Uncharted 2 news: Naughty Dog talks dev, PS3 bundle, sales hopes and sequels
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is being released on the PS3 next week, with North America getting it first on Oct. 13. The game is enjoying amazingly positive reviews and could be the first true system seller on the Playstation 3. In a series of recent interviews, the developers of the game, Naughty Dog, has talked about various elements of the game.
Development Time
It’s been less than two years since the original Uncharted was released, and yet here we are with the sequel finished and on its way to release. A two-year development time isn’t uncommon, but it’s pretty damn amazing when the sheer amount of work put into this triple-AAA title is considered.
In a video interview with GiantBomb, as transcribed by Examiner, Naughty Dog’s Amy Hennig spoke about the 18-month development time. She said:
Really we’re on kind of a break right now because we really killed ourselves on this one. I don’t think people quite realize that we’ve actually made this game in 18 months and that was a longer single-player experience, a feature length movie basically in terms of the cut scenes and all of the online features in multiplayer and the co-op. And we kind of look back and said: ‘how did we do that?’ We basically went into zombie mode and just killed ourselves to do it. And so everybody’s taking a lot of time off and just recharging the battery right now.
Price Cut/Bundle
A PS3 price cut was a long time coming, and it finally arrived with the PS3 Slim last month. But it wasn’t just us consumers who were waiting for it to happen, with games developers also wanting to see it arrive so that their games had more more chance of selling big. And Naughty Dog were in that group.
In a recent interview with Edge, multiplayer designer Justin Richmond said:
We’d been hoping for a price cut forever, just as fans of PS3, but obviously we got really lucky. I think Christophe and Evan Knew but nobody else knew anything about it. And with the [Uncharted 2] bundles it’s a pretty big win for us. We want to push PS3 as much as we possibly can. It’s an awesome machine and we believe in it really strongly, so price cuts or whatever gets it into people’s hands is what we want.
Sales Hopes/Sequels
In that same Edge interview, Naughty Dog community manager Arne Meyer also revealed the company’s sales hopes and the possibility of more sequels in the future.
We’d love to grow the franchise – that’s the bottom line. No matter what you do it’s always very difficult to grow from one game to another. And that‘s what our milestone is. If we can do better than we did with the previous game then we’re set.
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune sold in excess of 2.5 million copies worldwide, so Naughty Dog is hoping to better that figure this time around. And if Uncharted 2 does do considerably better, then expect an Uncharted 3, and possibly 4 and 5. Otherwise, who knows.

I hope Uncharted 2 sales well I would love more games from them

Uncharted doesn’t seem like a franchise that could go on and on…a trilogy of Uncharted on PS3 would be great, but after than, they should move on to something else.
October 10th, 2009
I think they can pretty easily meet their sales goal of +2.5 mil. The first Uncharted was a new IP, and a launch title, with slightly above average reviews. This time around there are more PS3s out there, and the game has stronger hype and reviews.

Man three more days i been waiting for this game forever. Great Job btw. I cant wait to get this thing on my big screen with surround sound pumping, enjoying a nice chek orange cola and smoking my favorite brand of cigarettes.
October 10th, 2009
Uncharted should definitely be a trilogy. I would like it to be extremely popular, but it’ll sell good enough.
Arrgh… I looked up “Uncharted 2 ending spoiler” on google (oh god why did I do that), clicked on one of the links with the intention of exiting out very quickly. Ended up being a bit too slow, the spoiler was about 4 words anyways =’(

Bound to be advertised soon now that Ratchet and Clank is out in a few weeks, one year they do Ratchet and then the next is Resistance, they said they’ll keep that rotation going every two years, can’t wait!
R2 had a great ending

