybe.

  49. SW:

After testing our the Barb, Royalty and Hunter, I decided to go with Hunter. Stats seem to be ‘decent’ everywhere but magic & faith. Plus the bow is cool to start with.

Using my battleaxe two handed ftw :D

  50. SW:

Oh and btw. I will seek pleasure in invading your games! Muahahahah ;)

  51. ToshithegreaT:

@roca, i hope u do realize that both uncharted and mass effect were released in Nov 2007, while uncharted is releasing on October 2009 and mass effect in march 2010.. They annouced that mass effect is going to be a triology even before the first game was out..
So plz tell me roca, howcome uncharted 2 is a well developed sequel while mass effect 2 is a rip-off (miliking franchise)

  52. ToshithegreaT:

i meant uncharted 2 releasing in oct 2009 and mass effect 2 in 2010

  53. ToshithegreaT:

as for calling me an “IDIOT”, aren’t u the same guy who took destructoid’s “JOKE” article “How prototype is blatantly better than infamous” seriously..

    h**p://www.destructoid.com/how-prototype-is blatantly-better-than-infamous-135979.phtml

I m sure any fair, non-biased ps3 users like carlb, jofamang or sw (just an example ) can take a look at the article and understand, that it was indeed a joke article, especially when u read reason no 10..

Its sure says a lot about your comprehension skills, best of luck at statestreet..

  54. ToshithegreaT:

“on the other hand Halo Wars, ODST and Reach are 6-8 months apart”

Halo-wars – is a rts game, i hope u know the know the difference between rts and fps, rite ??

Halo: odst is a spin off based on the halo universe, with slightly different gameplay, just like final fantasy 13 and ff 13 versus are going to be..
to be fair though, odst is mostly passed off as an expansion..

Halo reach is going to be the next halo..its going to launch next year sep 2010 or 2011..

  55. ToshithegreaT:

“uncharted 2 took 2 full years. Mass Effect took 1 yeah and some small change.

god of war collection doesnt fall into the “sequel” category…and If you noticed I left Uncharted out because the sequel came out pretty quick even though I think 2 full year is just about right (just like Fable 2 and 3). on the other hand Halo Wars, ODST and Reach are 6-8 months apart”

  56. CarlB:

@Barnabe – the Wanderer… just something different that sounded good at the time… it’s worked well so far. You got the collector’s edition right? Do you like the strategy guide or have you even glanced at it yet?

@Roca – Where did you get your information for Mass Effect only taking a little over a year for development?

I was putting God of War Collection as an example into the “milking the franchise” category we were discussing, not the “sequel” category. It’s the exact same games only in HD format w/trophies being resold (and I will love playing through these again). I’m sure a Halo Collection (1&2 remastered for HD and sold together in disc format) would be seen in the same light by some.

Again, as a gamer, I will play fun games I like in a heartbeat, regardless of whether they are old games, remastered games, sequels in the same generation (regardless of time in between), different genres in the same universe, or spin-offs… I just don’t understand how any gamer could complain about a company “milking a franchise” if ultimately they get the opportunity to play a good game.

Each gamer has enough info available to make an informed decision before purchase between hands-on articles, previews, reviews, demos, rentals, etc. that it is only their own fault if they purchase something they do not like or does not last long enough for them (the latter reason is why I personally like to rent most of the time). Not the company’s for “milking a franchise”.

*CarlB steps off soapbox and returns to Demon’s Souls… pauses to reflect on whether he would play Demon’s Souls II within the span of year and some change… gamer consciousness smacks him upside the head with the flatside of a falchion of sensibility +2 and the answer is… of course*

  57. Roca.:

    @ CarlB

“@Roca – Where did you get your information for Mass Effect only taking a little over a year for development? ”

my bad, I thought the game came out in 08 (didnt bother to look)

  58. Roca.:

    @ ToshithegreaT

you are still an Idiot on my book. IT took you 4 post to make a point (talk about comprehension skills) and even then you horrobly failed.

    here’s is how you failed:

1- In your book, how is GOW, MGS, KZ and GT are milking-franchise games but Mass Effect and Halo are not is not? = FAILED
2- as for the destructoid article, I pointed that out to prove Kev (another idiot like you) that his forza article was pure BS and Destructoid cannot trusted, everybody in here saw but you = FAILED
3- how smart of you to compare halo ODST (expansion) to FFv13 (a whole new full RPG which might better the original 13) = Failed
4- so you know about Carlb, SW, Jofa and me working at State Street… can I say “Ninja”?? is that you Kev??
5- I never listed Uncharted on my list, everybody but you saw that (still an idiot) = FAAAILLLED
6- I dont recall taking anything from destroctoid seriously? making stuff up again Kev (ToshithegreaT
    ) ?? = Failed.