I like the way the story in Resistance 1 and Resistance Retribution were told

im wanting to get demons souls but is it too hard?
October 11th, 2009
@Kevo/SCAlot08:
I honestly will say that I died more times in this first dungeon/palace than I have in any game in a long time. I am waiting to get a little better before I go online with it. But being a little challenging is the reason I bought the game. I am sick of being able to just run through a game and beat it in a couple of days. O how I cussed and foamed at the mouth when I realized that you don’t have a pause and that everytime you die you lose your souls and all the enemys respawn. And you start back at the start of the level. So yeah it’s hard and hell I will dare say even annoying, but I wouldn’t have any other way.
October 11th, 2009
It is a really tough game, and I won’t admit how many hours I spent in the first palace getting the feel for the game.
But now that I have it nailed, its damn fun, and still damn hard. The sense of accomplishment on each boss I fight trumps most games I have played in their entirety.
I am lvl 60ish now, and getting the latria tower thing done, but have been ganked by a couple phantoms as of late (killed a few too, hah).
October 11th, 2009
Wow Jofa. 60!!
I am 29, I lost a level because I got killed invading another world
I actually rolled a magician too so I dunno if ill stay with my hunter.
October 11th, 2009
once you die, you lose all the souls you had, is there any way to get them back?///
October 11th, 2009
You get one chance to revisit where you died to ‘reclaim’ them. If you die BEFORE you reclaim them, then they are lost.
So you should spend ‘em before you lose ‘em
And hang on to your demon’s souls (the ones from bosses) as these can be used to forge cool weapons later on. And remember that you can ‘use’ the soul items you pickup (renowned soldiers soul, etc.) for extra soul points.
October 11th, 2009
I just got demon soul too. Im playing a priest and the only thing that has killed me so far is the dragon fire breath on the bridge passed the phalanx battle and that hole at the beginning. It had swirling glow so i jumped in thinking it would be a door to riches but it was a portal of death. they wont fool me again. well maybe.
October 11th, 2009
Does anyone know what why some weapons have a negative stat to the right of its attack stat. I got a weapon that has a higher attack rating than my current weapon but it is weaker because of the negative. Its not because i dont have the skill to use it either so im stumped.
October 11th, 2009
Thats why you gotta get 150+ arrows and take that dragon down
Plus you get 8k souls, and IF you decide to cash in its soul drop thats like another 12k.
October 11th, 2009
I found this to be a pretty decent resource about many of the things in the game that are not really explained…

October 11th, 2009
ok thank
October 11th, 2009
Yeah thanks SW I just got the game yesterday so I am just starting out, and learning what everything is. I shot at the Dragon about 10 times and it just looked at me like I was stupid and then decided to kill my ass. But I think I will go get alot of arrows and try what you said. Thanks for the info/link.
October 11th, 2009
Yeah, just run to the first tower, kill the guards and stand on top of it shooting him as he flies over. Takes like 10-20 mins tho.
October 11th, 2009
thanks for your mini reviews lol but i liked fable…ill give this a shot
October 12th, 2009
Can Somebody explain me what’s the “world tendency” and “Character Tendency” all about?
October 12th, 2009
uncharted just doesn’t seem to have the clout to be a ps3 console seller.
we’ll see in January…
October 12th, 2009
You can have a I guess a neutral tendency and a black or white tendency…
I think you need to kill a boss in ‘body’ form to make the tendency white. Once you do that things change in the world. For example, in the castle you’ll notice a closed barred door on the left side right at the start… Get tendency to white and it stays open
and there is an NPC you can kill for some loot
To get black tendency I think you need to die when in ‘body’ form multiple times.

Lots of good info… \o/
October 12th, 2009
I did, they did not explained well…
SW: “there is an NPC you can kill for some loot”
The strategy guide I have says if you kills NPC you will lose on some important items they might have later on. so is it better to kill them or not?
it seems like this game does not make it easier for us even in desicion making. I want to obtain and complete as much as can in one playthrough.
another question SW, which one is a better tendency to aim at, White or Black?
October 12th, 2009
Oh, the NPC i am talking about is one that tries to attack you…
Well, I think both tendancy’s open diff. things. So try to for white first I suppose (i think you just have to kill a boss while in ‘body form’)… Then black is easy enough because you just let yourself get killed in body for a few times (you need a special stone to resurrect yourself in body form tho)…
The lack of documentation in kind of mind boggling for all this stuff… But I suppose it does add a sense of choas to the game
October 12th, 2009
yeah, I’m still at 1-1. ( I have died like 20 times already
)
I havent played the game since because I wanted to get the full overview about the game because I have when I find out I could have done things differently have way through the game or find out that I missed something important.
and Demon’s Souls “auto save” is not making things easier
October 12th, 2009
I probably going to jumb on Uncharted 2 and once I’m done with that I will jumb back on Demon’s Souls. DS looks like a game I will be playing for the rest of the Year and until the Next RPG comes out (White Knight Chronicles)
which class are you Using SW
October 12th, 2009
I started a hunter and played for about 9 hours…
I just rerolled as a magician and am having way more fun…
October 12th, 2009
did you beat the game or something? or you just decided to start the game with a new class
October 12th, 2009
I just decided to start as a new class.
I always go for the ‘brawler’ types first, I don’t know why. But the sword fighting is soooo fucking good that I realized I could play a squishy magician AND dodge/roll in combat so that I don’t get killed easy.
October 12th, 2009
babarian baby. lol

I thought it would go down once more reviews started to come in

I really feel bad for Lara Croft and Tomb Raider now. Uncharted 2 is everything the Tomb Raider series is been trying to be since Tomb Raider 2. Eidos should fired everybody who has work on a Tomb Raider game. the game has gone from awesome to horrible.
I do hope for a 3rd installment in the Uncharted series and if they can keep they franchise going for a 4th and a 5th game without milking the game. if they start to make the series “not cool” anymore that’s when they should stop.
October 15th, 2009
IDK what you’re talking about Roca. Tomb Raider series has been getting better and better with the last three iterations. Ok… I’ll admit..one of them was the anniversary which was a graphical overhaul and puzzle overhaul from the first game to utilize Legends new climbing abilities (made it feel like a new game)and might not count as a “true” sequel. Legend and Underwolrd were awesome games.
The Tomb Raider series to me feels so much more of a platformer than Uncharted or U2. The Level makeup is generally about that. They are almost in classes by themselves in that respect. Sure Uncharted has some platforming, but it never seems like its the main aspect of the game and all it does is passes the time until you get into another gun fight. With Tomb Raider the opposite exists. It’s as if the fighting is getting in the way of the platforming.
All in all, I hear Tomb Raider will get an overhaul. I’m not to happy about that, as I like those games for what they are…. Tomb Raider games.
As for Uncharted 2. That may be the best game I’ve ever played. Took me about 14 hours to complete on Normal.
The train sequence towards the middle, has to be one of the coolest levels I played in any game.
There is no way it’s not winning Game of the Year across the board.
If Modern Warfare 2 thinks it can be better, all I gotta say is bring it on. I’m looking forward to it.

“As for Uncharted 2. That may be the best game I’ve ever played. Took me about 14 hours to complete on Normal”
already???????? your a beast.
October 15th, 2009
took the day off yesterday and played from 9AM to almost 8:30pm. Talked myself out of going to work to play a game..lol.
October 15th, 2009
lol I used to do that, during the PS2 days
October 15th, 2009
so was it worth the hype (no spoilers please)
October 15th, 2009
The game may be the best game I’ve ever played. I haven’t jumped into the MP aspect so that still needs to be confirmed.
It was filled with so many ohh shit moments that you practically had to pause to catch your breath. Ear to Ear smile while playing this game most of the time. It reminded me as to why I love video games.
If there is any way MW2 could be this good and be a front runner to GOTY, then by all means….I look forward to playing another amazing game of similar caliber very soon. My bets on Uncharted 2 though. You’ll understand when you play it.
Lets get a CarlB review.
October 15th, 2009
I been playing it…its awesome so far (Klhoe got a fat ass)
im just in chapter 6. because I played for about 2-3 hrs then I switch to Demon’s Souls (I highly recommend it for you Phranc) and then I switch for some NGS2
October 15th, 2009
Demon’s Souls doesn’t sound like my type of game (Dungeon Crawler). I would be lying
if I said I wasn’t at all intimidated by the games difficulty.
NGS2 will get bought when it comes down in price. It’ll happen real soon (just like all the other 360 “exclusives” that get released to them first.
October 15th, 2009
But or bought lol
October 15th, 2009
huh?
October 15th, 2009
Demons Souls isn’t hard in the traditional sense.
Its just,… unforgiving.
Be a man, buy it!
October 15th, 2009
*tucks junk between legs and slowly walks backwards out of room*
October 15th, 2009
SW is right is not that hard…you just die alot
October 15th, 2009
Dieing is just part of the game. So punishing, and so rewarding when you break through an area that has been treating you like bubba in san quentin.
October 15th, 2009
hey Jofa,
whats Pros and Cons of being a Souls and Being alive?
I know when you are alive you your full health bar back and you make more noise as you walk? but story wise which form is better to play the game, does the world change or not?
idk why they dont explain this in the game
October 15th, 2009
Soul = less HP but more dmg output. Can be summoned.
Alive = more HP but less dmg output. Can summon, cannot be summoned, can be invaded.
Yes I know you asked jofa