I’m not wasting my time with a low life of your level. In your world MGS, KZ, GT, GOW are milking of franchise..congrats, you just open eye ;)

  59. Roca.:

I see GOW as milking the franchise because they are just the exact game as the previous to for the same exact same price they cost for the PS2 (kind of like re-releasing PS1 on the PSN) but instead they added trophies and HD graphics. they just giving everybody who missed those game (like you) a chance to play them before GOW3 comes out.

same happened before MGS4 came out, Konami released MGS collection for the PS2 so everybody can play them before MGS4 came out. if Sony do the same with a Team ICO collection, will you called that as milking it?

  60. CarlB:

@roca – I didn’t miss the games, I played through them both (only part of GoW2… but even if I had played through it entirely it wouldn’t make a difference in my viewpoint now). Even if it was released after GoW3 and I had played through each game twice I would still play God of War Collection… why? Because these are awesome games and playing them uniquely for trophies is worth it to me, plus I want to experience them in HD.

FTR, I think all great 3D games should get the same HD treatment (quality 2D sprite based games not so much… hello Metal Slug) and all great games should get achievement/trophy based equivalents and made available on present gen consoles.

It doesn’t matter to me whether or not they come out before or after the sequel, if the game is great and worth replaying I will replay it. To answer your question, no, I don’t use the phrase “milking it”, you do. I just see the game and don’t blame a company for trying to sell it.

  61. Roca.:

“all great games should get achievement/trophy based equivalents and made available on present gen consoles.”

If PS1 had trophies I will buy most of them. so far I Only have 4 PS1. I dont think it will ever happend because thats more work for developers

  62. CAD:

    ToshithegreaT

Don’t worry about Roca you get use to his idiocy after a while. He definately lack the ability to comprehend.

  63. Roca.:

    CAD,

seem like the more post you make the more you look like Kev…what is there to comprehend? are MGS4, GOW, GT and KZ are “milked franchise”?

did I ever took a destructiod article seriously. I was the first to point out destructoid is full BS. Pranch I believe you were around whan I said it right?

  64. ToshithegreaT:

“you are still an Idiot on my book. IT took you 4 post to make a point (talk about comprehension skills) and even then you horrobly failed.”

I made 4 posts coz i dont like to put huge lists or a wall of text..

  65. ToshithegreaT:

    here’s is how you failed:

“1- In your book, how is GOW, MGS, KZ and GT are milking-franchise games but Mass Effect and Halo are not is not? = FAILED”

i will reply to the next post ok..

2- as for the destructoid article, I pointed that out to prove Kev (another idiot like you) that his forza article was pure BS and Destructoid cannot trusted, everybody in here saw but you = FAILED..

So u mean to say that if a website posted something u dont understand or u dont agree with, that is a bs website, by the way, what i meant was that “blatantly better” has been a special feature for destructoid’s, same as fanboy friday.. here another one for you..

    h**p://www.destructoid.com/how-killzone-2-is-blatantly-better-than-halo-3-123412.phtml

  66. ToshithegreaT:

“3- how smart of you to compare halo ODST (expansion) to FFv13 (a whole new full RPG which might better the original 13) = Failed”

wow, seriously roca, where did i actually compared halo3:odst to ff 13 versus..

I just stated that halo:odst is’nt a sequel but a spinoff, just like final fantasy 13 versus is going to be..
Again as i said, u need to learn.. best of luck at statestreet..

  67. phranctoast:

I recall you calling it BS Roca.
I pointed out that you can’t believe what that guy says anyway when the easiest thing to tell (graphics) he fails hard at.

I don’t think Mass Effect falls into the “milking” category.

A lot of the others do though. COD comes out every year. A new iteration of guitar hero seems to come out every……5 months.
Halo is getting the saturation point. Theres books, comics, toys and three Halo games in two years.

  68. ToshithegreaT:

4- so you know about Carlb, SW, Jofa and me working at State Street… can I say “Ninja”?? is that you Kev??..

5.6- I dont recall taking anything from destroctoid seriously? making stuff up again Kev (ToshithegreaT
    ) ?? = Failed.

I am not even gonna say anything, except i am from India, and well i can put out my gamertag if someone doubts me of being someone else..

  69. phranctoast:

    @ToshithegreaT

I think by BS website he meant it exist to create controversy, which by the link you provided is clearly the case.

  70. ToshithegreaT:

5- I never listed Uncharted on my list, everybody but you saw that (still an idiot) = FAAAILLLED..

But u didnt put it in that “milking franchise” either..

    and as u said..
“If you noticed I left Uncharted out because the sequel came out pretty quick even though I think 2 full year is just about right”..

so u mean to say, if a game’s sequel comes out, in say a two years or more, then its fine..

well then thats just ur opinion.. RIGHT,

coz i feel a well devloped sequel has nothing to do, with the time, it takes to come out to the market, but the rather the quality of the title..

  71. Roca.:

the funny thing is Kev is from India too ;)

but anyways I still never took anything from destructoid serious. I was not the one linking his GT5 vs MF3 article on ever single blorge thread. that was your buddy CON, and your other name Kev

@Phranc, thanks at least you got my point

  72. Roca.:

I didnt put uncharted in the milking franchises because a 2 years window for a franchise is not milking it. Sorry about Mass Effect I thought I came out in 2008. My bad. ok you got that one.

    now explain me this:

you Said: “coz i feel a well devloped sequel has nothing to do, with the time, it takes to come out to the market, but the rather the quality of the title..”

then how come you stated Sony was milking MGS, KZ, GOW, GT and Uncharted??? you are contradicting your self there (Something Kev used to do alot)

  73. ToshithegreaT:

“1- In your book, how is GOW, MGS, KZ and GT are milking-franchise games but Mass Effect and Halo are not is not? = FAILED”

This is why. i pointed out your comprehension skills, where did i stated that these games are milking franchises.. i just pointed out that, sequels are being made for both platforms, its funny when people actually blame just microsoft for milking its franchises, either every sequel is a “milking franchise” or none of them are.. u cant name one side, thats all i wanted to say..

“I’m not wasting my time with a low life of your level. In your world MGS, KZ, GT, GOW are milking of franchise..congrats, you just open eye”..

How old are you roca ??

forums/comment section are made for people to state their opinions and have healthy discussions and arguments, rite, then why going on calling names, or petty point scoring insults..
Others have responded to my topic too, i dont see them calling me an idiot or a low level..

  74. ToshithegreaT:

    @phranc..

then mostly every website in a way does that.. i m sure we can agree on that..

  75. ToshithegreaT:

    @cad

thanks bro, that helped a lot.. I can understand :)

  76. ToshithegreaT:

“the funny thing is Kev is from India too”..

so u mean to say i am kev ??
well as i said goodluck at statestreet.. u need it

  77. Roca.:

    @ To-shit-the-great

what does statestreet has anything to do with this. seriously how old are you? but anyways good luck in India.

and I dont need luck to work at state street, what you need is something you lack of.

  78. ToshithegreaT:

well see there you go again..
Anyway, i dont work (i have my own business)

“what does statestreet has anything to do with this. seriously how old are you? but anyways good luck in India.”

    wow, what a comeback.. lol

  79. phranctoast:

I’m going to smack both of you..lol

  80. Roca.:

    yeah lets move on……..

  81. SW:

People please! Make this about the slaying on Demons!

So how’s everyone liking Demons Souls?

When I first started playing I loved it, then when I first died and lost my souls I hated it. Then I understood ‘how’ its supposed to be played.

So now I’m all about loving it, I haven’t moved past the castle yet (but I have the other areas unlocked).

Dual handed running axe slashes just feel so damn good.

  82. Roca.:

I heard the game has 20+ hrs of “frustration”

not total gameplay hrs, just frustration hrs alone is 20 :)

  83. Barnabe Jones:

    Carl,

I ordered the deluxe, but have to wait until it’s delivered. Should be here on Tuesday. I watched an un-boxing on Amazon, and the strategy guide looked really nice, and complete.

  84. Barnabe Jones:

I watched game play videos of the first level. It doesn’t look that bad, but you definitely have to watch out and keep your guard up.

  85. SW:

Yeah theres a fun guy in the castle who pretty much ‘one shots’ you with his spear… That was fun the first 7 times ;)

  86. Barnabe Jones:

So did anyone beat the first level yet?

  87. CarlB:

I need to find a bow. I’ve learned to replace game saves with die saves. It doesn’t sting nearly as much now, especially when I continually see my soul level go up and I’ve regained my thousands of lost souls.

  88. CarlB:

SW, red eyes… you can lure him into a hole or off a ledge… or shoot him and kill him even at low levels. I’ve read the average level to kill him is 30 but with the above ways you can do it at the start and still collect his loot.

Barnabe… depends on what you consider “beat”… I killed phalanx, got the trophy, and unlocked the monumental… but have yet to kill the dragon (why I’m looking for a bow and will buy about 150 arrows).

  89. SW:

I dunno man, he always blocks my arrows and the crossbow has such a long reload time I don’t think I could snap a shot off and get out of the way. Ill need to try out the lure thing, it feels kind of a hollow victory tho… Want to cut him down with my axe ;)

How do magic users stand up against him?

  90. CarlB:

Well… it works like a charm on the winding staircase, or the hole next to the archer on the platform near the beginning… but if you want to level up even more, try taking out the dragon (from the tower on the 1st walkway you have to run through) with the compound shortbow and about 100 or so arrows… worth 7000+ souls, then you can get a better axe to take him down with.

  91. Roca.:

    hey CarlB,

Have you Played Varkyria Chronicles yet?

  92. SW:

Ok, so I lured him down the hole next to archer. I feel dirty :(

I’m working on arrow for that dragon… Looks like it takes a while tho (i fired a few at him already) so i’m going to take at least 300 arrows with me.

  93. Barnabe Jones:

OK, so I was leaving for the weekend on Friday, and as I was walking out I saw that the postman was nice enough to deliver my package early.

I only put in a little over an hour. I managed to break the chains for the door, raise the gate, and get the cling ring. I ran back to the Nexus to save after that. I’ll take care of the red eyes next time.

So far, so good. I only managed to get a little bit of playtime in, but I really enjoyed it. The sword fighting is really well done.

  94. Barnabe Jones:

oh and I went with the knight. Sexy armor and strong melee attacks for me. I do eventually want to get some offensive and defensive spells though.

  95. SW:

Barnabe I’ve sunk about 9 hours into the game so far and have only visted the first 2 locations out of 5 ;)

Oh, and 1 dragon down :D

  96. Barnabe Jones:

How did you do it, cross bow from the tower? I haven’t even seen them yet.

I read the strategy guide cover to cover last night. I can’t wait to get back and spend some more time on it.

Is the 2nd location much harder then the first one? Also where else did you go 2 or 4?

  97. SW:

I used the compound bow from the first tower with about 150 arrows. I was doing 11dmg a pop. But he can’t hit you so meh :P

So far i’ve been to the palace and stone fang tunnel. Stone fang is about the same difficulty as the castle. The areas I’ve jumped into after that seemed to have very fast powerful enemies…

I’ve also taken out the tower knight now too :D

I found the weirdest thing tho… I did not have the materials to upgrade my axe past +2 ‘quality’ battle axe, however I WAS able to increase my spiked shield up to about +3 to the point where my shield was doing the same or more dmg that my axe… So i just round around shield bashing people to death :P

  98. CarlB:

Roca, not yet. Just got the collector’s edition of Demon’s Souls as it is the only way to get the strategy guide (they planned this). Didn’t realize it would be so small. I know eventually the gamefaqs and others will catch up, but I don’t want to wait.

  99. CarlB:

SW, sorry for the bum scoop, I guess my character was leveled up a bit more or had the higher stats in places. How do you find out how much damage you do with each hit?

  100. Barnabe Jones:

For what it is, I thought the strategy guide was pretty decent. It doesn’t give a step by step walk-through, but it is very helpful.

The official Atlas site is still pretty barren. Mycheats has a decent guide, complete with maps. The one on gamefaqs isn’t very good though.

  101. Roca.:

I got the Collectors Edition also

  102. Barnabe Jones:

I think it was worth it. The strategy guide is really helpful. The art book is nice, and the CD looks like its the full soundtrack. All in all, it’s a really nice package.

  103. SW:

@Carlb – All your advice was good.

As for weapon dmg, it shows in the item screen. But if you’re talking ‘dmg dealt’ then I just when around beating lots of folk… Shield was consistently doing more dmg than the axe, attacking quicker, AND using less stamina…

  104. JofaMang:

    brains, need more brains…. nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  105. SW:

Go back to Demons Souls Jofa ;)

Addict!!! I know because I’m one too :(

I can’t help going on soul farming runs… Wahhhhhhhhhhh

  106. CarlB:

Don’t forget to consume all your soldier’s and hero’s souls, and the Small Flame-Scale Demon’s Soul (10,000)… apparently they can’t be used for anything else.

  107. JofaMang:

I had to restart, I accidently attacked Blacksmith Ed the first time through 2.x, and didn’t realize who he was (was trying not to spoil myself on the details) so threw out my ability to do the high end weapon upgrades.

I already have Dorans sword and armor, but while I could use them through to the end, I would be wasting a play through without being able to get more trophies, rar.

So I haven’t deleted him, couldn’t bring myself to do that to a lvl 100 toon, but I started a new Knight, heh.

After the Blacksmith Ed incident, I am peaking at spoilers a bit now, hah, to be sure I don’t repeat the same sort of mistake.

  108. Roca.:

lol…what were you trying to accomplished by killing him?

here is a question..should I kill “Ostrava, Of Boletaria” or “Dregling Merchant (vendor)”

  109. Roca.:

    or both :) ???

  110. JofaMang:

It was an accident, heh. I was in kill mode (just beat Doran and got his sword and armor), and just swang before thinking. I don’t use the targeting mode very much in tight places, so I didn’t have that to warn me that it wasn’t an enemy.

You either need to kill Ostrava (black tendency shift) or let him die (no shift) to get the mausoleum key that gets you access to Doran. I believe you get it anyway, as there are 3-4 parts of the castle where Ostrava helps you, and the key will be a reward. If he dies later on, he drops Rune sword and shield (not if he dies in 1-1) a great combo for casters. You can get the rune sword and shield in 3-2 anyhow, though, so not needed to kill him to get it.

This has been a great source of info, well detailed and seems to cover the entire game:
    demonssouls.wikidot.com/demon-s-souls

  111. Roca.:

    thanks Jofa,

Sorry I have been asking to many question but when Im home my little brother is using the PC and I know its going to take time to research all this stuff so if I ask him for the PC he is going to be bother every 5 mins (my laptop battery died so I cannot use it atm)

but thanks again that really helped clear things up.

so what should I do with Dregling Merchant? (mind you im still in 1-1) I just dont want to missed anything.

  112. JofaMang:

No problem at all, I am sorry I haven’t been responding quickly, blorge only lets me log in once every 3 days or so (since the site changed) no matter what browser I use (Firefox 3.5.3 atm, but have tried fully current chrome and IE to the same effect).

Dregling merchant is killable if you need to shift your tendency to black, but otherwise he is just a vendor. he actually moves around the stage as you progress, appears in 1-2 for sure (and disappears from 1-1)

  113. Roca.:

Thanks Again Jofa. Im going to call you the “Demon’s Souls Assassin” you really know all about it

  114. Ghost:

Yeah well that damn spider is starting to get on my nerves….hehe..

  115. Roca.:

    @ jaja

What class are you using Ghost?

  116. Roca.:

    I meant “haha @ Ghost”

  117. Ghost:

I am a Barbarian, how about you??

  118. SW:

Ghost just get a bow, stand at as far back as you can to the right, and arch him to death.

  119. Roca.:

im a Magician (thanks to SW) started as a Knight but that mofo is to slow and does not start the game with any range attacks.

  120. Ghost:

I was to late in coming and reading the comments, I just ran up to it and let it meet my bastard-sword up close and personal hahah, Needless to say it did not care for that one bit, I had to eat a few handfuls of my “premium hydro weed” but in the end my stoned barbarian kicked ass lol… it was about time tho, that damn spider.

  121. Roca.:

what chapter is that… Im not there yet

  122. JofaMang:

The spider boss is at the end of 2-1.

Its not cowardly to summon help on flamelurker (2-2 boss) btw, hah. He is a tough bitch, even after lvl 80, Yurts Gloom armor (you’ll see) and some good decent weapons, I still died a couple times before I said screw it, and got help from outside, heh.

  123. SW:

So, I spoke to Jofa about this last night, and I feel kind of dumb for now knowing ;)

But, if you want souls, then allow yourself to be summoned (use the blue stone) … If you die when you’re summoned you do not lose your souls :D

After you die it puts your back to where you left your summon stone, with all your souls intact. Theeeeennnn if you want you can just put another summon out and allow yourself to be summoned again, and just keep racking up souls.

The only downside is that if you beat a boss this way, it doesn’t count because you killed the boss in ‘another world’ – BUT you do get ‘revived’ and Jofa said the Soul Tendency gets changed more towards white too.

I did a simple run yesterday in 1-4 and picked up 70k souls for my troubles.

God damn, I love that game… Its going to ruin my Uni this semester and make me feel so tired… Its like heroin.

  124. Roca.:

“Its not cowardly to summon help”

I hear they can also kill you and steal your souls?

how can I get summond or sommond another player? I keep saying blue stuff on the floor

  125. Ghost:

    mm..mmmm…good….heroin. lol

  126. SW:

@Jofa – I was looking at the wrong boss guide when I encountered the flamelurker :)

I still flatted his ass with my soul arrow and flame thrower :D (and much herbage)…

@Jofa – To summon you have to be in body form and not soul form (your start in soul form) then walk over to a blue mark on the floor and hit x and select summon. If you’re in soul form you can be summoned by someone who is in body form by using the blue stone to place a blue marker.

The summons can ONLY kill you when they are ‘invaders’ (to ‘invade’ you use the black stone)… I got invaded like 4-5 times last nite, luckily tho, 4 of those times I was tagging along with someone else as a soul and we whooped the invader (firestorm FTW!)… IF you kill an invader they lose a soul level, they also have less health than you when they invade.

  127. SW:

    @Roca – OK i misread your question! :D

Some areas just don’t have alot of people running thru them… 1-4 is great for summons tho… Try to put your summon text near the start of the level. Thats what I do.

  128. SW:

Don’t suppose anyone knows what happens if you use a meltstone on a +X weapon?

Wondering if I get my mats back…

  129. JofaMang:

You don’t get your mats back.

You spend much time with MMOs, SW? I haven’t heard recipes materials reffered to as mats since my impressively depressing MMORPG days, hah.

  130. SW:

    TBH not a whole bunch.

I’ve have been putting time into ‘Dungeons & Dragons Online’ lately, well, until Demons Souls… Havent touched any other game in a while now…

I don’t enjoy the ‘click-to-attack’ of most MMO’s. DDO has combat that feels like a 3rd person hack ‘n’ slash tho. Guess I just picked ‘mats’ up ;)

Darn about the mats thing tho. Man I can’t wait to get home. I need to fuck up some souless monsters.

  131. Roca.:

Does Sony owns the IP of Demon’s Souls?

I know SCEJ published the game in japan and was also involved in the development of the game…Im guessing they probably fund for the making of the game too? does anybody know?

Because if is a Sony IP, we should defenitely see a sequel 2-3 years from now. a PSP version will be awesome too.

  132. Funkinstien:

I think they should make a demon soul type game using the lord of the rings license. How funny would it be to shield bash little hobbits.

  133. CarlB:

“Does Sony owns the IP of Demon’s Souls?”

No it looks like From Software does, Atlus published it here, but it looks like SCE had designers participate, so it probably will not come to 360, though I wouldn’t rule it out completely.
